Arm Teachers To Save Our Children, Now

This article originally appeared on the Daily Capitalist.

I am sure that all of you are as shocked and saddened as I am by the mass murders of little children and their teachers at Sandy Hook Elementary School. It is very difficult to read about this tragedy and the precious young lives that were lost. It is one of those events that stops the whole nation and causes them to mourn the dead yet appreciate the beauty and fragility of life at the same instant.

It is difficult to accept that this is the reality of America. Mass murders are becoming a way of our life. Seemingly one event inspires others to commit further brutal acts. We think that violence on this scale is something that happens elsewhere, yet it happens here with regularity.

We need to protect our children.

Already there are calls for gun control, more intervention with the mentally ill, and greater safety at our schools.

Gun control or gun prohibition will not happen in America. Guns are too prevalent and there is the Second Amendment right to bear arms. (You can argue against the purpose of the Second Amendment, but the Courts have upheld citizens' right to own guns: accept this fact.) Americans won't stand for prohibition anyway. It's a part of our national fabric. And we all know, despite the trite saying, and despite bans on firearms (see New York City), criminals will get guns. It is impossible to keep guns out of the hands of someone who wants one. Thus, bans on assault rifles, for example, won't put a dent in the problem (the shooter at Sandy Hook also has two handguns. Accept the fact that there are guns out there and they are here to stay.

Intervention with mentally disturbed people is an even more difficult task. Would Americans allow a law that permits the detention and treatment of people who haven't committed crimes? There are too many stories of Soviet and Chinese tyrants using such a law to arrest enemies of the state. I was listening to a criminologist who has studied the common factors that these disturbed mass killers have and he said it's easy to add up the symptoms after the fact, but there could be a million people who have similar symptoms who don't go on killing sprees. Accept the fact that functional but mentally disturbed people will get guns and we have no power to stop them. I am not advocating that dangerous maniacs have guns; I am simply pointing out the reality of the situation.

School safety? The killer in the Sandy Hook event broke the door open to get in. It was admirable to hear how the teachers handled this crisis. They were scared but calm and did everything right, carrying out well rehearsed safety plans. Yet 2o children and 6 adults were killed. Would a guard at the door have prevented this? Is one guard enough? My thinking is that this guy would have shot the guard at the beginning of his spree. Forget about metal detectors; he wasn't asking to be let in. And what about safety in other public places, such as the Clackamas shopping center in Oregon, or the movie theater in Aurora, Colorado, or a large campus like Virginia Tech. Can you have enough guards? Is total protection feasible much less affordable?

There is no easy answer to this problem. But I suggest two things.

1. All schools should have a video monitoring system with a designated person on campus to monitor it. Can all schools afford this? To protect our children, I would pay whatever it cost for my district. I know that some schools already have such a system installed. But do they have a designated monitor? With well placed video monitors at least staff would have an idea what was happening in such an event and could respond better. The principal of Sandy Hook, Dawn Hochsprun, and the school psychologist, Mary Joy Sherlach, bravely ran toward the shooter when they heard shots and sadly they were killed. Perhaps a control center and a defensive plan would have helped save their lives.

2. Arm some teachers and staff members so they can protect themselves and our children. I know this will get a big reaction from those against firearms, but think it through in light of the reality of the issues that I have outlined. It is not possible to prevent these tragic shootings before they happen, so sh0uld we leave our children unprotected while some maniac walks around and shoots them at will?

I am not talking about handing out pistols at random. Teachers and staff members must volunteer to be in such a program. They must be trained extensively in the use of handguns and be given instructions on how to handle panic situations. This type of training is given to police officers. Police departments could give such instruction and certify that those who pass the course are capable of defending themselves and our children. Annual certification should be required. Weapons should be kept in a gun safe in classrooms with the key in the teacher's physical possession. Supervisory staff would keep them in their offices and some would carry them at all times. Skeptics will say that poor little Miss Smith is not capable of such responsibility, but I disagree after hearing interviews of the brave teachers who protected their students at Sandy Hook: they were willing to risk their lives to save their children. Some gave their lives in doing so.

So what would happen in such an event where teachers and staff are armed? If they act according to their training they will kill or subdue the gunman. They could also be killed or injured, but is their slaughter and the slaughter of children more preferable? I am not suggesting that teachers go Rambo, but with proper training they should act according to a defensive plan that will protect their students. They should fire their weapon as a last resort. If they act with a calm head they will save lives. I am not saying this is a panacea for such a complex problem, but until someone figures out something better we need to protect our children, now.

NB. I am not a member of the NRA. I am not a gun enthusiast. I don't hunt or spend my spare time cleaning my arsenal.

Why...because they don't live under some illusion that there really are maniacs that desire to kill their children?

What did the men with guns do?

Arming teachers is not the answer.

DosZap's picture

What did the men with guns do?

Showed up AFTER the fact, like they ALWAYS do you idiot.

WHY is such as simple solution never taken, or grasped?

It is beyond reason, or stupidity.

"Arming teachers is not the answer."

Paper laws don't help.  Physical firepower does.  Schools, churches and post offices are gun-free zones.  Courts?

What about courts you fucking inept clueless dickweed moron?

Metal detectors, cops, armed cops, armed judges and many attornies packing heat.  All these pussies send their kids to gun free zones.

Fucking hypocrates.  And morons like you say make guns illegal.

Well guess what you fucking retard, you mentally addles piece of shit, it was illegal to carry a gun on that schools proterty.  Lot of fucking good that did.

Soon you'll be able to print a gun with a 3D printer, in fact, it can be done now.

You're too fucking stupid to be on Zero Hedge, get lost moron.

DosZap's picture

Schools, churches and post offices are gun-free zones. Courts?

Not in Texas.I know many CCP holders attending both services, and the church is 2000 members strong.

FACT: Mass murders happen where the sheep are left without a Sherherd, and are sitting ducks.

May as well give ENGRAVED invitations to all murdering morons, WE are guilty, WE make it too easy on them to succeed.

Again, Fight fire, with Fire.

State legislatures, are to blame of these murders, courts?, Judges Carry concealed here.

Deputies and LE are always around, also.

Schools and most churches are the prime targets for these sick bstds.(and anyone with half a brain knows why).

I really enjoyed your righteous indignations.  WELL PLAYED sir!  You get many thumbs up!

Freddie's picture

Well at Columbine - the men with guns (cops) sat outside until the shooting stopped.  During this this time, children and adults inside the school on cell phones were begging for help.

DavosSherman's picture

Yup.  Fucking pussy responders.  Sick fucking bastards.  They are as bad as the 2 shooters.

Freddie's picture

If they are not going to arm/train the teachers then make it a fire drill.  First shots fire - pull the fire alarm and get all the kids out of the building as fast as possible.  Like the building is on fire.   Every runs as fast as possible.

This would have saved lives in Columbine and CT.  No lockdown BS.

MachoMan's picture

The problem with procedures is that they, being known ahead of time, will be used to ensure maximum violence by the shooter.  Case in point, at the westside middle school shooting, the shooters (kids) pulled the fire alarm and then waited for all the students to pile out before opening fire...  the doors locked behind all the students (so that kids could not re-enter a burning building) and, as a result, they were more easily targeted.

Shikh Temple shoting in metro Milwaukee:

"The mass shooting occurred some time before 10:30 a.m., as members of the temple prepared for weekly worship. The first 911 calls were recorded at 10:26 a.m."

Fist responder, who is definitely a hero, was shot eight times rescung a wounded victim.  He urged his fellow ofices to enter the building and help the wounded.  But, they "followed procedure" and called in the swat team.

"Though the gunman was killed outside the temple not long after the shooting spree began, it wasn't until shortly before noon that a police SWAT team entered the building and brought uninjured people out."

One victicm bled to death and the women and children hid in terror for a hour and a half for their rescue.

....Call men with guns.

One stupid action deserves more stupid ideas.

The only solution is armed guards at the school. And who is going to pay for it? Surely not bernanke and his band of criminals. That leaves you.

Great, should be the the communities in each city for  paying armed guards,ONE city, community could hire 3-4 armed guards for what one teacher makes in most cities.

Ruffcut's picture

I guess you found your job. for shit pay. go for it before it is gone.

Schools are already armed to the teeth. In the inner city, that is. They have armed police, surveiillance cameras, metal detectors, and locked doors unless opened by staff. Just like a prison.

Guess it's time to do the same to the burbs.

jballz's picture

This IS what's wrong.

Realize I am barely within the species anymore, but there is no fucking way in hell I would send my children to a pseudo-prison for education. Not quite sure where I would draw the line, but way before locked doors that can only be opened by staff.

Not a fucking chance. Forget their safety, what are you teaching them?????

Home school, kids. You don't want none of what they're cooking in there.

"If Congress can employ money indefinitely to the general welfare, and are the sole and supreme judges of the general welfare, they may take the care of religion into their own hands; they may appoint teachers in every State, county and parish and pay them out of their public treasury; they may take into their own hands the education of children, establishing in like manner schools throughout the Union; they may assume the provision of the poor; they may undertake the regulation of all roads other than post-roads; in short, every thing, from the highest object of state legislation down to the most minute object of police, would be thrown under the power of Congress... Were the power of Congress to be established in the latitude contended for, it would subvert the very foundations, and transmute the very nature of the limited Government established by the people of America." - James Madison

Arm Teachers To Save Our Children, Now

THIS IS THE ANSWER TO 98% of all these cases.

Several licensed armed trained CCP teachers.

Locked doors, secure doors, and then watch the pussies, and mental cases die first.

Same way in Shall issue states, like Colorado, NO CCP's allowed in Theaters, Colleges, hospitals, etc, etc,WHY not?.

LE/Cops cannot be everywhere, they are and always have been reactive unless it's RARE occasion when a plain clothes is present.

After the death, and wanton murders WHO needs them?.

WHEN THE SHTF, stop em' cold, and eliminate 95-100% oif the needless deaths.

Many here are aware,it is one thing to be the only player doing the shooting, when THEY Start coming back at you, SHIT happens.

But, this will NEVER happen here, as that would solve the issue, they do NOT want it solved, they WANT ALL our weapons.

Period end of story.

Common sense tactics like these are too simple, and they WILL WORK.

State legislatures need to allow CCP carry in all places, ALL.

Nigh Eve's picture

What does the acronymn CCP represent?? Is it concealed carry permit??

Communication is more effective when your audience can understand you.

RockyRacoon's picture

It is odd... that nearly all of these shootings take place where guns are not allowed, or where IDing the shooter would be difficult, dark theaters and packed shopping malls.   I won't argue the merits of your argument but the correlation is of interest.  These shooters are mentally ill, but obviously not completely stupid.

A strong corelation between high intelligence ,and insanity has been

Evil is alive and thriving, and  fish rot from the head.

RockyRacoon's picture

That's interesting.  Legislation based upon the lowest common denominator, but the culprit is well above that level.  Hence, ineffective laws.   How many times have we seen this same scenario played out?   Oh, yeah, how 'bout the financial industry regulations.   Laws were made for the honest bankers, not the crooks.   Sigh....

Dr. Sandi's picture

Hey world...

No matter how evil and repulsive, SHIT HAPPENS.

We cannot stop it all, no matter how many rules, laws or draconian actions we might take.

It's horrifying.

And it's PART OF LIFE.

Until you join the robot revolt and Kill All Humans, there is going to be evil, nasty stuff in the world done by humans.

Crazy people bent on doing destruction upon their fellow man will always find a way around ANY foolproof schemes the rest of us come up with.

It's a nasty world out there, and none of us can control it. We can only try to become mature enough to deal with whatever crud life throws at us.

I, for one, am relieved that once again, this tragedy didn't affect me personally. Some others have in the past, some more are coming my way in the future. Nobody is immune from grief.

Humans are ALL insane. We just need to find a little happiness in the invervals when the Grim Reaper isn't looking our way.

DosZap's picture

We cannot stop it all, no matter how many rules, laws or draconian actions we might take.

NO, we never can or will.(Stop it All)

BUT WE CAN damn sure cut down the incedents of this garbage, and WE(State Legislatures) i.e. Politcos, are STOPPING us from STOPPING these kinds of senseless PREVENTABLE murders.

As stated, WHERE is the semblance of COMMON SENSE gone in this country.

The Libtards/Progressives/Fascists/Marxists, hate the loss of life, but they CONTRIBUTE to each and every instance because of their stupidity.

They are  as much to blame for each of these lost lives, as the  insane shooters. When they point fingers, they are coming directly BACK at themselves.

StychoKiller's picture

All the more reason to home-school yer children.

Lord Koos's picture

Yeah and that really helped.

Fuck it, I say we traing and arm little Timmy and Jennifer, send them to school packing heat.  The more guns the better -- what could possible go wrong?

Nigh Eve's picture

Did the school have a metal detector?

Dick Buttkiss's picture

Control isn't the solution unless you only want the government and other criminals to own them.

No, the solution is to put an end to a government "education" system that is a gun to every American child's head, meaning his/her ability to think critically and grow up to be something other than fodder for the military-industrial complex, a consuming unit for the crony capitalists, and a debt slave for the monetary fascists.

nmewn's picture

Your advocating for all 6yr olds to be trained to carry guns into a school sarcastically, when all it would have taken is for one kindergarten teacher or principal to be ALLOWED to have just is their right of self defense anywhere including the work place.

The only one armed in that school, that day, was apparently only the killer intent on murder.

Spastica Rex's picture

I was a teacher. I don't own a gun. I'm OK with training and arming teachers. If we're going to be the gun loving country we are, it makes sense.

I'm also for prohibiting parents from training and arming their crazy offspring.

MachoMan's picture

In this case, momma bear got her face shot...  I would think, in and of itself, that the prospects of your child shooting you in the face would be good enough incentive to steer them correctly...

I think a lot of gun crime happens precisely because of a lack of training and arming their offspring...  one thing that tends to dampen the spirits of children and given them a really, really strong respect for the power of firearms is to shoot a large game animal and then dress it, inspecting what damage the bullet did to the animal...  it certainly makes an impression.

Spastica Rex's picture

Yeah, but it wasn't just momma bear that faced the consequences, it was a bunch of little Bambies.

Don't train and arm crazy kids.

I'm being very anti-PC by saying "crazy," so, (not that I reckon you care) anyone who is offended can substitute "mentally ill" or "mentally disabled" or whatever.

MachoMan's picture

The point was that you do not need to even mention it because you do not need to legislate it...  it's already taken care of through civil liability...  however, in this case, mom got killed by the crazy shit, so she probably doesn't care about liability (getting wages garnished in perpetuity/having to file BK/etc.).

Spastica Rex's picture

You know what Macho Man - I will go with your position on legislation.

We're fucked anyway because collectively we're a society of juvenile, narcissistic, uneducated, medicated, violent dipshits who will never get their shit together enough to save themselves from eventual suicide. Guess what, we - you, me - can't escape the collective sum of individual choices.

Might as well be free while we're killing ourselves.

And I didn't say anything about Ayn Rand.

MachoMan's picture

We're not fucked...  you're talking about people who, throughout history, have NEVER meant anything and acting like because they're fucking idiots, that we're doomed...  it's the margins that control society, not the herd.  Always has been, probably always will be.

The only difference between the margins is that one side wants to wrangle the herd towards the slaughter house, while the other wants to tear down fences...  life falling somewhere in between.

john39's picture

That guy's post is appearing all over the Internet. Clearly a canned response, to try and discredit the perfectly logical response of arming a few teachers to protect kids.

nmewn's picture

Agreed, he's stirring the pot.

I don't think it's unreasonable for teachers who already have weapons to be allowed legally to bring them into school. The kids wouldn't know which teacher had them (but of course some would suspect once they got older).

As remarked on elsewhere, I'm old enough to remember just about every wood shop teacher and gym teacher were known to own guns...even though we never saw any in school we knew there was the possibility it was there, their car, locker...somewhere.

It wasn't a big deal.

MachoMan's picture

In rural areas at the present and in all other areas through the 80s for sure, you have all sorts of firearms sitting in the school parking lot...  kids go hunting after school...  it used to be a really, really common occurrence.

WakeUpPeeeeeople's picture

If they can arm airline pilots then why not teachers. Training someone to handle a firearm is not rocket science. Make it part of the job description.

rufusbird's picture

I just taught my grand kids safety with daisy air rifle BB guns. the first thing my 7 year old Grandson does after he caulks the air rifle is to put the safety on. He and my slightly older grand daugher have both learned to point the gun toward the ground and never point it at a person. They can both hit a tin can repeatley at 40 feet. It they can do it with a BB gun, they can do it with a 22 rifle. If they can do it, I am sure an elementary school teacher can learn to do the same thing.

Signed, I leaned gun safety and respect for guns at a gun safety class as a preteen over 50 years ago.

Supernova Born's picture

Many teachers might not like it but they have a DUTY IMO, to be able to PROTECT the children in their care.

Many women can shoot quite well. And never underestimate the backbone that comes with lack of an alternative.

Teachers in a school under attack cannot sit outside on the "perimeter" waiting for the Homeland Security commandos to show up an hour and a half later.

Trained volunteer teachers/staff would be far more likely to have the proper mindset.

The real problem is the socialist NEA (teacher union) vs. the ideals of a conservative group like the NRA.

StychoKiller's picture

No, the REAL issue is placing the puppies (children) in a barrel and then crying about it when some nutjob shoots them.  Education of our children should NOT be a function of govt.  Notice that no private school has been targeted...

AmCockerSpaniel's picture

One man can take away the Second Amendment right In a few minutes. Why vote when it's so easy to change the law of the land? It's said; That in Scientific American, 30 % of ALL males can be helped clinically (the use of drugs). Mental illness is very wide spread, and is genetic. It looks to be an issue with the fact that males have both a X and Y chromosome, while females have two Y chromosomes. A defect in one can be over ridden by the other Y. Men don't have that option. The good news is the women still love us. Back to guns. I don't trust our government to have all the guns. It's that they can and are bought by the 0.1 %, and our votes really don't count (Free Trade).

Bollixed's picture

The real problem is mental illness and the unwilllingness of those in charge to recognize that you can't feed nostop violence to the masses and expect the mentally challenged among them to not be affected for the worse. These acts are unnatural, and kids who grow up worshiping 'gangstas' and playing 'first person shooting games' are only going to reflect what they have been conditioned to.

This isn't about guns as much as it is a reflection of an unhealthy society.

Diogenes's picture

At last some common sense. As long as shooting someone is the first solution that comes to mind for every problem, there will be mentally disturbed individuals and those with poor judgement and self control, who act on it.

Shooting someone should be the last thing  that comes to mind, not the first.'s picture
Arming teachers and other responsible adults to save children works.

Pearl High School shooting

The incident began on the morning of October 1, 1997 when Luke Woodham fatally stabbed and bludgeoned his mother, Mary Woodham, as she prepared for a morning jog. At his trial, Woodham claimed that he could not remember killing his mother.

Woodham drove his mother's car to Pearl High School. Wearing an orange jumpsuit and a trenchcoat,[1] he made no attempt to hide his rifle. When he entered the school, he fatally shot Lydia Kaye Dew and Christina Menefee, his former girlfriend. Pearl High School assistant band director, Jeff Cannon, was standing five feet away from Dew when she was fatally shot. Woodham went on to wound seven others before leaving, intending to drive off campus and conduct another shooting at the nearby Pearl Junior High School. However, assistant principal Joel Myrick had retrieved a .45 pistol from the glove compartment of his truck and subdued Woodham inside his mother's car. Then Myrick demanded "Why did you shoot my kids?" to which Woodham replied, "Life has wronged me, sir."[2]

Parker Middle School dance shooting

The Parker Middle School dance shooting was an incident that occurred on April 24, 1998 at a restaurant in Edinboro, Pennsylvania, United States. 14-year-old Andrew Jerome Wurst fatally shot 48-year-old John Gillette, and wounded another teacher and two students[1] at Nick's Place (a nearby restaurant) during an 8th grade graduation dance.[2]

The shooting ended when the owner of Nick's Place, James Strand, intervened and confronted Wurst with his shotgun, ordering him to drop his weapon and later holding him at bay for eleven minutes.
