So you, and all y'all know, during the first big trip to the sandbox, Mike Myatt (Yes, the one that Clancy described) as a BGen, in charge of a Marine Division, in initial combat sent home like 6 Colonels, 27 1/2 colonelz, 'bout a hundred majors--cuz, well, they couldn't cut it. Division SMaj was equally selective. All to the good of the service.
It is hard playing with an organization that lives up to the stated oath. It is repulsive to me to see organizations that live to other conditions. That is becauze the internal costs are excessive and arbitrary.
Now try to find that song and album on iTunes. Go ahead. I'll wait. Guess we know what side Apple is on in this battle. Oh wait. We already did. (As I type this on my fucking iFone...)
If you want a career in the military then fine. It's a career. But you're no more a hero than a fireman, a good policeman, a high-rise construction worker, a nurse in an infectious diseases clinic, a teacher in a rough neighbourhood, a counsellor working with junkies, an aid worker in conflict-ridden 3rd world countries, deep-sea divers or protesters standing up our rights whilst beaing beaten by the police.
You can't join the military and then complain about being sent off to fight or die in needless wars because that's part of the risk of the job. Read the contract.
If you're joining the military to serve your country then ask yourself what "my country" actually means and whether it means the same thing to those you want to serve. There are plenty of other ways to serve your country that actually benefits your country. One such example is not to go off to distant lands to attack other people at the behest of the political and corporate elite. That way there are less people who feel the need to fight back and less need to spend ridiculous amounts of taxpayer money on funding the war machine. That money can then stay at home benefitting your country. And you get to stay alive.
I'm reminded of that line from Starship Troopers when they're enlisting, "fresh meat for the grinder". There never seems to be a shortage of kids willing to be served up.
bring back the draft. it is the best and most correct way for measuring the willpower of the american nation to fight its own wars.
it would be cheaper in money and more expensive in willpower and political capital. and that is what we should be spending, since it is a precious resource, and thus would make our decisions about war more sensible ( and it would likely prevent mlitary adventurism while increasing the quality of our armed forces at the very same time ) .
If the only way to get people into the military is to draft them, or even if our only hope of instilling some sort of moral fibre into the youth is to train them to kill people they've never met, then perhaps the issue is that we are the problem. We have failed.
Clearly we have already. Actually, I would say previous generations have failed. We've simply carried on the torch. More shame on us to perpetrate this in an age of abundant information.
Elections and jury by peers are in the same category with a draft army, very sound ideas, mostly good policies and tools for governance all things considered, and yet corruption ruins them all quite easily while a deceptive shell of soundness remains.
There are no solutions until the first problem at hand is dealt with. All enemies foreign and most importantly now domestic.
"... not one congressman, senator ,judge or president got hung for it."
No, but at least one Congressman and future President (Lyndon Johnson) got a silver star for taking a short flight in a war zone with little to no substantiation of heroic efforts on his part, while a few hundred thousand regular folks simply got killed there. This day is for them, not for the alleged heros.
Don't forget the piece of crap Senator Catsup with 3 (Three!) Purple Owie's, a Bronze Star and a Silver Star for four lousy months in-country and no lasting injury.

Butler thwarted the 1930s attempted American coup, the 'Business Plot', involving the Bush family ancestors of the Bush Presidents, trying to overthrow the US government.
The preferred name for the holiday gradually changed from "Decoration Day" to "Memorial Day", which was first used in 1882. It did not become more common until after World War II, and was not declared the official name by Federal law until 1967. On June 28, 1968, the Congress passed the Uniform Holidays Bill, which moved four holidays, including Memorial Day, from their traditional dates to a specified Monday in order to create a convenient three-day weekend. The change moved Memorial Day from its traditional May 30 date to the last Monday in May. The law took effect at the federal level in 1971. After some initial confusion and unwillingness to comply, all 50 states adopted Congress's change of date within a few years.
Memorial Day endures as a holiday which most businesses observe because it marks the unofficial beginning of summer. The Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) and Sons of Union Veterans of the Civil War (SUVCW) advocate returning to the original date, although the significance of the date is tenuous. The VFW stated in a 2002 Memorial Day Address:
Changing the date merely to create three-day weekends has undermined the very meaning of the day. No doubt, this has contributed a lot to the general public's nonchalant observance of Memorial Day.[25]
Since 1987, Hawaii's Senator Daniel Inouye, a World War II veteran, has introduced a measure to return Memorial Day to its traditional date.[26]

( Symbolically this would be the US version of Mayday, both the modern military version and the more traditional Pagan version)
BLAH BLAH BLAH. Don't you ever shut the fuck up? What gets into your head when you write shit like above? Do you think "people are gonna think I'm real smart if i post this meaningless drivel", or is it that you actually think the shit you type is actually interesting? I'd love to be a fly in your head.
Very classy Mr. Banzai7. I appreciate that you are able and willing to recognize the distinction between a sin and the sinner. These individuals who gave their lives did so with honor and do deserve our respect.
Ethnocentric, jingoistic Murkans slapping themselves on the back for their invasions of foreign countries in the pursuit of their own interests. Great. Pass the sick bag.
It's distressing how history rhymes over and over again. I wish we could go back to the era where the kings and princes led the armies rather than just sending others.

I do agree...and some would be expected to not live up to their oaths. Those are the ones...

lol...yes, I found myself embroiled in one of those threads recently. Arguing with a woman is usually a bad idea...arguing with two is suicidal ;-)

Good for him. His website is full of interesting writing, too.
One clear eyed, clear thinking guy there. Honesty takes real guts. Thanks for that.
A Christian pacifist who criticizes the whole of the "Left" as "male-dominated, and tokenizing of women."
Also, a guy with decades of experience as a Ranger and Special Forces guy. See the wiki.
Interesting. Thanks for the link.

Its amazing how stupid you are.
Without a sinner, there ceases to be sin.
A thug goes to pop a cap in someone so his boss can make some cash. Where's the honor? Haven't you embarrassed yourself enough for one day?
As "The Prisoner" might have put it, "You are not a number! You are a free man!"
