WB7: Several items of interest surfaced over the Christmas Holiday with regard to Social Media Strip Mining and data cloud euphoria:

1. Facebook's privacy settings are evidently too complicated for Zuckerberg's sister to navigate. Not surporising, they are not designed for anyone to successfully navigate. If you succeed in mastering Facebook's privacy settings, you are in line for Krugman's Nobel.

2. Our Congress, which always has our best interests at heart do they not, managed to expunge the provision of the NDAA which would have required a warrant for government access to our email accounts. Surprised?

3. Instagram, shifted into hyper-back-pedaling mode. Of course they want to convert user images to advertisements. Isn't that what Facebook wants to do? Stripmining user privacy.

4. "Facebook's New Motto: If it's free, it's not the First Amendment."

I don't mind that so many others use these services for seemingly inane purposes. Photo sharing is actually more engaging than sitting around watching TV when you get right down to it. It is two way communication.

What concerns me is the way these giant social media players are displacing other traditional channels of content sharing and distribution, yet they obviously consider themselves exempt from well worn principles of free speech, privacy, open access and fair use.

They cannot just say if you don't like it go somewhere else. That's not good enough.

You can't deny access to so called "fringe groups" and allow mainstream political groups to remain ensconced.

That is not the level playing field of ideas envisioned by the First Amendment.

At some point, Facebook becomes a quasi-public space like Zucotti Park and they cannot just arbitrarily deny access to users without some form of due process.

Their perfect commercial world is a world bereft of unpopular ideas or political controversy.

A happy sheepful place.

5. It was revealed that plain old fashioned email marketing provides a higher retail ROI than social media advertising, which also came behind display ads and web search...

And I received this on Boxing Day...

Yes, I thought about this. Schumer actually proposed a law prohibiting online aliases last year during the heat of OWS. Eventually they will clamp down on everything in the name of security.

It's already happening (the alias thing). If you have a GMail account and you sign in to Youtube, it will ask if you if you want to use your alias, or your full name. If you use an alias, it keeps reminding you that you can "start using your full name at any time". I hadn't noticed it until recently, but now I get promoted whenever I sign in to GMail and then use Youtube. Silly me.

the social media millionaires have been China-sized. in China the status quo is based on the philosophy of Confucius, and goes to the core of their culture. communism seems natural to them, and for their American counterparts, this generation embracing the technology, the problem rests with a generation which cannot remember when the peoples republic did not stock their shelves with goods and provide them all the gadgets they desired, and enabled them to be millionaires. they identify more with China than with the FF, capitalism, or the rights of the individual under the Constituion.

"A happy sheepful place." full of un-questioning, uncaring drones being droned

to it, i will always say: NO.

another world is possible... think what we Could do and never be limited by the ugly Faceboob-esque monstrosities that elites trot out in front of us

cut them to shreds with a photon katana

$FB is a public commons, fuck their ToS - it now belongs to The People

put good men and women in office who will arrest the banksters and zuckerberg, lets socialize the wealth of the Elites and everyone else gets a debt jubilee worldwide, backed up by US Military.

send seal team six to get lloyd blankfein etc.

take back the republic, wake people up, create a real third party and break the back of the controlled paradigm

take back our congress

it all starts with political cartoons and Committees of Correspondence

and if we fail they will get their engineered civil war - may whatever god you believe in have mercy on you if the U.S. citizenry is ever disarmed

the clash of civilizations is the other route - nato missile shield, korea/jpn/chn

of course the faceboob algobots will automatically strip search your free speech if you mention any of this, so we will henceforth refer to the new world order as "large fries to go"

I have a bookk contract that requires me to join Facebook! Yeahm, that's right. OK, so I did. Now I am a public product. Facebook sends me threatening emails ]from time to time, because I break rules I didn't know about because I didn't read the terms of service. If I had read them I wouldn't like them and I have to sign up anyway, so why bother?

I figure I have no vested interest in folowing Fcaebook's rules. If they want to "freeze" my account, or worse (i mean better) boot me off of Facebook altogether, I suppose my lawyer can argue that I fulfilled my contractual obligations with my publisher, and I'm off the hook- after all, Facebook would have gotten rid of me, not the other way around!

So I am trying as hard as I can to get tossed into the briar patch. Of course, irony being the dominant  mood of the age, Facebook refuses to boot me; I suppose Facebook gets its self-aware jollies simply by threatening me, all the while keeping me within its enslaving matrix.

Oh, the fun!

Fbook is much more sinister than ya might believe. They choose your friends for you, slowly, so you don't notice. They choose what your opinion will be, slowly so you don't notice. They sell you the lie, slowly so you won't notice. They sell you an imaginary life. All too comfortable. So you will be a happier, more controlable and willing slave. Relax. Let go. Freedom and liberty are just a figment of your imagination. You don't need guns, the government will protect you and take care of your every need.

Fuck that bullshit, I'm buying more guns

Good (and useful) info as usual WB7.

I wonder if a large, coordinated enough, "disinformation" campaign could be mounted to gum up Facebook's (or any social media's) nefarious intentions?

Of course that would require that I join FB which I refuse to do.

I don't think Facebooks intentions are anything more than making money on user data and online habits.

However, that becomes nefarious because they are so willing to lean way over for the government in order to operate freely and as we have seen, they consider themselves some sort of arbiter of acceptable content. It goes way beyond hate speech etc.

And the accounts being shut down are prominent, and include Mike Rivero`s account (he runswhatreallyhappened.com)

That's all figurative of course, actually he grew up in a very boring and non-descript blue collar bedroom community called Dobbs Ferry.

He is, however, a Harvard-Soviet. A term I find very useful of late.

JOYFUL's picture

it's getting kind of late in the day to beat around the bush on matters of extreme importance to peoples' chances of survival, but if the protocol here calls for being figurative, ok, let's go with the flow...meet

Noel Ignatiev, an academic from Harvard. Dr. Ignatiev is the founder of a journal, Race Traitor, which has as its motto, “treason to whiteness is loyalty to humanity.” The journal's purpose is "to abolish the white race."

It would be shabby to impute a lack of goodwill to the professor's program, so I'm going to imagine that what he is really proposing is to expand our options...or something to that effect - in the same way that surveilling every aspect of your life is the governments' way of protecting your freedoms...or something like that.
Hey! This figurative thing is kinda fun!

Alan Ginsberg, another spawn of the russian jewish diaspora, was born and raised near to Newark NJ, and singlehandedly did more to advance the culture war against America than any other figure since Lev Bronstein. Without even trying. It's bred in the bone. As a figure of speech, I mean!

Zucc's is sayan, and Harvard is the bell-weather center for the planned demise of America. But like the good professor's words, that's all just figuaratively speaking, and mentioned in the spirit of kidding around, good clean fun-like.

There is an example of communication purely as an art.

Ham radio

In ham radio, you are prohibited from communicating political content, for the simple reason that there would otherwise be no worldwide ham radio. I remember communicating with Russians etc during the cold war. How's the weather in Siberia Ivan? What's your QTH?

But this model does not serve the Internet moguls well because it also prohibits commercial use.

I tried to cancel a Facebook account two months ago that was inadvertently created when I commented on a MSM article.  Facebook now says my account is locked for access because of a suspicious address location in Thailand. Meanwhile, I’m still getting daily messages asking, “Do you know Joe Buck, Mary Smith, Tom Jones, etc.?” I wonder if these people know what Facebook wants me to know? What a farce their operating system is, and what an abusive invasion of privacy too.

What if a software program signed up millions of fictitious users each day?

had a similar idea.
You open up an account and let a desktop application upload all kinds of gibbrish texts, haikus, fake daily routines, photocollages (the app is capable of mixing obamas face with zuckerbergs eyes etc.... trillions of combinations if you have good material to work with)...
If we could convince a lot of people to use such a software, many would actually reactivate their "deleted" facebook accounts just to create chaos.
I would do it...

now we need someone to create such an app...

What do you guys think? Will congress pass a law to make such an app illegal?
Or what do you say, will facebook insert captchas at every step to make a bot fail?

Then I de-activated my facebook account & never looked back many moons ago.
