When you are suddenly surrounded by violence and killing, it’s too late to train.

hedgeless_horseman's picture

My prayers and thoughts this morning are with the families of those that were killed or injured by the psychopath in Colorado, and also with my own family that attended a movie last weekend and shall do so again many times in the future.

Below, I have re-posted an email sent out this morning from Brian Hoffner in response to the Batman shooting.  Brian is a Houston Police Department officer that trains other law enforcement officers at the academy. He also conducts courses for private citizens.  At this time, in most of our nation's cities, one can find instructors like Brian that are ready, willing, and able to teach others how to not become a victim.

--------------------------------------------------------------------

7-20-12

This morning’s BATMAN SHOOTING, I wish I could have been there to stop this killer but I wasn’t. That’s the way it is...The sheepdogs wish they could have been there, the sheep are thankful that they weren’t.

This killer was prepared and calculating as he slowly made his way up the stairs and firing - picking random people. For years I have been lecturing about and preparing police and my students to defend against this kind of shooting including what to do in a movie theater because I know that it’s coming.

Responsible Americans must enjoy life while being prepared for the kooks. There are screwed up people in this world and they can appear anywhere at any moment. Be prepared for your immediate defense and the protection of their family. It is an obligation. It the reason I train Police and Responsible Citizens, but it takes more than skills and mindset,,, it also takes equipment and you have to have it with you. That’s why I have made holsters for the last quarter century and invented American Tactical Apparel Pants.

If you leave the house without your head screwed on right and without the equipment to win the sudden violent situation,,, you are a sheep, period.  Unfortunately there are so many people out there that will not do what they need to do to be prepared, and I know many of them.  They talk about it, procrastinate; find something other than the welfare of their family to spend their money and time on.  I know because I don't see them in training.  They train a little than they stop.  They may carry their gun but will be unable to respond appropriately in the blink of an eye.

I canceled this weekend’s Tactical shotgun class, why?  No one signed up for the best shotgun training in the world.  No one signed up to retake at half price so they could work on getting their 5 shot time below two seconds.

So I will scratch my head, like I do when only a handful show up for SoSu on Saturday mornings, and I wonder why I am failing to motivate those who should not need to be motivated.  For those of you attending day 2 of Tactical Pistol Sunday, congratulations, but like I told you in class, many of you will go no further.

We have the opportunity under our Constitution to ensure life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness for ourselves and for our families.  The future will hold many challenges to our constitution and to us as individuals.

When your test comes suddenly and violently you will know who, and what, you are at that millisecond.  You will understand what is happening is real and you will be glad that you are there to protect your family and save others and gloriously you will act with skill, ability, and confidence.  Or you will doubt your ability, be overcome by fear, of no help to yourself or others...a sheep.

Sheep Dog Warriors are not apathetic and putting things off.  They are tired because they are driven, always working, and training regardless.  Get it together people, don't be sheep!

When you are suddenly surrounded by violence and killing, it’s too late to train, your skills toolbox must already be in order.  You have to believe in what you can do and gloriously get it done, confidently, reactively, effectively.  You know what is happening is real and you are glad to be there.  This is why you train, this is why you prepare, this is why you spend so much time, money, and energy on all of it...because you are Sheepdog.

Wishing you safety through will, determination, and training,

Brian Hoffner

I'm sorry - was just being the class clown.

Shuriken is an art form. I can throw, but not with accuracy. I don't know about guns man... I am averse to them. Throwing sharp objects, however, seems more organic. Sometimes I wish we never touched metal.

It's not about the metal, bro. Flint arrowheads on willow shafts are deadly. So are simple wooden clubs. But, unless it's a desperate hand-to-hand situation, the next war's not gonna be won using such weapons. The old adage about not bringing a knife to a gunfight still rings true.

Please get some gun training, and pray that you never have to pull the trigger on another human being. The guilt you would feel about dispatching an intruder bent on harming you and yours is nothing compared to the emotions you would experience if you were unable to defend your loved ones from one who wished them harm.

Knife throwing is a valuable learned survival skill. It just so happens I taught my 12-year old nephew the basics just this last weekend.  We also went through survival fishing, making fire using a bow drill, and using a 'bow'.

These are skills that may save his life someday.  No one ever took ME aside when I was 12 and showed me these things.  They are confidence builders, and in fact, fun.

I have been a 'survivalist' since the age of 21, upon discharge from the United States Marine Corps.  My country taught me how to go to foriegn lands, meet interestiing people, and kill them.  That's right, a hired killer for the government.

NOW, however, the government wants to take away any ability I may have to defend myself.  I have a right to carry a firearm.  It is a born right.  I don't need a 'permit' to defend myself.  I don't need a 'class'.  The 'gov' wants to stick their nose up your ass and know every detail about you, and charge you for the privelege.  I will always have the ability to defend myself from personal injury, in ANY place, or situation.  If I go to jail as a result, then, fuck 'em.  Live on your knees or die on your feet.

I have taught others to throw a knife, and shoot, and load magazines, as well.  These were 'younger' people who had never shot a gun.

I feel like I'm training 'Sarah Conner' for the eventual 'rise of the machines'.  I think the near future (next 3 to 5 years?) is going to be VERY different than the one most young adults are experiencing now.

It's a good feeling knowing I had a hand in training the revolutionaries.

What an interesting contrast. I am teaching my young ones how fractional reserve banking works. And things like how to set up a commodities brokerage firm, and then use the investor's money to buy risky complicated derivatives and reap the profits. Also, how to blackmail and bribe politicians, which defense contractors have the deepest pockets ... Real word skills.

"Open Carry" is legal in all 50 states, that was clearly important enough to be stated in our one legal document that supercedes all others, by our FOUNDING FATHERS , 2nd only to Freedom of Speech and the right to assemble (peacefully or NOT)

Anyone that tries to tell you otherwise should be shot and dressed out right there on the spot. Period.

Notwithstanding what's in the 2nd amendment, or how you believe it should be interpreted, open carry is most certainly not legal in all 50 states. For example, in Texas, it's not legal (hard to believe, but true).

Another example: in California it was legal until January 1, 2012, when open carry of handguns was made a misdemeanor. Open carry of long guns is still legal but it appears that this will also be criminalized soon. Federal laws also regulate open carry of firearms in the vicinity of schools, as do some states' laws.

Questions of legality aside, the unfortunate reality is that in many states openly carrying a gun is likely to get you shot, or at least jacked up, by the police.

talk to any cop...  if they can see a filled gun rack in your back glass, they are LESS worried about you...  think about why that might be...  same reason that when you tell them you have a concealed handgun license and that you're packing they tell you not to unholster it, just keep it there, and then issue you a warning instead of a ticket...

I am always suspicious of why any government would issue a permit...on a right.

Is it revenue, snooping or just random data collection?

No slam, jus sayin...I'm very old school on my rights and natural law which always supercede the latest and greatest ;-)

It's the "good guy" data collection.  Basically, to get a CC permit, you'll have to send in the fingerprint cards and the whole nine yards...  if the background check comes back clean, then you're good to go...  so they get quite a bit of data AND get to determine who plays for the home team...  and at about $250/pop, the state gets plenty of revenue also.  Win all around.

Yep, happened to me a few times since I got my CCW license. The policeman does not seem overly concerned about the gun at all, and I have either gotten a warning, or been told to have a nice night and sent on my way. I have had at least four incidents I can remember since 2003 where I should have gotten a ticket, and did not.

The cost of the license has more than paid for itself in money saved on tickets.

Wow, dude, why are you so angry? Did you notice that I wrote "unfortunate" reality?

I agree with some of what you wrote. However, your statement that open carry is legal in 50 states is factually incorrect. I corrected it mostly so that some young fool doesn't read it and think s/he's going to be fine openly carrying a firearm anywhere in the 50 states.

I really couldn't care less if you insult me, but today's unfortunate (there's that word again) reality is: in some states, walking around with an openly carried gun is likely to get you shot or jacked up by the police. I don't like that, or agree with it, but it is what it is. Changing that is a whole other discussion.

Here in AZ open and concealed carry are both legal without a permit.  With the AZ permit you can carry in other reciprocal states.  We used to have to go through a CCW renewal class, but now it's just a money grab to keep your permit.

You can be aware of what's happened, and alert to what is happening, and reacting to that while planning for the future as you see fit. You can do all of those things without being angry. Motivation will help you accomplish things. Anger usually won't.

I think it would be a good thing if all young men and women knew how to use and care for firearms. I started with a .22 rifle when I was about 12. In the decades since I've continued to use and care for them off and on. However, I don't agree that breaking the gun laws in my state are the best way to go about changing them. All that would accomplish is to get me heavily fined at a minimum, and possibly locked up with my weapons confiscated by the same government you described. I don't see how that helps anyone, least of all other responsible gun owners. Nor am I prepared to start shooting the cops who would try to take away my guns should I decide to carry them openly in my state. Are you?

As I mentioned before, insults don't bother me, but kindly stop calling me a troll. A bit of research will show you what I've contributed to this and other debates, e.g. http://twitter.com/zecacetudo or http://www.zerohedge.com/article/fdic-foia-discloses-pandit-future-could-promptly-converge-ken-lewis#comment-85664 (that last one goes back to Oct 2009; how long have you been a member here?)

So, are you prepared - today - to shoot the police who would try to take your guns away in some states should you carry them openly?

I doubt it. It's more likely your entire schtick is just keyboard commando stuff, especially considering the tone of most of your other comments. In fact, I wouldn't be surprised if you didn't own a single firearm. It's hard to afford them when you make $7/hour. (http://www.zerohedge.com/contributed/chairsatan-isnt-worried-about-infla...)

Since you mentioned a CHP tax, it's a safe bet you live in California too. Which means the police are definitely going to jack you up when the sheeple call 911, which they will do because they're especially scared of guns here. There are examples of this all over YouTube: www.youtube.com/results?search_query=California+open+carry+police
