Bruce Springsteen Slams Wall Street Pillaging of America In Powerful New Anthem

George Washington's picture

Here are the lyrics:

No cannonballs did fly
No rifles cut us down
No bombs fell from the sky
No blood soaked the ground
No powder flash blinded the eye
No deafening thunder sounded
But just as sure as the hand of god
They brought death to my hometown
They brought death to my hometown

No shells ripped the evening sky
No cities burning down
No armies stormed the shores for which we’d die
No dictators were crowned
High off on a quiet night
I never heard a sound
The marauders raided in the dark and brought death to my hometown, boys
Death to my hometown

They destroyed our families’ factories and they took our homes
They left our bodies on the plains
The vultures picked our bones

So listen up, my Sonny boy
Be ready for when they come
For they’ll be returning sure as the rising sun

Now get yourself a song to sing and sing it ’til you’re done
Yeah, sing it hard and sing it well
Send the robber baron’s straight to hell
The greedy thieves that came around
And ate the flesh of everything they’ve found
Whose crimes have gone unpunished now
Walk the streets as free men now

And they brought death to our hometown, boys
Death to our hometown, boys
Death to our hometown, boys
Death to our hometown

This makes me want to record my own song "Feel the Power" even more.

I'm sure he felt pretty self-righteous as he rode his limo back to his palatial estate in Rumson.  "Man of the people".

I enjoyed your anger but I wish you had been able to incorporate the word "fuck" into it somehow.

I would much rather listen to Dylan's Working Man Blues #2 than this crappy Springsteen song.

Dylan grew up in the Iron Range, after the glory years.  That is an education, right there.

Where does Bruce keep the millions he made over the years. Pretending to give a shit about the small people like Buffett and the rest. Seriously think celebrities would do anything for the common man that might inconvience them?

Writing a song won't do shit! He is no better than any other political hack. Next time he talks to his big time Dem pals think he will actually bring up any issues? I'm going with no.

He might have a little more credibility if he didn't own a large place in Rumson, NJ which is a haven for the scumbags that roam the Wall Street cesspool.  I wonder if he tells his neighbors to their faces what lowlife pieces of shit they are.  Or does he go to gala gatherings and rub elbows with the cocksuckers.

Has he told Obama how big a piece of shit he is for having Timothy Geithner as his Treasury Secretary?  Springsteen is a blowhard.

He, and those wall street scumbags are for the most part 'rat heavy donators.  Doesn't matter what you do in life for them, just so long as the lever pulling masses pull the right lever and get scattered some paper chicken feed and feel good mantras at regular intervals.

Anyone with a losable job and income under ~125K/year should be using every minute made available by TPTB to get out of debt and position themselves for economic Gotterdamerung, acting like it's for all intents and purposes next week, but being mentally prepared to have them string the game out for 5+ years.

It's not rocket science, the odds are that the moronorate has succeded in harnessing the masses to the galley oars for a trip over the Victoria Falls of the end of yet another fiat system, we can only thank God that their numbers reached a tipping point at essentially the same time we were effectively broke, could you imagine the freakin' Orwellian cornholing we'd be receiving if we were at this point with a clean balance sheet?!?!

They are just a bunch of fucking ideologues.  They hate the Blue Team.  Springsteen associated himself with the Blue Team, therefore he is to be hated.  What he says matters not.  It's Tribal.  It's childish.  It's what drives most political discourse in this country.  The "hate thy neighbor because he's on the other team" mentality is the root of the reason the current rulers have won and why they will stay in power.

I haven't heard the new album yet but I hope he wrote a song about how we would distract ourselves picking each other apart while the plutocrats raped and pillaged. If you're waiting for the perfect leader he/she has never and never will appear. Many people would argue that the end of the Vietnam war began with the folk music movements of the 70's. You don't think that Buffalo Springfield, Bob Dylan, or Joan Baez had a few skeletons in their closets?

Mon, 03/05/2012 - 14:32 | 2224575 WestVillageIdiot

I don't understand your skeleton comment.  I think the people that made the music were humans that suffer from the shortcomings we all suffer from.

The folk movement was in the early 60s.  Blowin' in the Wind, Masters of War and The Times They Are-A-Changin' definitely led to different attitudes about war.

Too bad we now have hip-hop and military worship as far as the eye can see.

Of more relevance, why give a shit what a musician thinks about the current political situation? Or an actor? Or a pro athlete? Springsteen's just another showbiz lemming, voting for whoever the in-crowd annoints, attacking whatever the in-crowd deems uncool. Fuck him and his underbite.

Yeah, where is that ass hole Bob Dylan when his country needs him? He is probably taking a nap. Even if you woke him up no one would understand a garbled word he would utter. He probably figures he has done his bit and someone else should stand up.

Congratulations on being "Moron of the Day".  Let's hate Dylan because he is Jewish.  Never mind that he was a one-man musical revolution.

Listening to Dylan's music has made my life a richer experience.  It is a true joy to listen to Like a Rolling Stone or Idiot Wind.

The Pogues have a better song. It applies to bankers and politicians both equally.

"Rake at the gates of hell"

I'll be with them asleep and dreaming
I'll be there when they wake with screaming
At the hour of death then I will nurse them
To have a moment more to curse them
Watch the maggots crawl out of them
Hear the angels call above them
Watch them as the cold air sucks them
Down to hell, goodnight, God love them
If any should escape above me
Beg and cheat until they trust me
Drag them down to be damned with me
Laugh at them as they forgive me

Mother's eyes are sparkling diamonds,
Still the moon shows no light
This rose is withered, may God deliver
The rake at the gates of hell tonight
Yigh!

I wish that they could walk forever,
On the earth, alone, unfettered
Til they pray for consolation,
Til they beg for sweet damnation
Then I'll come and bring them water,
Bring them hope, bring them laughter
Raise their hopes so sad and sunken
Slash them up as they lie there drunken
Push them down into the foul mud
‘Til they choke up on their own blood
Drag them out before their last breath
To take away the mercy of death

Mother's eyes are sparkling diamonds
Still the moon shows no light
This rose is withered, may God deliver
The rake at the gates of hell tonight
Yigh!

Mother's eyes are sparkling diamonds
Still the moon shows no light
This rose is withered, may God deliver
The rake at the Gates of Hell tonight

Mother's eyes are sparkling diamonds
Still the moon shows no light
This rose is withered, may God deliver
The rake at the gates of hell tonight
