Fear we are returning to a time in history where it is a common occurrence to fight for one's life?
"There are going to be situations where people are going to go without assistance. That's just the facts of life." - Los Angeles Police Chief Daryl Gates
So, you are a successful trader, speculator, investor, money manager, and is typical, have little patience. Something has been bothering you. You have been reading Zero Hedge long enough that you are now absolutely convinced that TEOTWAWKI is indeed nigh, and it could well be quite violent. You have also decided that you want to do something to prepare, beyond getting short the equity markets and going long gold and silver coins, but you do not know what to do, exactly. The HELP function on your Bloomberg terminal is, unsurprisingly, not helpful. A quick review of the government and Red Cross emergency preparedness websites tells you nothing about guns. This is problematic, as you fear that we all might be returning to a time in history where it is a common occurrence to fight for one's life, and you know that we usually do that in today's day and age with guns, or a knife close in.
What to do?
Well, you could read several books such as The Long Emergency, Reinventing Collapse, One Second After, Alas Babylon, Patriots, and Lucifer's Hammer to gain an understanding of what some recent authors believe TEOTWAWKI might look like, and then try to formulate a plan on your own. You could also read countless blog posts on www.ar15.com/forums/b/10_Outdoors.html, www.survivalblog.com, or www.zombiehunters.org to see what other people with alleged or unknown expertise are doing to prepare for if/when TSHTF. I understand there is now a television show called Doomsday Preppers that you could watch. Not surprisingly, you can even hire professional consultants to help you prepare for the possibility of a coming apocalypse.
Alternatively, allow me to provide to you absolutely free of charge and in just one brief Zero Hedge article, A Guide for Those with Much Money and Very Little Patience Whom Want to Prepare for Zombie Apocalypse But Are Afraid to Google It For Fear of DHS Labeling Them A Terrorist. There are some unique aspects to this Guide. First, because it is for Those with Much Money, it assumes you can afford to drop as much as $25,000 and thus save much time by not trying to do things on the cheap. Second, because it is for Those with...Very Little Patience, it makes no attempt to explain the rationale behind each recommendation. One can complete the entire Guide within a couple of months, thus allowing you to put this fear out of your mind and move on to much more productive worries, except for fitness. Regular exercise should really become a habit for the duration of your life.
Item 1
Learn that the first rule of preparing for TEOTWAWKI is you do not talk about preparing for TEOTWAWKI. Tell nobody. Do, however, make up some lame excuses in advance for when some friend questions you about your actions and purchases. Say that you are getting ready to visit your rich and crazy uncle whom is a gun nut living in Alaskan bear country, or your friend in Detroit wants you to house sit. Just do not tell anyone what your plans or preparations are, or even that you have plans or preparations.
Item 2
Develop a basic mindset. Here are some ideas. Commit to prepare for zombies, so that currency collapse, EMP, hurricanes, revolution, world war, or anything else will seem relatively mild. Understand that the time to make a plan and prepare is before, not after a zombie invasion. Understand that there is no way you can plan or prepare for every contingency, but doing something today goes a long way to peace of mind, and eliminating any regrets should the shit actually hit the fan. Realize that everything is likely to cost more next year, if you can get it, so better to buy it now. Acknowledge that nobody really knows if, what, when, or how anything in the future is going to happen...it is all just speculation. Finally, always remember that, "on a long enough timeline the survival rate for everyone drops to zero," so don't get too worked up, or go into debt, just because of this little exercise in paranoia.
Item 3
Stick to the plan. Because you have very little patience, this Guide is not going to be concerned about detailed questions or nuances such as, 1) if you intend to leave or stay at home in case of TEOTWAWKI (also known as Bug In or Bug Out); 2) if you work far from or close to home; 3) if you live or work in an urban or rural area; 4) if you are a 30 years-old ex-marine, or a 55 years-old female florist; or 5) if you expect the zombie infestation to last 48 hours, 5 days, 12 months, or permanently.
This is a One-Guide-Fits-All (as long as you have the money) and accordingly all the actions and items have been designed and actually tested in real life (by those trained and certified in such things) to work with all the other items and actions in the Guide. Customize it at your own peril.
Item 4
Get yourself in shape so you can run for your life. Go running, no matter how slowly, five times per week. Work yourself up to 30-minutes during the week, and then a longer run on the weekends. After each run, do three sets of as many push-ups as you can do. When you go see your doctor to ask for permission to get healthy, ask her to find some way to get you off any drugs you currently require to survive, and to please write you a post-apocalyptic "ditch medicine" prescription for a broad spectrum open wound MRSA antibiotic like Bactrim DS (or something else if you have a sulfa allergy).
Item 5
Purchase the items on the following shopping list to outfit your person with a Get Back Home (GBH) pack (aka Evacuation Pack, aka Bug Out Bag, aka Assault Pack, aka 3 Day Pack, aka Survival Pack). It includes a First Aid Kit (aka FAK) and a set of clothing so you will not be forced to evacuate the city in your loafers, heels, wool suit, or dress (Read One Second After). This pack can reside in the trunk of your car if you are a commuter or in the hall closet if you live and work in a city.
Included on the list is an advanced, easy to use, compact, and highly reliable personal-defense weapon system that is made by FN Herstal, currently the largest arms manufacturer for the U.S. military. The FN FiveseveN pistol (get the model with tritium night sights installed) and PS90 rifle (Tri-Rail model) each fire the same 5.7 x 28 ammunition, which, along with these two weapons, is extremely light to carry. These weapons' standard magazines hold 20 and 50 rounds, respectively. Unlike many old-school firearms, these are actually fun to learn to operate, because they are so light, yet still have no felt recoil (aka kick). A Zeiss Z-Point optic (rifle sight), Urban ERT sling, TLR-1 weapon light, kydex pistol holster, magazine carriers, and spare magazines are all crucial components that cannot be excluded.

With the push of a single button the PS90 easily disassembles into two parts that fit in the bag; because there is no gas system it is also very easy to clean. The two extra rifle magazine pouches, concealed under a shirt and bandana, are accessible while wearing the pack. The lower exterior pocket contains the FAK. The rain cover keeps things dry and looking less military.
Not if, but when someone advises you to buy an AR style rifle and a Glock pistol, first ask yourself why you have broken the first rule for preparing for TEOTWAWKI, then put an extra 5-7 pounds of lead in your pack to represent the weight difference (including ammo) and go for a 15-mile hike while you try to remember Item 3 from above.
If you live in California where you are restricted to 10 round magazines, then maybe you should move. If you live in Illinois, NYC, or DC, then you should definitely move. If you live on Airstrip One (formerly Britain) where essentially only shotguns may be owned then adjust accordingly. If you live in Switzerland you probably already know how to shoot and have excellent equipment. Everyone should know and abide by their local gun laws, no matter how Draconian, illogical, and unconstitutional they may be. These laws are for your protection/sarc.
Total cost for this life insurance policy is less than $10,000, much of it in "uncivilized" traveling money.

In general, when given a choice, always choose the lighter weight and/or more expensive option. Lighter weight is fast. Lighter weight uses much less energy.

If you are a dentist, doctor, farmer, cowboy, mechanic, miner, fisherman, lumberman, mason, blacksmith, whore house piano player, plumber, butcher, or similar, then you are already set. If you are a derivatives trader, banker, realtor, healthcare administrator, politician, actuarial, benefits coordinator, DMV clerk, compliance officer, or similar, then get cracking.
In Conclusion
Truly, it does not matter how good my reasons are for each suggestion, or how qualified I am to make these recommendations, because I can absolutely guarantee an endless number of critics on the internet, at REI, or at your local gun store advising you of just the opposite of what I have said, on each and every point, and claiming far greater expertise on these matters. It is even likely some will respond critically to this post here on ZH in the comments below. However, I believe that an average plan that is well implemented is usually better than a great plan that is never implemented.
Now, it is on you. Follow this Guide and if the shit hits the fan then you are likely to be far better off than most people will. The best part, however, is the hedge on this zero hedge investment. Even if TEOTWAWKI does not occur, but your course instructors have at least average ability, then after completing this Guide you will no longer be a sheep, but rather a sheep dog.
Si vis pacem, para bellum. Everyone else is.

thanks, HH
Tgatliff you sound like you might be a little chubby, just hit the treadmill a little while you're dreaming up your get rich quick schemes
Why you ask? Common caliber. 5.7x28, while great, is far from common.
Exactly. 9 mm
And for a first course - a good first aid course - as in a first responder course as a minimum. (Ex EMT/Paramedic here, but still a good idea.)
That was my reaction too. better to get something in 308 or the NATO equivalent, or even better, one of those 9mm rifles so you can share ammo in that caliber.
For this mission the primary advantage are...
7. If the S doesn't HTF, your kids can use the P90 for their Men In Black Halloween costume...love it or not, you have to admit it's one goofy looking rifle!
Glock 22 and Kel-tec SUB2000 would provide the same advantages, carbine for increased hit prob at range, pistol for conceal, same mags.
with the additional benefit of using the magazine and cartridge used by probably close to 85% of LEO in America, not to mention the 450 million rounds of ammo that DHS so thoughtfully bought for us to use.
Let's see...
1 out of 6 isn't so good.
If one ever needs to pick up .40 cal rounds from dead LEOs then one could probably pick up their guns, too. Yes? Plus, 5.7x28 does better against bad guys wearing armor, especially this stuff.
Now, don't get all blue blood snobby on me over Kel Tec... I would have went Hi-Point were it not for their idiot decision to go with proprietary mags. Both companies build good, affordable products. Key on affordable there.
You'll have difficulty getting the real armour piercing 5.7 rounds for that weapon HH. Those are considered "naughty" by TPTB. A 22 WMR round would damn near have the same terminal performance as their "sporting" 5.7 ammo selections at 100 yards. Besides, body armor... too damn heavy, except for defensive apps. Heads and hips people, and it won't matter. Shoot whatever presents itself.
Your article is great man... take comfort in knowing that you're miles ahead of the vast majority and that you're doing huge service for those smart enough to stop and listen. Just most of the folks I know don't have champagne budgets, so we'll be using old ALICE gear, AK's, 12 gauges, Brahman boots and carhart outerwear.
See you at the races!
As i heard from a gun guru when asked "If i was sent to another planet, what gun would i choose out of all,id want an AK47.
As stated, this article's recommendations are not for gun gurus. My experience is that most "gun gurus" are retired men that love to bench shoot from the shade at the range, but could not carry their rifles, not to mention ammunition and water, to the corner store if their lives depended on it.
For this mission the primary advantage are... lower weight
I can dig it............................BUT, you have chosen the LEAST available round in the USA,if you ran out.
Stick with NATO ammo.
5.56 is light, and weapons for them are also.
Glocks are light, and 9mm is also.
BOTH types of ammo are available everywhere.(even off of dead combatants).
IMHO
Thanks for the info, and the time to put it together.
Get all types of ammo, 7.62x39 is cheap and there's plenty around. 9mm, 40, 45, 357, even if you don't own a gun with that caliber the price will go up and now you'll have a reason to by a gun of that caliber...
will we have a better society if everyone owns all these things in case of TEOTWAKI or if no one does
an open question
If it gets to that point society is worse. It may get better later, but at that point in time it's real bad.
Modern Americans live like house pets compared to their great grandparents. What is now known as survival prep was considered common sense a few generations ago.
It is almost never the thing you are worried about that gets you.
Forget the long lists. Carry spare cash and always wear practical clothes and sturdy footwear. Preferably shoes you can dance in.
well 'armed' is different than all the wealthy having bug out bags
and heinlen was a genius but a sci-fi writer - not exactly a quote from Winston Churchill or Ghandi...
You know, it is another great occurrence of US citizens requiring submission to one of their great point of propaganda.
Soldiers at war, all the protagonists, are a society themselves.
They are not polite.
Gangsters, cops, society on their own, they are not polite.
well Tim Geithner is the Sec of the Treas. Hows that for title dropping?
I for one don't believe a fucking goddamn word that falls out of his mouth.
Heinlien was a genius. And he supported himself and his family through his work, not as some career leech politician.
who you gonna follow?
eyes glazed over and dozed off........my end of world zombie plan.......turn on the gas and leave a candle burning and down a half gallon of Johnny Black and a down a dozen hits of acid
The survivors can have this world :)
I'm with you, dude. In my case, it's 4 boxes of Ring Dings in one sitting.
That's courteous of you to leave a box for those who find your body, because there's no way you're making it past three.
Can't wait to see 300 million people bug out at once.
That's FUNNY no matter who you are.
Indeed.... that is frightening to ponder.
One little rule. Live someplace hard to get to so you dont get mowed down.
Excellent thought. You don't want to be near Chicago or Newark if the shit goes down. You also do not want to be anywhere near an interstate leading from such places. Fuel tanks will govern how far the mobs get. There will be a "weeding" process so that the farther they travel, the fewer there will be.
One little rule. Live someplace hard to get to so you dont get mowed down.
That's a great idea for rich folks.................and people w/out families nearby(children), and if you need mdeical attention your SOL.
Meaning very few can afford your recomendation.
For those who think when the collapse comes troops would refuse to fire on US citizens
May 10 1994
300 active-duty Marines stationed at Twenty-Nine Palms receive a 46-question, multiple-choice survey. Given a hypothetical situation, more than a quarter of respondents indicate their willingness to "fire upon U.S. citizens who refuse or resist confiscation of firearms banned by the U.S. government." On the positive side, almost two-thirds recognize that the order would be patently unconstitutional.
These don't even need a comment

FBI Fears Bitcoin’s Popularity with Criminalshttp://www.washingtonpost.com/blogs/all-opinions-are-local/post/the-dron...
The drone helicopter over my backyard
I live maybe 20 miles as the crow flies from Fort Pickett, a Virginia National Guard base that is used by military and law enforcement agencies, including Navy SEALs, the Marines, the Air Force and Army Special Forces, Canadians, Secret Service, the FBI and Virginia State Police. It’s fairly common to hear the distinctive sounds of military aircraft flying about, such as the muffled roar of Blackhawks, the vibrating thunder of Sea Stallions and the less frequent “whup, whup” of the old, Vietnam-era Hueys.
So imagine my surprise a few weeks ago when I heard a chopper noise I couldn’t identify. I looked up and maybe 150 feet off the ground was a light grey helicopter that seemed to hover over my property. It was clearly marked “NAVY” and was the size of a ubiquitous civilian Sky Ranger but with one big difference: This aircraft had no cockpit and no pilot.

Germany has a population of about 80 million. (This does only take into account shots in connection with crimes. There were an additional 9000 shots on dangerous, sick and injured animals)."

Diageo Screw BrewDog
Kerry, Mark, Neil S and Neil T attended the award ceremony. We had heard that BrewDog were expected to do quite well in the ‘Bar Operator of the Year’ category and the members of the bar team were suitable excited to see if our hard work would be recognised by this most prestigious and illustrious award.
However we were not announced as winners of the award. This disappointment was further compounded when one of the judges (seated at our table) told us in disbelief ‘this simply cannot be, the independent judging panel voted for BrewDog as clear winners of the award’.
Events took a further twist when the people who got given the award refused to accept it as it clearly had ‘BrewDog’ engraved on the trophy as winners.
On Tuesday, 2 days after the award, I (James) took a phone call from Kenny Mitchell, Chairman of the BII in Scotland and Chairman of the Award Committee explaining the situation. To directly quote Kenny:
‘We are all ashamed and embarrassed about what happened. The awards have to be an independent process and BrewDog were the clear winner’
‘Diageo (the main sponsor) approached us at the start of the meal and said under no circumstances could the award be given to BrewDog. They said if this happened they would pull their sponsorship from all future BII events and their representatives would not present any of the awards on the evening.’
We were as gobsmacked as you by Diageo’s behaviour. We made the wrong decision under extreme pressure. We should have stuck to our guns and gave the award to BrewDog.‘
"Call of Duty" has done well to conditon our young to kill. Up to modern times, the US Army felt lucky if 20% would actually shoot at the enemy. In Viet Nam, it took approx 50,000 rounds for the average infantry kill. Snipers took 2.5 rounds average. Distance is your friend when you mean it.
Iraq and Stan? 95% pull the trigger. The military has learned operant conditioning to aquire target and shoot it down. They'll deal with the ramifications of the "Greatest Taboo" later.
Just curious; they frequently pulled the trigger in Vietnam too, they just weren't aiming. What was the ammo fired to body count in Iraq?
Col. Grossman, is that you?
"300 active-duty Marines stationed at Twenty-Nine Palms receive a 46-question, multiple-choice survey."
Who commissioned the survey? If it's the US govt then I'd start to be a bit (more) worried.
Twenty-Nine Palms- blech! Been there, done that! Fortunately it was only for a short time.
I used to go there and work on a survey crew to periodically repair the mock aircraft carrier runway used for training pilots. I remember how much I enjoyed the ride back to Camp Pendleton as the air actually contained some moisture once you got into the mountains.

nowhere to run, nowhere to hide.
Very interesting, well thought out....
I have to question this
"Complete the following courses in this order:
1. One half-day tactical folding knife class; $150.
2. 2-3 weekends of Tactical Pistol Courses; $1,000.
3. 2-3 weekends of Tactical Rifle Courses; $1,000.
4. One day of Self and Family Emergency Medical Aid/Trauma Kit Course; $150.
5. A series of several two-hour self-defense classes (not martial arts classes); $200.
6. Fulfillment of requirements for concealed handgun permit; $250."
Order should be 4 medical stuff, 5 Hand to hand, 1 Knife. The rest you don't need.
Guns are fine until you run out of ammo. Heinlien pointed out that if you give a person a gun they take risks they never would with a knife.
Matter of fact, I would keep knife as a useful survival tool but train to use weapans on hand. Spur of the moment stuff or things you wear. That way your focus isn't on one thing but adapting to your surroundings.
Most people can't kill, even trained people. Every year there are a number of Black Belts who manage to die no matter how well they claim to be trained.
If you train train full contact. Then you don't flinch, and you understand just how much force it takes to really hurt an opponent.
Finally, and this part is the most overlooked, USE YOUR FUCKING BRAIN! You don't need to win every battle, only survive. You don't need to look strong all the time, sometimes it's better to seem weak and insignificant. People underestimate you then.
Watch Monkeys and emulate their submission language.
That's what Ninja did, they played a role until they needed to be deadly.
Survival isn't a gunfight, but a battle of wits. If you don't think correctly you lose.
Ask any survivor.
Great advice. If we meet up, I'll introduce you to Gaston. He handles such problems for me. Only idiots take additional chances because they have a firearm. They won't be around very long. After some initital success because they are ambushers, they will push it too far.
It is not easy to kill. And far easier to shoot someone in the back where one does not have to look them in the eye. Never turn your back on an obvious threat.
"God did not make men equal, Colt did"
You can buy 1000 rds of rifle ammo (5.56mm) for under $300.....Buy enough ammo and don't run out....
Sorry, you are going to want the training to go with the weapons.
The training is to help you sink somewhere higher than fuck all to shit when things go badly for you.
95% of the people are going to do one of two things. Freeze with that Deer in lights look or lose it.
The freezes can be fleeced and the lose its become dangerous.

That's the hand to hand. A weapon is only an extension of the mind behind it, you said it yopurself.
If you can't kill someone with your barehand you can't with a weapon.
Knife hits the same spot as the hands to, so does a stick or a rock.
Everything starts with the body and what it is capable of.
YOU TUBE is invaluable with free info on how to protect yourself.
Use it.
Suggest you watch the Krav Maga videos..........first.
Amazingly easy to really disable an attacker, and I mean really totally disable them.Even if they are 2x's your size.
Points on the human body are all the same strength wise/damage prone,no matter how strong, or small you are.
With just one blow, I can make your arm useless, and with two, both arms useless, for a few weeks.
And I am not a young stud. But,knowing where and how is the most important tools one can learn,if they have no weapons.
PS: HH's advice on a quality blade is invaluable....................
Without ONE stab wound, there are at LEAST six spots on the body, that will kill an attacker in very short order.( and I mean, NO hope of survival.),learn where they are.
yeah but you run the risk of becoming the slave of the 1st dood witha gun to happen across you
savagegoose
Only if you are stupider than the man with the gun.
How many IQ points are you going to spot them. I do know that a lot of stupid people get caught real fast. Sometimes they have only killed a few people before they are caught.
If you are very attractive, 40 years old, a female, 120 pounds, and a successful trader with millions in the bank, then would that change your opinion?
Firearms are great equalizers when you have young men trying to kick in your door.

Chances are that that "attractiveness" is based on shit that can be readily removed. As mentioned, don't call attention to yourself: there's a bit more to the reason that nuns and Muslim women wear that hideous garb.
A question that this woman's husband (girlfriend/wife?) might ask is whether the gun could be used against him.
My wife has poor hearing. I have difficulties deciding whether she should be holding a gun should I enter the house unexpectedly (maybe I forgot something and had to return home, or maybe she was napping and isn't yet fully awake).
And then there's the issue of aim, and what surprise does to one's aim: hunters should have a pretty good idea about what I'm saying here. Any attacker/intruder is already executing his/her plan and therefore has the upper-hand. AND, the ASSUMPTION is that the attacker/intruder DOESN'T him/herself have a gun!
My FIRST and most effective protection selection is a DOG! Smaller target to shoot at. THEN, while the attacker/intruder is distracted, THEN fire away (one should be awake/more cognizant by this time).
I appreciate/respect the Second Amendment, but, really, wanting more people to be armed is a bit scary. Look around when you're out driving, everyone around you has had training. Without brains things just don't work as desired...
Seer.
Any attacker/intruder is already executing his/her plan and therefore has the upper-hand. AND, the ASSUMPTION is that the attacker/intruder DOESN'T him/herself have a gun!
This is where training comes in, if you are not going to be 100% totally proficient with what you have weapons wise then DO NOT buy it.
Any intruder doesn't have the upper hand,if you remain in condition one, at home, and when your out.Always expect the unexpected.
Gully Pointed this out.....your MINDSET is your first best defense.
Train your kids, and wife what to do, where to park, and not park, where to go, and not to go.( HAVE A PLAN).
Make it second nature, and the same goes for a fire.
Always, expect to be a potential victim, and know what you will do BEFOREHAND.
Also, Home alarms are cheap, less than $40.00 a month, and give you first alert.............
ALWAYS expect anyone breaking into your home to plan on taking your life when they know your there( esp at night).
NEVER move from your original position, wife into (bathtub), you flashlight off, and remain where you have decided to be,IN the room where you are is usually the best.(typically a bedroom)
And, use your mattress as a shield and cover. You have just increased your survival, and your families exponentially.
Make them come to you, and YOU have the upper hand, move around, with a light and your likely dead meat.
If you have small kids, children, show them where to go.
Since they will be in separate rooms(closet-under beds). This is where alarms come in..........you can have a telephone wired security sytem system disabled by a simple cut outside wire,(have your system set for satelite alert also).
PS: These points are NOT just for the SHTF,TEOTWAWKI scenarios, these are things you should be DOING ALREADY.
Refuse to be a victim.
hedgeless_horseman
Bullshit.
If someone is stupid enough to kick in your door they are either on drugs or you left signals to invite them in.
Anyone with half a brain can take what they want when they want.
A gun doesn't make anyone equal, neither does a stick.
ITS THE BRAIN WEILDING IT!
You can have all the security money can buy and someone dedicated and smart enogh will just waltz right through it. Ask the Queen of England, Steven Speilberg, or the Museaum that SCREAM was stolen from.
Those are the people you can't plan for.
Crimes of opportunity are just that, some stupid asshole makes a braindead move. Duh, third strikers.
You pull a gun and can't kill your enemy, your dead or worse. Simple enough, gun jams, you run out of ammo, you wound, lots of scenarios where you wind up dead.
Everybody thinks a gun makes them John Rambo. That's bullshit.
If you can't think like a survivor, you are dead. Pretty simple.
If you can't adapt to every changing situations, you are dead. Pretty simple.
I'm so fucking sick of this bullshit machismo the gun implies.
That kind of mindset is what causes people to die.
It's a burden, not a solution.
Here is a link to an example video, SYSTEMA Improvised weapons
http://www.russianmartialart.com/catalog/product_info.php?products_id=10...
See how personal items can turn into deadly weapons.
The aggressor in a self-defense situation will always seem to have some advantage over you, be that size or surprise or weapons or just plain 'killer instinct'. But how can you guarantee yourself to ALWAYS BE ARMED? In this absolutely jaw-dropping DVD, a master of Russian Systema, Vladimir Vasiliev, demonstrates the indescribable defensive effectiveness of everything you carry in daily life.
Keys, Cap, Belt, Jacket, Umbrella, Pencil and Book are such commonplace objects, yet they can be used to obliterate vicious knife attacks, holds, punches and gun threats.
The effortless, natural creativity demonstrated in this film will spill over far beyond martial arts training, into every area of your work and your life. You will NEVER see your surroundings or yourself in the same way ever again. Your mind will be permanently opened to the incredible power of EVERYTHING around you.
AS SHOCKING AS SOME SCENES MAY APPEAR, Vladimir shows how to use improvised weapons without excessive destruction to the attacker, while controlling him instantly and completely.
...
This DVD is tightly shot at Mr. Vasiliev’s School. The action is intimate, if we were there with him, as his attacker falls again and again, in undoubted pain. Each weapon's use is shot from multiple angles, at full speed and in slow motion, along with clear instruction, so as to leave no doubt in your mind as to both their effectiveness, as well as how to reproduce these effects in your own training.
Mr. Vasiliev warns us at the start that there is a disadvantage to taking a weapons in your hand, however improvised it might be. He declares that the use of a weapon usually demonstrates psychological weakness rather than strength, usually a kind of non-confidence in one's empty handed skills, a desperate move if you will. This can also accomplish the over-excitement of the attacker, there-by making them more prepared and which takes away from your own effectiveness. He points out that we can never truly know the extent to which the opponent intends to go, so why should we fuel their fire. He shows how to practice and gain experience, without it use of a weapon can be counter-productive. Therefore Mr. Vasiliev presents one of the key concepts of Systema, that is staying very calm and seeking to control the attacker rather than damage him.
The use of improvised weapons is a delight to watch and it begins with something as common as car keys. The advantage of keys is in their concealment as they are easily palmed. A key protruding through the fingers can rake the gripping fingers of an opponent or be used to create acute pain to vulnerable areas even through clothing. In a knife attack, keys are used to distract with a quick release from an underhand throw to the face, which reflexively releases the knife. Mr. Vasiliev’s demonstration of the key release from his open palm is a thing of beauty. The force of the release comes from the opposite hand striking the releasing arm back to release the keys forward. The releasing hand here only directs the keys to the face and reads as empty and accepting open hand, rather than a hand which says, “I’m ready to toss my keys in your face…”
Later Mr. Vasiliev explains how non-damaging pain is used not to excite the defenses of the opponent, but to “make them feel such pain they can only think about themselves, not about you!”. You can see this effect quite clearly as a result of all of the improvised weapons he uses. Finally, the opponent always seeks relief from pain through complete relaxation within themselves, which ultimately diffuses their aggression towards you. Keys are especially useful because they are hard to see, they naturally magnify pain and are effective even through clothing.
The next weapon is the ball cap, which as a soft peaceful looking object is inherently an unexpected weapon... Mr. Vasiliev carefully shows the parts of the cap, hard, soft, where the handles for the cap are and the ideas for the use of each part. To see the way in which he uses the cap as a projectile, a striking weapon, a protective surface against a knife, a hook against a gun, and for concealment of intention, is a thing to marvel at. You also see that something as hard as keys or as soft as the cap, can be used in very similar ways to accomplish the same disarming results.
Now the belt is shown to be one of the most versatile weapons commonly at hand, even when still wearing it! Mr. Vasiliev shows us how the inherent softness of the belt, say in comparison to a stick, enables many short or longer range circular and figure eight movements creating evasion and multiple striking opportunities in one smooth flow. There is one very cool manipulation of the belt that creates a double looped restraint which when pulled ties the opponent's hands together in a tight noose, which gets more uncomfortable as it tightens itself on the wrists when he tried to get out.
Then there is “Russian Street Fight Grip”, which is worth the price of the DVD by itself. Mr. Vasiliev with a quick snap of the soft end of the belt, which whips around his wrist and thumb in a lightening smooth motion, creates a grip solid enough that the belt might as well be part of the arm. Then he shows, should the belt become caught in someone’s clothing, how to release with a simple opening rotation of the hand. There are moments when you see the consummate professional in the details. The ease with which Mr. Vasiliev takes this grip in one flowing motion is just one. He does this with no more concentration than tying a shoe lace. His simple ease belies a depth of training which defines the difference between a professional and a civilian. His movements are not martial artistry, they are what minimally needs to be done and he does them with no more apparent intention than breathing in or breathing out. It is here where you see his vision of Systema in action. You’re not supposed to get excited. You’re not even supposed to see him do it. It is as if it were always there part of his hand. It makes you want to go out and buy a belt just like his in the hope that it might give you just a bit of an edge when it comes to such mastery of this improvised weapon.
Next is the jacket, which can act as camouflage, protection, restraint, projectile, and a whip. If they are wearing a jacket, you can use it against them like a fifth appendage, to pull them off balance when they least expect it. The softness of the jacket and its contours can be used to obscure your motions, while you entrap a knife, fist or extended hand. With each new weapon Mr. Vasiliev reminds that as with all Systema practices you are supposed to remain peaceful. If you tense up, the person in front of you will see the jacket as a weapon and start to work harder against you. Hence, the very first skill using the jacket is in the ability to take it off normally and with ease.
After the jacket, comes the usefulness of the umbrella, both compact and long versions. The advantage of the umbrella is that it seems so innocent and not the weapon of a tough guy, and even less so that of someone with self defense skills. Especially without the cover on, with soft material hanging, as if hastily compacted and clasped together after the last downpour. This is the way most guys pack up an umbrella, when they don’t want to carry one in the first place, but have to because you can’t show up to work wet. Looking kind of sloppy like this, the umbrella certainly doesn’t read as a weapon. There were two things I liked about this part. The first was the talk Mr. Vasiliev gives on the usefulness of unexpected pain and how to create it. You’ll have to buy the DVD to get to hear and see that set of instructions. Then there was the part that left me falling on the floor laughing replay after replay, as Mr. Vasiliev drop- kicks the umbrella into Nick's face, during a knife attack. For one thing, it’s like he drop-kicks his umbrella all the time, as it flies so precisely to the target. Secondly, you’ll get to see how effective a true surprise really is. It’s what I love about Systema. It never fails to make me see another way to do things.
For those scholars out there, the next two improvised weapons are for you. First there is the pen (or the pencil, for those with commitment issues) as well as the book. So there is something for everyone in this DVD! Now I think that there is a hidden gem in the midst of all the action and that is Mr. Vasiliev’s ease and economy of effort at all times. His manner does not change from one demonstration to the next. This is not because these demonstrations are staged. I can tell you from spending extensive time with him, he is really like this pretty much all of the time, whether in combat or conversation. He often can do both at the same time!
At the end of the DVD, he finishes as he began. He wants us to know that a weapon is used to create the least damage possible; to control another’s movement and that this is not a simple accomplishment, as the object reflexively shapes our intention and thereby displaces our calm and otherwise relaxed state. If you watch for it, you will see that in the midst of demonstrating so variations of use, from these common objects as improvised weapons, the one constant is Mr. Vasiliev’s calm. It is clear that staying calm is a central message underpinning all the great action packed applications of these improvised weapons. This makes this DVD as evocative to our psyche, as it is inspiring to our desire to develop more versatile defensive skills. I think you will find this one of the best DVD releases yet by Vladimir Vasiliev.
