America and Israel Created a Monster Computer Virus Which Now Threatens Nuclear Reactors Worldwide

George Washington's picture

In their obsession to stop Iran from developing nuclear weapons, the U.S. and Israel created a computer virus (called “Stuxnet”) to take out Iran’s nuclear enrichment machinery.

The virus appears to have spread to other countries.

One of the world’s top computer security experts – Eugene Kaspersky – said this week that the virus has attacked a Russian nuclear reactor.   As The Register notes:

The infamous Stuxnet malware thought to have been developed by the US and Israel to disrupt Iran’s nuclear facilities, also managed to cause chaos at a Russian nuclear plant, according to Eugene Kaspersky.

The revelation came during a Q&A session after a speech at Australia’s National Press Club last week, in which he argued that those spooks responsible for “offensive technologies” don’t realise the unintended consequences of releasing malware into the wild.

“Everything you do is a boomerang,” he added. “It will get back to you.”

***

“Unfortunately, it’s very possible that other nations which are not in a conflict will be victims of cyber attacks on critical infrastructure,” said Kaspersky.

“It’s cyber space. [There are] no borders, [and many facilities share the] same systems.”

Not finished there, Kaspersky also claimed to have heard from “Russian space guys” in the know that even machines on the International Space Station had been infected “from time to time” after scientists arrived aboard with infected USBs.

Watch for yourself:

Other security experts agree.

As British security website V3 – in an article entitled “Stuxnet: UK and US nuclear plants at risk as malware spreads outside Russia” – reports:

Experts from FireEye [background] and F-Secure [background] told V3 the nature of Stuxnet means it is likely many power plants have fallen victim to the malware ….

F-Secure security analyst Sean Sullivan told V3 Stuxnet’s unpredictable nature means it has likely spread to other facilities outside of the plant mentioned by Kaspersky.

“It didn’t spread via the internet. It spread outside of its target due to a bug and so it started traveling via USB. Given the community targeted, I would not be surprised if other countries had nuclear plants with infected PCs,” he said.

Director of security strategy at FireEye, Jason Steer, mirrored Sullivan’s sentiment, adding the insecure nature of most critical infrastructure systems would make them an ideal breeding ground for Stuxnet.

***

Steer added the atypical way Stuxnet spreads and behaves, means traditional defences are ill equipped to stop, or even accurately track the malware’s movements.

“It’s highly likely that other plants globally are infected and will continue to be infected as it’s in the wild and we will see on a weekly basis businesses trying to figure out how to secure the risk of infected USB flash drives,” he said.

***

The use of XP in power plants is set to become even more dangerous as Microsoft has confirmed it will officially cut support for the 12-year-old OS in less than a year. The lack of support means XP systems will no longer receive critical security updates from Microsoft.

That’s almost as brilliant as waging a global war on terror in such an idiotic way that it is increasing terrorism

Could you show the outflow going into the Drinking Fountain?  Outflow should also indicate radioactive cesium.

Great diagram, but yeah, expand the outflow to whatever body of water they dump into and be sure to have a the three eyed fishies glowing in the dark.

Well if they've managed to run a nuke plant using Windows, doesn't seem like a virus could cause more damage.

That is so true, love the box.  And everything that is said on it is true and alot more capabilities also.  The spooks in the US and Israel made a monster and let it  out.  What they never figured is that one, this monster would come back to harm their systems.  And two it would evolve and others make changes to the code to make it even worse than what you wanted.

This should be no surprise leaving the question, why would the US and Israel elect to release chaos upon the world?

Because there is good money to be made out of chaos. And those who offer a solution to chaos will be welcomed as saviors. After that, people will be willing to give up everything just to make the chaos stop.

Windows XP is abandoned April 8th, 2014 by Microsoft.

No new updates or security patches will be issued leaving millions of workstations 60% more vunerable to malware.

Businesses and government offices are behind the curve in upgrading to Windows 7 or 8 OS. Windows 7 will be sold out and users will have to install Windows 8 which will be quite a change... good luck with Windows 8 and the NSA backdoors.

Stuxnet is sold on the black market for under 100k and can be reprogrammed to attack different systems with SCADA controls to disrupt service or do actual damage while monitoring data looks normal. The virus is usually introduced to a closed system via thumb drives.

My best advice would be to upgrade to Windows 7. It is pretty painless and does not take too long.

Windows 8 sucks for now.

If you continue to use XP, Avast or other anti-malware won't help much. These companies won't care about XP machines either.

keep using it.   you don't need the updates.  they say this to scare you off of it.  just use good security software, like Avast.

By Glenn Chapman (AFP) – Mar 3, 2011

LONG BEACH, California — A German computer security expert said Thursday he believes the United States and Israel’s Mossad unleashed the malicious Stuxnet worm on Iran’s nuclear program.

“My opinion is that the Mossad is involved,” Ralph Langner said while discussing his in-depth Stuxnet analysis at a prestigious TED conference in the Southern California city of Long Beach.

“But, the leading source is not Israel… There is only one leading source, and that is the United States.”

There has been widespread speculation Israel was behind the Stuxnet worm that has attacked computers in Iran, and Tehran has blamed the Jewish state and the United States for the killing of two nuclear scientists in November and January.

“The idea behind Stuxnet computer worm is really quite simple,” Langner said. “We don’t want Iran to get the bomb.”

The malicious code was crafted to stealthily take control of valves and rotors at an Iranian nuclear plant, according to Langner.

“It was engineered by people who obviously had inside information,” he explained. “They probably also knew the shoe size of the operator.”

Stuxnet targets computer control systems made by German industrial giant Siemens and commonly used to manage water supplies, oil rigs, power plants and other critical infrastructure.

“The idea here is to circumvent digital data systems, so the human operator could not get there fast enough,” Langner said.

“When digital safety systems are compromised, really bad things can happen — your plant can blow up.

Most Stuxnet infections have been discovered in Iran, giving rise to speculation it was intended to sabotage nuclear facilities there. The worm was crafted to recognize the system it was to attack.

The New York Times reported in January that US and Israeli intelligence services collaborated to develop the computer worm to sabotage Iran’s efforts to make a nuclear bomb.

Russia called on NATO in January to launch an investigation into the computer worm that targeted a Russian-built Iranian nuclear power plant, saying the incident could have triggered a new Chernobyl.

Russia’s envoy to NATO in January said Stuxnet caused centrifuges producing enriched uranium at the Bushehr plant to spin out of control, which could have sparked a new “Chernobyl tragedy,” the 1986 nuclear meltdown in Ukraine.

“The operators saw on their screens that the centrifuges were working normally when in fact they were out of control,” Dmitry Rogozin told reporters after meeting with ambassadors from the 28-nation Western alliance.

Russia is helping Iran build a nuclear power plant in the southern city of Bushehr for civilian use.

Langner said the Stuxnet code was designed to trick human operators by showing them recorded readings indicating machinery is running normally while behind the scenes they are heading for destruction.

“It’s definitely hard-core sabotage,” Langner said of Stuxnet. “It’s like in the movies where during a heist the security camera is running pre-recorded video showing nothing is wrong.”

Iran’s envoy to the International Atomic Energy Agency has denied that the Stuxnet attack effected the country’s nuclear program, including Bushehr.

A terrifying aspect of Stuxnet, according to Langner, is that it is a generic attack that would work well in factories, power plants, or other operations plentiful in the United States.

“It’s a cyber weapon of mass destruction,” Langner said. “We’d better start preparing right now.”

"1. Reactor 3 is completely missing, which means the press and anyone who has claimed anything about pressures, temperatures, containment, ect at reactor 3 after March 14 is lying and people need to pay attention to it, because failure of the public to realize the massive extent of the lies about what is going on there will leave the door open to a repeat event."

"2. Reactor 4 is Building 7, demolished by explosives. Reactor 4 had been defueled and was undergoing replacement of it's internal stainless steel shroud, yet blew it's containment anyway. That is the FINAL smoking gun, an empty reactor is inert, and cannot produce an explosion, yet one happened at 4 that was so powerful it destroyed the structure leaving it in danger of falling over. Overheated open fuel pools cannot produce hydrogen because in an open fuel pool the water boils off at 100 Celsius, and won't be present in pressurized form at 2,000 degrees Celsius to liberate it's hydrogen by losing it's oxygen to the zircon cladding in the fuel rods."

I don't even know why is America sharing the blame on this one?

Stuxnet has been traced back to Mossad.  Period.  In terms of foreign policy, do people still actually believe that Israel is taking orders from the US?  Then why pay them billions in aid, annually?  Thats a payment that indicates submissiveness to me.  Like a 'protection fee' gangsters would ask for.

"“But, the leading source is not Israel… There is only one leading source, and that is the United States.”"

Correction: The leading source is not the United States.  It is Israel (Mossad).
