The President Shoots??

Bruce Krasting's picture

I started shooting skeet when I was just a kid. In my late teens (and when my eyes were still good), I shot a number of perfect rounds (25 out 25). Competitive shooters made fun of me because I shot a "side-by-side" double barreled 12 gauge. Any serious skeet shooter uses the more accurate over-and-under shotgun. I blew them away just the same.

Years ago, the rules for skeet were that if one missed a hit at any station, one had the option to take another shot. If there were no misses (or one chose to defer the option) in the regular round, the shooter ended up with one shell left out of the box of 25.

At the 8th, and final position on the skeet field, there is (in theory) a shot where both the high and low house targets cross. To get the shot, you have to be crouched low to the ground, and leaning outside of the box. I used to hold onto my option for the last shot in the hope of the elusive double. It was showboating, but one time I hit it, and it was (almost) better than sex. (I was maybe 19 at the time)

skeetshoot

Anyway, I know a thing or two about skeet shooting. In this sport you have beginner shooters who don't really know what they are doing, you have amateurs that are "regular" shooters who take it seriously, and you have guys and gals that shoot 25 out of 25, again and again.

The following is a picture of a person who has not shot skeet before. This person doesn't know how to hold the gun properly. This person is going to get a big recoil in the arm that will hurt. No one has bothered to show this person how to hold a gun. This person has not been taught how to position the body to make a successful shot. This person has no chance of hitting a moving target. This person is not wearing the proper clothing for a skeet range (padded vest that has pockets for 25 shells). This person is pretending to shoot skeet. This is a photo-op:

NYT

I don't mean to make fun of the President's shooting skills. New shooters are always welcome on skeet ranges. I'm glad to see the Prez give this sport a shot, so to speak.

But the spin from the White House on this story is that Obama is banging away every weekend and he is an avid shooter. The president was quoted:

“I do it all the time”

The picture that the White House has offered up as "proof" that the president is a shooter is "fluff". This is an effort to spin things so that O looks like he is not an extremist on guns. The fact is, this picture tells us nothing, other than Obama is faking it. The WH picture is not of a guy who shoots skeet, it's a picture of a guy who likes to spin images.

Skeet shooters who do it "all the time" learn how to hold a gun and position their body. This is step number one in this (and most other) sports. These pictures are of people who have been on a range, and know the ABCs of shooting. Notice how they lean into the shot. (Also note that they are all shooting over-and-unders. It's like long handled putters - cheating, sort of, in my book...)

This is a picture of Kim Kardashian shooting skeet. This photo is also staged. Look how she is positioned and holding the gun. If Kim shoots this gun, she will get knocked on her ass, and she has no chance of hitting a thing. Maybe Kim and O should go shooting together. After all, it's just for show, right?

Bruce,

Not being a skeet shooter myself, one of the first things I noticed (besides him wanting a big bruise on his shoulder) was he's shooting horizontally, damned near eye level...maybe he's shooting "ground skeet"...some new version of skeet? ;-)

EXACTLY my first thought nmewn....he's looking and shooting straight ahead!!!  When one is shooting skeet (having tried it once myself) you have to look UP.

It's not Boehner, It's the Constitution.

Also, Navy Seal Chris Kyle was "murdered" yesterday at a range in Texas.

Hmmmm.

I have no doubt the purge is on.

This sure fits the narrative. PTSD and it supposedly happened at a range.

There's been a string of high-profile pro2's ("murdered") in the past month and a half.

Live fire drills over the skies of Miami and Houston...

Lock and load, bitchez.

It's coming.

He's definitely shooting at something close to the ground NOT launched into the air...maybe one of the many cabinet members fleeing his administration...lol.

Then there is his stance (as BK says) and how he's firing the shotgun...to say he shoots like a girl is an insult to women shooters everywhere ;-)

Most skeet/trap amateurs cannot acquire target quickly enough to shoot before the clay reaches the top of its arc. Instead, they wait too long, it drops and they make a horizontal miss.  IDK if that is what is happening here, but I can't really imagine Hussein being 'seasoned'.....

While I hardly believe in O's gun skills or the fact he's ever handled one but for a photo-op, firing as he is in the photo does not indicate he's not shooting clays.  We routinely shoot off a hill which drops down and using a 'wobbler' on the trap results in clays going straight out from our position and in fact dropping down over the length of the flight. If you look at some 'historic' Presidential gun pics, you'll in fact see the same stance and point of aim(which does make this look even more posed).

Well, we both know what this is (the pic).

Its a lame attempt to paint O'Barry as being "a sportsman". Kinda like Kerry walking into a sporting goods store somewhere and saying "Is this where I get my huntin license?"...lol. Its probably the only time he's ever fired a shotgun in his life and undoubtedly his last, after the corner of that buttstock cut into the web of his armpit attached to his skinny little arms...ported or not.

According to Google maps, the course is setup kinda like Bruce's description above, a semi circle with the ends of the circle being where the targets come out, from a fixed position. Judging by the pic and the access road and tree line behind him in the pic, he would have been on the southeastern side of the course. From what I understand the clays are shot crossing the course not going away from him.

I'm saying he shot one time at the course at Camp David, yes...but at nothing...no target...just one time for the photo.

lol...yes, all holding horizontal but none firing horizontal.

But what I find remarkable is no one has thought to ask what our skeet-shooting-constitutional-professor-teleprompter-reading-president' score is at his new found hobby.

I mean if ‘Yes, in fact, up at Camp David, we do skeet shooting all the time,’ seems like someone in our completely unbiased news media would have asked him who he shoots with and how he compares in scoring against them ;-)

Everything about Obama is fake and a lie. Just one more lie to add to the mountainous pile of lies.

Anywho, black gangsters don't like to use shotguns, they prefer cheap handgun knockoffs.

i.e., how many people killed in Chicago so far have been killed by over and under shotguns.

Tell Obama to get hold of a cheap Saturday Night Special, hold it sideways, put some nigga ganster clothes on, and then the photo-op would be moar than believable.

So - the girl at the top of your column of pictures is in the proper position to shoot??  Seems to me that she might get her ribs broken if she pulled the trigger in that position.

No, this gal is not in the final position for shooting.

You get into position by entering a "box" marked on the ground. When You're in the box, you load up, get the gun in a ready position - BUT - not on the shoulder. Then you say "Pull". The target is launched.

You have a
fraction of a second to get the gun up from the "ready" position, to on
the shoulder, and then fire. These are the rules of skeet.

The actual firing position is in #s 2, 3 and 4.

Number 1 looks like she would be fast. That gun is on the shoulder and fired in well under a second.

I'm thinking the lady in the pic looks pretty good (better than Kim K), but then, I'm a shooter....

PS
Some folks (ladies included) do shoot skeet with the gun off the
shoulder. (shooting from the hip) It's much harder, takes a lot of
practice. If you were in a tournament, you would not do this. It cuts
the odds.

It's a bit of showboating. Very impressive when done right.

Bruce - Lame Cherry blog pointed out that the gun was ported and also they used a real weak load in the shotgun shells.  I am not trying to pimp that blog but just giving credit.

That the gun was ported is odd. I have no experience with this. I assume it is to reduce recoil.

In the pic it's a big gun - 12 gauge. But if it was ported, it's a girlie gun.

Reduces recoil and allows a faster follow on shot. They only installed 1 choke in the top tube. The bottom tube, if the Kenyan moon cricket were actually shooting skeet, would suffer thread damage because its not installed. Oh, and that is way too much smoke.

The ports are a series of small holes along each side. This is a nice Browning over-under. He has no idea what he is doing.

Porting is done in order that muzzle pressure/gas is released upwards, tending to depress the barrel thereby stabilizing the firearm and mitigating some recoil.  Many modern skeet and trap model shot guns are ported and many older ones used to utilize Cutts compensators (Lyman Cutts compensator choke tubes) for the same effect.

Regardless, nobody has a shot that "level" on a skeet range.

Trap, perhaps, but not skeet.
Sorry.

As someone on another board said it’s a late term photo so buckshot and wad are gone. Exhaust gases to the right (port side recoil) have caused the muzzle to rotate about his rt hand and press the stock to his cheek. The Port side recoil gases look like they are pushing the muzzle down and so push the stock up on his shoulder. This is why photo doesn’t accurately reflect his initial shooting position.

Team Obama may want us to take the bait it’s fake. They love diversions. Fake or real, it’s politics in absurdistan.

NOTE: Bottom choke not installed. Smoke from ports is all wrong, should be coming from both sides. Angle of the shot is not how skeet is done. No evidence of recoil.

You guys are all totally missing the point of this photo-op.
Whether Obama mounts the gun correctly or not is immaterial.

Skeet and trap shooters are notoriously...sport shooters. They are, by and large, NOT devotees of gun rights. To many of them it is a sport, like golf, nothing more. This photo is an attempt to convince them that they will be "allowed" to keep their sporting shotguns, and continue to enjoy their sport, thus taking them out of the fight. This also reinforces the oft-repeated notion that guns are for sporting purposes, and nothing else.

Ask the typical sport skeet or trap shooter about self-defense, whether or not they own an AR or defensive handgun, or have a concealed carry permit, and they roll their eyes. When I show up at my outdoor club's clubhouse open-carrying, I get looks from the skeet shooters all the time. And they're not happy looks.

It's just more "divide and conquer", and your typical sport shotgunner is just lackadaisical enough to fall for it.

This is exactly what this is.  Usually you will get some Democrat who is running for office doing skeet or maybe pretending to use a shotgun on pheasant or whatever.

Skeet or trap shooter are country club gun owners and God bless em but don't try to decide what guns I can own.   The founding fathers were not thinking about skeet shooting or clay targets.
