First Congressman Allowed to Read Secret Treaty Says “This ... Hands The Sovereignty of Our Country Over to Corporate Interests”

George Washington's picture

We reported last year:

Democratic Senator Wyden – the head of the committee which is supposed to oversee it – is so furious about the lack of access that he has introduced legislation to force disclosure.

Republican House Oversight Committee Chairman Darrell Issa is so upset by it that he has leaked a document on his website to show what’s going on.

What is everyone so furious about?

An international treaty being negotiated in secret which would not only crack down on Internet privacy much more than SOPA or ACTA, but would actually destroy the sovereignty of the U.S. and all other signatories.

It is called the Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP).

Wyden is the chairman of the trade committee in the Senate … the committee which is supposed to have jurisdiction over the TPP.

Wyden is also on the Senate Intelligence Committee, and so he and his staff have high security clearances and are normally able to look at classified documents.

And yet Wyden and his staff have been denied access to the TPP’s text.

Indeed, the decision to keep the text of TPP secret was itself classified as secret:

(I have also received a tip from a credible inside source that TPP contains provisions which would severely harm America’s national security. Specifically, like some previous, ill-conceived treaties, TPP would allow foreign companies to buy sensitive American assets which could subject us to terror attacks or economic blackmail.)

Yesterday, Congressman Alan Grayson (who knows how to read legislation … he was a successful lawyer before he was elected to Congress, and has written and co-sponsored numerous bills himself including the bill to audit the Federal Reserve and – most recently – the “Mind Your Own Business Act” to stop NSA spying) announced that he had been allowed to read the text of TPP – and that it is  an anti-American power grab by big corporations:

Last month, 10,000 of us submitted comments to the United States Trade Representative (USTR), in which we objected to new so-called free trade agreements. We asked that the government not sell out our democracy to corporate interests.

Because of this pressure, the USTR  finally let a member of Congress – little ole me, Alan Grayson [anyone who's seen Grayson in action knows that he is formidable] – actually see the text of the Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP). The TPP is a large, secret trade agreement that is being negotiated with many countries in East Asia and South America.

The TPP is nicknamed “NAFTA on steroids.”  Now that I’ve read it, I can see why. I can’t tell you what’s in the agreement, because the U.S. Trade Representative calls it classified. But I can tell you two things about it.

1)    There is no national security purpose in keeping this text secret.

2)    This agreement hands the sovereignty of our country over to corporate interests.

3)    What they can’t afford to tell the American public is that [the rest of this sentence is classified].

***

I will be fighting this agreement with everything I’ve got. And I know you’ll be there every step of the way.

***

Courage,

Congressman Alan Grayson

Grayson also noted:

It is ironic in a way that the government thinks it's alright to have a record of every single call that an American makes, but not alright for an American citizen to know what sovereign powers the government is negotiating away.

***

Having seen what I’ve seen, I would characterize this as a gross abrogation of American sovereignty. And I would further characterize it as a punch in the face to the middle class of America. I think that’s fair to say from what I’ve seen so far. But I’m not allowed to tell you why!

Remember that one of the best definitions of fascism – the one used by Mussolini – is the “merger of state and corporate power”. Our nation has been moving in that direction for a number of years, where government and giant corporations are becoming more and more intertwined in a malignant, symbiotic relationship.   TPP would be the nail in the coffin for free market economics and democracy.

Note to progressives who support public banking: This is a key battle.

Note to those who oppose to what they call “one world government” or a “new world order”: This is the big fight.

History

The CFR dates back to 1921, and in 1996 published its history, available on its website.

The membership of the CFR includes past Presidents, Ambassadors, Secretaries of State, Wall Street investors, international bankers, foundation executives, think tank executives, lobbyist lawyers, NATO and Pentagon military leaders, wealthy industrialists, journalists, media owners and executives, university presidents and key professors, select Congressmen, Supreme Court Justices, Federal Judges, wealthy entrepreneurs, and as many as ten 9-11 Commission Members. [1] [2]

Due perhaps more to its origins, associations, and history, than to its current composition and activities, the CFR does have a reputation as one of the "triumvirate of elite organizations" together with the Bilderberg and the Trilateral Commission. Elitism doesn't necessarily preclude the ability to provide unbiased and useful service however. [3]

Carroll Quigley, Professor of History at Georgetown University, stated, "The Council of Foreign Relations is the American Branch of a society which originated in England and believes national boundaries should be obliterated and one-world rule established." [4]

They hold regular private meetings including members, and very select guests. Occasionally they will hold a public meeting, and invite the open press (including C-SPAN). The image of the CFR as a closed-shop bi-partisan discussion forum for the foreign policy establishment has fuelled criticism that the organisation and its members are controlling world policy and events.

In 1938 the Council created numerous Committees on Foreign Relations throughout the county, in 1995 the Committees became a separate organization under the umbrella of the American Committees on Foreign Relations in Washington D.C.

and then for him to tell us in histrionic tones.. yet... play Ive got a secret at the same time?  cheesy carnival tricks..

Ive applauded Grayson work in general in the past..but.. even a devoted conspiracy follower like myself... have to say this reeks.. of showmanship..

More stink from the shit carcass of the US government.

What people need to understand is that NDAA, etc., and this are signs that the pols and crats and their bankster and elite masters know the jig is up and are now making preparations for when the music stops.

They are making plans to deal with the "excess," and pissed-off, population while carving up the country into sellable chunks to be sold to the highest bidder.

The sheeple better wakeup soon.

The Four Rs:

Rejection--No pay, no obey.

Revolution--They're preparing for it, you should be as well. See NDAA 2012/2013/2014, ect.

Retribution--We will know who and what these sociopaths are guilty of, and is their really any place for the likes of them in a restored Constitutional and civil society?!

Restoration--Restore the Constitutional republic.

In the twentieth century probably in excess of 100 million innocents. This time, with the advent of much more efficient military tools, that awful record will doubtlessly be broken.

America was protected by two oceans then and, except for her soldiers, went largely unscathed. Those new military tools will remove much of that protection in the future conflicts.

All other large and western governments are part of the scam.  They're not going to themselves.  Everyone who believes in fictitious entities supports the predators, and only individuals do not.

So the only possible battle in the end is... individual producers versus predators DBA government, corporation, central-bank, other organization.

imo, the TPP secret is some we're-out-of-money maneuver that they can't let the sheeples front run.

I can say they [Hitlary] pushed this thing pretty hard in Asia and mostly got laughed out of town.  I think it was Phnom Phen.

Members of the TPP block were not supposed to trade with China.  The press here described as an attempt to firewall China.   Big surprise, most Asian nations were not interested.  Now, after the anti-Japanese riots in China, Japan wants in ... because ... they can't trade with China anyhow.

I wonder how much of the kimona they have to show when they negotiate?

If someone up in the chain of command in China for example knows what our government has in store for us, could you be so kind as to enlighten us about what's to go down??

That the TPP treaty is being negotiated in secret does not instill confidence (to say the least), but the treaty would need to be ratified by congress, at which point it must become non-secret, right?

Foreign ownership of important assets sounds like a risk of foreign control fraud, but consider that it also means US money can relocate to tax haven combinations and still retain control.

Remember that one of the best definitions of fascism – the one used by Mussolini – is the “merger of state and corporate power”.

The meaning of corporation (corporazione, in Italian; corporação, in Portuguese), here, isn't the same as in English language/law - see here, here and here.

In Portugal, there was actually a Corporative Chamber (Câmara Corporativa), which run from 1935 to 1974, during the 1933-1974 fascist Estado Novo dictatorship.

Fascism intends to reign in on all aspects of social, political, economical (Law of Industrial Conditioning, in Portugal, which required govermental authorization to open new factories, even the installation or replacement of machinery, and which was only phased out towards the 70s), religious and personal life (taxing celibacy, in Italy, for instance).

This is something else - the absolute opposite, to be exact; it's giving private companies nearly absolute control of the whole society, putting them above and beyond the reach of law - and obviously much, much worse.

Wed, 06/19/2013 - 22:24 | 3673944 Ckierst1
Ckierst1's picture

They aren't really the opposite, they are actually the same thing as applied.  It is still the tyrannical socialist control of the population of a nation by an elitist government-corporate regime.  The private companies can't do all this shit without the mantle of governance, to include the bureaucracy, protecting them, a symbiosis.

A prophetic interview with Sir James Goldsmith in 1994 Pt1

Sir James Michael "Jimmy" Goldsmith (26 February 1933 18 July 1997) was an Anglo-French financier. Towards the end of his life, he became a magazine publisher and a politician. In 1994, he was elected to represent France as a Member of the European Parliament and he subsequently founded the short-lived eurosceptic Referendum Party in Britain.
In this interview, Sir Goldsmith discusses the ramifications of free-trade agreements that were about to take place in 1994 (GATT), as you can retrospectively see, he correctly predicted many of the things that happened after that.
