“Absolutely Every One” – 15 Out of 15 – Bluefin Tuna Tested In California Waters Contaminated with Fukushima Radiation

George Washington's picture

We noted more than a year ago:

The ocean currents head from Japan to the West Coast of the U.S.

***

Of course, fish don’t necessarily stay still, either. For example, the Telegraph notes that scientists tagged a bluefin tuna and found that it crossed between Japan and the West Coast three times in 600 days:

news graphics 2005 607819a “Absolutely Every One” 15 Out of 15 Bluefin Tuna Tested In California Waters Contaminated with Fukushima Radiation

That might be extreme, but the point is that fish exposed to radiation somewhere out in the ocean might end up in U.S. waters.

And see this.

CNN reports today:

Low levels of radioactive cesium from Japan’s Fukushima Daiichi nuclear accident turned up in fish caught off California in 2011, researchers reported Monday.

The bluefin spawn off Japan, and many migrate across the Pacific Ocean. Tissue samples taken from 15 bluefin caught in August, five months after the meltdowns at Fukushima Daiichi, all contained reactor byproducts cesium-134 and cesium-137 at levels that produced radiation about 3% higher than natural background sources

The Wall Street Journal quotes the studies’ authors:

“The tuna packaged it up and brought it across the world’s largest ocean,” said marine ecologist Daniel Madigan at Stanford University, who led the study team. “We were definitely surprised to see it at all and even more surprised to see it in every one we measured.”

***

“We found that absolutely every one of them had comparable concentrations of cesium-134 and cesium-137,” said marine biologist Nicholas Fisher at Stony Brook University in New York state, who was part of the study group.

The bad news is that is is only going to get worse.

As Reuters points out:

Unlike some other compounds, radioactive cesium does not quickly sink to the sea bottom but remains dispersed in the water column, from the surface to the ocean floor.

Fish can swim right through it, ingesting it through their gills, by taking in seawater or by eating organisms that have already taken it in ….

As CNN notes:

Neither [of the scientists who tested the fish] thought they were likely to find cesium at all, they said. And since the fish tested were born about a year before the disaster, “This year’s fish are going to be really interesting,” Madigan said.

“There were fish born around the time of the accident, and those are the ones showing up in California right now,” he said. “Those have been, for the most part, swimming around in those contaminated waters their whole lives.”

In other words, the 15 fish tested were only exposed the radiation for a short time. But bluefin arriving in California now will have been exposed to the Fukushima radiation for much longer.

As KGTV San Diego explains:

The real test of how radioactivity affects tuna populations comes this summer when researchers planned to repeat the study with a larger number of samples.  Bluefin tuna that journeyed last year were exposed to radiation for about a month. The upcoming travelers have been swimming in radioactive waters for a longer period. How this will affect concentrations of contamination remains to be seen.

One of the studies’ authors told the BBC:

The fish that will be arriving around now, and in the coming months, to California waters may be carrying considerably more radioactivity and if so they may possibly be a public health hazard.

Japanese and U.S. officials – of course – are pretending that the amount of radiation found in the bluefin is safe.  But the overwhelming scientific consensus is that there is no safe level of radiation … and radiation consumed and taken into the body is much more dangerous than background radiation.

Ex-skf blogspot and Fukashima diary are excellent sources for the ongoing destruction of Japan.

Especially poignant is the story of the rice farmer who moved to Australia with heirloom seed...so he could grow uncontaminated rice to send to his countymen. The way Japan is dealing with this is horrifying in the long term implications.Burning contaminated debris....and spreading the radiation around.

A total nightmare....it's kind of like watching a person who is on fire running to escape the flames...the Horror!

Japan?, sure they fucked up but what about the gulf of Mexico,BP?

and depleted Uranium and Phosphorous and god know what else in Iraq and Afghanistan?... sands that will eventually fly out westward towards the US esat coast and all the colours of slime that are out there, pink, white, grey, etc. and Monsanto destroying the bees and poisoning everything with their chemicals, .......the list goes on.....

Japan is only one culprit....

Oh ya that one too. but with Japan its not like that specific uranium is everywere naturally leaking from the seabed- like the BS they pulled on the gulf. but with this its like this specifically came from you. To me something like this would be easier, then again you are taking on a government.....  Funny how this suing thing doesn't scale if you don't invade the country.

Earthquakes are an "Act of God" and the sweet old lady that sued McD's was coerced into it by a neighborhood action group that had been trying for a long time to get McD to lower the temp on their coffee. It seems several people had been burned by their coffee. The whole story was on 60 minutes.

And yes, it did so while not expecting you to make this first step.

And nope, i don't expect any appreciation - because i didnt do it for getting approval. I just "egocentrically" approved what felt integer, logical, reasonable and honest to me, and disapproved what didn't.

I can speak from experience. About the time of this lawsuit, I stopped with a client at McDonalds to buy breakfast (and coffee) on our way to his mining claim. FORTY-FIVE (45) minutes later, we got there, I took the lid off the coffee cup, and it was still too fucking hot to drink without pain.

During the trial, it came out that McDonalds boosted the temperature of the coffee it sold to disguise the fact that it was second rate; viz., make it hot enough, and people can't taste it.

Finally, saying that this accident was this woman's fault for being careless, whatever ... well, that ignores the fact that, every single morning for decades, thousands of McDonalds handed thousands of cups of coffee to customers in cars (and still do to this day), and (get this) watch while their customers quickly stick it between their legs so as to grab the bag of Egg McMuffins®. No one ever thought "Gee, what do you suppose will happen when this container of freakin' boiling hot liquid spills all over their genitals?"

I think McDonalds got off light, and I am not a big law and order kinda guy.

Dear all,

This was predictable and in fact I predicted it along with many of my colleagues. We sent a year ago a letter of protest to the head of the EPA that at around that time had decided to stop testing for radiation contamination in food.

We never got any response.

It is all very sad. What happened in Fukushima, all the people in the Biomedical Engineering world with knowledge of nuclear bioengineering were shocked and understood that no matter what we did, the phenomenae of bioaccumulation was unstoppable without MAJOR coordinated action from governments worldwide. No organization or group of interested scientists was going to be able to do anything but scare people and make a difficult problem much worse. So it was with great sadness that we watched the authorities throw in the towel and basically accept the deaths of millions of newborns and the premature deaths of millions of adults (as predicted by the studies published from the Chernobyl disaster, 25 years after it happened). The political will was clear to make the event dissapear by pre-emptying its MSM difusion.

At the time, more than 1 year ago, we got so desperate that many of us started publishing our thoughts in the www.lunaticsoutpost.com and in the physics forum on fukushima, where you still, if you care, can find extremely useful information about the even and how you can protect yourself. Of course, there are a few lunatics in the outpost too and many bots, that only intended to cloud the discussion. I am sure that ZH readers can easily spot those and discard them.

Bioaccumulatin predicts that ratiation will be aborved in low level organisms through their feeding and breathing and that it will move up in the food chain until most of  it will reside at the top of the food chain, namely "us"... Oh, and obviously the richer the Country is the more it will absorb.

My son in-law works in the food industry and manages a large producer of gourmet foods. At the time, I told him what was going to happen, AND I TOLD EVERYBODY WHO WANTED TO HEAR ABOUT IT, many acted and moved to South America, others I don't know, and my son in law bought contracts for food supplies that were not going to be contaminated at the times and places that we indicated (lunatic...). Now that people are getting really worried (since the same way a Harley Davidson got to the West Coast, so will a lot of the radioactive sludge). Now his company can tell their customers, that are already asking, that their food is not coming from the contaminated places.

Sadly, this in only temporary, since it will bioaccumulate. It doesn't matter if the dose is below detection level today since it will bioaccumulate for your lifetime and the half life of many of the materials dumped into the ocean is of thousands of years.

Until next time,

Engineer

Just hot off  the press : the alpha omega psi beta kappa, (not frank), Corp have just declared they have invented an algae capable of sucking in all radioactive radiation in the sea and in sea life. It works on the Hadrian collider principle, only it has nano particle antennae that pick up the radio active traces and convert it thru ultra hi vibration, stimulated by seamless photonic to electronic conversion by imbedded nanoparticle captor implants, into black hole type antimatter material. This black hole "commie-matter" absorbed in the algae can then be extracted by cooking the algae at 451 F in which case the black hole generates so much energy, like a apeshit pedophile in anal harmony, you could light up Times square with 1 mm squared of algae boiled and depolluted of black radiated halographic ghost matter. If this is proven true on recurrent basis it will not ony provide a way to cure the earth of all radiation but also stock the radiated matter to subsequently generate black hole antimatter reboiled into free energy; thanks to seamless photonic conversion into electronic impulsion. Nanoscience and implants are the agent to ultra hi shaking of tuna fish muscle to deliver all its bad karma, Fukushima impulsed rotten tomatoes.

We are saved forever-more alleluiaaa!

I could become a science fiction writer now. You should drink some of this excellent wine, chardonnay from non polluted southern france (for the time being its just financial shit).

Thanks for making clear my point of relativism and ignorance.  Trial & error over a known limited space is far different than trial and error in which neither the space, consituent components, their relationships, or our ability to observe all the same, is unknown and not defined.

No funding required, only well educated in correctly applying the scientific method and understanding its limitations.   Neither of which seems to be known or practiced by the Dismal Scientists, Georgie, nor most of the 16th ranked scientifically & mathematically "educated" American public.
