Funny that Berlin used to be a quite 'cool' place ... dating back to when living there in the Berlin Wall era, got young Germans out of the draft, so it became a centre of the punk and alternative music scene ...
And this 'hip' element continued till just a few years ago, when cheap rents and a pro-freedom, 'new Germany', quasi-anarchist atmosphere still was in the streets there ...
But Merkelism and the German cruelty-to-Mediterranean-poor machine have destroyed all that image.
Same happened to Washington DC, long ago. When young, I visited the US in the 1970s, and back then, believe it or not, Washington DC was a 'cool' city too ...
It was mostly and proudly black, 'chocolate city' the locals proudly called it, and it also was a cheap and uncrowded, rebellious place to live, full of college students and nightclubs and parties ...
That was the lost America, a truly hopeful place, when even the US had no death penalty (moratorium imposed by honest humane US judges back then, 1967-77 ...)
Sigh.
