I Go For 2nd Win On CNBC Stock Challenge Causing TROUBLE, Fighting "Experts" & Shock Most Using The Same Stock - Google!

Reggie Middleton's picture

I appeared on CNBC Friday to go for my 2nd win in their Stock Draft Challenge. Of course, I started trouble. I took the liberty of compiling  snippets from the last contest, the results and the most recent airing last Friday - along with some interesting notes. Pay attention to the argument that ensued when discussing Google's business model towards the middle of the video.

I will release fresh, updated Google research that incorporates projections for Google Glass and Google X Phone, as well as this quarter's most recent earnings update. In the meantime, refresh your collective memories with the last Google update published, see Google's Q4, 2012: This Looks To Be The Leader Of The New Distributed Information Paradigm.

Hmm.  GOOG or BBRY?  Let's see.  Google has a wonderful business - brilliant and diverse - but as one of the CNBC experts stated - not a lot of experience in manufacturing (yes Reggie, they did buy Motorola).  And those nifty glasses might take off.  In the other corner we have Research In Motion with its new Z10 phone that a few folks are raving about (notably Karl Denninger).  Here is my completely stupid call on this.  BBRY will outperform GOOG for the remainder of 2013.  Here's why.  It has nothing to do with business model, P/I ratios, or the like - its marketing.  GOOG has been great to its investors.  Old investors will stick with GOOG because of their historical profits.  But old investors don't move the stock price, new investors do.  What does GOOG have to attract new investors, what's on its horizon.  Nifty computerized glasses.  Reggie could be right, sales could take off and take the company to new heights.  But, they could also be a flop.  Did you notice the foxy host saying she wouldn't wear them.  There's your enemy Reggie, not the other team.  The consumer is the scorekeeper in this game and without consumers, you lose.  So, how is BBRY's Z10 doing?  Not nearly so bad - and by some accounts, for the truly tech-savvy - it does more and better than most if not all smartphones.

Reggie - a suggestion.  Get a Z10.  Try to like it.  Check out Denninger's touts about the product.  You may wish to diversify, just a bit.

I would like to see Reggie pick some other stocks besides a few tech giants.

Does he cover any other stocks/sectors? Or is his sweet spot just a couple of companies?  I guess it doesnt matter if you make the returns- just nice to see a man with range.

Reggie, I think you're a little too bullish on Glass Reggie, but I see what you're saying.

The AR features of Glass combined with it's form factor could make it a game changer.  Glass is the next step in the man/machine interface, reminds me of the anime Ghost in the Shell.  If Google could give Glass a 3G cell connection with access to Google Play it could be nice money maker.  Time will tell...

Who the hell was that guy saying Google doesn't make a product???

Srsly...

If GOOG's business model is online advertising and Glass is the future of online, then presumably Glass will be showing you advertisements. Gack.

seems to me that google glass would have a big usage from military applications, which could be one of the largest drivers for it.  After reading this site and many others for years i am torn.  If we have reached peak consumption from american consumers and are looking at a reset of the world financial system within the next five years or so, how does google figure they will be able to sell this product to the masses?  I see the value of it, but i don't understand how it will make financial sense, apple made its run during the last grasp of a great financial bubble, where does it go from here?

Does Google Glass do anything other than take videos from your face? A smartphone can do everything else, you can even give speech commands to it as well. Plus a smart phone doesn't look bad whereas Google Glasses don't look very attractive.

I did, which is why I don't see the value in Glass once it finally releases. At $500 a pop it seems to be too niche. I can buy a Google Nexus 4 at $299 and do the same things glass can, I really don't take dozens of pictures and videos of things so perhaps you need to be a social butterfly to want something like this. Only nice thing about it is it's always in front of you so you can do things on the fly with it and still pay attention to what is going on around you.

Mr. Middleton is correct that most people do not understand Google's business model.  I was one of those people once and I stayed away from Google at a time it would have been best to jump in.   My bad.

15 years ago carrying around a pocket calculator decreased your reproductive fitness to zero because nobody liked dweebs. Today it's cool to walk around talking to yourself holding a gizmo in your hand. Half my relatives work for GOOG and listening to them talk in the last few months has convinced me that the company knows how to market this product. If the technology works Reggie will be right. Time will tell, I have a siri phone and never use the feature because my first tries came up with nothing but frustration. Bet you Reggie will get one of the first Glass units and will be seen everywhere using it.

Reggie you can't be right on your predictions, Paul Krugman says he's been right on all his predictions, especially the ones where he rewrites history.
