State Officials In Alabama Close Gulf Shrimping After Scientists Find Severe Deformities
After scientists and fishermen have found severe deformities in a substantial percentage of Gulf seafood, the State of Alabama have moved to shut down shrimping.
WERC-FM local news reports:
Some area waters along the Gulf Coast will close to shrimping starting today. The areas closed are all waters in the Mississippi Sound, Mobile Bay, areas of Bon Secour, Wolf Bay, and Little Lagoon. The closure comes after scientists found smaller than average population of shrimp and lesions. They say the plan to test the water and will continue to run samples until the waters are re-opened. There is no set time when the waters will be open for shrimping again
Local ABC affiliate WEAR TV reports:
The Alabama Department of Conservation and Natural Resources has temporarily closed some local waterways to shrimping.
The waters were closed to shrimping on Monday.
The areas include all waters in the Mississippi Sound, Mobile Bay, areas of Bon Secour, Wolf Bay, and Little Lagoon.
The closure is in response to routine shrimp sampling that indicated the average size were smaller than 68 head-on shrimp per pound. Meaning biologists found smaller than average shrimp in the waters causing the temporary closure. They will continue to take samples in these areas and determine any modifications to the closures.
And we’d like to clarify that the closures were not due to lesions being found on shrimp as we reported earlier this weekend and Monday morning.
However, the Alabama Department of Conservation and Natural Resources (“ADCNR”) has previously pretended that shrimp closures were due to size – and not oil.
For example, on May 20, 2010 – a month after the Gulf oil spill started – ADCNR’s website said:
Closed all inside waters to shrimping. This closure is a seasonal closure due to shrimp size. Closure was not related to oil spill.
Is this surprising in a world where dead animals are hidden to reduce BP's liability and BP and the Coast Guard pretend that petroleum is “fish oil” and “algae”?

JW, I've been to the gulf multiple times in context to EHS as backup for research biologists since the incident. There aren't any longitudinal studies done re corexit as a mutagen (so I suppose this might be considered one /sarc/). However, what we do know is that crude has seeped for millions of years in that area, and consequently, the existing microbes have adapted to feed on it. Unfortunately corexit inhibits microbial digestion of oil. What creates most of the uncertainty (at least for biologists at site) regarding variations in flora and fauna is the IMMENSE amount of organophosphates and organochlorines that flow out of the Mississippi delta.

I've been reading this blog almost daily since it was at blogspot years ago.
"Go back two months?" Geno got mad recently because I posted something entailing a minor correction on something he posted. He hasn't gotten over it since and has "stalked" me (to use your silly word) ever since. So when he posted his comment today about Rickards, and it was clearly a troll and nothing more, I did a search of this blog for "Rickards", and the first thing that came up was that interview two months ago. And voila, there was Gene's original statement pouring praise on the book that he maligned (trolled) today.
What's more, I really enjoyed that interview with Rickards here two months ago, and BOUGHT THE BOOK IN PART ON GENO'S RECOMMENDATION. I have a memory.
So ol' Geno maligned the reputation of Rickards and his book, AN AUTHOR WHO HAS CONTRIBUTED NUMEROUS POSTS HERE AND HAS BEEN INTERVIEWED HERE, AFTER HAVING RECOMMENDED HIS BOOK TO BEGIN WITH, FOR NO OTHER REASON THAN BECAUSE HIS ASS WAS CHAPPED OVER MY DISAGREEING WITH HIM CORDIALLY ON SOMETHING RECENTLY.
