Why Californians Should Vote

George Washington's picture

Do We Have a Right to Know If Our Food Has Been Genetically Modified?Painting by Anthony Freda: www.AnthonyFreda.com.

Some smart people say that we shouldn’t vote tomorrow.  See this, this, this and this.

We believe that voting for a third party presidential candidate is a valuable act.    Even though California has more than 10% of the American population, California will obviously go to Obama, and so there is no reason for Californians to worry about swaying the election.  So we believe that Californians should definitely vote for the third party candidate of their choice.

But even if our California readers aren’t planning on voting in the presidential race, there is a very important reason to go to the polls and vote tomorrow.

We have a right to know if our food has been genetically modified, especially since genetically engineered foods have been linked to obesity, cancer, liver failure, infertility and all sorts of other diseases.   Watch  brief videos of scientists talking about this issue here and here.

Vote YES on proposition 37, to force the big agrichemical companies like Monsanto and DuPont to label genetically modified foods … so that we as consumers have the CHOICE about what we buy.

Even though past polls have shown Californians overhwhelmingly favor proposition 37, support has been plummeting since Monsanto and the other gmo giants have poured millions into defeating proposition 37 with deceptive advertisements.  Indeed, the initiative is now in a dead heat

Why have they been putting so much money into one state ballot? Because a labeling requirement in California would lead to labeling nationwide.

If you live in California, your vote for president won’t really be counted (other than towards matching funds for a third party) … but your vote for proposition 37 will count on a crucial issue for everyone’s health.

Note: Shopping at Whole Foods or other high-end "organic" stores does NOT guarantee that you'll avoid GMOs:

Pretty soon it will.  Try to keep the GMO laced pollen out of your open pollenated crop.  And after that, Monsanto owns your product.  Thousands of farmers have been sued by Monsanto because their open pollinated food became contaminated by GMO in the area.  They sue them for copy right infringement.

For hundreds of years it was agreed that patenting food stuff was unethical.  Good job Clarence!

I just don't like GMOs.

Here's the current deal in the US concerning "Organic"

If its made with carbon based molecules, it's "Organic"
Much of the shit labelled "Organic" has all the same sorts of objectionable crud in them as stuff that would be thought of as not "Organic"

"Organic" has no formal legal definition as to quality, purity, goodness, content or wholesomeness.

Just tellin' ya'll what is going on.... what the "Official" Legal and societal boundaries are at this time... and right now, "Organic" is in the eye of the beholder.

I'm just the messenger.

I want my stuff free of Monsanto (et al's) horrific laboratory based genetic mutations as much if not more than the next guy.  Man so far as I'm concerned has not yet reached a point in his intelligence , competency and humility that he might be entrusted fucking around in a laboratory with what should be left to Nature and Nature's God.

BTW, the same thing is true with respect to Genetically Modified.  Just about everything we eat has been Genetically Modified... For instance, if one were to take a white rose bush and splice into it a red shoot from another plant and thereafter a pink rose grew and bloomed, it has been "Genetically Modified" .... but not in a laboratory down at the cellular level.... which Mr. Knukles thinks is fucking with Mr Universe where man don't belong.

What is needed first is a working definition of Organic, Genetically Modified, etc.

See, the whole problem sourrounds morality.

Which reminds me of a joke...........

A priest, lawyer and a buncha little boys were on a flight when they heard the captain announce that they were going to crash and die.  Captain has the proverbial parachute for himself and just 2 more.  He hands the two extras to the priest and jumps.
The lawyer tries to grab one from the priest and the priest says "But what about the underage boys?"
To which the lawyer says "Fuck 'em"
And the Priest asks "Is there enough time?"

There's a huge difference between GM, hybridizing, and grafting!

Hybrid seeds are not necessarily GM.

Screwing around at the genetic level and introducing elements which help the plant produce its own PESTICIDE is absolutely devastating to the pollinizing insect colonies.

And the worst thing about GM is that the determinate nature of the seeds leads to MONOPOLY over time!

Sexual reproduction is a process that concludes with a genetic modification.

The flowering plants (angiosperms) have done quite well following this process over the millenia;using genitic modification to adapt to enviromental pressures.

Now that humans can genetically modify plants, we will.

I"m against GMOs but George and his syncophants are fucking whackjobs and children. IF you lived here and IF you read the Prop., you'd realize only certain foods will be labeled, exceptions to labeling are numerous, and WE WHO FUCKING LIVE HERE are going to be paying through the ass at the grocery store if this shit passes. FUCK YOU GEORGE!

Again, I will point out that since Hodgson Mills has begun labeling their flour products, the price has NOT gone up!  I use it daily, so I should know.

It may not be a perfect prop, but at least it is a start, and sends a loud message to the GM deathlords.

Besides, you will pay more in the longrun for health complications due to GM than you will in "food cost increases".  GM effects happen gradually and over time, so people cannot instantly see their danger.  And it seems to me that if Americans can't instantly see something, then they don't care.  Long term patience is not a virtue of most Americans.

Prop 37 will decide the fate of America.

Will we be obese diabetics willing to feed our children toxic sludge for Monopoly game pieces or will we feed our minds and bodies with real, nutrient-rich food helping us become a productive and prosperous nation once again?

You can still enjoy your yoga-mat-mcribs, but please people, let us who care about our health know what we're putting into our bodies!

I have no info on this, but it would seem, using common sense, that the dramatic rise in celiac disorder has something to do with GM.  The time periods definitely correlate.  Also, I learned that the kind of wheat grain we use is much different than was used 100 years ago.

Empirical data can be fairly easily had. Is there a mechanism of action explaining why food that has been genetically modified causes problems? Why should a carbohydrate that is presumably identical to one from natural food behave differently? I have seen this kind of extrapolation yield false results in the past on large issues.

Tue, 11/06/2012 - 01:27 | 2951014 Tijuana Donkey Show
Tijuana Donkey Show's picture

People cannot truely label nutrition right now, our curent labeling system lacks depth. They are not the same, or else people would respond the same. Obesity, diabeties, heart disease, why are they growing when we "understand" the modern diet? Why do people with Diabeties get worse on the AMA diet, or people not loose weight when they "count calories?" Because nutrition is not just a label, and you need to think that things eaten in pairs or groups have a different impact. Also, WTF could something that kills something else be good for you? These issues arise because people grow monocultures, and they lead to superbugs. 100+ miles of corn is not normal, nor are strawberries in January. Think seasonal, local, and mostly greens, and you'll be better off than ever before.

Tue, 11/06/2012 - 00:34 | 2950946 john39
john39's picture

One example, eating corn genetically modified to produce Bt toxin to kill bugs is also less than helpful to humans. As far as so called empirical data goes, if it come from monsanto, rest assured that it is 100% bs. The same scum that runs the central banking scam owns gmo producers like Monsanto. What else do you need to know? Eat all the frakenfood you want, but quit trying to hide the ingredients from people who actually give a shit.

Tue, 11/06/2012 - 05:36 | 2951151 Silva Plata
Silva Plata's picture

John39 is correct. It is common for BT toxin to mutate and setup shop in the intestines where it becomes a pesticide factory, destroying all the good gut bacteria.

Also, a lot of people who look "fat" are infact bloated from toxic overload. When the liver and kidneys can't get rid of the bt toxicity, the body is forced to store it in the tissue. So the body retains water to dilute the toxiciy.  You see a similar toxic bloating effect in heavy drinkers as they get older and their livers can't keep up.

even if there is a favorable outcome there is so much shit in the food supply now including the non-declared additives in base ingredients such as flour

and then the Organic scam where with few exceptions so called organic products  include Chinese sourced  ingredients where the only thing organic is the vomit and excrement from the slave laborers

100% agree.

...I'm just hoping this passes as a sign that the majority of people still want to try and make a positive difference. YES on Prop 37 will determine that.

And who knows, if we win this first battle then the fight against all of the other shit in our food can be our next point of contention.

Sorry. This article ost me at, "force"

The state of the food supply is the result of government force. Why would we ever expect more government force to solve the problem it created in the first place?

Tue, 11/06/2012 - 11:38 | 2951811 amusedobserver
amusedobserver's picture

"Force" is indeed the problem with this initiative, but not the way he thinks.  Prop 37 forces the retailer to be the one to verify the provenence of every one of the thousands of items it puts on the shelves.  Since when is the grocer supposed to be the food nazi enforcers?  And at what cost?

I'm a firm believer in accurate and honest food labeling and want GMO foods labeled as such.  But I believe that any idea that becomes law should be funded by the government and taxpayers, otherwise it's not worthy of being a law, and certainly not fair to the retailers who have to bear the costs of enforcing it.

By extension, I feel the same way about immigration law and putting business owners on the hook for hiring illegal aliens.  It's the government's job to keep them out;  it's the business's job to run a business.

Why, that's simple, Flocking old boy. Raise, cook and eat your own swans, as it were. As Wang said in Murder by Death, "Moose on wall collect!".

And as well intentioned GW is with this article, it still overlooks a lot of flaws in the bill itself, (though that is not the point I will take up now). Unless you just started reading ZH recently, then it should be fairly obvious that we, the collective "All of us", are screwed. The equities markets have become a manipulated farce, the American government is monetizing the debt in an ugly death spiral and worldwide manufacturing, the real source of wealth creation, is collapsing.

If you are not actively involved with the creation of the MAJORITY of the foods you need to live, you will, in the near future, be in a world of hurt. Seeing that most Americans, (and many others around the world), are not engaged in such activities bodes extremely poorly for them. This is a "calories per person per day" type of discussion. If this sounds apocalyptic, or paranoid or "overexcited", let me add this. If anything, what I'm telling you is a little too tepid for what the reality is going to look like. Imagine Far Rockaway, Queens, the victim of hurricane Sandy, without anyone coming to help them. What would that scenario break down into? Now envision Far Rockaway happening everywhere, all at once. If you aren't terrified, you're not paying attention.

Bear this in mind as well, while you're putting the pieces together. It really doesn't matter much who wins this election. The USA is and will be no better at ending the welfare nanny-state we are currently in than Greece, Italy or Spain has. De-leveraging is coming, and the destruction of wealth that will accompany it will be unimaginable. Prop 37 is an insignificant mote, an idle curiosity on the side of the road on the way to TEOTWAWKI. Want to know what's in your food? Grow it yourself. Solves the problem, doesn't it? But be sure to change your dollars out for PMs or farmland, own a firearm or two, and get to know your neighbors really, really well. Those folks, you're going to need them, (and they you). Saddle up, cowboys.
