Truthfully, she did not leave EBay very well positioned did she? Skype was executed on her watch as well.
And the campaign was just a typical farce.
If I recall correctly, EBay bought Skype, but failed to include key patents in the deal. That gave the founders of Skype, who owned the patents, huge leverage when it came time for EBay to sell to Microsoft.
If I recall correct she was a survivor at eBay and rose to the top after the real inovators at eBay were forced out. I have no love for Meg, but Anontomy was not her fault. That was Leo's fault.
Shortly before Leo's departure, Leo wanted HP to dump its hardware business and stick just with software. HP software sucks worse than their hardware! HP buys a software company and does absolutely nothing with it. Then when revenue plunges because it become obsolete or incompatible with newer OS\hardware they go any buy another company in the same market so they can refresh their software!
HP has also been outsourcing most if its support (call centers, support enginneers) to Costa Rica, India and China, which no of them can speak english.
I'm one of those people who thinks directors should do something besides rubber stamping management.

I don't know if you are serious or not, but HPQ picked up this rocket like trajectory (after the fuel is gone anyway) well before Meg showed up. This whole Autonomy thing was before her watch and looks more like a scam than anything else. If Banzai wants to crack HPQ jokes about their idiotic CEOs, Meg should be well down the list. A google search for Hewlett Packard ex-ceo will keep you busy for awhile.
Right, she was on the Board though which is a license for brain dead idiocy isn't it. She's on the board that approves the deal. She's supposed to be a tech expert. That's why they appointed her CEO yes? Did she ask any questions? Like for example, did anyone call the customers to kick the tires or what is this IDOL platform, smoke and mirrors?
This is what runs a surprisingly large swath of corporate America. Overpaid big ticket morons.

How it was accounted for is one thing. The technical issues are quite separate. Specifically how could they not see that the software did not do what is was hyped to do. Answer: acquisition myopia.
Fair enough--I hope I didn't come across as a Meg Whitman fan, I just don't like to see HPQ go down without Mark Hurd, Carly Fiorina and Leo Apothekar getting a mention. It's like watching the Ben Bernanke take all the heat while Alan Greenspan soaks in his bubble bath in peace all day.

She nearly ran Ebay into the ditch. After initial success which was mostly because of very good software, she alienated users by constantly increasing the fees. That's all she was able to do - no vision, just milk her customers. Ebay had to get rid of her in a hurry. She has no vision and no CEO ability whatsoever.
