A Modest Proposal
As we have debated various issues on this site for the last couple years
my understanding of our economic system has changed. I’ve come to the
conclusion that the middle class of this country has been caught in a
pincer movement by two armies. My definition of the Middle Class is
households making between $50,000 and $150,000 per year. The Free Shit
Army is attacking us on the left. The middle class has been the backbone
of the country, doing the heavy lifting in this country. They get up
every morning and trudge off to work to support their families. The Free
Shit Army sleeps in. They have chosen to not educate themselves in
order to advance in our society. Politicians have enabled them to stay
in poverty by providing welfare, disability, food stamps, and tax
incentives that make their lives just comfortable enough to not work. If
you provide money to people who are classified as disabled, you get
more disabled. The Free Shit Army has 50% more disabled than the general
population. If you pay people for not working, why should they work?
The middle class works and pays their taxes. These taxes are then
redistributed to the Free Shit Army.
The second pincer movement on the middle class has been conducted by a
stealthier army. This army has experts in propaganda, misinformation,
and obfuscation. I call them the Ruling Elite Army. The generals are the
ultra-wealthy CEOs of Wall Street banks and mega-corporations. Their
armor divisions are manned by the corporate mainstream media. They are
excellent at laying down a great smoke screen before blasting away. The
infantry is manned by 535 Congressional officers with thousands of
corporate lobbyist foot soldiers. This army has been given the mission
to capture the supplies of the middle class.
The middle class were not prepared for the assaults they have been
fending off. They became soft and satisfied. They stopped training. They
became distracted by their gadgets, delusions of home wealth, and fear
of phantom terrorist enemies behind every bush. The propaganda machine
of their true enemies has convinced the middle class that foreign
enemies are massing. The enemy is within. The middle class will need
to sacrifice and go to war against two enemies. Are they up to the task?
I’m not sure.
In my opinion the following platform is the only way to save this
middle class country. Liberals and supposed Conservatives will be
outraged. No one will be happy with my solutions. So be it.
MY TEA PARTY PLATFORM
Political System
-
Term limits of 6 years for Congressmen
and Senators. Serving in Congress is not a career. It is a duty to the
country. They are not in Congress to bring home the bacon to their
district or State. They are in Congress to ensure that future
generations have a country that offers opportunity to live a better life
than their parents. -
The entire election process would be
scraped. It would be transformed into a 3 month publicly financed
election. No money from corporations, unions, or individuals would be
allowed. Candidates would have 3 debates on public TV. -
Lobbyists and PACs would be eliminated from the political process.

Every bill before Congress would
immediately be put online. The constituents of every Congressmen and
Senator would be allowed to voice their opinion by voting yes or no
online. -
Every bill that is proposed by a
Congressman MUST have a funding mechanism. If the proposal increases
costs to the American taxpayer, something else must be cut to pay for
the new proposal. -
NO American troops could be committed to
firing their weapons without a full vote of Congress as required by the
US Constitution.
Economic Policy
- The first thing to be done is to abolish the Federal Reserve. It has
been around for less than 100 years. The Treasury has the authority to
issue the currency of the country. - The currency of the US would be backed by hard assets. A basket of
gold, silver, oil, uranium, and some other limited hard commodities
would back the USD. If politicians attempted to spend too much, this
basket would reveal their plans immediately. - The FASB would be directed to make all banks and corporations value
their assets at their true market value. This would reveal that the mega
Wall Street banks and corporations like GE are insolvent. An orderly
bankruptcy of all insolvent financial firms involving the sell-off of
their legitimate assets to banks that didn’t screw up and the
bondholders and stockholders would be wiped out. - The 16th Amendment would be repealed and the income tax would be
scraped. It would be replaced with a national consumption tax. The more
you consume the more taxes you pay. Saving and investment would be
untaxed. - A balanced budget amendment would be instituted. It would phase in
over 5 years. This would require a massive reduction in spending. A
downsizing of the US Military from $900 billion to $500 billion would be
initiated through the withdrawal of troops from Afghanistan, Iraq,
Germany, Japan and hundreds of other bases throughout the world. - The two most worthless departments in the government (Dept of Energy
and Dept of Education) would be eliminated. All corporate subsidies
would be eliminated. All Federal employees would have their pay slashed
by 10% and the workforce would be reduced by 20% over 5 years. Federal
health benefits and pension benefits would be slashed. - The Social Security System would be completely overhauled. Anyone 50
or older would get exactly what they were promised. The age for
collecting SS would be gradually raised to 72 over the next 15 years.
Those between 25 and 50 would be given the option to opt out of SS. They
would be given their contributions to invest as they see fit if they
opt out. Anyone entering the workforce today would not pay in or receive
any benefits. The wage limit for SS would be eliminated and the tax
rate would be reduced from 6.2% to 3%. - The Medicare system is unsustainable. It would be converted from a
government program to private market based program. The rules and
regulations would be eliminated. Senior citizens would be given
healthcare vouchers which they would be free to use with any insurance
company or doctor based on price and quality. Insurance companies would
compete for business. Doctors would compete for business. The GAO would
have their budget doubled and they would audit Medicare fraud
& Medicaid fraud and prosecute the criminals brutally. - The healthcare bill would be repealed. Insurance companies would be
allowed to compete with each other on a national basis. Tort reform
would be implemented so that doctors could do their jobs without
worrying about slimy lawyers. Doctors would need to post their costs for
various procedures. Price and quality would drive the healthcare
market. - The entitlement state would be dismantled. The criteria for
collecting welfare, food stamps and unemployment benefits would be made
much stricter. Unemployed people collecting government payments would be
required to clean up parks, volunteer at community charity
organizations, pick up trash along highways, fix and paint houses in
their neighborhoods and generally keep busy in a productive manner for
society. - A free market method for stabilizing the housing market would be for
banks to voluntarily reduce the mortgage balances of underwater
homeowners in exchange for a PAR (Property Appreciation Right). The
homeowner would agree to pay off the PAR to the Treasury (and
administered through the IRS) out of future price appreciation on the
existing home or subsequent property. The homeowner would be excluded
from taking on any home equity loans or executing any “cash out”
refinancings until the PAR was satisfied. The maximum PAR obligation
accepted by the Treasury would be based on the value of the home and the
income of the homeowner.
Education Policy
-
With the elimination of the Dept of
Education, the education of children would go back to localities. Every
child in America would receive vouchers for grade school, high school
and college. They could choose any school to attend – public or private.
If the private school cost more than the voucher, the family would pay
the difference. Excellent schools would flourish, poor schools would be
forced to improve or they would close. -
Teacher tenure would be eliminated.
Teachers unions could exist, but schools will only receive the amount of
the student vouchers as funding. This would essentially force public
schools to run their operations based on excellence in teaching.
Energy Policy
- Without the Dept of Energy to block the free market, companies
should be guaranteed a fast track approval process to build nuclear
power plants ASAP. The approval process for refineries and LNG
facilities should also be fast tracked. - The Pickens Plan to convert our truck fleets to natural gas should
be given priority. The government can actually do something to help the
market. An upgrade and expansion of the electrical grid could connect to
windmill farms built across the plains. - Increased drilling off the coasts and in Alaska would be allowed with proper procedures in place.
- A national project to create high speed electric rail lines between
major cities and light electric rail connecting the suburbs to the major
cities would be undertaken based upon ROI. Only lines that could
reasonably make profits would be built.
National Defense/Foreign Policy
-
Elimination of foreign aid to other countries would be implemented immediately.

Withdrawal of US forces from the Middle
East and other countries would take place over 3 years. Amazingly, after
we leave the Middle East, terrorism will miraculously decline. -
Conduct free trade with all countries. Make treaties with no countries. Do not bully or threaten any country.

The US military would be used to efend
our country. Any commitment of forces to battle would require a full
vote by Congress as the Constitution states. -
The torture of anyone would be outlawed.
Immigration
-
If we want to keep illegal aliens from
entering the country, then we need to build a fence/wall and use
technology to truly seal our southern borders. Illegal aliens are
illegal. Their children are not legal. If you break the law, you are
punished. -
We should encourage the immigration of
smart people to this country. Legal immigrants built this country. We
should encourage the foreign students who graduate from our best
colleges to stay in the country and work for American companies. -
To help stabilize our housing market, all
foreigners who would buy a US property in cash would be guaranteed a
fast track to citizenship as long as they break no laws.
Social Issues
-
Let people do anything they want. Gays could marry. People could practice whatever religion they want.

The Dept of Homeland Security would be reduced dramatically.

Wire tapping, monitoring, and spying on US citizens would be outlawed.

Personal liberties would be restored. Individual rights would take precedence over corporate and government rights.
- Only modest restrictions on gun ownership would be allowed (criminal
checks). An armed citizenry is the best defense against tyranny.
The mainstream media would classify me as an extremist with the views

is running annual $1.6 trillion deficits, the Federal Reserve has 0%
interest rates and is about to monetize another $1 trillion of debt
after already monetizing $2 trillion of debt, Wall Street has been
handed $2 trillion of taxpayer money, our National Debt is up from $5.7
trillion in 2000 to $13.5 trillion in 2010, and peak cheap oil is on the
verge of shocking our system AND MY PROPOSALS WOULD BE CONSIDERED
EXTREMIST.
This country is on the precipice of collapse. I truly believe that.
Republicans winning seats in November will bring about gridlock in
Washington DC. That is better than the alternative, but it will do
nothing to save the country. Dramatic measures are required to avert
financial collapse. I do not see anyone honestly telling the American
people the truth. Our future as a country is at stake. Do enough people
care? I fear not.

The problem is that most of the standing middle class (those left) are public servants, now called officials, who are reaping spectacular salaries and expect the same in pensions. The corruption on all levels of government, from the little village I live in to county level to state level, multiplied, corrupted from bottom to top and top to bottom. Who is left to complain? Obviously some things need to change, you can tell the US guvMINT is run by rednecks. Who else would combine Alcohol Tobacco and Firearms (ATF).
That said a lot of these ideas are condradictary to the opening premise. If the middle class is indeed slave to corporate masters, how would privatising government services help? In other words, rolling over key services to corporate goons that are trying to fjuck people would improve things? Some cases it might, such as charter schools, but others like medicare would be a challenge.
I live in the Netherlands and although the tax rate is high, I do not mind paying the taxes (as much). The cities are clean and safe, schools are great and there is an affordable and reliable public transportation system. I think the issues is about efficiency of government spend.
The statement on immigration is naive at best. The California economy (8th largest in the world) works because of illegal immigrants. You would never get middle class Americans to work in the fields all day harvesting and then go wash dishes at night. If they did become legal, the cost structure for farming would jump and people would pay the price at the supermarkets across the world. Or just imagine if the UAW union members went into agriculture, an orange would cost $20.
Not to mention all of us that had to fight our way through CA public schools would have been deprived of all the latin hotties. The only reason we kept going. Think of the future man!

I can take a speed train (with wifi) across three countries and it will be on time more often than not. Getting from San Francisco to Emeryville (15 miles) was nearly impossible on public transportation, not to mention unsafe at night.
If you read my post you would understand that I grew up in California and advocate immigration. It is the backbone of the US since the beginning and something they do relatively well compared to most countries.

You may make a claim of "growing up" (whatever that means) in Cali, however I live here and my family has been here for five (5) generations.
Just so that you know, most Californians oppose illegal immigration and kids don't bring guns to school only because the schools installed metal detectors. The shootings still occur, just outside school grounds.

Many good ideas in this BUT, taken altogether or even a few of them, is tantamount to a revolution. To mount a revolution we would need at least a participation rate of 40,000,000 people scattered thruout the country to pull it off.
Therefore, this manifesto is beyond the realm of possibility. Never in a million years without a complete failure and breakdown of the current muddle would this ever happen.
Countries with corrupt or dysfunctional governments can last for centuries. Thru one maneuver after another the ruling elite manage to hold on to power and the money. Like a largely dysfunctional, drunken, perverted father of a family in the Ozarks infested with incestuous breeding, it can go on for generation after generation until the rot is rooted out and destroyed, obliterated.

Like Nicholas II in Russia, for any real change to occur, the entire family of elites need to be executed. And pray that the new Bolshies that make it happen have the wisdom and the will to govern with some semblance of virtue.
All in all, this thread is a waste of our time. We need to get on with the overthrow of our governors, and the assassination of the members of the FED and a global jihad against the top 50,000 or so. Absent that draconian measure, we are all better off with making of what is left of our lives a better improved living, the acquisition of some refuge to which we can escape.
Their are only two ways to see results regarding these proposals,
1 The bankruptcy of the US would do many things like the above but probably still wouldnt work,
2 Revolution Civil War or a Coup Leading to the removal by force of all CEOs MSM outlets Corrupt Politicians which means most if not all of them excluding Ron Paul Which would result in babkruptcy like France and back to square one after.
Clearly both these options are no startes hence these proposals are no starters as the price would be to high to get them,
I dont have any answers but since the middle class is probably aware of its position one thing they can do legally is stop working and join the free shit army and take the food from the big boys its effective non violent and if done en mass it may even work,

I see "disabled" people getting nice parking places and sauntering right up to the store as handily as I do. Handicapped is a much abused way to game the system. In past days a truly physically disabled person was helped by family, church, and friends. In my part of the country we still do a lot of that. I have no opinion on your own predicament so please don't enlighten me.
I don't disagree with many of the changes Mr. Quinn suggests, but a party platform to modify/repeal them acknowledges that Congress had (and has) the right to make them in the first place. I strongly disagree with that. I'd like to see this:
28th Amendment
1) Defining and placing strict limits on the use of the Commerce Clause, and a timeline for repealing/unwinding all prior federal laws that do not adhere to the new definition.
2) Defining a Tenth Amendment test for all new federal laws, and then to be retroactively applied to all federal laws enacted since ratification of the Constitution. Existing laws failing the test will be either voluntarily unwound/repealed by Congress, or if they choose not to, automatically nullified in 5 years from the date of this amendment.
29th Amendment
1) Declaring the Federal Reserve Act illegal under Article 1, Section 8 (The Congress shall have power To...Coin Money).

You have my vote on most everything. I see some quibbles but not enough to work it too hard.
There is a few more things. Coal is King, Wavefarms for power and any way you can stop the outsourcing of jobs and keep them here at home so anyone who wishes to do this work can after they graduate from High School.
Finally but not lastly, CLOSE up the Business at about 8 PM in the evening and send everyone home for a good night's sleep. EXCEPT for mission critical infrastructure and other places vital to the USA such as Truck Stops. This alone should slow the crime rates.
Provide in every county a common safe area or venues for our teens and young adults to be able to have a social life free from interference. In most every town of any size, the biggest problem is keeping our Youth occupied and engaged, otherwise they become bored, idle and cause trouble and break things and hurt people. Instead of sending lawbreakers to prision, induct them into the Military and deploy them on really dangerous work. Should these special service people finish and survive 4 years, they have earned thier freedom. Certain persons who commit bad crimes should be put away and kept away.
Death Penalty should be enforced prior to sunrise the next day. Throw out costly and expensive court choking appeals.
Establish a honest minimum wage, set forth price controls so that this worker MAY be able to have enough to buy a home or a Car or both so that this worker may be productive. If it means no more mc mansions or 500,000 dollar california 400 square footers on .10 acres, so be it.
Stop importing someone else's drywall, nails or electronics. Make and establish good factories again here in the USA and provide for our own so that we are not flooded with problem products that hurt people later.
Teach everyone from Kindergarden to highschool how to keep a budget. The USA should also maintain a Budget that has a profit each year however small.
Let Europe take over thier own Military, we have been in the area long enough and it's time to get home. We can always redeploy the troops along the south border to slow and stop the problems down towards Mexico.
Finally but not last. Reduce the bills to 10 pages or less, no voice votes allowed and stop working at midnight on friday when USA is asleep or partying trying to sneak or ram unpopular bills.
And hold the Lawmaker responsible to his or her own district by allowing that specific district to vote online for each and every BILL presented on the Congress floor. When all the USA have voted, then the Congress may vote according to what their district results Yes or no.
Bills must be written in common language that anyone can understand.
The Consitution as written minus a few repeals and more strength on things like the 2nd Amendment everywhere will be better than 500,000 laws no one can understand.
Give one tax rate for people, another to commerce and a third for imports and so forth. Keep it all simple.
Go back to what Gold and metals we have on hand. Plan to acquire more.
Make every city, county seats accessible by rail or other means, so that no one needs to be burdened with ownership of cars or trucks to get around on foot to reduce the obesity rate.
Strip out expensive technology from schools and Hospitals, they only increase costs every year. Go back to basics. Teach the children useful skills such as Banking, Weapons safety and vocational skills in addition to physical exercise (As a prelude towards Military Boot Camp should they choose to serve; they would be mostly fit)
Throw out the Lobby in Washington DC, our Law makers already know from the PEOPLE they represent back in thier home districts what is and what is not.
I can go on but I think I said enough.

Don't you all realise that all these suggested convoluted restrictions and rules are EXACTLY why we are in the present situation?
Do you not see the correlation between this and why Congress passes 2,700-page bills that nobody can read, understand or enforce? (Hint: there are 535 congressmen and over 17,000 lobbyists in Washington ... each with their own personal, corporate or constituent concerns that they want addressed in every bill passed ... plus thousands of constituents emailing in their 'critical' concerns that also must be addressed). I'm surprised they can even keep the bills as short as they are when everyone has a different opinion on every sub-item plus additional special interests that MUST be addressed in the bill -- or they won't vote for it or you, offer support in the next election, or fund the next campaign!
Indeed, the representatives are being paid as "lawmakers", so they are damned well going to make as many laws as possible! You should all be thankful that they take as many recesses and fact-finding tours as they do -- or there would be twice as many laws that are each twice as long!!
That's why central planning, micro management and the whole fucking democratic system CAN'T work!! Remember: A camel is a horse designed by a committee.
All we need is 4 basic laws (abbreviated for readability): Don't lie; Don't cheat; Don't steal; Don't hit. Everything else can be addressed in contracts between parties wishing to conduct some business or acquire a service -- in as much detail as the contracting parties feel the need or desire to commit themselves into. In that way, the affected parties will be intimately familiar with ALL the "laws" they have agreed to between each other, while nobody else need know any of the details.
Simple examples:
Want health care? Get quotes (and check references) then contract with a doctor or hospital on an ad-hoc basis ... or contract with an insurer who offers the types of monthly, annual or life cover you feel you need at a price you are willing to pay.

Your own doctor may do it for free (or at a deep discount) out of his own generosity; a wealthy philanthropist may have built a clinic or hospital near you; a teaching hospital may provide services for free; a religious or other charitable institution may build a free clinic or hospital nearby.
Want protection against burglars and rapists? Then contract with a local security company who will not only patrol your neighbourhood, but will also check on your property while you are on holiday and respond to calls from you or your neighbours within minutes. There are such companies operating in the UK that provide almost instant response to calls at a fraction of the per capita cost of a taxpayer funded national police force.
I could give a hundred other examples of how a free market could operate far more effectively than the current 'democratic' oligopoly, but I won't. Use your own entrepreneurial creativity to work out free market, charitable and private philanthropic solutions to each of the problems addressed in this thread.

Raise taxes to balance what's left of the budget, if necessary. This is simply a question of responsible governance. It might not be necessary with budget cuts and entitlement reform, but being realistic about tax increases keeps such platforms from looking ignorant and selfish.
Finally, a note on political economy: We don't live in Walden, we live in a society. Have some fucking compassion and maybe we won't let you be eaten by rats when you fall in your dotage. But most of the crap government 'gives' the middle class is completely unnecessary. Regulation needs to be workable and effective, from food safety to finance, but there is so much rampant nonsense that it all needs to have a visit from Mr. Wrecking Ball; again, we are actually a poor nation for a while thanks to the FED's insane interest rate "policies" so we'll just have to pick the bits that work out of the wreckage later.

There will be a certain percentage of a Population who are retarded and require a structured enviroment to thrive to whatever potential they have. There are those who will never see what most of society will see in the entire life cradle to grave. We always need to have compassion for them.
As far as the worker in whatever occupation who becomes disabled through that work will usually but not always remain productive in other ways in society. There are some who will be lazy and seek to defraud and they need to be weeded out.
Finally when a worker reaches a certain age, that worker needs to have the oppertunity to retire and live quietly. They earned it. They may not all have means and resources, but usually they make do with what they are given. Eventually dementia or other health issues lead to end of life scenarios that play out.
We want to stop crushing the very flower of our youth who are strong, motivated and so on by pushing them through college and graduate in so much debt that life itself becomes a burden. If you WANT a well educated percentage of society, remove the colleges from the equation and add 4 grades such as 13th through 17th with the option for extra education to finish out training for doctors, lawyers or whatever.
NOT everyone enrolled in higher education WILL make it. I myself have some college, but I aint going back because of the debts. This debt will be repaid soon and never again will I allow debts to rule my own house budget.
We are making a example to live within our means each month with a small surplus and surely the United States should do the same. The recent failures of congress to pass normal budgets for each of the 12 required spending is negigent and criminal. Usually a gigantic omnibus in the last few minutes of the Congress term is shoved through.

There are some dangerous ideas in this document.
