CIA and FBI Counter-Terrorism Officials: Cheney Lied About 9/11 Hijacker

George Washington's picture

Preface: Obama is worse.

Everyone knew that Iraq did not possess weapons of mass destruction (update here).

Dick Cheney admits that he lied about 9/11.

MSNBC recently noted that these two facts are intertwined:

Mark Rossini, was then an FBI counter-terrorism agent detailed to the CIA. He was assigned the task of evaluating a Czech intelligence report that Mohammed Atta, the lead 9/11 hijacker, had met with an Iraqi intelligence agent in Prague before the attack on the World Trade Towers.

Cheney repeatedly invoked the report as evidence of Iraqi involvement in 9/11. “It’s been pretty well confirmed that he [Atta] did go to Prague and he did meet with  a senior official of the Iraqi intelligence service in Czechoslovakia  last April,” Cheney said on Meet the Press on Dec. 9, 2001.

But the evidence used to support the claim–a supposed photograph of Atta in Prague the day of the alleged meeting—had already been debunked by Rossini. He analyzed the photo and immediately saw it was bogus: the picture of the Czech “Atta” looked nothing like the real terrorist. It was a conclusion he relayed up the chain, assuming he had put the matter to rest.

Then he heard Cheney endorsing the discredited report on national television. “I remember looking at the TV screen and saying, ‘What did I just hear?’ And I–first time in my life, I actually threw something at the television because I couldn’t believe what I just heard,” Rossini says.

Rossini gave MSNBC an example in an interview for the documentary Hubris:

Mohammed Atta was a sleight guy … barely 5’5 or 5’6, and skinny.  The guy in the photograph was muscular, thick, and had a neck like the size of two of my necks.  And I thought, “that’s not Mohammed Atta in the photograph!”  But I sent it to the lab anyway, knowing that would put it to rest.

McClatchy confirmed in 2009:

Former senior U.S. intelligence official familiar with the interrogation issue said that Cheney and former Defense Secretary Donald H. Rumsfeld demanded that the interrogators find evidence of al Qaida-Iraq collaboration…

For most of 2002 and into 2003, Cheney and Rumsfeld, especially, were also demanding proof of the links between al Qaida and Iraq that (former Iraqi exile leader Ahmed) Chalabi and others had told them were there.”

It was during this period that CIA interrogators waterboarded two alleged top al Qaida detainees repeatedly — Abu Zubaydah at least 83 times in August 2002 and Khalid Sheik Muhammed 183 times in March 2003 — according to a newly released Justice Department document…

When people kept coming up empty, they were told by Cheney’s and Rumsfeld’s people to push harder,” he continued.”Cheney’s and Rumsfeld’s people were told repeatedly, by CIA . . . and by others, that there wasn’t any reliable intelligence that pointed to operational ties between bin Laden and Saddam . . .

A former U.S. Army psychiatrist, Maj. Charles Burney, told Army investigators in 2006 that interrogators at the Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, detention facility were under “pressure” to produce evidence of ties between al Qaida and Iraq.

“While we were there a large part of the time we were focused on trying to establish a link between al Qaida and Iraq and we were not successful in establishing a link between al Qaida and Iraq,” Burney told staff of the Army Inspector General. “The more frustrated people got in not being able to establish that link . . . there was more and more pressure to resort to measures that might produce more immediate results.”

“I think it’s obvious that the administration was scrambling then to try to find a connection, a link (between al Qaida and Iraq),” [Senator] Levin said in a conference call with reporters. “They made out links where they didn’t exist.”

Levin recalled Cheney’s assertions that a senior Iraqi intelligence officer had met Mohammad Atta, the leader of the 9/11 hijackers, in the Czech Republic capital of Prague just months before the attacks on the World Trade Center and the Pentagon.

The FBI and CIA found that no such meeting occurred.

Postscript:  Indeed the entire torture program was implemented in an attempt to justify the Iraq war.  And the 9/11 Commission was set up with false torture testimony.  More background on the Iraq war.

Thanks for this article and all of your articles GW.  I always look forward to them.  Perhaps some of the more interesting stories about the boxcutter-carrying-arabs we are told did 9/11:

1  The "mastermind" currently in custody, khalid sheikh mohd, graduated from a US university and grew up in Pakistan, so he would be extremely fluent in English (!!) but the guy we have in custody now (Ron Jeremy lookalike) always needs a translator and has never spoken any English.  Obviously a mentally feeble stooge picked up and held before the people as the "mastermind" but we've never heard his speak.  We were supposed to have a trial of this "mastermind" in New York but the media went berzerk saying we can't allow him a trial because crazy muslims will start blowing up stuff in New York.  And the American people apparently bought this!  No trial for the mastermind, we can't hear him speak (because the whole story is false to begin with).  Christopher Bollyn called a professor who taught the real KSM in USA, and that prof said he doesn't recognize the guy in custody.

2 Many of the people who are on the list of hijackers, are still alive! The still-living-hijackers said that someone broke into their apartment while they were living in USA and stole their passports. No it's not a joke.  All proven but the American people don't want to hear it...

3 Hani Hanjour was a slight wimp of a man but we are told he took control of a plane piloted by ultra-fit, gym-addict American military badass veteran (and trained in hand combat fighting) named Burlingame, a huge man that would have NEVER given up his plane to a 5'4" waif carrhing a boxcutter.

The list goes on and on.

So do these fucking clowns think the can pull off another 9-11?  I think there is enough evidence that people are awakening to their BS and they are debating it.

Sadly at the end of the day I think greedy thoughts of world domination and riches will be too tempting for them.

Soooooooooo....what is the bottom line?  Did Al Qaida pull off destroying the World Trade Center and killing 3000 people or didn't they?  Given the way Obama's cult celebrates the dispatch of Osama Bin Laden to the nether world, you can safely say Al Qaida did it.  So what the point of this blog entry?  Did "George Washington" feel like the cult is becoming lacksadaisical, so he decided to blow his dog whistle?

cheney's forefathers belong the huguenot sect, which promoted communism in the 17th century. the sect masacered and plundered villages and shared everything including women.

Cheney is a knob, but to use a 'sins of our fathers' as a debate tool....  no need to go there.

He needs to "get over it". As Bob Segar says, Ain't nothin you can do....

That video still frame picture was doctored in respect to the time stamp. It's impossible for Atta to be in Maine the morning of 9/11. Reasearch into it and you may agree with my findings.

Hey that Dick just bought another house, in Mclean Virginia. He doesn't give a phuck about you, or what you think. He's mean in McClean. So what? What are phuckers gonna do about it?

183 times eh?

They actually kept count?

Sick bastards.

waterboarded 183 times to say something that cheyney wanted to hear so he could authorize the killing of a further 1 million iraqis on top of the 4 million that sadam and iran had killed between them.

sounds like a standard foreign policy initiative

don't know why he didn't just fly wmd into iraq and get the back up squad to confirm that wmd was on iraqi soil...with pictures of ocurse

The only punishment for the Cheneys and Rumsfelds of this world is to force them to live out their remaining years in Iraq or Afghanistan and to have any future invasions predicated on the children or grandchildren of the congressmen serving in the army in the country which is being invaded.

Augustus's picture

Interesting that this FBI agent reports that he "sent it up the chain."

So what is the evidence that Geo Wash uses to establish that the chain actually delivered the analysis to Cheney?

Maybe Geo is back to making stuff up, again.

And maybe he should check again on that "We all knew that Saddam Hussein did not possess weapons of mass destruction."  In fact the Israeli government issued gas masks to citizens and required them to carry the masks with them.  If everyone knew the claim was bogus, why did no one tell the Israeli government?

Money 4 Nothing's picture

The Israel Government was helping to foment a new global war. There is no daylight between Neo-Cons and Zionists.

You mean the same people who started selling the lie of "six million dead innocent jews" in the early 20th C?  Those filthy, disgusting liars?  The descendants of the Jews kicked out of Spain centuries prior for being so hated and treating the "goyim" like crap?

You mean the people who live by the high religious vs. "Even the best of the gentiles deserve only death?"

You mean the men who's daily prayer is, "Thank you g_d I'm not a slave, nor a gentile, nor a woman?"

You mean the same Rabbis who measure red spots on women's underwear, command them the day to get pregnant, and if the woman disobeys the god forsaken Rabbi tells her she and her baby die in childbirth.....and then charge the woman for the Rabbi's sage loving advice?

The same Rabbis who command the death penalty for anyone reading the Talmud who does not obey the Talmud?

The US invaded Iraq for one reason and one reason only....the Dollar. Saddam wanted to start pegging their oil to the Euro. It's the same reason why Gaddafi was set up to be killed....he wanted the Arab nations to come up with their own currency backed by gold. That would kill the US economy and send gas prices through the roof here.....killing any re-election campaign for the criminals in Washington.

Joseph Jones's picture

The Rabbis hate Islam because Islam, contrary to so-called Westernized Churchianity, Islam teaches against and absolutely forbids usury.

How do you think Jews feel about that?

No usury. Sharia calls it a fee. Problem solved and Big Mo is happy.

Are you really that naive?

Nice job GW. This story is news to me.

As far as I'm concerned, Dick Cheney is my QED that there is no God, and therefore no Justice in this world. The innocent get slaughtered and the evil, evil, FUCKING EVIL bastards like Cheney get secret service protection for the rest of their (in Cheney's case, completely unnatural) lives.

leftcoastfool's picture

I'd agree that we won't see some Old Testament style God coming down to Earth to smite the evil doers, and most Hindu scholars think the current Kali Yuga won't end for between hundreds and hundreds of thousands of years so we can't expect to see Kalkin (the final avatar of Vishnu) come and clean up the mess in our lifetimes.  We can only hope that the Law of Karma will work its magic with Cheney and his ilk in their next incarnations and strive to make the world a better place for ourselves and our loved ones...

geekgrrl's picture

LOL. Dude, if there are humans running around on this planet in a hundred years, it would be a miracle. The last great extinction at the end of the Permian took everything larger than a small shrew, around the size of a rat. It's all over. We're just enjoying the band on the deck of the Titantic. Enjoy it while it lasts.

TNTARG's picture

This dialectic here is so important. Because the guys that tortured, killed, took babies from their tortured mothers, threw people from planes directly to the sea in Argentina, were trained and protected by the US/EU corporate governments.

Because we're all the same victims, because we in Argentina, you in the US, people in Europe, iraqis, afghans, people of Chile, milions around the World, your soldiers, we're all victims of these corporate élite, a barbarian bunch of mad people with no soul, very primitive ones. A subspecie.

We must just walk away from them. Be informed. Spread. Not to allow further invasions as they want to do in Siria, even Iran.

We suffer their wars, their lies, their crisis, we eat their shit. The're against humanity, no matter which country are we living in. Time is coming for us to reject them.

We could have lives that worth.

ronaldawg's picture

Ms. Kircher you don't do shit - you are in Argentina - a country at the bottom of the world, far away.  Where are you going to "walk away" to?

Suffer their wars?  When was Argentina in a war - Falkland Islands - and you are trying stir the pot again?  HOW ABOUT NO WAR IN THE FALKLANDS FOR OIL, Honey?

Cause we all know that NO ONE in South America ever tortured, killed, took babies from their tortured mothers in the past 100-200 years did it without US/EU collusion.

I think you are the official proproganda arm of the Argentine gov't - sort of a female Chavez.

TNTARG's picture

Are you insane?

On the other hand, some guy that says Argentina is "in the bottom of the World"... You must know something I don't.

P.S.: The "Flakland War" wasn't really a war. It was a dictatorship trying to keep it going.

We have no Army to fight wars and if you read me carefully, You'll understand I'm far for willing to fight any war for people that don't give a shit for any of us.

Hey Washington,

Write something meaningful, for a change, or stop posing as a "contributor."

Because one thing you are not doing is contributing.

The Heart's picture

Sholuda known that after that carkasaurous shot his friend in the face and then paid him off to not prosecute, he was no ordinary hombre to mess around with.

Take to your heart of hearts and KNOW THIS; one of the major biggest reasons we are seeing things like the bankster empire being exposed as the criminals they are in Cyprus, is because enough is enough. These criminals have had their way for too long. The whole SPLC/AIPAC/JDL mantra of the Homeland gestapo no-security war on terror so only they can profit, is the biggest farce that has ever been swallowed by the world's people. Justice should have already had that mess tried, and executed by now.

Talk about terror. How about these banksters even threatening to steal peoples money causing great mental harm, and then closing the banks to a major population, as an ACT OF TERROR? Does that count in the babylonia agenda of, war on terror?

Forget it. Please don't answer the question. It will cost another ka-trillion dollors just for the paperwork.

The invasion of Iraq was a foolish mistake.  But let's now dwell on it - let's learn from it and try minimize the number of foolish mistakes made as we move ahead.

Prudence. Fortitudue. Discipline.

Geruda's picture

The words you are having are making a trivial sounding of what it is being.  It is not being a foolish mistake.  A foolish mistake is putting salt on the cereal your are eating instead of putting sugar where you are meaning to be be eating from.  The invasion of the Iraqis was a horrible atrocity by an evilness of so much bad that millions of people will be having suffering for doing for the memory of our whole lives and many times as many years as after.   The ugliest human who is now on the planet was him who was lying about shooting his man in the face because of the same wickedly stupid behavior he was always having.  We should not only be having a dwelling about such terrible things we were letting to be happening we should be making all who are watching know that evil men should be having a punishment more terrible than they could ever think would be happening to them.

Lordflin's picture

Good point... Having not learned from Nam, Korea, and all the other wars this nation has financed for the banking interests, both in terms of blood and treasure, let us learn our lesson in Iraq.

And what lesson would that be? Well... It seems we do not need to travel half way around the globe to find the enemy.

The numbers for total deaths and Iraqi civilian deaths represent the lower end of estimated deaths caused by the Iraq war. We would like to acknowledge that other studies, such as those carried out by the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health and the Iraq Family Health Survey, estimate much higher civilian deaths as a result of the war.

  • Total deaths: Between 110,663 and 119,380
  • Coalition deaths: 4,803
  • U.S. deaths: 4,484
  • U.S. wounded: 32,200
  • U.S. deaths as a percentage of coalition deaths: 93.37 percent
  • Iraqi Security Force, or ISF, deaths: At least 10,125
  • Total coalition and ISF deaths: At least 14,926
  • Iraqi civilian deaths: Between 103,674 and 113,265
  • Non-Iraqi contractor deaths: At least 463
  • Internally displaced persons: 1.24 million
  • Refugees: More than 1.6 million
Financial costs
  • Cost of Operation Iraqi Freedom: $806 billion
  • Projected total cost of veterans’ health care and disability: $422 billion to $717 billion.

Sure, let's not dwell on the cost of 4000 dead and 30,000+ wounded that we'll be dealing with for decades.

Foolish mistake my ass!  Rumsfeld, Cheney, Bush and the Mossad brought down the Trade Towers -- blamed Iraq so to seize their oil and gold.

False Flag, False Flag, False Flag!  Don't you get it?

Longtermnotreally's picture

So many people still refuse to recognise this simple fact, with evidence in peer reviewed journals such as the paper on nano-thermite by Prof Niels Harrit.

This will make for an interesting sociological study in a decade or two, unless of course the Cheneys, Rumsfelds and Obamas of this world get their way and then we're really fucked.
