New Year Open Thread

Tyler Durden's picture

Since readers are likely eager to share their own predictions for 2011, please use the following open thread for that, as well as for anything else that may cross the collective subconscious. Additionally, any suggestions on improving (or deteriorating) the site, as well as all brainstorming, and last but not least threats, are most certainly welcome. Best of luck to all in 2011, especially those who fail in their resolutions to cease feeding the central planning monkeys.

What if they really are fooling us all!!!

Here we sit talking about the Fed being basically near bankruptcy if interest rates rise 1% or more. Amazingly, what if this was the plan?  The government under the new conservative republican rule wishes to abolish the Fed. HMMMMM. How convenient.  Put all the trash in the trash can and rather than kick it down the road, simply take it to the dump and bury it forever.  While the Fed slowly goes bankrupt, we convert back to pre Fed banking days with Governmental controls (surely not better) and let the Fed with all its crap go down the drain. Treasury takes over from there along with the Government.  Why on earth would they buy all the crap knowing that its just a matter of time before rates go up. They are not retarded. Foolish? yes. Stupid? No.

Not a trivial concern.  That is why any plan to abolish the Fed needs to be accompanied by the self-limiting discipline of a commodity currency.

Like to start aquaponics business here but already have that sinking feeling of being taxed w/o representation so why in fuck throw away my efforts/resources on the business end. BTW,thx to whoever voiced the comment "listening to Sarah Palin is like watching a train derail, with the same fascination." That's a graphic image I'll carry with me always.

The Bernank had no proven tools prior to his initiation of QE2...QE2 was an edumacated guesstimate which he hoped would be of some help.  Alas it has not helped in any major way.  Then, two Fed analysts pen a report that says in hindsight, we should have reorganized the TBTF banks and been more aggressive in stopping the deterioration of the housing market.  Amazing, considering all the previous denials.  I call it capitulation.  The rest will be damage control...slow fall or free fall, that is the question.

To anyone needing inspiration in 2011, here it is: My Mother who is the quintessential optimist and repeatedly offers canned statements such as "things can always get worse" and "when life throws you lemons, make lemonade"  said to me on the phone last night that she felt that 2011 would have to be a good year becuase things can't get worse than 2010.

Wow, did I get a good laugh out of that one!

Now, when I begin to hear statements like that coming from the real world, I begin to think we are nearing the end of this ridiculous financial road we are on (I think the movie "The Road" should have simply been about the forthcoming aftermath of this financial crisis).  I am not calling a "bottom" or that a "recovery" is imminent in 2011, but rather, the end of this charade is on it's way.  THAT, and that thought alone, makes me optimistic.

Happy New Year to ZH.  I want to particularly thank Tyler for doing this, WB7 for his fantastic creativity, and Money McBags for the really clever tounge-in-cheek (and I'm not saying what kind of cheek!).

As for the anti-Christian (Vatican bank ruining the world) and anti-semetic (Jews are ruining the world) crowd, and the anti-religion of whatever kind or race of whatever kind crowd, all I can say is that I hope in 2011 you will see the real faces of Evil.  Perhaps your understandable anger can then be properly directed at those who truly deserve a heavy dose of Justice delivered to them...and yes, some of them are Catholics and some of them are Jewish, but that really doesn't have anything to do with it.  Let the humans be prosecuted and brought to trial for their corruption.  That is my wish for 2011.

Won't make any bold market predictions, since i could care less as long as I'm trading in the right direction, short or long.

But I will make a few predictions:  By the end of 2011:

- A lot more of the public sheep will start becoming fascinated with the idea trading stocks for "part-time" income, and stock market related tweets and apps will be a hot item for smartphones.

- Masses of sports betting junkies will finally figure out that making money by trading stocks is infinitely easier than betting on sports, and you will see huge defections from the Vegas sports books.  A lot of that money will start piling into the NYSE casino.

- Perma-gloomers will eventually be proven correct, but long after their flock of readers will have given up and abandoned the bear case. And most bear traders will be wiped out and will be unable to participate in the next bear market when it arrives.

This is my best guess for 2011 and beyond:

The can will continue getting kicked down the road. It will be kicked far longer and far more vigorously than anyone expects. Every nation, state and municipality on the face of the earth will do whatever slight spending cuts are absolutely necessary to ensure they keep access to debt markets, and nothing more. The Fed will step in any time credit freezes up and create more liquidity.  We are now living in an era where people who hold real capital have become powerless to say no to irresponsible borrowers, because the Fed will step in and lend in their place. Unfortunately, this will prove to be a major long-term destabilizing force for the global economy.

Early in 2011, there will be some mild inflation. Gas may hit $4 and food may rise 10-15%.  This will result in the Fed backing down on QE, and by the end of the year, deflation will return. QE will resume in 2012 after the deflation is officially recorded. Lather...rinse...repeat. Indefinitely. Welcome to the lost decade.

However, as opportunities in the formal economy dwindle, an internet-based underground economy will begin to form and will develop its own currency (actually, it is more accurate to say it will challenge our notion of what a currency is).  We will only see the first hints of this multi-year trend in 2011. An increasingly large segment of the population will seek to trade work for goods and to trade goods for goods without going through the medium of dollars. Someone will find a way to serve this group by creating a website that combines the best features of Ebay, Craigslist and social networking and will make a fortune doing it. Personal trust will be the key here, because it is what is most lacking now in the “official” economy.

Maybe this will take the form of co-operative flash mobs where people with complementary skills and equipment get together to produce things, then take the products home for their own use. Or perhaps it will take the form of small group swap parties, where people barter informally among themselves, and you will need to be recommended by someone else to get into the group, and will need earn high ratings (in Amazon seller style) to remain a member. I don't know exactly what it will be, but it will be a very surprising innovation and will ultimately redefine commerce as we know it.

I'm back in Chicago for a week, and it's scary how many people there are out on the streets asking for money. One can't take a walk without being approached by some (normally black) person begging for cash. It's never been so bad, not like this, not ever. Well done Obama. You should go back to your supposed hometown and take a look at the shit the country is drowning in rather than vacationing in Hawaii.

Wait, what?  I thought the Teleprompter in Chief was going to pay off their mortgages, buy them a car and pay all their bills...

But seriously, it must be fairly common because I encounter the same thing here in VA.  A couple of my jobsites have always had a couple of homeless folks hanging out; in the past year alone, the homeless population in has exploded--now there's 15-20 folks hanging out, always begging for something.  110% of them are black.  And then there are the beggars in front of the 7-11, the grocery store; those on the street corners with their signs and even those who walk right up to your car window to ask for money.

Locally, our shelters and food banks are overflowing and short of donations too.

I've lived through several recessions and you're right: it's never been this bad, ever.

IMO natural gas is going to be the story of 2011.  Play this by going all in XOM and hold until it hits $83 for a quick 14% gain.  Then sell and wait for the deflation that should start to happen by mid 2011.  After the long bond starts yielding 5.5%+ start easing into TLT.  Should be all in TLT by early 2012.  At end of 2012 it will time again to crash the economy.  People will rush back into bonds and you can sell TLT.  Then just rinse repeat 2008 - 2010.  :)

ZH site suggestion -

Tyler, please get the webmaster crew to do something about making the scroll of recent articles by 'Contributors' more visible on the front page.

The reality - unknown to many readers, and not only newbies - is that there are really two ZH main article threads to look over, the main one showing down the centre of the page, and the 'alternate thread' of articles by the 'Contributors', among whom most of us will also find some fave must-read writers.

This 'Main Thread - Contributors Thread' duo is not clearly identified, and many ZH readers don't even know the 2nd thread exists. Currently, a lot of readers don't even know that the 'Contributors' tab needs to be clicked to view a lot of good articles, given the 'Contributors' tab is merely placed as one tab, among other not-often-clicked items ... like the dormant 'darpa'.

My guess is that many people are missing the third or more of ZH's good content that appears from these 'Contributors'.

People aren't realising that they can still find the additional articles, even after they are gone from the 'Top horizontal 3' on the home page.

Perhaps - right below those 'top 3' - there can be a big link titled 'For thread with leads to all other recent articles by ZH Contributors, click here'

and finally, it won't happen but, they should float all notional money against the hard currency in circulation, just to firewall off the working class, and to prove once and for all how overleveraged the markets have become. since there is really very little hard currency, it won't be hard to do, when you give you broker one paper dollar, he gives you the corresponding number of investment dollars, and when you sell your investment, it trades the other way.

Here are my "Nine 2011 Predictions" (full write-up at http://rense.com/general92/stdr.htm)

1. The U.S. will implement QE3/4 when the $600 billion of QE2 is not enough. QE3/4 will be in the trillions of U.S. dollars (USD) of quantitative easing, but they won't be called as such by the lamestream media.

2. The major export nations will engage in and increase their non USD-denominated trading among themselves. This will put increasing devaluation pressures on the USD. So, look forward to the US Dollar Index to drop further from the low 80s now to the low 70s or even lower in 2011.

3. Retail food prices in the U.S. will increase in the low to medium DOUBLE digit ranges (10% to 40%) for everything from the junk/GMO "foods" to healthy/organic foods. This will take place noticeably in the first half of 2011.

4. The real estate market in Canada will finally begin its collapse suddenly after the new year celebrations are over.  Vancouver will experience a housing crash of 50+% from its peak within 1-3 years.  Crash will start first half of 2011.

5. The Chinese real estate market, the last investment vehicle in China for those Chinese with money, will also begin its collapse suddenly, hitting hard cities like Shanghai, Beijing, Fuzhou, etc.

6. Inflation will run rampant in China as it is already doing so with retail food prices.  If China revalues its yuan by more than 7% in 2011, it will decimate a lot of its manufacturers and exporters.

7. The EU will continue its financial collapse, as nations like Spain, Portugal, and Italy will join Greece and Ireland in facing the stark choice between (Option 1) bailing out THEIR banksters or (Option 2) having THEIR nation go bankrupt, viz. the Argentina model of 2001.

8. Silver and gold will continue to climb in 2011. Silver will increase much more than gold in 2011 thanks to the "Crash JP Morgan, Buy Silver" campaign started by Max Keiser. Silver will breach $50 per ounce in 2011.

9. A major war will break out somewhere in the world in 2011 (if not in 2011 then definitely in 2012) involving the U.S. and/or one of its proxy allies, i.e., taking place in N/S Korea, Iran, Africa, etc.

Then, just slide the g-string to the right.

Then, Charlie Brown.

I used to have to prosecute these things when girls broke "the regulations" and got too close. Biggest waste of courtroom tax dollars ever. No one cared and juries would constantly nullify and acquit usually based on ID. "He missed my cabbage patch doll tattoo...right here." The state objects your honor. Could you please instruct the defendant not to flash the trier of fact. Your honor, your honor, I'm over here! The most disgusting part was the 50 year old vice squad detectives getting jiggles from girls younger than their own daughters. I always wondered what it was like when he got home from work and kissed the wife. "How was work dear?" "Oh you know, same old bump and grind." "That's too bad, here's your Heineken"

STAGFLATION WILL RULE 2011

(sorry to shout like that)

Everything else wil start to roll away around the edges of stagflation, as the real price of energy marches relentlessly upward and the real economy folds relentlessly downward.

The exponentially growing money supply will continue to lose any semblance of connectedness to this implosion.

Even the Fed/Treasury/JP-Goldman team will be unable to maintain the illusion that money is wealth. Panics. The MSM won't notice.

The Debt will be monetized until the dollar goes Weimar (not yet in 2011, sorry).

"Austrian Economist" will start to be a recognizable term.

Okay…you guys probably know all this shit already, but I just thought I would dump it in over the transom in celebration of the new, foul year of our lord, 2011.

- Buy good deals at garage sales and sell them at your own garage sale for a small profit (only for lucky souls who do not live in neighborhoods which restrict free-commerce)

- If you can, grow a garden and do your own canning. If you can't, buy from a farmer's markets and can. Just don't poison yourself in the process.

- Look at all the multitude of little things that add up to greater living expenses: thermostat settings, hot water heater settings, devices plugged in that do not need to be, impulse purchases, teenagers and other money drainers.

- Save ALL your receipts - even for none business purposes. Many of them are deductible. We saved all of ours in 2010, and it ended up as a $8800.00 entry. Using the sales tax tables is a rip-off, as most people actually spend more than they allow.

- Look for the possibility of bartering  in you locale. But, be careful here, as the IRS takes a dim view of barter and barter exchanges and their thinking is that since such value swaps are made on dollar valuations, they are taxable. If you do barter, and you record your barters, do not attach a dollar value on the trade, base it on "future utility" or something vague like that....something like, "this crowbar I I got for my collection of Liz Claman pics for may come in handy digging a turkey bone out of the garbage disposal."

- Buy shotguns. No personal defense device is more versatile or as cheap to shoot. Not to mention its utility when taking down a horde of seconal-crazed home invaders as they burst through the door or down the hallway. Unlike rifle and pistol ammo, it actually costs more to reload a shotgun shell than it does to buy it new. But, at some point, if you think availability might become an issue, then reloading is required. As long as you have the hulls, powder and primer (and reloading equipment) you can shoot almost anything out of a shotgun....shot, beebees, rock salt, ball bearings, gravel, cut-off bolts...even marbles. Finally, shotgun shells are very useful in making booby-traps so a low-life shithead will destroy himself as he comes through the door:)

- Make your own beef jerky. I have been doing this for years - mainly for shits and giggles, but you can buy the cheapest cuts of meat, trim the fat, season, and either use the sun or a dehydrator. You can do fruits as well.

- If you do own a gun....go and shoot the damn thing, as often as possible. Shoot at man size targets until kill shots become automatic. If you think you are incapable of actually shooting someone - which is a physically and mentally violent process, then maybe you need to rethink whether your ownership of a gun is the right thing to do. An awful lot of folks buy a gun with the idea that they can point it at someone and the situation is solved. In real life, nothing is farther from the truth. If you pull a gun on someone, and do not shoot, you have a very good chance of ending up dead. That is another good reason for owning a shotgun for emergency reasons....if you get the shakes and panic (and you will) you still have a pretty good chance of hitting the target. Also, if someone is trying to take down your door (and it is not the FBI, BATF, IRS or local cops) then pumping a load
through the wall above the door will guarantee to give whoever it is out there second thoughts about coming through that door. It will also likely wake the neighbors and make the bad guys's presence known...hell, put two shots through he damned wall!

- Although I think precious metals may have some short-term bumps in the road, they are probably a buy for the long term.

- Be wary of burying your gold in your backyard and "salting" the earth with a screen of metal particles. Modern metal detectors can screen out surface anomalies. Consider looking around for one of those "call before digging" signs - if you have one, and bury it under that, or just bury it under a cast sewer pipe (wont work if yours is PVC), or like a friend of mine in Thailand did with his collection of gold Bhats,  he keeps them under the false bottom of one of those "flip-and-clean" cat litter boxes. Of course, that wont work with Bullion, unless you have one hell of a fucking cat!

- Take out life insurance on Jim Cramer....he is due for a meltdown.

- Try making your own wine and beer. I have been farting around with it for some time, and the results are not bad. I have a neighbor who grows his own grapes...he really did not have the space, so he built a wood fence around his property and raises them on that. I trade him beef jerky and canned goods and cat shit (seriously...he has a nitrate fetish) for grapes. We do, of course, fill out the appropriate IRS forms for the exchange.

- Make sure WB gets plenty of love....I fear stuck there in dull old HK he may get bored and go to work for GS making sales flyers...I have it from good sources that Lloyd LOVES his work.:)

-  Junk me less.

- If you invest in stocks or bonds, watch your ass.

- Read ZH more, and contribute more. Where else on the internet (in one place) are you going to find such a broad combination of: smarts, info, decent advice, trollism, art, anarchism, relevant bullshit, irreverence, cognitive dissonance, establishment bashing, genius, tomfoolery, hucksterism, constructive criticism and just pure fucking fun?

Well...ok...maybe CNBC's fine site.

"You miss the point completely.  Your responsibilities as a parent do not end when the kids leave the nest.  Families should be strong and held together by a unifying parental guide.  Somehow we in the West fell for the divide and subjugate message of 'disinherit and splurge - fuck the kids they can look out for themselves.'  Look to India and the East for strong family ties and unity - that's what builds wealth on a generational level.   Dividing families and disinheriting the kids will likely result in an impoverished future for your kids and a greater chance that your lineage will fail- why is that such an aspirational goal for many seniors? Hello,

Long time lurker first time poster. Happy New Year!

Also want to thank zerohedge and all its participants for all they have done and to do.

Here are some facts about our silver situation,USa, I welcome any input.

Much of the initial debasing that was concocted by the rulers at the time (WW2 up to Eisenhowers farewell) and then after the death of JFK  these now masters of the universe implemented.

This was the Coin Act of 1964.

There was a Fed in 1964. We know this. Why don't the people unwind the Coin Act first then unwinding the "Fed" will be so much easier.

How many people are familiar with the Coin Act of 1964?

It is because of this indecent Act that America has no silver. They sold it. Deep Storage thats all the  silver the US has and with US having to import close to 3/4 our fossil fuel supply of energy we shant be seeing it for much time.

The US mined just 42,327,600 ounces(1200 metric tons) in 2007

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Silver_mining_in_the_United_States

In 2002 US mines produce 1470 metric tons of silver even though its spot was 1/3 the price of 2007 mine results.

In 2009 even though silver went up 66 percent the US only mined 1230 metric tons.

p.s. to my brothers B9, trav, mako, atomizer, et al...

as much as i hated to admit at times, your voices resonated most deeply in my mind this year.   sometimes it's most difficult to admit that what is most ugly is what is also most true.   thank you for sharing.

with that said, i would humbly offer one suggestion: that you open your heart just a sliver if just for a moment just to see what may reside there.   you are free to close it if you wish whenever you like, just be willing in that time to consider that what may lead one through the eye of the needle is not the mind, but the heart (or perhaps even better, a combination of the two).  if you need guides to lead you through, merehuman & blindman can show you the way methinks (there are also others).

i wish everyone here safe travels and good fortune in the coming new year.

oh yes, and to the 40 tylers and a marla, wherever you are, whoever you be, you are the archetype of a phase change, a manifestation of a strange attractor, a blessing in the disguise of a doppleganger, a catalyst towards a forsakable future.

my only question is:  what's beyond the mayhem?

FFA(fat finger alert)

I had an ff event so I am reposting with proper detail

In 2002 US mines produce 1470 metric tons of silver even though its spot was 1/3 the price of 2007 mine results.

http://www.referenceforbusiness.com/industries/Mining/Silver-Ores.html

In 2009 even though silver went up 66 percent the US only mined 1230 metric tons.

http://minerals.usgs.gov/minerals/pubs/commodity/silver/mcs-2010-silve.pdf

142763760 ounces or 4047.39 metric tons is Imported

http://www.indexmundi.com/en/commodities/minerals/silver/silver_t6.html

Facts is Facts silver in America is all gone

What would it take to just double our domestic mine production?

The most recent total US consumption I could find was 2001 around 5400 metric t if somebody has a more recent update?

guys, enough with the gold and silver.  have some fun! get yourselves over to christies and sothebys and bonhams -- you can buy online, you know.  you don't have to actually show up at those crazy auctions.  my prediction is that well-established contemporary art is going to do very well this year.  also -  chinese antiques.

part of my ZH-inspired conviction that this will be the last year of the party.  2012, nose dive.

How to improve ZH?  Maybe we could have a few shots of Marla in her cave without crashing the system.  No, that wasn't me, but if I were a tech weenie...

Best wishes to Durden and Accomplices.

I don't care for Al Franken, but I thought this was funny as hell:

Al Gore was vice president, and I was sitting next to Tipper. I said to her, “I have a joke about your husband that my instinct tells me is over the line.” “What’s the joke?” she asked. I told her, “Vice President Gore reaffirmed his commitment to the environment today when he announced a new policy regarding the stick up his butt. Instead of replacing the stick every day as he does now, he will keep the same stick up there throughout the rest of the administration. This will save an entire rain forest.” She told me to go with my instinct, so I didn’t do the joke

Those of us that comprehend what freedom is will notice!

Out of all the arrogant deceptions I've seen manifest the last few years this ACO2 Climate Change fraud disgusts me the most. Because IMO it is the one fraud on a global scale that can induce mass enslavement like no other fraud that has been attempted.

For those collective utopia n (n stands for nonsense) idealist that wish NOT to be free men and have the desire to be enslaved while having their minds, their wealth, their lives, and their souls controlled by perverted sick ass tyrants such as these then that's their decision.

I have heard it said that it is not evil "just wrong" thinking. What a misconception because anyone or any government that tries to make others (the masses) believe an idea based on lies for wealth, power, and control is just plain EVIL!!!

HAPPY NEW YEAR!

Don't worry. When Dow 13k comes around I expect the Dow:Gold ratio to be down around 6:1.

Watch for the turn between 1:1 and 2:1

Great blog, Wolf! I really enjoyed (and learned from) your articles. I bookmarked your site and I hope you keep writing. Really nice macro analysis from an international perspective.

Concerning put-backs to the banks, since the government has already shown that it regards the TBTF banks as its crown jewels, isn't it likely that a way will be found to prevent the put-backs from occuring or from having any damaging effect on the banks? Perhaps by offloading any negative consequences on the taxpayer?

I was intrigued by your comment: " The ongoing saga regarding the legitimacy of the foreclosures due to improper conveyacing, fraudulent documentation (robosigners and fake documentation to replace lost ones), and improper foreclosure enforcement hides the true fraud: the legitimacy of mortgage securitizations that have been sold to investors in the last 7-8years. "  Is this a lead-in to the put-back issue? If not, could you highlight the distinction you are making? It seems to be essential to understanding this whole mortgage mess.

At the moment, the main driving point of Fraudclosure has been improper foreclosure due to lack of proper documentation ie mortgage servicers are foreclosing on properties without the loan note in hand.  However, the bigger risk is that these notes were supposed to be conveyed to the various securitisations (MBS) that was supposed to hold these notes.  This was never done.  This implies that the securitisations never had the assets.  This is a failure of warrantees under the securitisation which can and mostly lead to a put back of the MBS, at 100%.  Guess who are the originators of these MBSes?  In particular, based on court proceedings throughout the process, it appears a lot of the mortgages were never conveyed to the MBS, especially in 20005-2007.  These are the worst performing assets and will have huge loss which are currently sitting with the MBS buyers.  However, if they succeed in a put back of the MBS due to the failure of the banks to convey these loans, these losses will be transferred back to the banks.  Guess what?  If these banks were not already insolvent, they will be insolvent now.
