The REAL Reason for the Assault In Gaza?

George Washington's picture

We noted yesterday that many speculate that the timing of the war in Gaza is because it is (1) after the U.S. elections and before the Israeli elections or (2) part of the run-up to a war with Iran.

A third reason is also quite possible.

Asia News reported last month:

The debate on U.N. recognition of Palestine will be held in mid-November. This was announced two days ago by Vuk Jeremic, President of the U.N. General Assembly. “The leaders of the Palestinian National Authority (PNA) are going to engage in extensive discussions”, said Jeremic, “coming to a conclusion as to what they want to do some time in November.”

On November 6th – before hostilities escalated in Gaza – Anti War pointed out:

Palestine’s upgrade to UN “non-member observer state” status is virtually a foregone conclusion, with an overwhelming majority of the UN General Assembly expected to vote in favor and only a handful, led by the US and Israel, in opposition.

The question then is what Israel’s reaction will be, and the nation’s cabinet met today to discuss possible “punitive” measures to punish the Palestinians for getting the enhanced level of recognition on the international stage.

Exactly what the move will be remains unclear, and with Israel already not negotiating with the Palestinians and already expanding settlements, the number of options that will actually feel like “punishment” instead of just business as usual is limited.

On November 8th, the Washington Post reported:

The Palestinians took the first step toward raising their status at the United Nations from an observer to a nonmember observer state Thursday by circulating a draft resolution to the 193 U.N. member states and asking for their support.

***

There are no vetoes in the General Assembly and the resolution is almost certain to be approved by the world body which is dominated by countries sympathetic to the Palestinian cause. Approval of the resolution would elevate the Palestinians to the same status as the Vatican. The draft resolution states that to date, 132 nations have recognized “the State of Palestine.”

***

The upgraded status would add weight to Palestinian claims for a state in the West Bank, Gaza Strip and east Jerusalem, territories captured by Israel in the 1967 Mideast war. Israel pulled out of Gaza in 2005.

The Palestinians also hope to use their upgraded status to join additional U.N. bodies, such as the International Criminal Court, where they could attempt to prosecute Israel.

At the same time, they have expressed fear of financial and diplomatic retaliation.

Following last year’s move by the Palestinians to join the U.N. cultural agency UNESCO, the United States withheld funds from the organization, which amount to 22 percent of its budget. The U.S. also withheld money to the Palestinians, and the U.S. Congress has threatened similar sanctions if the Palestinians proceed to improve their status at the U.N. again.

Israel also retaliated by accelerating settlement construction and withholding funds from the Palestinian government.

***

The draft resolution expresses hope that the Security Council will consider the application for full membership favorably.

It “reaffirms the right of the Palestinian people to self-determination and to independence in their State of Palestine on the basis of the pre-1967 borders.”

And Reuters noted yesterday:

Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas accused Israel on Friday of launching an assault on the Gaza Strip to undermine his efforts to secure a diplomatic upgrade at the United Nations.

***

Abbas [said] he thought the escalating military campaign was aimed at sinking his own diplomatic maneuverings.

***

Everything that is happening is in order to block our endeavors to reach the United Nations,” Abbas told journalists.

***

Abbas [is] recognized by the West as the legitimate leader of the Palestinians in the Gaza Strip ….

Despite the violence, he said he would push ahead with plans for a vote at the U.N. General Assembly before the end of the month to give the Palestinians the rank of an “observer state” within the world body rather than the present “observer entity”.

The upgrade would enhance Palestinians’ legal rights at a time when peace negotiations with Israel have hit a wall over Israel’s refusal to halt settlement building in territory where the Palestinians want their state.

We are going to the United Nations to vote on the resolution of our becoming an observer state on the 29th of this month. Nothing will deter us,” Abbas said.

Both Israel and the United States have condemned the planned vote, which Abbas looks set to win, saying it violated the 1993 Oslo accords, which were intended to pave the way to a “final status agreement” within five years.

Israel's number one objective has always been to destabilize the middle east and weaken the arab (muslim) unity, a unified nation as was promised to them by the allies after they helped defeat the Ottomans in WW1. Of course the Balfour declaration had already been drafted and sealed in honor of Lord Rothschild therefore the entire unified land promise, otherwise known as Sham in Arabic, was the first of many western betrayals to the Arabs.

Little was known about the value of crude oil at the time but borders were carved around massive deposits creating geologically significant regions such as Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, Trans  Jordan etc. Ironically, it's the wealth beneath the sand that weakened the arab hand against it's oppressors in the west for it placed the people under a militarily rich totalitarian regime loyal to it's customers. It's no coincidence that our friends in the mideast are sons of bitches to their own people whereas the secular nations like Syria, Iran and the former Iraq are regarded enemies which takes us back to Israel's main objective, the destabilization of Syria and Iran.

Ozzi,

Nobody stands in the way of the Arabs to unite (as it was promised).

Albeit, it seems as Arabs are hell bent on killing each other (see Syria, Iraq, Leabanon).

One cannot blame Israel for Arabs killing 100,000s of Arabs. Think Syria (60,000+), Iraq(100,000+), Leabanon (10,000s).

Nor can one blame Israel Muslims for killing Muslims. Think Iraq-Iran war (1,000,000), Iraq-Kurds, Turks-Kurds.

Israel is actually a stabilizing factor in the MidEast.

Its presence is used (cynically, but effectively) by Arab despots to draw their citizenry attention from their real problems.

GW, you lost credibility because you are so quick to criticize Israel, while closing a eye on the simple fact the Gaza has been firing at Israel on a regular basis for years.

How comes, GW, you raise your voice only when Israel fires back?

Being anti-war means that you care about any act of war, regardless what party.

Would you be still anti-war if missiles would hit your home town, George?

I just wonder how many missiles would you tolerate before you would beg your country to retaliate.

“Everything that is happening is in order to block our endeavors to reach the United Nations,” Washington told journalists.

Washington [is] recognized by the continental Europe as the legitimate leader of the Americans in North America.

Despite the violence, he said he would push ahead with plans for a vote at the U.N. General Assembly before the end of the month to give the Americans the rank of an “observer state” within the world body rather than the present “observer entity”.

The upgrade would enhance Americans’ legal rights at a time when peace negotiations with Kingdom of Great Britain have hit a wall over England’s refusal to halt settlement building in territory where the Americans want their state.

“We are going to the United Nations to vote on the resolution of our becoming an observer state on the 29th of this month. Nothing will deter us,” Washington said.

Or for that matter, how did "the Moslem" get so much land in the heart of the ancient Christian world? Mass foreclosures?

There aren't too many nations outside of China, India and the continent of Africa that are occupied by aboriginals. The Franks came TO France. Germans came from outside Germany and much of the English are Norse. Even the Japanese displaced an earlier people. That's just the way of the world.

History says get out of the way and let one side attain victory and subjugate the other. We believe, apparently, that if we can put a man on the moon we can certainly get feuding peoples to co-exist at the point of a printing press.

I think there's more to it than this--Abbas lapdogging it before the UN is one reason, I agree.  But not the only one.  This is Netanyahoo's cabal in desperation mode--at the elections, past and present; at the recent purge of neocon military officers in the region; at the increasing possiblity of imperialist defeat in Syria.

Many reasons coincide, so Apartheid Israel kills a Hamas operative amidst peace negotiations in public view.  Hamas has to respond, lest they appear impotent.  The peace accord is broken, Uncle Sam and Iran don't talk, and Hamas remains in place to helpfully throttle the Palestinian Resistance to Zionist occupation.

This is not to say that Hamas is purely a Mossad organ.  Only that elements of it act in such a manner.

so the arab governments were neutral in ww2.  that's why the borders were not changed after ww2, unlike after ww1.  israel in 1948 did change the map some and in '67 some more.

Great example, Nimrod!

"Case of Achille Lauro
Here is an example of a case of Zionist false flag terrorism. False Flag terrorism means that the terrorists believe that they are following orders "to help the cause" without realizing that their leadership has long since been taken over by their enemy and it is (s)he who is calling the shots, and they are all against the goals of "the cause".

A successful false flag terrorist attack that discredited the cause of the terrorists is the case of the Palestinian hijacking of the Italian cruse ship, "Achille Lauro" in 1985. This operation was ordered by the Israeli secret service and organized by their Palestinian agents inside Palestinian terrorist organizations. The details of the preparations are related by an insider to the upper echelons of the Israeli secret services, Ari Ben-Menashe, former special intelligence advisor to Israeli Prime Minister Yitzhak Shamir -in his book, "Profits of War."

"Radi [a Jordanian military officer who was unaware that he, since some time had already been smuggling arms for the Israeli secret service] went back to his drinking and womanizing and the money he made selling arms for Pearson all drained away. At that very vulnerable point, in 1978, Pearson stepped in again and offered Radi a £200,000 loan. This time, Pearson made it quite clear to him that the money was coming from an Israeli source. The desperate Radi accepted the loan and was recruited to work for an antiterrorist group in Israel run by Rafi Eitan. The group's methods were rather unconventional, one could say heinous, but it had operated successfully for years. An example is the case of the "Palestinian" attack on the cruise ship Achille Lauro in 1985. That was in fact, an Israeli "black" propaganda operation to show what a deadly, cutthroat bunch the Palestinians were. The operation worked like this: Eitan passed instructions to Radi that it was time for the Palestinians to make an attack and do something cruel, though no specifics were laid out. Radi passed orders on to Abu'l Abbas, who, to follow such orders, was receiving millions from Israeli intelligence officers posing as Sicilian dons. Abbas then gathered a team to attack the cruise ship. The team was told to make it bad, to show the world what lay in store for other unsuspecting citizens if Palestinian demands were not met. As the world knows, the group picked on an elderly American Jewish man [Leon Klinghoffer] in a wheelchair, killed him, and threw his body overboard. They made their point. But for Israel it was the best kind of anti-Palestinian propaganda."

Interesting in this account is that in order to "show what a deadly, cutthroat bunch the Palestinians were" Israelis activated their agents among Palestinian terrorists to tell them to be particularly brutal to Jews, as Jews. What Ben-Menashe does not mention in this anecdote is the second objective sought by Israel: convince Jews of the merits of Zionism and Israel as their sole "protector" on the planet.

Ben-Menashe mentions the "success" that Eitan's methods were having. A major aspect lending to this success is Israel's credibility. One would not suspect that particularly the Israeli government would be so cold-blooded toward Jews. Have them murdered to be able to point at their adversaries and cry "anti-Semitism". They feign indignation at the fate of Jews, who refuse to come live in Israel, where they are "protected."

The international crisis created by the hijacking was designed to capture headlines of the world's press for about a week. The hijackers finally agreed to surrender to Egyptian authorities. (Abu Abbas, who himself was not among the hijackers, helped negotiate their surrender.) The German Sueddeutsche Zeitung, recently furnished additional information of what happened:

"The Egyptians wanted to send Abbas and the hijackers to the PLO headquarters in Tunis. The plane was intercepted in flight by US fighters and forced to land in Sicily, where the hijackers were put on trial.

The prosecution indicted the actual hijackers but Abu Abbas was called merely as a "witness" and permitted to flee the country. The US had made a demand for Abbas' extradition for murder of a US citizen. An Italian court convicted Abbas in absentia to five life terms. The US withdrew its extradition demand. And Abbas remained free.

In 1998 Abu Abbas was given official permission of the Prime Minister Benjamin Netanjahu to visit the Gaza Strip. Israeli authorities justified the official permission with the fact that Abbas had in 1996 already been allowed to visit the Gaza Strip to participate in Palestinian parliamentary elections. He had also voted at that time for the resolution legally eliminating the clause from the PLO Charter calling for the destruction of Israel. Israeli Supreme Court also protected Abbas by refusing the law suit calling for Abbas' expulsion from Israel and being turned over to the US brought by the Klinghoffer family."

The leader who had planned and organized the hijacking was sitting in safety and on the enemy payroll. Those who carried out the action believed they were "helping the cause". They had no idea that the murder of an innocent, invalid reduced their "cause" in the public's eye from a struggle against occupation and ethnic cleansing to one against Jews per se, from a struggle for justice for the Palestinians to an unjust "anti-Jewish" struggle. It would take the Palestinian struggle a long time to overcome this setback.

The background of the Achille Lauro hijacking and the international immunity enjoyed by Abu Abbas provides useful insight into the workings of false flag terrorism. A close look at many of the "suicide bombings" taking place in Israel, would also raise doubts about many official versions of the attacks."
