nice medly, i think.
my people (northeast mississippi and the delta) were just barely well-off enough and in principal opposed to all american wars, such that they could effectively avoid involvement...they're thinking (and i've heard it said) was, 'fuck you...you decimated our land, cities and towns; and now you expect our participation? your wars are your own'. and in certain quarters, that attitude still exists.
FDR's help (and, whatever negative can be said about FDR, he did do much for the whole region) started to change all that...and it transformed the democratic party for ever.
in about twelve hours from now, i'll be headed down to inspect what's become of the place...

Very nice songs, but so sad ...
My family has strowed lots of blood under both of those flags, and under British flags on this land as well. I am proud of our part in every war since colonial days, but I get a sense of deja vu when thinking about the Civil War. Maybe my brothers from all over this country will stand against tyranny this time. Maybe a different outcome.
my thinking is this: the confederates were wrong in pretext and right in principal (the right to self-determination).
oh, yes, slavery is evil...but it's far more wicked to pretend this soft-slavery that's coiled it's loop about us is in any way less nefarious...now, the new confederacy (which will not be limited to dixie) will have the dual mandate of valid pretext (rebellion from the soft-slavery-tyrrany) and, naturally, the most fundamental of all sacredly-endowed principals, self-determination.

re: dual mandate. This is the reason why TPTB must wad it all up into a ball and call it the Tea Party. Then they can easier destroy it. If the Occupy movement was legit and were alive today, and the Tea Party a memory, it would be in the same cross hairs. It doesn't matter to them if the Tea Party is not really a group, what matters is the idea of resistance to the NWO must be defeated.
We can take issue with the evil behind most of the wars but those who served their country when called and simply did their duty, deserve our utmost respect. IMHO.
Based on that logic then modern day Germans, Japanese, Italians, etc should be compelled to have respect for those who "served their country when called and simply did their duty".
I disagree. Perhaps in thhypothetical instance of a war actually coming to our shores or even remotely one of defense of this nation I might be compelled to offer respect but 20th century wars-ALL of them- wre wars of choice, typically begun on false premises and fought with overwhelming propoganda, lies, and deceit.
Should I respect those involved in vaporizing the hunderds of thousands of innocent Japanese men, women, and children in an absolutely needless criminal attack? Is Harry Truman a "hero". For murder? I think not.
When put in the situation that many men were in WWI, WWII, Korea, Vietnam, etc it is true that many did behave heroically and in mnay cases deserve respect for htose actions. But one must consider the original action of CHOOSING to be in that situation and participating in such a endeavor in nthe first place. And yes, everyone has/had a choice. It is only the consequences of those choices that are to be debated.
By far I am the luckiest of all. All I had to do is sign a frivolous document from Washington at the Post Office. Grampa too old for WWII, dad too young for Korea, too old for Vietnam. Only my West Point Uncle did Vietnam and lost his Point roommate and best friend in some place we supposedly never were at a time we were never supposed to be there. Still haven't figured out how that defended anything remotely related to the this country.
To anyone that found themselves in the mess I am truly sorry. For those who acted heroically in those situations you deserve acknowledgement. But blind respect for meerly "serving" and "doing their duty"?
No. I think pity is more fitting. ATMO.
I was taught in the military that white males are inferior and get singled out and are discriminated against for jobs, discipline, promotions, and are generally second class citizens.
You must have been hanging with some really shitty "teachers". What branch? What MOS?
War is intertwined with so many parts of our society. Growth, consumption, taxation, money, interest rates, political power and corporate greed.
Remember our vets as people who we as a global community forced or compelled to support a vicious cycle that we all perpetuate.

As black metal band Emperor said in three simple words in their song 'I am the Black Wizards'...
"I am them."
When human sentiment does not start with this thought, the sentiment is misguided.
