Government Has Shut Down 18 Times Since 1976

George Washington's picture

NPR points out:

Since a new process was put into place in 1976, the U.S. government has shut down 17 times [Update: Make that 18]. Presidents Jimmy Carter and Ronald Reagan each dealt with six shutdowns during their terms in office, lasting anywhere from one day to 2 1/2 weeks.

The last actual shutdown came in 1996 ….  The last shutdown lasted three weeks ….

This is not to say that there a shutdown would have no effect … but it is not the end-of-the-world scenario which some would paint it to be.

Forget Partisan Rhetoric … The Threatened Government Shutdown Is Caused By Bad Policy By BOTH PARTIES

Isn't it true that in all cases of government shutdown, the government employees were later quietly paid for the time they were furlowed (i.e. paid for doing even less than they usually do)?

Reagan wanted to fire ALL the public employees, but had to stop at the Air Traffic Controllers. the less than obvious conclusion is that Obama wants to privatize government, at least as much as Reagan did, otherwise why did he hold Bernanke's hand for six years? in order to privatize government you first must bankrupt the existing system. Bush wanted to put SSN under Wall Street control, which is the perfect marriage of government and private enterprise, but the private wealth in thsi country was in too many hands. to make it happen they needed to A) bankrupt the governent through debt policies and tax holidays for corporations, and B) put the remaining wealth left in this country into the hands of a few powerful individuals and institutions, who would then collude against that government (much as they did in 2008, dress rehearsal) Goldman could take this stock market to zero and make money doing it, and they would own the deed to 200 Penn Ave. like the lead up to the Iraq war, the economy has become a no-fly zone for the peoples government. now the only thing we have left is a few noisy house members. i am waiting for the day they pull the trigger, and the government of Goldman emerges to claim their prize. will it a better or a worse country than the one we know?

"Reagan wanted to fire ALL the public employees, but had to stop at the Air Traffic Controllers." WTF ?????

Reagan told the Air Traffic Controllers who were on strike, to get back to work...Those that did not return WERE fired and replaced with military controllers until they could train replacements...

"the less than obvious conclusion is that Obama wants to privatize government,"

he does not want to privatize shit...he wants only public employees...

It's not a country. It's a criminal enterprise.

Raygun was an actor, and a poor one at that. He was afraid to act as President after Hinckley shot him 3 months into his first term. GHW Bush was the acting president of the criminal enterprise from then on. The historical record is pretty clear about that.

Raygun was an actor, and a poor one at that....perhaps, but he was also a two term governor of California before becoming president....

A pretty successful governor at that

I greatly appreciate this blog post, and to further disseminate what is really taking place . . . .

Putting the Squeeze on the Empire

During the final gasps of the American Empire, the super rich, through their banks and banksters, will squeeze any and all "profits" by any means possible.

With the shutting down of the American government, massive amounts of high frequency trading (HFT) on Treasury bills (T-bills) has been taking place across the global financial exchanges.

This has nothing whatsoever to do with the Affordable Care Act (ACA, also referred to as ObamaCare), this is all about the Benjamins, all about the money, the greedheads and their super Ponzi of Ponzis!

And within their gigantic shorting of T-bills, they undertake further financial manipulation by going long --- within microsecond timeframes --- each time a bit of positive news surfaces, which they have foreknowledge of --- then once again going short!

Just more Kabuki theater to steal from the citizenry, enrich themselves, and destroy the future.

Unfortunately, we'll never hear the actual news, the truth, from Rupert Murdoch's Foxtards, or CNN's Carol "hot panties" Costello, or Anderson "I worked at the CIA" Cooper, or Brian "former Pentagon PR guy and still on their payroll" Williams, or Rachel "I heart the CFR" Maddow --- no, there is zero news product in America, only the NSA, or National Storytelling Association.

Remember, the super rich shelter much of their wealth within foundations, foundations which are the primary investors in hedge funds, hedge funds which are leading this global speculation, along with the top banks' proprietary trading desks!

Do you copy, over?

Negative further transmission. . . .

So 2.5 or 3 weeks is "on the table" ?  Can we vote for 3 weeks ?  Just sayin.  It would make the most sense and clean up a lot of loose ends.  When we get back there would be a clean slate and no agenda(s).  No ceiling and no floor, no walls, and no fiat.

"Government Shutdown" is a deceptive misrepresentation.

Unfortunately, such misrepresentation is to the advantage of our government 'leaders' and their sponsors.

Actually it's the government's 'credit card' which has reached its limit.

So the government theoretically can't 'borrow' any more to pay current expenses.

However, the government still has an income (taxes) to pay some of its current expenses.

Given the self-serving priorities of TPTB, the military/police/spy apparatus will be the last to be cut. Public services, public parks etc. will be the first to be cut.

Whether the government ever should have, or should have had to, "borrow" to pay current expenses is the point to consider.

If it extends to 3 weeks...it is automatic and complete to the bedrock zero account bankrupt Jubilee.  It would simplify everything legally and financially.  No one would owe anybody anything, and fight clubs would be established to defend your turf as possession is 90% of the law.

Last time when Newt Ginrich shutdown the pug's paid and dearly, as the dem's cleverly shutdown stuff that hurt PUG base...

What we do know is that our government always repeats past behavior, when something in the past worked, and this time is no fucking different.

It's so fucking boring and predictable.

I know its all bullshit, you know its all bullshit, so why in the fuck do the tyler's have like 24 story's in the past 24 hours on nothing but the fucking 'non-issue' shutdown,...?

The close a few parks and post-office and make folks squirm, and a little uncomfy at the social security office, and maybe the foodstamp lines get longer for a few days IMG ...

But do they fuck with the FBI, DHS, CIA, NSA, MIL? Fuck no,

Just stuff that hurts gramp's and granny,....

I wish the US gubmint would fucking die, ... but those are only fucking dreams,

This shutdown is about as interesting as michael jackson, ... or any other hollywood drama,

Maybe this will give people time to think what is important.  The FDA says that the current US intervention level (for radiation) is 1200 bq/kg.  Which is 10x more than what Japan has as its limit.  I would like it to be ZERO radiation and I do not think anyone should have to eat ANY amount of radiation, let alone a god awful amount of radiation.  This is going to shorten everyone's lives including cause a wave of cancer in about 12 years that will overwhelm any healthcare system.

Time to get out, get some exercise, clear your head, and figure out what you want to do with (potentially), the last decade of your life.

Mark Twain said "Giving up smoking is easy. I've done it 100 times."

If situations like this don't get the country on the path to a balanced budget, then Weimar/Zimbabwe hyperinflation will eventually happen.
