Fukushima Japan Fukushima Radiation: Japan Irradiates the West Coast of North AmericaPainting by Jonathan Raddatz

Radiation from Japan’s nuclear accident has turned up in seaweed on the coasts of California, Washington and other parts of the West Coast of North America.

The ocean is so big … how could this be happening? Why didn’t the gigantic Pacific Ocean better dilute Fukushima radiation?

A 1955 U.S. government report concluded that the ocean may not adequately dilute radiation from nuclear accidents.

MIT says that seawater which is itself radioactive may begin hitting the West Coast within 5 years.

In 10 years, peak radioactive cesium levels off of the West Coast of North America could be 10 times higher than at the coast of Japan.

As we’ve previously noted, Reuters reports that Alaskan seals are suffering mysterious lesions and hair loss:

Scientists in Alaska are investigating whether local seals are being sickened by radiation from Japan’s crippled Fukushima nuclear plant.

Scores of ring seals have washed up on Alaska’s Arctic coastline since July, suffering or killed by a mysterious disease marked by bleeding lesions on the hind flippers, irritated skin around the nose and eyes and patchy hair loss on the animals’ fur coats.

“We recently received samples of seal tissue from diseased animals captured near St. Lawrence Island with a request to examine the material for radioactivity,” said John Kelley, Professor Emeritus at the Institute of Marine Science at the University of Alaska Fairbanks.

“There is concern expressed by some members of the local communities that there may be some relationship to the Fukushima nuclear reactor’s damage,” he said.

Here’s a picture of one of the injured seals:

We reported yesterday that a new scientific paper shows that the Fukushima radioactive plume contaminated the entire Northern hemisphere during a relatively short period of time, and Ene News today reports on a potential correlation:

(Note the blue line):

Map of Marine Life Deaths:

Seal Map Fukushima Radiation: Japan Irradiates the West Coast of North AmericaEne Comparison Fukushima Radiation: Japan Irradiates the West Coast of North America

(The correlation is not exact … but close enough to ask whether the radioactive plume hit Western Alaska and was then carried around the coast by ocean currents.)

Radioactive fish are also being found off the West Coast.

A California-sized island of debris from Japan is also hitting the West Coast.

And West Coast residents have also been exposed to Fukushima radiation from the air.  See this, this and this.

Indeed, some doctors claim that people living on the West Coast have already been killed from Fukushima radiation.

Fukushima … the gift that keeps on giving.

United States Circumvented Laws To Help Japan Accumulate Tons of Plutonium « DC Bureau

By Joseph Trento, on April 9th, 2012

National Security News Service

The United States deliberately allowed Japan access to the United States’ most secret nuclear weapons facilities while it transferred tens of billions of dollars worth of American tax paid research that has allowed Japan to amass 70 tons of weapons grade plutonium since the 1980s, a National Security News Service investigation reveals. These activities repeatedly violated U.S. laws regarding controls of sensitive nuclear materials that could be diverted to weapons programs in Japan. The NSNS investigation found that the United States has known about a secret nuclear weapons program in Japan since the 1960s, according to CIA reports.

A year ago a natural disaster combined with a man-made tragedy decimated Northern Japan and came close to making Tokyo, a city of 30 million people, uninhabitable. Nuclear tragedies plague Japan’s modern history. It is the only nation in the world attacked with nuclear weapons. In March 2011, after a tsunami swept on shore, hydrogen explosions and the subsequent meltdowns of three reactors at the Fukushima Nuclear Power Plant spewed radiation across the region. Like the bombs dropped on Hiroshima and Nagasaki, Japan will face the aftermath for generations. A twelve-mile area around the site is considered uninhabitable. It is a national sacrifice zone.

How Japan ended up in this nuclear nightmare is a subject the National Security News Service has been investigating since 1991. We learned that Japan had a DUAL USE nuclear program. The public program was to develop and provide unlimited energy for the country. But there was also a secret component, an undeclared nuclear weapons program that would allow Japan to amass enough nuclear material and technology to become a major nuclear power on short notice.

That secret effort was hidden in a nuclear power program that by March 11, 2011– the day the earthquake and tsunami overwhelmed the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Plant – had amassed 70 metric tons of plutonium. Like its use of civilian nuclear power to hide a secret bomb program, Japan used peaceful space exploration as a cover for developing sophisticated nuclear weapons delivery systems.

Political leaders in Japan understood that the only way the Japanese people could be convinced to allow nuclear power into their lives was if a long line of governments and industry hid any military application. For that reason, a succession of Japanese governments colluded on a bomb program disguised as innocent energy and civil space programs. The irony, of course, is that Japan had gone to war in 1941 to secure its energy future only to become the sole nation attacked with nuclear weapons.

But George, the Soviets and others have been dumping WHOLE REACTOR CORES into the Arctic for decades and we haven't seen these same effects.  How is dumping a hot reactor into the sea and paddling away quickly going to result in different consequences from a broken reactor leaking into the ocean?  Serious question.

George Washington's picture

Serious answer:  The STORAGE POOLS at Fukushima - not the reactors - contain insane amounts of radiation.

Excessive cesium found in 9 types of fish caught near Fukushima plant

FUKUSHIMA, Japan, Sept. 19, Kyodo

Tokyo Electric Power Co. said Wednesday that excessive levels of radioactive cesium were detected in nine types of fish caught between Aug. 20 and Sept. 5 in the sea within a 20-kilometer range of the crippled Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant.

Cesium measuring as much as 1,350 becquerels per kilogram was found in greenling hauled 1 km off the coast of Minamisoma in Fukushima Prefecture on Sept. 5. The level of cesium was far higher than the 100 becquerels deemed by the Japanese government as safe for consumption.

The utility, which operates the crisis-hit nuclear plant, also said 540 becquerels and 390 becquerels of radioactive cesium per kg were detected respectively in rock fish and skate caught in the waters.

The way to tell if it's safe (albeit indirect) is to see if the foreign Embassies there in Japan allow their younger staff with children to return. I notice the Dutch and Germans were out the Embassy doors on the next flight out within hours after the leak occurred despite the Gubbermint there telling everyone there was no problem. I'd watch those two in particular since they seem more alert to environemtnal hazards like this then others.

Best to watch what they do as opposed what they say.

There are counter psy-op units now authorized to do that to USA citizen people!

It was recently authorized to use them in CONUS. Previously, they were restricted to OCONUS ops.

You can research it, all I found was open-sourced. You just have to look.

The "MSM" is the largest source of intensive black/grey propaganda, however. The idea that a u-toob blurb started riots in MENA was a joke to begin with. It was obvious the attack in Libya was carefully staged. Everything including the kitchen sink is being tossed out to protect Richard Milhous 'Dick' O'Bama. Distraction including the 47% comment by Mittens, for example, when there are tons of videos of Dick telling us how he will redistribute our money, kill the coal industry, Canadian pipeline, and in general, make us into Zimbabwe  while he plays the Mugabe role. No thanks. I may have to hold my nose to vote for Mittens, but I am convinced he has some decent values, whereas Dick is no different a psychopath than Adolf Hitler. You ought to do some research on Dick's obsession with Drone Murder. He really gets off on that, like Adolf did watching the July 1944 conspirators swing by their necks on piano wire.

Said purpose of military psyops is to counter jihadis, which is no doubt a good idea.

But, one must wonder if they have another agenda.

Keep stackin, GW.

That photo of the seal is pretty sickening. Here's the weird thing. According to the Alaska Dispatch from a late 2011 article, radiation testing on the seals was supposed to be performed over the holidays. Then, in February, Yahoo news reported that testing found no signs of radiation in the seals. However, according to this June 25, 2012 Q&A posted on the NOAA website tracking this "Unusual Mortality Event (UME)":

"What is the new date for release of University of Alaska Fairbanks radiation testing results?
Muscle and liver samples from sick and healthy seals were collected in 2011 and 2012 for radionuclide analysis, specifically cesium 134/137. All the muscle samples had to undergo an extensive four week freeze-drying process in preparation for analysis and are currently being analyzed. Preliminary analysis of control samples from healthy seals has been completed and composite tissue samples from diseased seal samples are undergoing analysis. As soon as final results are available they will be provided."

In the February preliminary NOAA statement from February, it looks like some sort of politician weasel-worded it. It claims that a preliminary qualitative assessment showed that levels of radiation from a few samples were too low to have caused the lesions and hair loss. Since measurement of levels is by-definition quantitative, either NOAA doesn't know what they are talking about, or they're trying to whitewash the radiation issue. It comes across to me in much the same way the NIST report of WTC7 did: a conclusion that needs a justification. They're actually very candid in the statement, saying "scientists do not believe that radiation is a primary factor in this UME or that radiation is causing the symptoms and deaths in pinnipeds." I don't see any evidence supporting that claim, so I'll wait until I see what they publish before deciding.

The other thing I wonder is if these skin lesions and hair loss problems are due not from internal emitters, but simply from swimming through highly radioactive currents at some point in their travels, which apparently includes a large range. In that case, concentrations in tissues would be meaningless, and it's more consistent with all the skin effects.

lakecity55's picture

Man, I hate to see these creatures suffer. I wish there was a way to round them up, decontaminate them, and have a holding area for them until the radiation decays more.

It's even worse to realize USA Citizen persons are not getting even the level of attention the seals are. You know it's bad, since the gubbermint would be all over itself with data and information if there was no real threat. Their Silence condemns them.

There are more ways to kill than just building a Bergen-Belsen.

oldman's picture

I can't help much on this, but I do know that seals are fairly near the top of the food chain and that there diet must be full of whatever cumulative contamination levels there are in those species below them. So, Studies on the seals will probably tell as well as any other species the condition the North Pacific Ocean.

If these studies of seals are conclusive and confirm the FEARS of many people, then we should not expect too much from the US gov't since all along they have denied that Fukishima is a problem for us. Not a conspiracy, but rather, just good management of the business model of the fascist state. Maybe the data just contradicts all that has been reported so far.

Anyway, the fun will begin when there is no ice in the Arctic and---where are those sea currents going to go----and then there is the wind----and maybe more bad nukes---or edven a few hundred nuclear weapons going off in the Middle East----

The black swan event was Fukishima and it is unfolding at its own pace. I guess the universe's experiment with our species is being abandoned---keep stacking because maybe you will be a survivor and you can-------uh, what will you do with those gold, what will I do?

I'm certain I miscalculated somewhere---it can't be this bleak----I'll think about this some more and get back to you    I must be an idiot!          om

But they are worried about not getting iPhone 5 sooner.

UncleB3n's picture

My company is currently working on the incident and the airborne plume is of much graver concern than the seaborn plume. It is true that the airborne plume has spread throughout the northern hemisphere and the entire west coast of the United States has been irradiated. We probably will not see the true impact of the exposure at least for another decade but the world is already doomed because during the 50's and early 60's with nuclear weapons testing enough radiation was introduced into the atmosphere to contaminate at least six generations of Americans and an unknown quantity abroad. Seeing as we are only really two or three generations removed, we are still suffering effects from it today and my case in point is the global cancer rate. 1/2 men, 1/3 women worldwide, and it came from the birth of the bomb.

Dermasolarapaterraphatrima's picture

I saw that the MGH reported higher levels of radiation out there in Boston awhile back. I don't know what the recent numbers are.....It's to be expected higher levels of cancer, birth defects, etc will be seen due not only to Fuki radiation raining down on us, but also the much higher levels of pesticides in just about every foor we ingest.

TyrannoSoros Wrecks's picture

Radiation is a measurable thing. How about some numbers?

And the dead seal looks like any old dead, partially decomposed seal that washes up on the beach in Washington or Oregon.

caustixoid's picture

You've seen a lot of dead seals on the beaches have you TSW?   Got a good eye for this sort of thing?  I'm pretty sure that's a live seal, since the blood is BRIGHT RED, as in freshly oxygenated.    That oozing bald patch is from some kind of pathology -- although as with almost any of the myriad effects of radiation it is difficult to pin definitively on radiation, except using large population studies (which will not be funded).

TyrannoSoros Wrecks's picture

Actually I have seen quite a few over the years.
Even 2 on one beach once on Nestucca Spit, OR.

fajensen's picture

I would blame something immediately toxic like the vast amount of Corexite poured into the Gulf long before radiation.

To get visible wounds, obscene levels of radiation is needed. The long-term effects of radiation exposure are immune system deficiencies, cancer e.t.c. which as a side effect might produce bleeding wounds, but - we are not into "long-term" yet. Give it 4-5 years.

George Washington's picture
