I'm stuck listening to the BJTV gala while working feverishly mad trying to break some numbers.
I once tried to explain to my wife that the whole purpose of the TV gala was to further the propaganda ends of the state. I noted that 40 years ago you wouldn't find a single TV gala anywhere but maybe that evil capitalist outpost HK.
She reminded me to fuck off.
The TV Gala in HK is on and they are endeavoring to convince themselves that Hong Kong is the world class city of Asia.
I have a few short observations. HK certainly has lots of Banksters, five star French restaurants and high end luxury stores. However, culturally, the performing arts, museum and international cultural scene is way behind Tokyo, which is curious given the insular nature of the Japanese.
HK has improved slightly in this respect, but there are still many acts which go to Tokyo, Shanghai and Beijing and skip Hong Kong altogether. HK is also to expensive to nurture a truly Bohemian art scene.
As long as you can hang a 40 inch flat screen in your 5x10 foot, "cage" home, who really cares?

The squalor here, although unfortunate, is relatively tame compared to what can be found elsewhere, including in our own slums and deep South.
Current conditions for the indigent in HK have been exacerbated by fiat funny money, Bankster gentrification and Chinese iBillionaires.
That article is a god example of sensationalism. For example, they don't bother telling you that many many Chinese flats have the shower and toilet combined to save space. Sound horrible? Actually it makes sense when you consider that it makes cleaning the bathroom a very easy operation.
Roughly $350/mth USD gets you a small cubicle apartment in HK. What does that get you in NYC? Homeless with a cellphone account.
Cage homes are the trendy future living spaces for everyone, take a look at the UN's Agenda 21. When NYC allows landlords to convert to cage apartments, you might get a nice 100 sq. ft. rent controled cage for $350? Plus, Obamaphones are free, electronic communication is now a birthright.
