I really like that photograph. It tells two stories. First how hurricane Donna flooded Manhattan in the 60s. The signage etc captures the period nicely.
But look at that guy in the raincoat. He is determined to get to wherever it is he is going with his briefcase under his arm.
I wonder how the subways managed to survive back then. I remember the hurricane as a concept but I don't remember any details.
WB7- You must have a few years on me. I remember the name "donna" as a storm, but no details. I grew up in the Bronx in the 60's. I DO remember walking to church in 20 inchs of snow during a blizzard there though. Think I was all of about 8-9 years old. New York is a great place to be from.
What I remember about the storm was how it tore up all the railing along the Verrazano Narrows by the Belt Parkway. My parents would drive us there for ice cream etc every now and then. I also remember it tearing up Coney Island.
The snow storms back then were definitely bigger.
so New York in 2012 is as 'well-prepared' as New York in the 1960's

The subway system is like Kennedy Airport. Everyone from the rest of the world marvels at its primitiveness.
same everywhere on the planet... Londons tube is as nasty (and chilly in winter) as it ever was, and it's gone backwards as there's no toilets but even more security cameras (remove the useful, replace with useless) and some recorded tosser patronises you even more often over the speakers
tube, bus, tram, train are all just seats, that haven't moved forward isince Brunel sold them to Govt. No mandated airbags or seatbelts which the politicians pile on top of private cars, no stereo, heated vents, air-con, cupholders (can't eat or drink on public transport now either)
while cars and airlines get ever more luxurious or even greater value for money with budget airlines public transport fulfills the script of any Govt project or corporate monopoly and just rots in a technological timewarp stand-still gettign ever more expensive and just plain dumber by the day

It doesn't have to be that way. Hong Kong has an awesome mass transit system. Cars are purely an accoutrement.
Apparently London is a model city because they figured out how to force all the little guys off the road so chauffeur driven limos and car services can move freely. They collect the fees to finance bureaucracy instead of improving the lot for commuters who have to suffer like sausages.
The whole of inner London is set up for the convenience of the Bankstertocracy.
