Obama - "End Football!"
Well, the Prez didn't really say that. His words on the topic of football:
"If I had a son, I'd have to think long and hard before I let him play football."
This is another big milestone in the football story. We have hundreds of colleges and university that have big football programs; there are thousands of high schools that have teams. And the Prez says he wouldn't let his child play because of the risks? That's a hell of a message to be sending a week before the Super Bowl.
The medical evidence that connects "normal" head hits in football to mental problems years later, is not in dispute any longer. All the schools have this information, so do most of the players and their parents. Now Obama is telling that large group of people, "You're nuts!"
I wouldn't be surprised if Obama's comments end up being more of a factor than the medical evidence. That would be quite a legacy...
This topic came up on ABC this morning. (Link) George Will had this to say about football:
We have parents today, in this bubble-wrapped childhood that we now have, when they put their child on a tricycle, they put a crash helmet on them. Are those parents really apt to let them play football? This is going to be a rebellion, like the president is speaking as a parent, from the bottom up, this game is just not suited to the human body.
Steve Inskeep, NPR, responded to Will with:
There's something deeply American about the violence of this sport.
I think they're both right. America has a violent streak, we need our gladiators (and our guns). Gladiators are supposed to die, right? Who doesn't like this stuff?

Imagine the damage inflicted by watching CNBC
They get paid hundreds of thousands at the league minimum to play a game for 15 weeks a year. Many get paid millions, 99% of them could barely work at McDonald's. Most would be dead or in jail if it wasn't for football.
If a player gets his brain caved in by another, who gives a shit. Hardly anyone that will actually make something of their life plays football today. The sport has become a ghetto charicature like the NBA. Take ten prisoners from any jail and throw them on an NBA court with the same jerseys. Most of the fans would never be able to tell the difference.
If it went away, I wouldn't care. But the brain dead fans who put more attention in Sports Center than anything that matters would just find some other empty garbage to tune to.
The key problem with high school football is that it encourages excellence instead of mediocrity. It keeps alive the obsolete concepts of success and failure. This goes against the grain of modern education philosophy.
Sorry, but you are full of shit. Excellence? Sure they strive to be good at a sport, but they are mediocre at best in the class room. Say what you want about the state of the class room but the ability to read, do basic algebra and a semblance of social and scientific understanding is beyond most of these so called excellence strivers.
Excellence... Wow.
About the only grounding in reality at schools. Where everyone is above average, and "no child is left behind". But fact is there are winners and losers. Kids needs to go into the world understanding that.
Pursuing excellence in one endeavor is better than remaining clueless about that concept for your entire life.

Soccer is already replacing football in many schools across the USA. A friend of mine recently went to his old high school's last game of the football season. To his horror he learned that, not only was it the last game of the season, but it was to be the last game forever. The school was dismantling the football program, and would convert the football field into a soccer field over the spring. Their brand new "official" soccer team would begin soon after. Reason? The Hispanic population {read; children of illegal 'grunts} of the school was so large, that it dwarfed that of the other kids {read; legal children}. There simply was not enough white/black children to participate, and the 'grunt children weren't interested. HOW'S THAT FOR ASSIMILATION! We are slowly being transformed into a third world dump.

While this MAYBE the case....it's probably more of a financial decision by the school.
School's budgets are strapped. Therefore, the sports that cost alot of money, like football, hockey (the equipment alone is expensive), are getting axed out.
Hell, to get a high school stadium built in Texas with all of the big excesses Texas demands with it, they had to borrow and adjust bonds:

1. reduce TOs in the first half from 3 to 1.

I'd never let my kids play football or ice hockey for that matter. But football on its own is devestating to many kids. Just look at the kids coming out of high school and the number that already have crushed bodies ... not to mention heads and brains. Our small school just in the last eyar has had a number of kids have serious concussions and one of those kids is still not right, and may never be again.... for what? A stupid game.

You have to engage and raise them - don't expect the schooling system or their peers to do it.
