The Symbolism Hidden Within "THE WIZARD of OZ"
~ author unknown

The "Wizard of Oz", written by L. Frank Baum, is not a mere child's story.

What is "Oz" a symbol for?  Ounces.

What is measured in ounces? Gold.

What is the yellow brick road? Bricks or ingot bars of gold.

The character known as the Straw Man represents that fictitious, ALL CAPS, legal fiction - a PERSON, the Federal U.S. Government created with the same spelling as your birth name.

Remember what the Straw Man wanted from the Wizard of Oz? A Brain! No juristic person - legal fiction - paper corporation has a brain because he/she has no breath of life.

What did he get in place of a brain? A certificate: a Birth Certificate for a new legal creation.

He was proud of his new legal status, plus all the other legalisms he was granted. Now he becomes the epitome of the brainless sack of straw who was given a certificate in place of a grain of common sense.

Now, what about the Tin Man?  Does Taxpayer Identification Number (TIN) recall anything to mind? The poor TIN Man just stood there mindlessly doing his work until his body literally froze up and stopped functioning. He worked himself to death because he had no heart nor soul.

He's the heartless and emotionless creature robotically carrying out his daily task as though he were already dead.  He's the ox pulling the plow and the mule toiling under the yoke. These days, his task masters just oil him nightly with beer and place him in front of a hypnotic television until his very existence no longer has any meaning or value. His masters keep him cold on the outside and heartless on the inside in order to control any emotion or feeling that might arise.

The Cowardly Lion was always too frightened to stand up for himself. Of course, he was a bully and a big mouth when it came to picking on those smaller than he. (Have you ever noticed how bullies are really the biggest cowards? They act as though they have great courage, but, in reality, have none at all. They roar, but with no teeth of authority to back them up.) When push came to shove, the Cowardly Lion always buckled under and whimpered when anyone of any size or stature challenged him.  He wanted courage from the Grand Wizard, so he was awarded a medal of "official" recognition. Now, although remaining a coward, his official status allowed him to be a bully, but with officially recognized authority. (He's not unlike the Attorneys who hide behind the Middle Courts of the Temple Bar.) et al ad infinitum.

What about the trip through the field of poppies? Did you notice how this had no narcotic effect on the Straw Man (no brain) or the Tin Man (no heart or soul)?  They weren't real people, so drugs could not influence them.

The Wizard of Oz was written at the turn of the century, so how could the author have known America was going to be drugged?

The Crown has been playing the drug cartel game for centuries.

Just look up the history of Hong Kong and the Opium Wars.

The Crown already had valuable experience conquering all of China with drugs, so why not the rest of the world?

What was the Emerald City? The Federal Reserve System.

Who finally exposed the Wizard for what he really was?

Toto, the ugly (or cute, depending on your perspective) and somewhat annoying little dog. Toto means "in total, all together; Latin in toto."

What was it that the witch wanted after she alleged that the little dog had bitten her?  TOTO. ... everything. Notice how Toto was not scared of the Great Wizard's theatrics, yet he was so small in size, compared to the Wizard, that no one seemed to notice him?

The smoke, flames and holographic images of Oz were designed to frighten people into doing as the Great Wizard commanded.

Toto simply padded over, looked behind the curtain (the COURT, etc.), saw it was a scam, started barking until others paid attention to him and came to see what all the barking was about. Who was behind the curtain?

Just an ORDINARY PERSON controlling the levers that created the illusion of the Great Wizard's power and authority.

When Toto pulled back the curtain and completely exposed him, the charade was at an end. (The veil hiding the corporate legal fiction and its false courts was removed.)

The Wizard's game was UP. What was he after all? ... a con-man. A FRAUD.

We can see, in this tale, just how loud the bark from a little dog can be.

How about YOUR bark? How big is it?

Most of us remain silent and wait to be given whatever food and recognition, if any, by our legal master.

Let us not forget those pesky flying monkeys. What perfect mythical creatures to represent the Bar Association Attorneys who attack and control the little people for the Great Crown Wizard, the powerful and grand Bankers of Oz: GOLD!

How, finally, was the evil witch destroyed? .... pure, clean water LIQUIDATION!

How, at last, did Dorothy get home? She simply clicked her heels. She always had the power, and SO DO WE!

What would it take to expose the Wizard for what he is, tearing away his veils?

We each need only a brain, a heart and soul --- and COURAGE.

saw W Bush on tape on the golf channel last night (not quite black and white, but pretty faded) and thought, (for a moment) what a nice guy. he stopped playing golf during the Iraq war. (then i awakened from that dream) and realized Obama has replaced him, (in my view of all things wrong with this country, the dissembling, and the ethical lapses, the prosletyzing from the bully pulpit. Obama is a hectoring high school principal who probably had his tires slashed twice a year, and seems very similar SYMBOLLICALLY, to the school teacher, - dorothys nemesis who swears she will get her and her little dog too - who becomes the wicked witch in OZ, and her flying monkeys are obamas flying drones) yes we're not in Kansas any more, and we're about to rip the curtain away and poof, its black and white, and W Bush seems like an okay guy, after all we been through.

I'd never actually twigged that the story was a financial metaphor until I read this:

Ellen lays it out the connections between historical events and the story pretty well. Didn't learn much from the rest of the book though.

What if Baum had decided to write about all these things without using metaphor and allegory? Would the author be published? Is it a coincidence, and we have unwittingly projected our delusional interpretations?

Clearly Baum outshines many of todays' trashy childrens books. We should be thankful that an imaginary tale can be interpreted so deeply. Seems to me the world needs a few more like him.

WB, your latter day illustrations do justice to the original works. The tin Bernank will always be my favourite.

like most hollywood films made from novels, the novel is usually completely forgettable. if it wasn't for the movie of this one, the book would be forgetten. the open ended symbolism in OZ makes it a perfect vehicle, you can interpret these things in just about any way you like. i think steinbeck came closer to writing about the economic policies of the 30's, directly, and still keeping it in the format of a novel about a family moving west. his use of alternating chapters to describe the Joads journey, and the general social commentary which runs parallel, is pretty effective. (earned the novel the label of social propaganda)

when Hollywood makes film out of a novel which uses commentary, they just drop the commentary. i think Grapes of Wrath is deliberately failed attempt to portray the leftist movement in america, ford was always a conservative, and his work was politically motivated, for the purpose of defining the middle of america, for that purpose. i could call him a propagandist, maybe that was just the way he saw it. ford had his own brand of symbolism, not the literary equivalent. he won more academy awards than any director, which disproves the hollywood liberal stereotype, but clearly his best work is done on the right. baum's symbolism is more traditional, less native than fords. american audiences were never that excited about orwell for instance. that sort of symbolism seems like a trick, american audiences as you indicate prefer direct statements.

I believe that the correct spelling for Dorothy's little dog, in legalistic humanistic 'LAWERSPEAK', is 'en toto'; which seems to translate in 'Murkun to "IN TOTAL", fully fleshed out to a descripton such as 'IN A TOTAL SUMMATION, CAREFULLY WEIGHING THE EVENTS AND ACTIONS TO THIS DATE, AND COMING TO A CHOICE OF ACTION REGARDING...(insert the matter at hand)'.

THE BERNANK as 'TIN MAN' is quite telling, and also sad, at the same time. Back in history, the Spanish coined the word 'cupertino', meaning a tinker who could repair both copper and tin cooking pots. This was also about the time that the word 'solder' came in to being. WHAT DID YOU DO, WOMAN? I sold your (soldgeur, 'soldier') chickens to pay for the copperdam in the cooking pot. She sold her ('solder') food so that he could eat a cooked hot meal. THEY STILL CALL IT 'SOLDER JOINTS', but thanks to E.U.' mandates, they can't use TIN or LEAD to make these. THIS directly lead to the issue with Toyota's 'runaway accelaration' issues in their 'fly-by-wire' gas pedals...

Well, you're 'the shit', as they like to say nowadays, WB7.

L. Frank Baum might be what is described by current crop of Catholic pedophiliac-supporting pundits like Sean Hannity as 'a conspiracy-thinking tin-foil nut-job, living in mommy's basement, sitting in his underwear, masturbating to pictures of his heroes; who happen to be as crazy as he is'. 'If you don't like it, just SHUT UP!' (Hannity says, as he masturbates furiously, off camera, and under the table that he is sitting at)

You notice his inflection, as he is about to achieve his satisfaction; and his hatred for his wife, as he screams 'SHUT UP' for the cameras...

Listening to the nut-sucking 'logical' pundit, once again, I am reminded that I really, SERIOUSLY, want to terminate douche-bags like this with extreme prejudice, as 'he' hypnotizes the masses in the CONUS.

Sorry, WB.

I meant to post and give you a compliment, not go off on some wild tangent or two. My apologies.

w and crew,
great post !
i had this other deviant idea today, probably
an old one which was written about and developed
ages ago, it goes like this.
every culture or human paradigm has at it's heart
a delusion, a hideous image or vile lie and for good
the incongruous day to day blasphemes that grease
the wheels of social intercourse require just such
an abomination and at the heart or center of the
entire system.
how and why would such a structure exist or survive
one might ask?
it is not a devil's world.
here is the how and why.
man perceives the world in an askance and oblique
manner as he is the conceptual animal with an alien
spirit. only some small percentage of stimulus is
required for an entirely consistent and coherent conceptual
perception given the transient nature of his perspective
in space and time, but, age does change things considerably.
the lie at the heart is useful in that, if it is hideous enough,
no member of the tribe will accept it or even acknowledge its
existence. it will be rejected by all but the insane, the
very young to consciousness or the artist. there the truth, in general,
can be ignored ubiquitously and the illusion of the day
can be manufactured by those of influence and thereby
rule the day. samsara.
it is a parlor trick with temporal limitations but is
the mechanism of power and empire.
somewhere i heard that the sweet smell of the flowers, say the rose,
have at their olfactory root nothing more than a foul stench of decay.
i can smell that in my own life and world, maybe in all great art
and civilization?
that is only one half of the story though;
best to you !
the world is so big and so great that one can barely see
or recognize the better half of it or the better part!
overwhelming is the old, new old normal again.
anyway poems *t
iz goes here too !

Dewey Cheatum Howe's picture

The Emerald city is not The Federal Reserve. The original book was published in 1900 well prior to the F.R., Emerald City actually represents the US Treasury. The true symbolism is steeped in the issues at the time a major one in the 1896 election.

To get to 1896 we need to do a little background history on US monetary policy in general. Prior to 1834 the US was strictly on a bimetal gold/silver standard with a ration of 15:1. The world at the time ratioed it 15 1/2:1 so the effect in essence was the US was on a silver standard since gold in the main either left the country or US citizens tended to melt down gold currency since it was more valuable for it's metallic content than as currency. To remedy this in 1834 the ration was changed to 16:1 which reversed the trend driving silver out as currency and gold back in. Then you had the gold rush of the 1850s which caused an even further decline of silver used as currency. Up until 1857 you could use foreign silver coins for commerce because of this.

Then due to the Civil War the National Banking Act was passed which allowed for the issuing of greenbacks as currency without backing of any gold or silver to pay for the war. This act also had the effect along with winning the war of ending state's bonds and currencies as competition making the US State Note the sole currency of the United States. They then went back to a bimetal standard after the war with the US State Note aka Dollar being able to turned in for both gold and silver.

Around the 1870s there was a discovery of large silver deposits in the Western USA this caused a major drop in the value of silver in US coins making the coins face value more valuable than the metallic content among other issues. This is one of the reasons for the Fourth Coinage Act passed in 1873 under which the government would no longer produce silver dollars for domestic use or exchange silver at a fixed price. This along with European countries following suite contributed to the Panic in 1873 which caused an economic depression in the U.S. and Europe. What happened is you had the money supply contract and a rise in interest rates making it hard for banks to raise capital and pay off debt.

In 1878 the Bland–Allison Act remonetized the use of silver as currency for coins and a bimetal standard again but capped how much silver the Treasury could put into circulation, this also the beginning of the US silver certificate. In the 1880s and 1890s you had a decrease crop prices along with farmers holding large sums of debt. There was a push by the silver miners and farmers for the Government to increase money supply causing inflation so the farmers could pay down debt. You also had the free silver movement who wanted free coinage of silver. The Sherman Silver Purchase Act which upped the limit of silver the Treasury could purchase each month and issue each month. This was intended to expand the money supply and create inflation. Then you had the Panic of 1893 which caused another economic depression caused by a railroad building bubble and shaky financing (sound familiar) and subsequent repeal of The Sherman Silver Act.

Now we get to the election of 1896. The main issue was Gold standard or bimetal Gold/Silver standard with Democrats/Populists/Free Silver on the side of farmers, silver miners wanted gold and either free or increased silver coinage/certificate issuance to pay down debt through inflation and on the other side Republicans on the side of elites and bankers who wanted a strictly gold standard as a protection against inflation. Obiviously McKinley and the Democrats won and in 1900 when the book was published The Gold Standard Act was passed.

Now you know the significance of Dorothy and her silver slippers and signficance of the Witches of the East (Republicans) and West (Democrats/Populist/Free Silver). The Witch of the North is the Progressive/Woman's Suffrage Movement to which Baum was sympathetic with hence Dorothy being the protagonist and not a male.

There are people who have devoted their time noticing all the synchronicities that follow from playing the entire Dark Side of the Moon Album against the Wizard of OZ.

I have watched part of it and I don't disagree with their observations some of whcih seem uncanny, and some of which seem stretched.

That is synchronicity. Allowing uncanny connections to be revealed.

The original story is a true work of art in the sense that it stimulates so much synchronicity.

Growing up (did I say that?) I found the movie to be scary and then unsettling. I always watched it when it played on TV at least once a year.

It wasn't until the past five years that the metaphorical plot finally began to resolve itself to me and I am sure many others.

And while I have tried several times to work it into current events, this is my final interpretation, because it really hits the nail of history smack on the head.

Dewey Cheatum Howe's picture

No it isn't. Remember the movie was adapted from the book after the fact and some of the key symbolism was changed like silver slippers to ruby red slippers the melting part is different also. In movie Dorothy accidentally throws water on the witch after the witch sets the scarecrow on fire. In the book Dorothy throws water on the witch after she steals one of her silver slippers by tricking her into tripping over an invisible iron bar.

Political criticism or commentary about something of the day masquerading as art usually is hidden in symbolism. The symbolism was purposely changed in the film, whether it was to fit in with current events for the time (1939) to reflect the Federal Reserve I couldn't tell you but that is not syncronicity when the original works are altered at a later date. It's original meanings along with symbolism also get altered in the process.

It is also hard to make the synchronicity argument for Pink Floyd since there is no way of knowing if they composed DSOTM specifically to or not. It definitely is possible, probable is a different story.

Tall Tom's picture

Dewey Cheatum Howe...

What you are failing to understand is that History does not repeat but...IT RHYMES.

The issues of the 1896 elections were being satired by Baum. I will grant you that.

But while the devices, the specifics, of the theater may have changed, THE UNDERLYING THEME HAS NOT.

Therefore Baum's satire has a much VALIDITY TODAT, as it did when first penned. And the attributation to other devices, today's specifics, is, subsequently, WARRANTED.

Good job WB7, as usual.

williambanzai7's picture

Yes it is.

If I say it is my final interpretation, then for the next five minutes it damn sure as hell will be, synchronicity or not.

You seem to be blocking your ability to appreciate the sum total of what the original work inspired. Any artist would consider himself lucky to have stimulated so much interpretation, re-interpretation and creative progeny including your your contrary position.

Synchronicity, at least in the zen like sense, is not something that is intentionally composed by someone, it is natural and is appreciated for what it is.

What a cold and sterile existence it would be without.

An existence wherein our collective history cannot resonate unless approved by a PhD.

Wm, this is probably a stupid question, but did you know that a guy named Bill Still released a movie a few years back called "The Secret of Oz"?  It's actually quite good, and fits exactly with the stream of consciousness in this most excellent presentation of yours.  Kudos!

On a personal level, Mr. Still is a lot like Karl Denninger (R.I.P., I hear)- If you question even a teensy bit of his "wisdom", you get banned.  Still actually threw his hat in the ring for the libertarian primary in '12, but lost out to Gary Johnson.

I'm starting to ramble, but I can't tell you how pleasantly surprised I was to find you'd honored TE with your talent.

BTW, Toto knows everything!  He just doesn't realize it, yet.

As an infrequent frequenter to ZH, I have long been amused by the posters of poli-political persuasions who rail against the "big fish" of international finance and occult politics...but who simultaneously obtain their sustenance...daily bread if you will, from the very same system. Kind of like the scavenger fish which follow the commercial fishing vessels and feast upon the entrails tossed overboard.

Everyone eats from the same "evil" system, there are only scale and scope and degrees of self-righteousness. As is always the case, the smaller the fish the bigger the bitch.

Banzai, you have clearly gone over the top and on the DSM4 scale you have likely created your own category of crazy. There will be a pill waiting for you under the obamascheme which will help bring you back into the "fold"...or moist crease as I think of it. The comfort of conformity! One of us!
