Pests

Other Pests

If you live in America, you know it has been unusually hot. During the week of March 18, 3,550 heat records were set.
.

The spring heat has brought us a large new crop of unwanted visitors. High on the list is the Halyomorpha halys, better know as Brown Marmorated Stink Bug, or “stinkers” for short. If you have not yet come across these pests, you probably soon will. They are spreading across the country like wildfire.

These bugs are hardy sons of bitches. They are about ¾ of inch long, and have a very hard shell. They hibernate in the winter. As a result of the early spring, they are coming out in droves. A few pics of what to look for:

.

I happened to be in Florida over the weekend and was very surprised to learn that stinkers are problem there. I thought they were just an issue for the North-East. The Florida agriculture Department had this to say about the arrival of Stinkers in the Sun Shine state:

US distribution of this pest is a moving target. These bugs are suited ideally to hitchhiking with items moved by human activity.

In Florida, a specimen was caught in a trap next to a commercial ship berth at Port Everglades. Additionally, several specimens have been found in homes and vehicles of seasonal residents, or residents who moved to Florida from various infested states.

It feeds on a wide range of hosts, including peach, apple, pear, fig, mulberry, grape, raspberry, citrus and persimmon, as well as on row crops such as snap bean and soybean.

Stinkers are a new phenomenon in America. They came to this country from China. They were first observed in 1998 in Allentown PA. They have been proliferating and spreading ever since. They kill crops and are a nuisance. These bugs have the potential to cause a great deal of damage. They have a needle-like nose that bores into fruit/corn and other crops. This ruins the crops.

Last year some poor bastard in Maryland had his house taken over by tens of thousands of stinkers. The bugs won, the homeowner lost:

If you see one of these bugs, don’t step on it. You’ll regret it if you do. When crushed, they stink. Your house will smell awful and you’ll need a new pair of shoes (hence the name). Pesticides will kill them, but that is not a good solution either. If they die in the walls,  they'll rot and stink as if they were crushed. The odor of their death can bring another problem. The smell of the dead stinkers attracts carpet beetles, which can be as problematic as the stinkers themselves.

So far stinkers have been found in thirty-seven states. They hitch a ride on cars and trucks; by the end of 2012 they will be in every state.

It's generally not an issue with warming or climate change per se. Some minor degree of warming has indeed occurred. The climate (surprise!) is not static, never has been. My own issue with the 'global warming' scam is and has always been that globalist have latched onto the phenomena as an excuse to further Totalitarian objectives.

No sentient being can state unequivocally that warming or change is driven primarily by human action, let alone specifically due to the production of CO2.

The science is not even close to settled and meaningful action is a fools errand at any rate when one considers the reality of world affairs and the need for developing nations (China/India) to resource ever increasing amounts of energy.

Adaptation to climate change makes sense. Foolishly attempting to stop it does not.

ISEEIT:

"No sentient being can state unequivocally that warming or change is driven primarily by human action, let alone specifically due to the production of CO2."

First of all, please be careful with 'sentient being'; there are not so many as we think---the walking dead are not sentient beings-----that leaves out most of the species to begin with------most zen guys agree on this tiny point.

The fact that humans are so arrogant as to believe that they are the cause of an increase in heat in the universe is pretty fucking remarkable! And it doesn't matter because you nail it quite nicely with:

"Adaptation to climate change makes sense. Foolishly attempting to stop it does not."

And it doesn't matter because the adapting, itself, may be more than this species can accomplish. We have never gotten beyond 'death and destruction', and yet, WE consider US to be the only intelligent life form;

Ponder that for a while rather than worrying about sounding like a dictator---that's all we seem capable of electing as presidents, anyway: another example of our 'intelligence'.

Thanks for your post            something worthy of writing, imo             om

First link I clicked on had Ice Core Data... you don't know how funny that is.

Have a watch.

Don't click it off in disgust.  Wait until he gives his datapoint.  You will know when he does.

It is kinda like economics.  We have our economists writing about scrip systems like this (this is also funny if you study our current monetary system)

What was the other one? It should probably be noted that this relation was begun by US transglobal corporations for exploitation as usual.

Let us not blame corporation for what would have happened without them anyway. Colorado potato beetle jumped from Americas to Europe (around 19th century) without any corporate interference. That "jump" resulted in famines across the Europe in which lower classes heavily related on easy-to-grow potato. Existence of trade and suitable environment are enough for any species transmission.

Well, I guess my poorly made point was - other products not so much other living pests.

To wit today I will yet again replace my sliding door rollers, but this time hopefully I have found some Merikan made ones with real steel roller bearings instead of the Chinese ones that I have been using and last a year if lucky.  PITA to replace.

But your point is well taken that this is not always so much about Chinese behavior as it is about US transglobal exploitive behavior.  Apropos the crappy rollers.

Thanks,

Pete

This may be factually correct regarding a specific species, however I can say with certainty that Texas had stink bugs when I was growing up (late 70s/early 80s). I immediately recalled the smell as soon as I started reading. These were fun to catch and smack little sister on the back so that they squished. Well, I mean watching the neighbor's kid catch them and smack his little sister on the back ...

Sticks hands in pockets and whistles...

These brown marmorated stink bugs are not the stink bugs of your youth. When I saw the picture that Bruce posted, my first reaction was, "oh, that's a squash bug."

However, after checking wikipedia for both, it turns out that what I call a squash bug is what some people call a stink bug.

According to the article on squash bugs, one of their characteristics is "a metathoracic stink gland".

The brown marmorated bastards are a recent (1998) introduction, and it looks like they'll try to get into your house in the winter if they can find an entrance.

Time to grow some tobacco and brew up some insecticide.

Why the hell would a "gold bug" or a site like ZH LOVE Ben Bernanke, other than for comedic value?  Even if one is virtually 100% in PM's, his policies are destroying everything else.  Best outcome is to have the gold preserve purchasing power in the long run while everything else around is turned to ashes.  No thanks, I'd rather not have society crash & burn to preserve the purchasing power of my PM's.  I didn't junk ya, but I disagree with you...that is, unless I missed the sarc intention.

actually the midget has been Enemy No.1 with his cartel (money monopolists) in Central Banks around the world for rigging the Gold price and the smackdowns

Bernanke is to Gold what Hitler is to childcare

maybe one day we'll put him on trial because The Feds a private bank with no mandate to be rigging prices so the Regulators can go get him whenever they like on dozens of criminal counts

....er, where is the SEC ???
