California Slammed With Fukushima Radiation

George Washington's picture

The Journal Environmental Science and Technology reports in a new study that the Fukushima radiation plume contacted North America at California “with greatest exposure in central and southern California”, and that Southern California's seaweed tested over 500% higher for radioactive  iodine-131 than anywhere else in the U.S. and Canada:

Projected paths of the radioactive atmospheric plume emanating from the Fukushima reactors, best described as airborne particles or aerosols for 131I, 137Cs, and 35S, and subsequent atmospheric monitoring showed it coming in contact with the North American continent at California, with greatest exposure in central and southern California. Government monitoring sites in Anaheim (southern California) recorded peak airborne concentrations of 131I at 1.9 pCi m−3

Anaheim is where Disneyland is located.

EneNews summarizes the data:

Corona Del Mar (Highest in Southern California)

  • 2.5 Bq/gdwt (gram dry weight)= 2,500 Bq/kg of dry seaweed

Santa Cruz (Highest in Central California)

  • 2.0 Bq/gdwt = 2,000 Bq/kg of dry seaweed

Simon Fraser University in Canada also tested North American seaweed after Fukushima:

  • “In samples of dehydrated seaweed taken on March 15 near the North Vancouver SeaBus terminal, the count was zero; on March 22 it was 310 Bq per kilogram; and by March 28 it was 380 Bq/kg.” -Vancouver Sun
  • Seaweed in Seattle also tested positive for iodine-131; levels were not reported -KIRO
  • No results after March 28 were reported

In addition, radioactive debris is starting to wash up on the Pacific Coast. And because the Japanese are burning radioactive materials instead of disposing of them, .

Of course, the government is doing everything it can to help citizens cover up what’s occurring. We pointed out in January:

Instead of doing much to try to protect their citizens from Fukushima, Japan, the U.S. and the EU all just raised the radiation levels they deem “safe”.

Nuclear expert Arnie Gundersen says that high-level friends in the State Department told him that Hillary Clinton signed a pact with her counterpart in Japan agreeing that the U.S. will continue buying seafood from Japan, despite that food not being tested for radioactive materials [see this].

And the Department of Energy is trying to replace the scientifically accepted model of the dangers of low dose radiation based on voodoo science. Specifically, DOE’s Lawrence Berkeley Labs used a mutant line of human cells in a petri dish which was able to repair damage from low doses of radiation, and extrapolated to the unsupported conclusion that everyone is immune to low doses of radiation….

Indeed:

American and Canadian authorities have virtually stopped monitoring airborne radiation, and are not testing fish for radiation. (Indeed, the EPA reacted to Fukushima by raising “acceptable” radiation levels.)

So – as in Japan – radiation is usually discovered by citizens and the handful of research scientists with funding to check, and not the government. See this, this, this, this, this and this.

The Japanese government’s entire strategy from day one has been to cover up the severity of the Fukushima accident. This has likely led to unnecessary, additional deaths.

Indeed, the core problem is that all of the world’s nuclear agencies are wholly captured by the nuclear industry … as are virtually all of the supposedly independent health agencies.

So the failure of the American, Canadian and other governments to test for and share results is making it difficult to hold an open scientific debate about what is happening.

And it’s not just radiation from Japan.  An effort by the Southern California Edison power company to secretly ramp up production to avoid public disclosure may have led to a leak at the San Onofre nuclear power plant.

any idea what sort of respiratory protection you can use? would the standard paper nose cones do any good, or do we need to go full OBA. i workout several times a week, outdoors, am i at risk? i visualize myself jogging in full scuba gear using imported air. say that's an idea, designer air, like designer water? we could go public with shares on wall street, and make enough money to move somewhere where the air is clean.

not at risk from Fukushima unless you live in Japan, as far as I can tell. I work at a nuke plant on the west coast, and if there was anything like an increase in dose rate or airborne contamination being detected outside of the restricted areas by any of the multitude of instruments on site, all hell would be breaking loose, millions of dollars would be flying down the drain, and CNN would have cameras everywhere.

I'm guessing if it was NOT in the interests of "national security" CNN et al would be advised to keep the circus balls in the air, continue to do nothing that would stampede the herd.

when we all understand that the people are not the nationstate, and the nationstate is exactly what is being "defended" - we'll also understand how expendable individuals are, and have always been.

"any idea what sort of respiratory protection you can use? would the standard paper nose cones do any good,"

You need a P100 rated mask (formerly called HEPA)

3M 6000 series are rated for Radionuclide dusts (uranium/plutonium).
3M datasheet Particulate Filter 7093 , P100 - 3M - http://bit.ly/HyymB5

http://www.pksafety.com/3m-lead-dust-respirator.html

For $17 you are good to go. And as P100 blocks 99.97% of aerosols too, you are safe from killer flu/SARS etc.
They have full face versions for $100...and the 7500 series if you want a better quality silicone mask.
Adult males take size large. Most women and kids around 10 take medium. Small is also available.

The enclosed box filters are perfect for outdoor use as they will stay dry. Plus, contaminants are trapped inside the filter box so you don't come in contact while changing filters. But wear gloves anyway if in really bad situation. And clean the mask with alcohol.

Buy masks and spare filters now to beat the last minute terror rush (and inflation). They store forever and don't go bad.

PS - Geiger counters don't work well for foodstuffs and water.
You need a scintillator tube and MCA to do those kind of checks ($5000 and up).
http://seintl.com/products/ursa_II.html

There are clever scint. setups on the market that can get the cost down to less than $1500 total.
Bee Research gamma spectrometry - http://bit.ly/HyyGQg (no scint tube included)
The scint. tube is the $$$ part.

But generally speaking "Go south young man",applies.

The corolis effect will take the worst airborne particles north.

Cotaminated sea borne debris will evenually end up everywhere

because of the ocean currents.

Abstract hatred for your fellow human is remarkable and should be closely studied if humans are truly interested in avoiding extinction. The prognosis isn't good I'm afraid.

Donating your brain for scientific study would be one small way you could atone for the damage you've already caused to the human species. On behalf of humans, I urge you to consider 2ml vinyl and a large caliber handgun pressed into the center of the esophagus just above the clavicle.

I suppose that depends on who you are. The EPA used to have radiation monitors spread around the country and linked to a public webpage displaying real-time measurements. Shortly after the Fukushima disaster, that webpage was taken down without explanation.

Sat, 03/31/2012 - 00:45 | 2305774 seek
seek's picture

Actually the only took down the consumer-oriented Fukushima page. The monitor pages stayed online.

Not that the remaining monitors weren't tampered with.

It's interesting that the monitors go down for maintenance whenever they're trending strongly up for a spike of radiation. I've kept my own monitor online for more than a year now, logging background radiation every second with only about 5 days of downtime. Twice when I saw a large spike trending, the EPA monitor for my area went offline -- and more interestingly within the next few days, monitors to the east (downwind) went off in sequence, clear across the country.

The levels were hardly hysteria-inducing, but a 10% increase in the background is pretty noticable in the statistics when it passes by..

There is no scientific basis for what I'm about to post; simply the opinion of a man in his 60s that's seen a pertinent slice of life. When this happened last year, I immediately realised that it would have serious repercussions as to mortality rates on the West Coast. I live in Norcal and have noticed a distinctive uptick in cancer related deaths of people in their 40s and 50s. Coincidence? Perhaps. Nevertheless, I've put my affairs in order.

You can't make conclusions like that.  The demographics of the Baby Boom generation would be enough to explain the "uptick" if there even is one.  They would be late Boomers, but cancers typically show up in people over 40, so if there are more people over 40 around, there you go.

I think it was all that strontium 90 in the milk we drank back then. Gotta love those above-ground nuclear (nukular?) tests. By now some 75% has decayed (half-life around 29 years) so the cancer rate should decrease sometime in the next 50 years.

We have more things killing us than radiation, actually. Radiation is pretty low on the list in fact. And the others are not complex at all.

We don't address these kinds of things because we think they only happen other people. It's a weakness we have. A blind spot, if you will.

all those Repug Governers getting monies from Novartis Pharma may find the rug pulled out from under their special tasks soon,

On October 25, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices voted to recommend giving the HPV vaccine to males between the ages of 11 and 21. They further recommend the vaccine series can be given to boys as young as nine, as well as to men up to the age of 26, especially if they engage in homosexual sex—allegedly to offer partial protection against genital warts, and cancers of the penis and rectum.

I'm guessing when they try to vaccinate boys as well, some parents will find their loud voice.

Too true, CA.

A. The HPV vaccine doesn't fucking work ... you can't vaccinate against a virus. A vaccine will only 'train' the immune system to recognise a single strain of a virus, which will soon evolve around it.

B. It is a criminal conspiracy to insert other sinister agents into the mandatory vaccines -- either now or in the future -- when all the performing seals have been trained (or forced) to line up for one. Arfff arfff!

C. Any external viral 'cancers' ... including skin cancer, warts and genital warts can be treated with an inexpensive natural ointment available for over 100 years from an Australian company* (http://www.lucaspapaw.com.au/).

Do not let any medical "professional" holding a syringe anywhere near yourself or your children! Opt out.
