I really don't much about copyright law (except what I've read by Lessig) but wouldn't your work be covered under parody/satire fair use?
I understand this from their persepective. They run a business and they can't get bogged down in all kinds of litigation expense. The way the case law is written, the burden of proof in a fair use case is on the artist. How many artists can afford to appeal a "fair use" case?
As it happens, I am school friends with a very heavy hitting copyright lawyer and I have said nothing to him about what I do. But if push ever comes to shove, I will. And he is a human being if you get my drift.
In my opinion the government saying you violate a copyright by doing a parody of their acronym or logo is a classic violation of the First Amendment.
