"The good, say the mystics of spirit, is God, a being whose only definition is that he is beyond man's power to conceive- a definition that invalidates man's consciousness and nullifies his concepts of existence...Man's mind, say the mystics of spirit, must be subordinated to the will of God... Man's standard of value, say the mystics of spirit, is the pleasure of God, whose standards are beyond man's power of comprehension and must be accepted on faith....The purpose of man's life...is to become an abject zombie who serves a purpose he does not know, for reasons he is not to question." Ayn Rand has been fucking right 90% of the time about our coming dystopia. She's the female George Orwell. That's a Hall of Fame career. She came from communist Russia and knew what she was talking about and lived it.

Objectivism: The butcher, the baker, and the beer maker don't do what they do so you can eat; they do what they do so they can eat. But by doing what is in their own self interest they produce the most good for others and society, so they can all eat, and in the most efficient way at no cost to society. Therefore, what is immoral is for society and governments to judge his process out of envy, or hinder it because that is when people will suffer.

She never compromised on this point and, in the same sense, would say it would be immoral for somebody like a Thomas Edison or Henry Ford to hold back themselves because of criticism from others.

Henry Ford and Bill Gates became rich bastards but who cares?  Everybody else has benefitted beyond belief from what they did. The anti-Rand crowd is arguing it's not fair and we should stop people like them to save saddle makers and to keep the US postal service and snail mail thriving. Really?? That's medieval.

Paulie Ayn Ryan's favorite song on his ipod as stated (CNN interview)...listens to it every time he works out.

Led Zeppelin Gallows Pole from Led Zeppelin III

Hangman hangman hold it a little while
Think I see my friends coming
Riding a many mile.
Friends, did you get a little silver?
Did you get a little gold?
What did you bring me, my dear friends,
To keep me from the Gallows Pole?
What did you bring me to keep me from the Gallows Pole?

I couldn't get no silver I couldn't get no gold
You know that we're too damn poor
To keep you from the Gallows Pole.

Hangman hangman hold it a little while,
I think I see my brother coming
Riding a many mile.
Brother did you get me some silver?
Did you get a little gold?
What did you bring my my brother
To keep me from the Gallows Pole?

Brother, I brought you some silver
I brought a little gold
I brought a little of ev'ry thing
To keep you from the Gallows Pole.
Yes I brought you to keep you from the Gallows Pole.

Hangman hangman turn your head awhile
I think I see my sister coming
Riding a many mile mile mile mile mile.
Sister I implore you, take him by the hand
Take him to some shady bower
Save me from the wrath of this man
Please take him
Save me from the wrath of this man man.

Hangman, hangman upon your face a smile
Pray tell me that I'm free to ride
Ride for many mile mile mile.

Oh yes you got a fine sister
She warmed my blood from cold
Brought my face to boiling hot
To keep you from the Gallows Pole
Your brother brought me silver
Your sister warmed my soul
But now I laugh and pull so hard
And see you swinging on the Gallows Pole

It's not nice to use nihilism (or chaos) as synonyms for anarchism. If anarchists were actually nihilists, they wouldn't bother with anarchism. They'd just conform to the status quo because that is the easiest thing to do. Nihilists go to work, pay taxes, eat pink slime, drink diet coke and turn the channel when the news comes on because they only care about Kim Kardashian's ass.

Don't fall into the trap of believing that rejecting a situation that has become untenable is anarchism. That is precisely what they want everyone to believe.

Historically, there really is not much new about this game. The entrenched will have the upper hand until they are punished by forces beyond their control.

Ayn Rand WAS a speed-freak sociopath. And a writer. Now a man running for second highest office in the land has based his political philosophy on her fictional book.

If you wrote a book, incorporating all of the above, no one would publish it for being 'too far fetched'.

There are two novels that can change a bookish fourteen-year old’s life: The Lord of the Rings and Atlas Shrugged. One is a childish fantasy that often engenders a lifelong obsession with its unbelievable heroes, leading to an emotionally stunted, socially crippled adulthood, unable to deal with the real world. The other, of course, involves Orcs.”

Bingo!  I loved both books when I was in college -- 40 years ago.  Once the acne clears up and maturity sets in, most of us get beyond Rand.  Worshipping at that alter is indeed for the for either the young and foolish, or the greedy and self-serving.

Much as I loved Jack London's stories of true independence and self-reliance, or the epic Lonesome Dove and other stories about the seemingly unlimited bounty offered up by America - the new world - those days are long gone...and not coming back.

There are no alternatives to big government.  Society is far too complex.  The whole idea of government being the problem is a straw man constructed by politicians to knock down.  The problem is those who we elect to office.  I consider myself an Independent, and have voted for members of both parties on several occaisions, though I do admit to voting more often D than R.  Mostly for reasons of perceived self defense.  It has always amused me to listen to the R's rail against government, all the while having total control of both House's of Congress and the Presidency the majority of the time since 1980.

No, the problem is piss-poor leadership and selling out the country for personal gain.  These new Tea Party twits are just about the worst panderers to come along in my lifetime, and I have been involved in the process since the Goldwater campaign.  Their level of maturity is about that of 7th grade boys.

I still love tolkein, however ;-)

Really. Its interesting that you (and yourself) identify a rational value system as irrational, and a work of violent propaganda targetting children (in fact, just like the bible) as rational.

As a survivor of the Russian revolution Ayn Rand wrote from her personal experience, warning us of the growing cancer. Her writing is reaffirmed by survivors of this and other political atrocities, including Hitler's Germany.

As an unsuccessful product of Sanford Military Academy, Tolkien envied the Greek, German and Irish mythologies. He deeply believed that if England had such a solid cultural tradition, they could march more children before the guns and sack more territory. Poor Mr. Tolkien. Instead of inspiring another holocaust as he hoped, Mr. Tolkien inspired the beats and peaceniks. He died a disappointed and bitter man, envious of more effective propagandists like Ian Flemming & L Ron Hubbard.

It is also interesting how a certain group consistently debunks Ayn Rand by identifying her work as appropriate for 14 y.o. and not adults. This same group also insists that adults are at least as stupid as 14 y.o., and need their crazy nanny to look after them...

I see. You've never studied Tolkien, Rand, Flemming, or even Hubbard, so your defense of your ignorance of the subject upon which you advance your assertion that rationalism is for children and sleazy nanny states rule, is to criticize me for doing so and having done so, developed a comprehensive worldview in which rationalism prevails over fantasy. Thats pretty weak... sir.

Nope...never studied 'em.  Never spent too much time in an Ivory tower, either, but do have a wealth of experience with the animalistic nature of man.

For me, Tolkein & Rand are each fantasy.  Tolkein has his single Lord of Darkness, while Rand's source of evil is a crushing society of mediocre individuals.  Polar opposites, yes?  Reality tells me neither are completely correct, but both have their own truths.

It's a fascinating journey we are on...Bon Voyage!
