THE ONE-PERCENT’S DOCTRINE FOR THE REST OF US: WE ARE NOT HUMAN BEINGS, BUT LIVESTOCK WHOSE MEAT THEY EXTRACT AS “RENT”

A little over a year ago, while researching the Confederacy’s economy, I stumbled across this unnerving graph charting the value of America’s “stock of slaves” in the last decades before the Civil War.
This graph tells the real story behind the South’s secession: the value of the South’s “slave stock”—the property of the ruling class — soared as secession approached, reaching an almost 90-degree angle in those final years before Harper’s Ferry. The South’s ruling class seceded to protect their riches, period:

From afar, if you didn’t know that human “slave stock” was the asset being charted, you could easily mistake this graph, and its parabolic trajectory, for one of the many destructive asset bubbles this country has suffered right up through our own time.
Up close, this graph drips greed, mass murder and shame — it strips away the historical revisionism that falsely ascribed the South’s “cause” to an almost selfless, tragically romantic attachment to “tradition” and “culture”; it gives lie to the myth that slave owners kept their slaves to the detriment of their own bottom line.
Like the worst wars and the worst of history’s villains, the Confederacy’s one percenters seceded and fought in order to continue profiting from their most valuable investment properties — their human slave stock.
The graph comes from a grim working paper, “Capitalists Without Capital”, written in the late 1980s by a UC Berkeley economist, Richard Sutch, and a UC Riverside historian, Robert Ransom.
As they showed, slavery produced huge profits for southerners who invested in slave capital — to the detriment of all other portfolio investments, as the value of slaves soared in the mid-19th century. By that time, by far the largest cotton-growing states’ wealth was in slave stock, not in real estate or other investments.
The slave trade was outlawed in 1808; but the slave population quadrupled from 1 million in 1800 to 4 million in 1860 — encouraged by slaveowners who “bred” their human stock, thereby multiplying their profits as the value of each slave rose.
Slavery is often portrayed by revisionist historians as somehow antithetical to market capitalism; in reality, slavery was a winning portfolio investment, the very incarnation of just how evil “free-market” capitalism can be. As the authors write:
“If slaves … were an investment included in the asset portfolio of the planter/entrepreneur, they helped satisfy the owner’s demand for wealth. But unlike most other forms of capital, which depreciate with time, the stock of slaves appreciated. Thus, the growth of the slave population continuously increased the stock of wealth.”
What makes this graph so disturbing for us in 2012 is what it suggests about today’s “1 percent” — and how they view the rest of us. It gives form to the brutal crackdown on the Occupy protests — and suggests darker things to come as we try to free ourselves from their vision of civilization, and our place in it.
Contrast that with this McKinsey report put out a few years ago by the director of the consulting group’s New York office. Titled “The New Metrics of Corporate Performance: Profit Per Employee”, the report argues that the best performing firms in our increasingly financialized era are those companies that have learned to squeeze ever-larger profits out of each employee — and not by the more traditional “return on investment” metric.
The McKinsey report looked at the world’s 30 largest companies between 1995 and 2005, and found that their return on human capital more than doubled, from an average of $35,000 profit per employee to $83,000, leading to this rather frank and nauseating conclusion:
“If a company’s capital intensity doesn’t increase, profit per employee is a pretty good proxy for the return on intangibles. The hallmark of financial performance in today’s digital age is an expanded ability to earn ‘rents’ from intangibles. Profit per employee is one measure of those rents. If a company boosts its profit per employee without increasing its capital intensity, management will increase its rents.”
Extracting rent from “employees” as a business strategy: This is supposed to be the language of feudalism, not modern advanced capitalism — and yet this is the cutting edge in 21st century capitalist thinking, unashamed and unvarnished:
“One way to improve a company’s profit per employee is simply to shed low-profit employees. But if they generate profit greater than the cost of the capital used to support their work, shedding them actually reduces the creation of wealth.”
As with slave stock in a Southern investor’s portfolio, the McKinsey report argues that as a corporation learns to successfully extract rent from its employees, the more employees it extracts rent from, the greater its aggregate profits.

To compare “the 99 percent” to African slaves would be crude; but the mindset of “the 1 percent” then, as now, is eerily consistent. They view the rest of us not as human beings with rights, but as livestock whose meat is “rent” to be extracted.
This is the language of plutocratic capitalism, a brutal system totally incompatible with democracy and antithetical to republican government and civilization. It is the language of misery, and misery is what “the 1 percent” is promising “the 99 percent” for years to come, in ever-greater doses.

I agree mostly. However two of the first people to open my eyes to what is unfolding today were both university History professors. One of them was a former officer and scholar who had previously worked at West Point. He spoke of a period of "aberrant US behavior" starting after ww2. Sounds very similar to Eisenhowers farewell address. I could go on but I would bore you. The other was a German History teacher speaking about the creation of the EU, and that it was a political apparatus using economic means. Again I could go on, but the point is there are good teachers out there encouraging critical thinking but they to are trapped in a system that is against them at every turn.

Slavery was a government institution. There were laws forbidding slaves (human beings) from learning to read, owning guns and all manner of suppression.
Government resources and force were used to track down runaways.
Without the laws and support of the government, slaves could have legally revolted and killed their masters in self defense.

Slavery was a popular thing.
The so called one per cent slave owners were actually the elite of a base that supported and wish they could enjoy slave ownership.
One could argue that slavery as a human condition is a natural occurrence. Humans have been kept as slaves across the globe and for almost all of human history.
This Afrocentric idea that slaves were only blacks africans is stupid and ignorant. The concept of race is an entirely new idea that is probably less than a couple hundred years old. Slavery is an economic deal. Ada Smith argued that slavery was a poor investment and should not, stictly economically speaking exist, but it did. What Smit missed was the problems the Europeans had in economically developing the Americas.
The best slaves most certainly would have been the native Indians. They were already here and many tribes sold slaves to the Europeans. There ws no need to ship Black fricans across the ocean except for one thing. The natives died awfully fast when exposed to yellow fever, malaria and small pox which the Europeans imported. Malaria was brought with tobacco and sugar cane.
Funny thing is the Euro died of those things too. Black Africans on the other hand had developed resistance over the centuries and proved to be the best source of labor. That's why they were bought as slaves from other black africans - slavery being a long time custom in Africa. many people kept slaves and slaves inAfrica were truly a person's wealth, where int he west wealth was in capital - land, money, etc but nt necessarily in the number of slaves.
Colonial land holders needed workers to fuel the demand for tobacco, sugar/rum/molasses, guano for fertilizer, and about anything else that came from the America's malaria belt. where malaria wasn't present slavery never kept a foothold and died out quickly because the free market figured out it was indeed a bad investment as Adam Smith described. In the south and tropics slaves made a hell of a lot of sense.

The real reasons for the slaughter of more than six hundred thousand ordinary Americans on both sides were, in fact, just the same two old reasons for each and every war from the dawn of time until today: the insatiable greed of the ruling class for ever more wealth and power.
The northern ruling class, represented by Lincoln, drooling at the prospect of the cash to be made in the kind of large-scale industrialization occurring in Britain, wanted free land, a large pool of cheap labor, a central bank which would operate strictly in their interests and a "free" market surrounded by high tariffs to protect their own industrial operations and maximize their profits.
The southern ruling class, which had largely controlled the federal government since the Revolution, simply wanted to maintain the status quo and, most importantly, wanted no tariff barriers which would increase the cost of manufactured goods imported into the South from Europe which would inevitably lead to other countries putting rataliatory tariffs on the agricultural products exported from the South.
The "emancipation" of the slaves was a tactic which had the effect of destroying the power base which the southern ruling class derived from slavery and "freeing" millions of slaves who then became available as a cheap labor for northern factories and mills. They augmented the huge number of poor whites, men and women, adults and children, who labored in atrocious conditions for long hours for pitiful pay.
Abraham Lincoln is yet another American icon, a largely fictional creation, who doesn’t stand up to scrutiny. The "Great Emancipator" opposed integration and intermarriage, did not think that freed slaves should be given full legal and voting rights, and forcefully advocated both before and during the Civil War that all blacks should be deported to Africa or the West Indies.

Lincoln’s armies committed countless war crimes and atrocities, burning and looting civilian property, destroying entire cities and laying waste vast areas of countryside. Lincoln imposed a fascist regime within the Union states, making a farce of the Constitution. His regime arrested thousands of critics of his war policies, including dozens of newspaper editors and publishers. Under Lincoln, the writ of habeas corpus, a fundamental characteristic of a democratic society, was revoked, and mail and press censorship was imposed.
Only after the Confederate states refused Lincoln’s offer to leave the slaves in chains if they stopped fighting did he issue the Emancipation Proclamation which purported to free slaves in states not under Union control. Slaves in states controlled by Lincoln remained in slavery.

The two men who are probably the greediest, most ruthless and most successful war profiteers in history, John D. Rockefeller and J.P. Morgan, pay three hundred dollars each to evade military service in the Union Army during the Civil War, the Texas Air National Guard not having been created yet.
We've been told au nauseum that the Civil War ended slavery, but, to a large extent, it was just repackaged. For almost a century following the end of the Civil War, there are so many laws in the south limiting the freedom of blacks that it is almost impossible for a black person not to be a criminal. Vagrancy and changing jobs without the consent of the previous employer are the charges which most often lead to blacks being jailed.
A form of slavery, reserved almost exclusively for black prisoners, is incarceration in forced labor camps operated by state and local governments, farmers and businessmen. Among the corporations which use slave labor provided by the southern penal system is J.P. Morgan's United States Steel.

US citizens want to sell the idea that they stand for freedom, justice and truth.
As a result, the civil war, for which slavery was central, is forced through a perception angle.
It has to be for emancipation because that is what freedom loving people would go at war for.
The reality is indeed that while slavery was central to the US civil war, the angle was not freedom.
It was about making a statement of power, who the boss's, alright.
The best in that story is that abolition of slavery in the US of A, the mecca of US citizenism, happened coincidentally.
