Do You Know What Inflation Means?

CrownThomas's picture

As told by a woman who lived through the Weimar Republic era...

"A few skepticals however, thought it safer to fill up shelves and drawers. Soon everybody wanted to be safe for months ahead, and the people began rushing to the stores. This buying of course raised the prices, and the scarcer goods became, the more feverish people bought"

One thing that's funny is that at 8:12 the image of a store that is advertising

Beurre, Fromage and Oeufs is likely in Post War France. Perhaps its Alsace which ended up being in France post Treaty of Versailles.

Other storefronts however were in German.

I thought deflation was what could not happen here.

Glenn Beck is wrong. This seizing of the military ship is great news. Can we just give our Navy away and cancel our trillions in debt. Come on u know Bill Gross and El Erian would like to have a corporate battleship. How about a corporate F22?

Rearranging Deckchairs's picture

Also food rationing is a great idea. I mean a quick look at the average american wasteline will tell you we actually need it. I guess Bloombug is just ahead of the curve with his prohibition on soda's ( that's pop for some of u) sizes.

When Americans are pushing wheelbarrows of dollars, the chairman will claim inflation is at 5% and is transitory!

Glenn Beck video on ZH? WTF? I stopped watching (only started watching, against my better judgement, due to my faith in ZH) when he asked would Russia or China seize US assets in leiu of repayment. Yeah, sure........after the nuclear dust settles maybe. Beck is an absolute sensationalist moron and has no place here, or anywhere for that matter. ZH, which I respect greatly, just hit a historic low. Very sad.

Just one correction:

They burned the money because people need to stay warm and it was cheaper than buying firewood with it.

Mo' money, mo' money, mo' money! (?)

I love how the NeoKeyesians I follow on twitter scoffed at the CPI report today, "QE3 and Hyperinflation....CPI prices only jumped 0.1% LOLOLOLOLOLOL"

But if they looked closer, they'd see that food is up, along with rent/shelter, which jumped 0.03%.  That may not seem like much now, but if that path continues, it means rents will be on pace to go up by 2-3% YOD.  That is NOT good.......especially since wages won't keep up with that increase.

When people can't afford shelter, then they start not being able to afford food.  That's when windows get broken.

Windows getting broken is good in the parlance of the twitterati you follow.

Sorry, Glenn, Russia and China will not be taking collateral for their bonds, they will be paid back in freshly printed Bennie bux.

And what if they want to be paid in gold?  Lol.

It means when my obama bumper sticker neighbor comes a knockin' on the door for a hand out I lets out a belch and close the door -- economic stupidity is a beach

madcows's picture

ha, I read that too fast and thought it said "OBama Humper".  You must live next to Chris Matthews.

Pseudolus's picture

A result of mass economic illiteracy, so couldn't happen like that again post-Keynes

And we shouldn't take the female perspective as their inflation expectations are usually (irrationally) high, especially among the lower classes.

This kind of 'price inflation' is a kind of monetary hysteria

madcows's picture

Every high school should require an economic literacy class that deals with balancing budgets, how credit works, balanching your check book, etc...

Forget the requirements for home ec. and gym and how to deal with bullies.

optimator's picture

I think that does get a mention, in mandatory Holocaust Studies.

"how credit works"

Accordingly the bernanke, there is no cost for capital creation.  FYI, he is the fucking bully, and he is losing control.

Pseudolus's picture

Totally agree

Its no accident such things aren't on the mandatory curriculum

The initial starvation of Germany in the 1018-1919 winter was because of a British blockade that stayed in place even thought the war had ended.  About a millions German civilians starved that winter.

Glenn Beck is a huge waste of natural resources. Period.

MickV's picture

Inflation means Increase in the money supply. The rise in prices is the RESULT of inflation.

madcows's picture

There's more than one kind of inflation.  CTRL P is only one kind.  Dollar devaluation b/c noone wants your money any more is another.  The FX markets are in a tug of war.  They can't figure out whose money they want less, ours or Europe's.

ZeroPoint's picture

Glenn isn't talking out his ass this time. It's refreshing.

Toolshed's picture

The only time Glenn Beck isn't talking out of his ass is when he isn't talking.

Could never happen in an "advanced (centrally managed) economy" like the USA.

I just hope, when China and Russia seize our military assets as debt collateral, that they have the good sense to seize some congress critters as well - and put them to work straightaway in some of their remotest slave labor camps.

Expect the (imaginary) debt to climb up into the quintillions mid 2013 causing gasoline to $100 per gallon. They'll blame it on mid east war (they'll start that soon)
