Why Did CIA Director Petraeus Suddenly Resign … And Why Was the U.S. Ambassador to Libya Murdered?

George Washington's picture

The Deeper Questions Behind the Ambassador’s Murder … and the CIA Boss’ Sudden Resignation

While the GOP is attacking (and Dems defending) the Obama administration in connection with the murder of the U.S. ambassador to Libya, there is a deeper story.

Sure, it is stunning that the State Department never requested backup or that people such as Lieutenant Colonel Anthony Shaffer allege that President Obama personally watched in real time the attacks as they occurred via video feeds from drones flying over the Benghazi consulate.

But these claims only can be assessed – and the whole confusing mess only makes sense – if the deeper underlying story is first exposed.

Many Syrian Terrorists Come from Libya

The U.S. supported opposition which overthrew Libya’s Gadaffi was largely comprised of Al Qaeda terrorists.

According to a 2007 report by West Point’s Combating Terrorism Center’s center, the Libyan city of Benghazi was one of Al Qaeda’s main headquarters – and bases for sending Al Qaeda fighters into Iraq – prior to the overthrow of Gaddafi:
WestPoint 1 LibyaAQvsAS Why Did CIA Director Petraeus Suddenly Resign ... And Why Was the U.S. Ambassador to Libya Murdered?
Al Qaeda is now largely in control of Libya.  Indeed, Al Qaeda flags were flown over the Benghazi courthouse once Gaddafi was toppled.

(Incidentally, Gaddafi was on the verge of invading Benghazi in 2011, 4 years after the West Point report cited Benghazi as a hotbed of Al Qaeda terrorists. Gaddafi claimed – rightly it turns out – that Benghazi was an Al Qaeda stronghold and a main source of the Libyan rebellion.  But NATO planes stopped him, and protected Benghazi.)

CNN, the Telegraph,  the Washington Times, and many other mainstream sources confirm that Al Qaeda terrorists from Libya have since flooded into Syria to fight the Assad regime.

Mainstream sources also confirm that the Syrian opposition is largely comprised of Al Qaeda terrorists.  See this, this, this, this, this, this, this, this, this and this.

The U.S. has been arming the Syrian opposition since 2006. The post-Gaddafi Libyan government is also itself a top funder and arms supplier of the Syrian opposition.

The Real Story At Benghazi

This brings us to the murder of ambassador Stevens and the sudden resignation of CIA boss David Petraeus.

The Wall Street Journal, Telegraph and other sources confirm that the US consulate in Benghazi was mainly being used for a secret CIA operation.

They say that the State Department presence in Benghazi “provided diplomatic cover” for the previously hidden CIA mission.

Reuters notes that the CIA mission involved finding and repurchasing heavy weaponry looted from Libyan government arsenals.

Business Insider reports that Stevens may have been linked with Syrian terrorists:

There’s growing evidence that U.S. agents—particularly murdered ambassador Chris Stevens—were at least aware of heavy weapons moving from Libya to jihadist Syrian rebels.

In March 2011 Stevens became the official U.S. liaison to the al-Qaeda-linked Libyan opposition, working directly with Abdelhakim Belhadj of the Libyan Islamic Fighting Group—a group that has now disbanded, with some fighters reportedly participating in the attack that took Stevens’ life.

In November 2011 The Telegraph reported that Belhadj, acting as head of the Tripoli Military Council, “met with Free Syrian Army [FSA] leaders in Istanbul and on the border with Turkey” in an effort by the new Libyan government to provide money and weapons to the growing insurgency in Syria.

Last month The Times of London reported that a Libyan ship “carrying the largest consignment of weapons for Syria … has docked in Turkey.” The shipment reportedly weighed 400 tons and included SA-7 surface-to-air anti-craft missiles and rocket-propelled grenades.

***

Reuters reports that Syrian rebels have been using those heavy weapons to shoot down Syrian helicopters and fighter jets.

The ship’s captain was ”a Libyan from Benghazi and the head of an organization called the Libyan National Council for Relief and Support,” which was presumably established by the new government.

That means that Ambassador Stevens had only one person—Belhadj—between himself and the Benghazi man who brought heavy weapons to Syria.

Furthermore, we know that jihadists are the best fighters in the Syrian opposition, but where did they come from?

Last week The Telegraph reported that a FSA commander called them “Libyans” when he explained that the FSA doesn’t “want these extremist people here.”

And if the new Libyan government was sending seasoned Islamic fighters and 400 tons of heavy weapons to Syria through a port in southern Turkey—a deal brokered by Stevens’ primary Libyan contact during the Libyan revolution—then the governments of Turkey and the U.S. surely knew about it.

Furthermore there was a CIA post in Benghazi, located 1.2 miles from the U.S. consulate, used as “a base for, among other things, collecting information on the proliferation of weaponry looted from Libyan government arsenals, including surface-to-air missiles” … and that its security features “were more advanced than those at rented villa where Stevens died.”

And we know that the CIA has been funneling weapons to the rebels in southern Turkey. The question is whether the CIA has been involved in handing out the heavy weapons from Libya.

In other words, ambassador Stevens may have been a key player in deploying Libyan terrorists and arms to fight the Syrian government.

Other sources also claim that the U.S. consulate in Benghazi was mainly being used as a CIA operation to ship fighters and arms to Syria.

Many have speculated that – if normal security measures weren’t taken to protect the Benghazi consulate or to rescue ambassador Stevens – it was  because the CIA was trying to keep an extremely low profile to protect its cover of being a normal State Department operation.

Why Did CIA Chief David Petraeus Suddenly Resign?

CIA boss David Petraeus suddenly resigned, admitting to an affair.  This could be the real explanation, given that affairs of high-level intelligence chiefs could compromise national security.

But the timing of Petraeus’ resignation becomes more interesting once one learns that that he was scheduled to testify under oath next week before power House and Senate committees regarding the Benghazi consulate.

Many speculate that it wasn’t an affair – but the desire to avoid testifying on Benghazi – which was the real reason for Petraeus’ sudden resignation.

The Big Picture

Whatever the scope of the CIA’s operation in Benghazi – and whatever the real reason for the resignation of the CIA chief – the key is our historical and ongoing foreign policy.

For decades, the U.S. has backed terrorists for geopolitical ends.

The U.S. government has been consistently planning regime change in Syria and Libya for 20 years, and dreamed of regime change – using false flag terror – for 50 years.

Obama has simply re-packaged Bush and the Neocons’ “war on terror” as a series of humanitarian wars.

And the U.S. and its allies will do anything to topple Iran … and is systematically attempting to pull the legs out from Iran’s allies as a way to isolate and weaken that country.

Americans should ask ourselves if that’s what we want …

it is laughing out loud stupid to think that petraeus resigned over an affair.....if he indeed had an affair, every tom dick and harry in washington and intelligence circles knew about it and it was certainly not blackmail material...the affair was a pretext....but pretext for what?

obama fired petraeus plain and simple but he allowed him to resign for various reasons. and the main reason was to stifle his testimony before congress.....and why did obama want petraeus silenced? speculation goes in many directions but most likely there were two reasons - as is ALWAYS the case with cia operations.

the first was to protect the cia / al qaeda alliance. the second was to help romney. unfortunately the latter failed miserably....the cia and obama watched as the 4 americans were murdered and they would have been furious if they had not been killed....stevens was killed for a very specific reason - he was not an innocent bystander.....the attack on the consulate was another cia operation - without doubt or equivocation....

when you see al qaeda - you are seeing the cia in action - al qaeda is the dirty tricks division of the cia....

it is of a truth that obama is simply george bush's 3d and 4th term.....the fucks who voted for him will wail many tears as the years roll on....in fact, it is without doubt that the electronic voting is so rigged that the rockefeller axis of evil and bush crime sydicate dons can vote in or out anyone they want.....

i don't fully understand benghazi but i know who did it - i just don't fully understand why.

tony b the man.

we will never know "fully" why, but there are multiple levels of coverup, going all the way back to the kid who self-immolated (recall if you can, veet-nam and the monk who did same, if not look it up, 'cuz the same playbook is in effect).  So let's do a Saul-seminar this fine night.  Let's divide the country through:

  • Hatred vs. Israel
  • Hatred vs. Jews
  • Hatred vs. the 99% (but Granny Warren won her bid)
  • Hatred vs. despots who have been nominally, forced, eventually to be on "our" side.
  • Hatred vs. the haves and have-some-want-more. (thanks Saul)
  • Hatred vs. the Patriots (although the Bills are nolo contendre tomorrow ;-O )
  • etc.

All of which lead to Hillary having a member of the Muslim Sisterhood (with Weiner as her beard) as her primary aide.  And a policy that supports establishment of the Caliphate.

The "Long War" is in full tilt.  We're in the bar chatting up the cuties.  There are coaches who are on the ceiling about getting on the field, but the Owners box is having a beer summit.

So Benghazi is a staging ground (benign local situation).  Food, water, shelter good.  local security OK, methods of pushing towards the battlefield OK, able to handle training and returning troops for whatever reason, OK)

Even Gaddafi couldn't handle Benghazi.

nmewn has said separately that the Ambassador was well liked.  I've heard that too.  But, well liked by who?  All factions? Nyet, tovarich. Probably the tangoz who aced him didn't like him. just my humble opinion.

I'm thinking that he did his part, as a good spook he had all kinds of connections in his head, therefore he had to be aced to prevent disclosure.  His "aide" the gamer, we'd be wonderin' what he left hidden in the modern version of "Moscow Rules".

Blessings on the two Seals who did their duty to AMCITS vs. obeying the broke-dick directives of their CIA "bosses".  Went out to play, played.  Paid the price.

*** now to comment on your question

Who did it?  All kinds of people who perpetrated a) stupid internet video myth, but b) "Muslim Spring" [aka "Arab Spring", but that myth is blown] and c) the people in the chain of the USA Egyptian Embassy "apology" ]

OK, I'm just a  tiny little piglet in this ongoing situation.  But I've been looking at the fully serious background documents regarding the whole situation.  Like back into the early 1900's, why did Hitler have any traction in the ME, "Seven Pillars of Wisdom" 'cuz Lawrence fit into the culture (and that is worthy of full understanding) (especially for the political side because his first hand-written draft was lost, then he came back)

I would hope that we could continue to figure this out from our various points of view.

Even GW can add value, I continue to have faith in the lad ;-)

GW- that is serious, you dig as well as anyine, just sometimes you avoid certain things at certain times.

I would also like to point out one Valerie Jarrett (the one who no one speaks of) and her "values". But that would be, as they say, somehow, impolitic.

So, lets all carry on without discussing Obama's brain in foreign policy...which is...Jarrett.

Alright. I'll explain the situation. Col. K had to go because, like Saddaam before him, he dropped the petrodollar and demanded gold for oil. ZOG cannot allow this, lest our entire debt-Ponzi, dollar-drowned economy collapse. The only forces available to  X Col. K were local tribes, the Brothas, and Al Q.  Obama/Stevens, with a little help from NATO airstrikes, got the dirty job done. Next ZOGtarget:  Shia-ruled Syria. Why? Syria sells little oil, but is oil-rich Iran's #1 Shia ally AND the major transit corridor for Iranian weapons shipments to (Shia) Hezbollah in south Lebanon. And Iran has also gone off the petrodollar. So knocking over Assad directly benefits Israel, and will lead in to the ultimate Zion/petrodollar target: Iran. Once again, tho, the only available local forces (Obama prefers locals to Bush's direct US invasions) are the (majority) Sunni Brothas and Al Q. Weapons? Stevens took care of that too and, that done and the Syrian Civil War well underway, became both dispensable and the Man Who Knew too Much. Goodbye, Stevens. #2 Man who Knows too Much: Petraeus at CIA. As I said above, he's out of the loop now...if he talks he dies, if he keeps quiet he gets rich. As to the "Caliphate", a favorite neo-con red herring, it was never further from realization: thanks to Bush/Obama's interventions, Sunni ragheads and Shia ragheads are now slaughtering each other all over the Middle East.

I have no proof for what I'm about to say but I suspect it was Petraeus who was leaking Benghazi intel to the press.

There was just too much information coming out (almost immediately and confirmed later to be true) which is why I say it.

They (the embassy) had asked for better security and been turned down. They were being photographed from the building across the street the day of the attack. They did have Ansar al Sharia offshoot members as security guards. We were the last western embassy in Benghazi and yes it was being used as a post for the CIA.

All of this information and more forced the administration to show their hand very early in all this...it was not a stupid YouTube video. It couldn't come from Hillary as it called attention to her own departments incompetence in not increasing security in the first place...it had to come from somewhere else...and a ton of it.

I think it was Petraeus (or a subordinate) and when he discovered the FBI knew about his affair he cashed in his chips and pushed himself away from the table. A sort of modern day Deep Throat but at least we know more than the MSM has been wiling to dole out about it.

On a human note...Sean Smith, one the victims, aka Vile Rat...

"We were the last western embassy in Benghazi"

The US Embassy in Libya was/is in Tripoli per Condi Rice. See my post with the quote from their website above.

edit...Here it is:

It's in Tripoli...

On May 31, 2006 the United States of America and Libya exchanged diplomatic notes confirming the upgrade of the U.S. Liaison Office in Tripoli to a U.S. Embassy.  This exchange of notes follows upon Secretary Rice's announcement and report to Congress on May 15 of her intent to upgrade our level of diplomatic representation with Libya. The United States withdrew its last U.S. Ambassador to Libya in 1972. All remaining U.S. government personnel were withdrawn and the embassy was shut down after a mob attacked and set fire to the U.S. Embassy on December 2, 1979. Resumption of a direct diplomatic presence occurred on February 8, 2004 with the arrival of U.S. personnel at the U.S. Interests Section in Tripoli. That mission was upgraded to a Liaison Office on June 24, 2004.

Yes, yes, consulate/embassy, semantics makes no difference to the event in question.

Stevens was the US ambassador simply because the US government pronounced he was. And he's now very much dead along with three other Americans.

Semantics aside, the point is the U.S. consulate/embassy(or what the fuck ever) in Libya was and is in Tripoli not Benghazi.

Makes the whole story suspect. I'd say "the compound" in Benghazi was all C.I.A. all the time.

I now see the term "U.S. mission in Benghazi" is being used after the fact in some "news" articles.*

Ok, so define US mission in Benghazi...Is that like the mission at the Alamo? WTF!

* Example here:

After being bombarded with requests from congressional committees for documents about the attack on the U.S. mission in Benghazi, the State Department said Friday it has handed over a number of documents to Congress for review.

What they (the Obama administration) have described as their ambassador and three other Americans are now dead. They claimed (at first) it was a demonstration over a YouTube video gone out of control, which was laughable on its face.

As we all know, Ansar al Sharia is well known for their colorful & poignant protest signs right? ;-)

A "consulate" for the US can be as simple as a one room office in an old building manned by a US  national part time. At least the one I visited was. I don't know if it gets as low key as some countries, where a citizen is given the title of "consul" and his home is the "consulate" for a part time type salary or just for the honor of the title. I think getting caught up in the "name" of it is a waste of time. It was a place the US was conducting operations from, including the DoS and the CIA.

Read Michael Scheuer's Marching Toward Hell, in which he describes how the CIA told Pres. Clinton's NSA guy (Sandy Berger IIRC) they had OBL in their sites (pre-9/11): "Can we kill him now?"

Berger: "We'll get back to you." (not)

Also, multiple times the CIA received reliable on-the-ground intel that a major AQ player (probably, now we know, CIA) was on the ground in a particular building.  Clinton's people tell the CIA to wait (till their AQ/CIA operative leaves, apparently) then Clinton's guy says to blow up the building hours later at 2am with an innocent Muslim cleaning crew in it.  Nice, eh?

Virtually ex-President Bill Clinton's exact words on TV, in justifying (lying) why he did not kill OBL prior to 9/11.

After Bill's words, Michael Scheuer (ex-head of CIA's OBL search unit) was visibly shaking, his voice quavering with anger, telling us we just witnessed the lying words of a compulsive, convicted liar.

Mike was in the CIA room when they sited OBL on the ground, and waited unsuccesfully for Pres. Clinton's office to give the green lite to kill OBL.

If it was legal, M. Scheuer would take only the greatest pride in the world to tie the noose to hang Bill Clinton.

Starlight scopes and other NVG are huge visual light amplification (like 30,000x) devices.  IR tracks heat but sucks at any precision, used to have IR illumination (like Korean war vintage) but if you are in effect holding up a floodlight and getting the first four shots, then the fifth guy says "hmm, those other guys were standing around in the dark and got a perfect head shot."  Basically all energy signatures on the battlefield get recognized; eventually the significant ones become, well, significant to the other side as well.

Almost the funniest story of the civil war, no ... er ... War of NORTHERN AGRESSION (whew!) was at Spotsylvania Court House, where Segwick (God rest his soul) sitting on his horse, looking over the field, his aides trying to get him under cover, says about snipers: "Why, they couldn't hit an elephant at this dist..."

"Many speculate that it wasn’t an affair – but the desire to avoid testifying on Benghazi – which was the real reason for Petraeus’ sudden resignation."

How does Patreus "avoid" testifying to the House/Senate committees. Surely he can be compelled to testify even although he has resigned. Anybody know the answer.

Correct me (kindly, please): Congress gives immunity re. every question they ask and any info that directly ensues, then if he refuses to testify he rots in prison till he does testify.

No?

Conditional or blanket immunity can be granted...but not required, in order to compel someone to testify.

He became the CIA Director around a month before the Libyan civil war ended so I don't see where he would need it...that is, he assumed his position long after whatever foreign policy decisions regarding Libya had already been made by others. The weapons were already in there and OUR Air Force was acting as the defacto rebel air force pounding on Gaddafi when he came in.

The one who REALLY needs it is none other than Leon Panetta...his predecessor at the CIA.

Well, see, he's really depressed and decides to take a walk in Ft. Marcy Park.

That'll do the trick

How come the Big O gets all the best reality TV channels and the rest of us have to put up with the network crap?

I wonder how it feels to be the star of a snuff film, knowing the President is watching your ultimate performance.
