The REAL Reason for Saudi Arabia’s Shift Away from U.S.

George Washington's picture

Saudi Arabia has warned of a shift away from the U.S.

Here’s the real reason: China just dethroned the U.S. as the world’s largest importer of oil.

As Oil Price notes:

Last month the world witnessed a paradigm shift: China surpassed the United States as the world’s largest consumer of foreign oil, importing 6.3 million barrels per day compared to the United States’ 6.24 million. This trend is likely to continue and this gap is likely to grow, according to the EIA’s October short-term energy outlook. Wood Mackenzie, a leading global energy consultancy, echoed this prediction, estimating Chinese oil imports will rise to 9.2 million barrels per day (70% of total demand) by 2020.

World Liquid Fuels Consumption

Forget Syria, Iran and Bahrain … the stated reasons for the Saudi shift.

Those are all real … but the much bigger driver is oil. Indeed, most geopolitical policy is based upon oil (and here) and gas.

"Laurents! What is this (shaking paper notes)??"

"Turkish money, Auda."

"You said there would be Gold in Aquaba!"

"I was wrong. You said you would attack Aquaba with Sharif Ali for your Pleasure!"

"Yes, but Gold is Honorable."

"Then as HM Representatve, I will write you a promisory note for 1000 British Gold Sovereigns. Will you take my word, Auda?"

"Of course."

******

"King, Russia will give you Gold for your Oil.

"And China, too!

"Thank you, Boris and Wang Fong. I will take your word."

"Here is a chest of gold bars as our promise."

"You are so unlike those dirty Americans and English. They are worse than Howietat. Animals."

This is an item of concern for those who still live in Hawaii.

2 days after a Typhoon hit Japan, and TEPCO admitted large radiation releases due to the storm, radiation levels spike in Hawaii.

Keep in mind, this will travel to mainland USA and cross over in a day to 4 days.

Another storm is headed to Fukushima for a 1 -2 punch.   This will extend the danger time frame.

Basic good radiation practice here:

1) Stay out of the rain

2) Dose up with anti-oxidants

3) Run your multiple HEPA filters all the time

4) Get a Geiger and learn how to use it

Charts and Maps are Here at the NUKEPRO

The Saudi royals need us to support them politically, not just as a customer. the Chinese market makes us less important as a customer. obama has set out to depose all muslim leaders that stand in the way of his caliphate. He has gotten rid of Muburak and Ghadaffi and is working on Assad. He continues to support the muslim brotherhood in Egypt. when and if they fall he will go after Jordan, Lebanon, and the Saudis. American ignorance of islam will cause huge harm.

I have absolutely no conviction that present regimes in China and Russia will outlast those in US, Israel or Saudi Arabia.

China is just beginning to set up social safety nets!Whom are they going to tax--rich tycoons that are moving all their wealth and themselves abroad?  The same goes for Russia. It has higher emigration rate now than when the Communists took over in 1920s with capital flight beginning in 1990s, as soon as the oligarchy was established with the help of Harvard and western bankers.

We'd start an Arab Sping revolution and then invade to save the Royals  -then take them out while blaming it on the terrorsists and install another puppet regime   under the protection of our now permanent occupying military  - It took us a while to take out Ghadaffi  -because he was popular in Libya.

Saudis are just more well known and familialy connected. Top 6k are royal family and own all the resources. How many 100 millionaires in the US? They live lavish like the house of saud but not as open or well known about it. I think we have our "royals" but the ideals of Jeffersonian america make it hard to be as open about it. It's one of those placating things to tell the masses it ain't all that bad. If they were in our faces about it as much as the house of saud is some of them would be shot by bubbas.

I could leave it all alone if they'd leave me alone. Unfortunately for all of us it's never enough for those guys (the uber rich). They want it all. In the end a lot of bloodshed as someone always miscalculates.

I keep thinking it's similar to wwII/great depression. US financed GB the waning world power. US suffered migtily in the depression, much as CHina will but, with manufacturing base and population sheer numbers came out victorious. Lots of chinese culture is great but the toddler being ignored while run over says a lot of negatives. Plus, the other asians fear and hate china. Should be some serious decimation when this shit gets real. Big war, china next global master, only for awhile as they run into a demographic winter with one child policy and all that. Should make for an interesting next century or two. Too bad I won't be around for it.

DrD Chinese have a great depth of culture, thousands of years of science and philosiphy. As to the toddler being run over it's a cyclical thing, think of the barbarism in the major cities of England in the 19th century, they where true cesspit's when the British Empire was at the height of it's power. New York city in the early 20th century was also a desperate place for the poor. It's a feature of rising power's under the capitalist system.

Maybe. Not being alive at the turn of the 20th century can't say for sure it wouldn't have happened in NYC then. Certainly can't imagine it happening anywhere in the us today (except maybe a white kid in a largely black neighborhood but even there I think some decency would prevail). I also have a hard time imagining a lack of street justice for anyone who drove away after doing that in the US. We've got our problems but that was truly disgusting.

The Saudis are in a bit of a Catch-22.  They fear the US, Europe and Japan devaluing their currencies and setting up a potential collapse when the bubble(s) burst, so they want to link more with China.  Yet, what happens to China (and its export driven economy) when the bubbles burst globally?  Does anyone really think that China will emerge unscathed?  Or will the Chinese bubble(s) also pop - and be potentially even more devastated?  How do you feed 1.2 billion people, and provide them with jobs when the entire globe goes into a depression?

I have a chinese fiance'.  Her grand parents during Mao's Great Leap Forward in the late 1950's and 1960's  avoided starvation eating pig feed, cat feed and bark off of trees. It's a terrible way to survive, but survive they did. Others were not so fortunate.

I have lived in China.  Small business is thriving there.  It is mostly cash... off of the tax grid.  Entrepreneurs only know 7 day weeks.  They are not pussys like most of America.

China is developing the old Silk Road of Marco Polo, with high speed rail, planned for penetration throughout the west of Europe.

In China there will always be the well connected thuggish overloards.  Every country has its wired parasites.  They are alive and well in the USSA.  But the entrepreneurial horse is out of its Chinese barn and it's never going back in.

And the infamous one child policy:  Only if you are a government employee.  I know families who have 3 children.

As an Expat in Asia I cant believe what you said about the one child policy.

Were you never around when the Chenghuan came through town and found women pregnant with their second or third children and forced labor in the 6/7 month of pregnancy to abort and kill the child? Its the exact opposite, the poor and the middle class pay the highest price for opting for more children, while the public officials write off with tax money 2nd. 3rd, and 4th private homes in different cities. Then keep their mistresses there and pop out kids, and pay to send them to some posh school as long as they never show their face. But the public officials, such as the Most Senior, Grand, and Wise Abjudicator of the Taijin Public Water Service Management & Oversight Main Committee Body of Established Officials gets away with whatever. (Upon translation their titles come out like?that, and in kanji: ?????????????????????)?

Those are the nice ways. The Chenghuan get away with ruthless beatings, murders, seizures, destruction of property, and even coerced baby killing!

I will agree about the entrepenuerial spirit in China is thriving, but it faces a leviathan of barriers both social and legal.  Even those who try to make a start by peddling goods or start street shops have their entire livelihoods crushed by these Public Officials.

The greater hope is the Old Silk road which you speak of, and the influx of ideas and, gasp, foreigners it will bring.  However, you can't belittle the strength of the corrupt barons in China. I never plan to return to the US for a bundle of reasons, but China is on its own level.

That entrepreneurial spirit even takes Chinese people to charge fees for families trying to use boats to save nearby drowning family members.

Sick fucking country.

Ultimately currencies must settle. THAT has been the problem of the age...settlement in US treasuries does not satisfy most parties anymore.

In the future China and the Saudis will trade. At the end of then day one will have an excess of the others currency. It will then be up to the managers of the currency as to the best way to settle. Gold could work, bonds could work (though never again to the extent the USA has sold) and so could increased spending of the excess currency in the country where it originated.

The bottom line is that we are moving to a future in which settlement, in real wealth, will once again be required.

The world has finally seen what Jacques Reuff saw years ago, that the current system is scandalous and makes no sense even as it gave advantage to the USA who initially never demanded it.

I think we're moving towards a global settlement currency backed by gold or other commodities for use between nations in trade, and that nations will still each have their own fiat currencies for internal use. That way devaluations can be more readily contained internally - prices will go up or down vis-a-vis the global settlement currency based on internal nation management, but, e.g., devaluing the USD will not affect global trade settlements. But I think only after much bloodshed will this happen because US isn't going to go peacefully into the night.

Indeed.....the petrodollar is in its death throes. Why bother using $US a a medium of exchange when you are selling your oil to the Chinese who don't need or want to use the $US? Take the Yuan or, better yet, get paid in Euros....Saudis spend a lot of time in Europe anyway so who needs $US? What are they good for? Buying bonds?? Buying US real estate? Ahem! Jim Willie said that the Saudis would do something like this and he posted it on March 29, 2013:

http://news.goldseek.com/GoldenJackass/1364601600.php

New chapter to turn. The ongoing endless QE to Infinity has hastened Eastern trade leaders. The near 0% return from USTBond yields has motivated them to seek alternatives.

They are horrified by the debasement of their hard-earned reserves, filled to the gills with USTBonds of shrinking value and low yield. The new trade settlement system based in Gold finance will turn the tables, as once more trade is to dictate banking.

The combination of central bank hyper monetary inflation, big US bank fraud, security agency $100 bill counterfeit, and rampant criminality in the US financial system has motivated the Eastern nations to act.

They have acted.

The clear outcome is that the Western banking system will topple, since the East will be shoving the USTBonds back to Anglo-American shores for cemetery treatment. Trade should always dictate banking.

The major trade partners no longer want US$-based trade settlement.

Watch for the crowning blow in the Saudi response soon, since they always follow the winners.
