You're missing an important distinction here. Murder is personal, killing not. Even most of the Bible translations miss this one, so you're not alone. how else can you reconcile that the chosen people kill the crap out of other tribes, and that's cool, yet there's this commandment "thou shall not do murder", usually translated wrong as "kill" - which is very different - and things make a lot more sense once you get this one.
