And the winner of the lastest joke on the American buying public.. The IPAD... Gimme a break more electronic junk to lug around and be attached / connected to.. enough already!

I would buy the iPad if it supported Adobe Flash, had a built-in camera, and some USB ports for external storage.
I voted no... if its anything like my Ip0wn, it will end up with tape covering the cracked glass screen, uninsured and at the bottom of a body of water. Apple makes the least robust devices known to man, this is especially impressive since they have no moving parts.
I'm not....but hey any chance of an apple app for the iphone??
I voted no.
Background. I am a geezer; used Macs since 1990; own a MacBook and a 32 GB iPod touch; own an unlocked Nokia cell with lots of bells and whistles: on a budget; retired and live in Central America.
I love the Mac OS and my iTouch. I use the iTouch to read books. Stanza is an infinitely better app than Kindle for the iPhone/iTouch. But mailing books here is a PITA, so I do sometimes buy Kindle books from Amazon and read them on the iTouch. No hay problema. I find my iTouch wifi connectivity more than adequate for my needs. I bought a mic for it from Truphone for $10 and it verbal Skypes just fine.
That said, I wouldn't by an iPad because I have no need for it. I put Zigg protection on my iTouch and actually keep it in my front jeans pocket in the fold of my wallet. I paid once for it and no mas. I have no need for a giant iTouch.

Your link did not work. I googled thinking some amusing image of someone addicted to an ipad would be my reward (I like to giggle, a lot). You are responsible for this, I could have done without the link below. Don't click it. Don't. Really. Don't say I didn't warn you. Maybe something that belongs to Doc Brown who has been posting all over?

Thanks! That was funny. If I play it over and over, is that a problem?
;-) We may need to have a sit down...
Teen Drug Use: 34 Warning Signsa month from now they'll discount the price like they did with the iphone, so they can piss everybody off and get more free publicity.

I've voted NO several times. WTF?
I voted "am"... Love my Macbook & iMac. But an Apple chip? And no OSX? Consider my vote reversed.
This poll kind of gives you an idea of how many 20 somethings are bloggers on this site.
I'm a 20 something, and I'm not some trendy douchebag that spends 3X as much on a computer because it's "different."
I'd say that this poll gives you an idea of how many bloggers on this site know jack shit about technology and would blow Steve Jobs if he let them.
The iPhone OS sux. That's a dealbreaker.

Nope.
Full disclosure though: my company gave me an iPod touch for xmas.
I prefer to read dead trees on the bus.
What are the rules for using i's and e's in the names of things?
"i" used for objects (nouns)? iPad, iRod etc
"e" used for services or verbs? eTrade, eToss etc
I need to know this so I can pass as a tech douchebag at Starbucks
The first letter is used to determine which corporation will sue you and issue you a specious Cease and Desist order if you attempt to name a product with it.
Better hurry, there are only 24 letters left!
23. I believe X is already taken by the xTreme sports industry
You have to spend money to have an iphone that's worth anything. You have to pay 30 bucks a month for internet access, then you have to buy all of the neat applications/media files in order to get any real use out of it (other than for calls). The ipad will have even greater access charges and of course, the owner will be tethered to the itunes store. People who own these things (primarily the young and the gullible) either have money to burn or are complete suckers. There are a few apps (like the navigation programs) that are useful, the vast majority are fluff.
Having said that I do believe that smaller, portable devices are the future of personal computing. I'm glad that Apple is leading the way if only to present a challenge to Micro$ofts hegemony.
And even the navigation apps are 60 bucks! Who the hell would pay 60 bucks for an app that is FREE on other phones? Turn by turn GPS comes with my data plan for free. I wouldn't buy an iclone to pay extra for the same service...
I don't understand why everybody is rooting for Apple to take down Microsoft. They'd be even MORE monopolistic than Microsoft if they had a larger market share. Look at what they do in their music market with their proprietary formats and DRM gobbledygook. All of their platforms are closed to other developers unless you have their specific permission, while Microsoft will let you make anything you want for Windows. Fuck Apple. Everybody who buys into their "different" hype is an ass.
iHeater - gotta prepare for global cooling.
Marla, You need one more voting option. How about: would rather die in a house fire than participate in any more pop culture technological pap.
If real consumption is anywhere near the poll results so far, Apple will make a damn fortune.
at least 50% of those who say they won't will change their mind and finally give in...happened to the ipod, happened to the iphone. Neither of these had the stuff considered standard by heavy users.
I said I would never buy an ipod, because there were always better mp3 players out there. So eventually, I broke down and bought one for the girlfriend for her birthday last year.
Holy cow what a piece of crap! I mean, compared to other mp3 devices...
First of all, you MUST use itunes to get any music onto the device. If you buy the music from itunes, you get some proprietary, DRM infested format. If you try to use other ways to get music onto the device, it simply does not work. If you use itunes to burn your cds onto the device, you get the same whack ass m4a format instead of a format you actually want.
I could go on and on about why the ipod is technologically inferior to other devices available on the market today, but I will suffice to say that we use my 2GB mp3 player more than we use the 120 GB ipod that I bought my girlfriend for her birthday.
iPhone? LOL. It doesn't even multitask! I could go on and on about it... but there's no point.
The only thing Apple has going for it is ignorant users that have no technological understanding who worship Steve Jobs like Jesus out of some weird desire to belong. They would buy turds on a stick if it had a glowing Apple on the back.
They consistently bash Microsoft's business practices, yet defend every monopolistic ploy Apple makes as "superior technology being protected."
The day I buy an Apple is the day it has comparable technology with real compatibility with other devices at a reasonable price.
Unfortunately, Apple's products have none of those things.
So why would I buy an oversized iphone when I can get a laptop cheaper? Why would I buy an iphone when I can get a better phone?
It's bigger than a pocket, and thus requires a bag to carry.
Women with purses would be a logical market.
Thus, iPad is an awful name.
It's also going to be awkward to type on. At this size,
the device needs a keyboard.
a good name for this half computer cut be iflop.
The color features mean textbooks can be delivered digitally.
Folks who "skipped" computers can get email, web, video, music.
Big-screen GPS?
A super-capacity digital photo frame ... with email, web, video, music.
Customized news feeder. Instant magazine.
Collector of coupons (since stores can scan the barcode from the screen).
"TV" via web (Hulu.com, network sites, Daily Show, etc.)
At about double the cost of a smartphone, this seems a pretty good deal for hardware. The data plan is reasonable for new users.
A nice gift for elderly parents.
Imagine the medical information, or hobby information, or puzzles/games.
A better deal than getting a child a phone? Could set alarms, notes.
I'm seeing backpacks, purses, and cases with pad pockets.
This is the type of exciting stuff that drives a free market. Whatever iPad does, a lot of people will have a lot of fun learning about it, using it, trying aps, creating aps, and adapting it to specific user groups.
Imagine the gorgeous advertising on the way ;-)
--Best wishes from Kansas
Except it doesn't have Flash support so online video is not an option. The only people who think they're going to buy this aren't even smart enough to understand what it can't do. Should have run OSX, then it would be useful. As it is it's awful and pointless.
Have macbook (love it) and an iPhone, but didn't buy a Kindle because grayscale is a bit hard on my eyes.
if anyone comes up with an Open Source e-reader that A,mazon would make an app for, I'm a buyer.
you should take a look at one in person, it is not grayscale it is e-ink. It looks just like a printed page and is far sharper and higher resolution than an LCD or other display.
I was amped for the IPad. Then I discovered it had to data inputs. No CDs (much less DVDs), no USB chips. Nothing like that.
I'm out.
Fix your shit...
Crap. No camera. No multi-threading. Come on, it would be awesome to walk around the house and do a video call with the grandparents on this thing. No camera. Give me a break. Would that have been $2.50 extra in costs? The lack of multi-threading on my iPhone still ticks me off at times. What?! I have to quit this application in order to check my email?! Huh?
Steve, if you're reading (I know you are), it's too small.
i'm glad i refrained from making a disparaging comment about a hygiene product when there were no posts yet...
I'll probably buy one eventually for my kids but I'd never buy the first-generation model. I'll probably wait until 3G or later.
Waiting for the iPad Maxi
can i run my robotrades on it from the sh*tter. no go.
this would attract attention in public. this would not be beneficial to the goals of project mayhem.
Well, it has an IPS-technology LCD panel. Color me impressed that someone has done so in a small screen.
Now can Lenovo take note that it can be done for small panels and put Flexview back in their Thinkpads?
The best thing would be to rip the panel out, sell out the rest of the innards. Then interface as needed with a more open device.
I'm a Mac user. I like Mac OS X because I'm a UNIX nerd, and it's a nice UNIX system in many ways. The iPad? I'll guess it goes the way of the Cube and the Newton, barring some really spectacular changes (Can't access the battery without disassembly? What's up with that?). Innovative product, but really searching for a raison d'etre, and just plain common sense in certain respects. If it were hermetically sealed I could at least read the newspaper in the bathtub (good cigar would make it a trifecta).
Besides the fact that it looks like an iPhone put in the xerox machine it:
-Has it's own apple processor(watch out Intel)
-Amazing responsive multitouch
-Hardware accelerated effects.
The device is better than any windoze machine in existance. With that said, it's too expensive and limited
Apple is a software shop. They don't make hardware. Never have.
Apple is a software shop. They don't make hardware. Never have.
Wrong.
"Apple's bought itself a chip company, P.A. Semi, that could make chips for future iPods and iPhones. The company was founded by Dan Dobberpuhl, lead designer of Alpha chips, who last year announced a 64-bit dual core processor that is said to be about 300% more efficient than the nearest competition, using only 5 to 13 watts at 2GHz.
Products using the chips won't arrive for a year, at least, but we can assume that Apple wouldn't spend $278 million without some plans to use 'em soon as it made sense, and I'm sure Intel and ARM aren't stoked. The negotiations, which finished recently, took place in The Steve's home. Owning its own chip design is an interesting move. While the iPhone's had a lot of off the shelf componentry, it makes sense that working on its own internal hardware could yield better devices. "

I found that couple hours after I posted. Research it deeper. That chip is umm something not quite right about it. Like it should have died but it keeps finding faith reserve fuel tanks. Its supposed to work but won't.
Apple may just be the last sucker buyer of it. it's definitely not the first.
Thank you for the contribution. Great link!
