Glutathione: Boost Your Health and Help Protect Yourself From Radiation

George Washington's picture

Glutathione is your body’s “master antioxidant”.

Every cell of your body contains glutathione. And glutathione makes any other antioxidant which you ingest more effective.

Low glutathione levels are associated with serious diseases such as cancer, Aids and diabetes.

As we age, our glutathione levels decline. Indeed, low glutathione levels may be associated with aging quickly:

Glutathione is also central to many other basic mechanisms in our body, such as immune response, blood transport and protein synthesis:

Numerous studies have shown that glutathione can help protect cells against radiation damage, including studies published in the following journals:

This is not entirely surprising, given that it’s well-documented that all antioxidants help to protect against damage from radiation.   Specifically, one of the main ways in which low-level ionizing radiation damages our bodies is by the creation of free radicals. (This 2-minute BBC video shows how damaging free radicals can be to your health.)

Columbia University explains the damaging effects of low-level radiation through free radical creation:

Some radiation experts argue that the creation of a lot of free radical creation is the most dangerous mechanism of low level ionizing radiation:

During exposure to low-level doses (LLD) of ionizing radiation (IR), the most of harmful effects are produced indirectly, through radiolysis of water and formation of reactive oxygen species (ROS). The antioxidant enzymes – superoxide dismutase (SOD): manganese SOD (MnSOD) and copper-zinc SOD (CuZnSOD), as well as glutathione (GSH), are the most important intracellular antioxidants in the metabolism of ROS. Overproduction of ROS challenges antioxidant enzymes.

We’ve previously told you how to get past the hype to find the foods that are highest in antioxidants.

But glutathione – as the “master antioxidant”, which is in every cell of your body – is probably the most important one to focus on.

Dr. Jimmy Gutman – a practicing physician, former Undergraduate Director and Residency Training Director of Emergency Medicine at McGill University in Montreal, Quebec, who has served on the Board of Directors of the Canadian Association of Emergency Physicians – claims:

Raising glutathione levels protects cells from damage from the most dangerous of free radicals, the hydroxyl-radical, is released when ionizing radiation hits us.

Note also that exposure to radiation depletes glutathione in your body.   You basically use up glutathione neutralizing the free radicals created by radiation. So it is important to keep your glutathione levels up when you are exposed to radiation.

How Can We Boost Glutathione Levels?

Despite the hype from the supplement industry, glutathione supplements don’t do anything.  Specifically, our stomach acid destroys glutathione … so you’ll be throwing money away if you buy supplemenets.

But you can eat foods that are high in the precursors to glutathione … and your body will use them to make more glutathione.

Specifically, 3 amino acides – cysteine, glycine and glutamate – are the precursors to glutathione production.

Protein-rich foods tends to be high in all 3. But heating or pasteurizing them destroys many of the glutathione-producing properties.

For example, raw eggs and raw meat are high in cysteine, but cooking destroys the cysteine.   Most industrially-raised meat is of poor quality, and large-scale egg producers have been riddled with salmonella and other problems in recent years.

If you raise your own animals for meat or egg-laying hens, then you’ll know they’re safe.  Otherwise, it may be a little risky eating raw eggs or meat.

Raw milk is apparently very high in glutathione precursors.   But the USDA says that raw milk can be dangerous … and the police may go to some length to shut down raw milk producers.

Raw cruciferous vegetables (brocolli, cauliflower, brussel sprouts, cabbage, cress, and bok choy) are also a good source of cysteine.  But you would have to eat a lot of them … which would cause stomach distress in many people.

So what’s the answer?

Exercise boosts glutatione (and see this).  Lack of sleep can deplete glutathione.  So exercise and get enough rest.

Numerous scientific studies show that “undenatured whey protein” raises glutathione levels.  See this, this, this, this, this, and this.  (Whey protein is derived from milk or cheese, and “undenatured” just means that it is heated enough to kill bacteria … but not high enough to destroy the glutathione precursors.) You can buy it at most health food stores.

If you are a vegan – eating neither meat or dairy products – then you may want to make sure you get enough brown rice protein (because it’s high in the glutathione precursor cysteine).

Supplements available in health food stores – such as Alpha lipoic acid (and here), N-acetylcysteine, S-adenosyl-L-methionine, and the herb milk thistle (and see this) – have also been shown to boost glutathione levels.

For more information on glutathione from physicians – including additional tips for boosting glutathione levels – see this, this and this.

Postscript: Many companies are trying to sell various glutathione boosters. Some work, some don’t … and some do more harm than good. We don’t endorse any specific product.

Read this for more information on how to protect yourself from radiation.

GW - keep up the good work.  You always seem to do an excellent amount of research, and present things in a nice logical fashion.

No amount of research is going to be categorical, because our body of knowledge is always expanding and experiments are never done under identical conditions.  When we add in the fact that medical knowledge is tightly controlled by the pharmaceutical industry, who have a vested interest not in making people healthy, but rather in making a profit (or for those of us of a more conspiratorial bent, that they are intentionally making us unwell)- then it is easy to see that sourcing good medical and nutritional information is going to be extremely difficult.

I always appreciate your articles and can see your intentions are always the best, keep up the good work - as far as I am concerned, this information is extremely useful and seems worth adopting, at the very least worth further investigation.  Certainly nobody can argue with 'do some healthy exercise and sleep well'.  :D

I got a professional Geiger counter with alpha probe and everything and I've measured radiation in freshly caught fish which to my surprise was actually above background level. I still eat fish and am not bothered by it at all but I don't for one second regret getting the Geiger counter, in fact, I can sell it one ebay now for 3 times what I paid for it but I am planning on holding on to it

Did you read my linked comment? Even if you'd use an image-generating semiconductor detector (far superior to any Geiger counter), the correct mensuration depends on the (complex) preparation of the sample. Your instrument is alright, but self shielding of the sample cannot be overcome by that.

I wrote up an extensive article on Radiation reaching Hawaii through the water. A lot of connect the dots stories, using news sources in Hawaii.

For a number of reasons I recently left Hawaii. But the reality of Hawaii is that if you are not getting enough ocean sports in, you are paying too much for "paradise". Swimming in Strontium is not my idea of enjoyment.

You have to feel sorry for anyone foolish enough to get health advice from "George Washington"; and they've probably already won their Darwin Prize; but just in case there's someone educatable reading this I'll throw in a few facts to offset some of the ignorant nonsense. Cooked hens eggs are exactly what you want to eat; the statements made in George's rambling ignorance are so misleading as to consitute propaganda; on the part of the "health food/ supplement industry"; I suppose. The process of human digestion reduces the animal protein materials to amino acids; the statement that cooking eggs reduces their ability to support the bodies glutathione metabolism is false. The amino acids are what you use to make gltathione and that's what you'll be left with; after boiling your egg and eating it. Note well, that two bio-chemicals are mentioned early on in the babbling that contain copper and zinc. A good daily mult-vitamin/ mineral supplement will contain copper and zinc, and selenium, and vanadium; these can be very inexpensive; such as Costco, or CV Pharmacy, (Long's Drugs), house brands of daily multi-vitamins and minerals; just read the contents label. Without the multi-mineral pill and with lots of expensive health food store weirdness; your body will basically be shit out of luck; since copper and zinc are elements and you can't manufacture them. Cheers.

I spent a couple of hours researching your claim about cooking eggs and you might be right (and many Internet sources - including from physicians - wrong).

Specifically,  the “cooking destroys cysteine” claim may well be a myth … at least for eggs and meat.  Cooked eggs appear to have slightly more cysteine than raw eggs. And cooked meat may have quite a bit more cysteine than raw meat.

Great write-up.  My main source of glutathione building blocks is One World Whey.  It is undenatured, unheated and is made from the milk of grass-fed cows grazing on certified organic pastures (as in, no fertilizers) and is also a great source of BCAAs (branch-chain amino acids).  It's the centerpiece of my smoothies, it tastes great and is far and away better than any protein powder I've ever used; the hemp protein powder I add to it (mostly for fiber) is a distant second since much of it is not digested.  I don't sell it, bitches, find it yourself (if you can).

Listen to Pharmacist Ben Fuchs' "Bright Side Ben" radio show.  If you think this is all balderdash, I wouldn't be surprised if you're a Keynesian apologist, groom John Yellen's stool and have your entire net worth locked up in hedges.

N-acetyl cysteine works just be sure to take 2 grams of Vitamin C with 1 Gram of it. Also You can get Reduced Glutathione in a Sub-lingual form. Don't smell the N-acetyl cysteine it really is like smelling rotten eggs while your in an outhouse. Selenium is a cheap and potent antioxidant that also helps. I have a mitochondrial disease and take these daily to help my energy level. Nice that they have other properties.

the Sulpher containing amino acids are a little difficult to get in sufficient quantity; and they smell. If you notice boiled hens eggs also have a slight smell to them; this is the sulpher containing amino-acids in the egg. It was first observed during the Boer War by British Military doctors that the patients who got an egg a day did much, much better in wound healing and recovery; this is what they were finding out, but at the time they didn't know anything about the bio-chemistry involved. I eat one boiled hens egg, a day; and this guarantees that I have all the glathione precursors I can use; you can too. You should ignore all the ignorant rambling about the magic health food supplements.

Haha...  I just recently starting taking NAC - I bought a bottle by the NOW brand since that's what Whole Foods had.  I thought I just bought a bad batch or something since it does smell sulphurous.  I don't notice much difference but I do put some strain on my lungs and liver from e-cigs, weed and alcohol so I'll just trust Ben Fuchs on his recommendation.  It's reassuring that someone with mitochondrial disease (? never heard of this, I hope you get better) advocates it.

Yes, glutathione will help. But don't neglect other measures:

1. Always wear a garlic necklace. Garlic is a powerful antioxidant and will help protect against Werewolves, Vampires, ghosts, and Demon Radium.

2. Avoid the deadly ionizing rays of the sun. Only venture out at night. And even then, wear sunglasses and heavy layers of sunscreen on moonlit nights. Remember that moonlight is reflected sunlight.

3. Spend days sleeping underground in a lead lined coffin.

4. Purchase magnetic charms and amulets, preferably containing lots of tungsten. Magnetic fields deflect radiation and tungsten absorbs it.

5. Avoid the oxidizing effects of oxygen by only breathing when absolutely necessary. Hold your breath as much as possible.

6. Most powerful of all is the cryptic invocation whose heading is the Dragon's Tail, sign of the descending node:

OGTHROD AI'F
GEB'L-EE'H
YOG-SOTHOTH
'NGAH'NG AI'Y

One World Whey - nuff said.  Look it up...excellent supplement, but is 160 bucks for a 5lb tub.  Mixes pure with everything even water, no clumping and tastes excellent too.

Also, nascent Iodine (to fight radiation in your thyroid) and to fight any fluoride from unfiltered water.  Most nascent Iodine is shitty tasting and not even effective.

I've been using this for 2 months though:

http://www.infowarsshop.com/-Infowars-Life_c_79.html

The Top 4 Reasons You Need Nascent Iodine

1.      Iodine is an essential mineral that supports thyroid health and well-being.

2.      Nascent iodine may support healthy iodine levels.

3.      Nascent iodine may support healthy hormone levels.

4.      Nascent iodine may be involved in maintaining healthy metabolism.

What are the Health Benefits of Nascent Iodine?

·         Proper iodine levels may provide major support against environmental and dietary toxins

·         May help detoxify halogens like fluorine (fluoride) and bromine

Yeah! see my comment above re: OWW.  From just a morning shake with one serving and some other stuff (BTT, EFAs), it blew my mind how much physical activity I could sustain well past noon.  I'm talking steady, not jittery energy-drink caffeination energy.  I actually get clumping in my smoothies but I don't use blenders.  I don't care, it tastes great and adds texture to an otherwise palate-boring event.

My nascent iodine is in the mail, can't wait to get up on it.  I'm still skeptical but the broad support from different camps got me to buy some.

actually, the very best whey protein powders are from 100% grass-fed cows .    they are still undenatured, cold-processed etc etc just like OWW, WheyNatural, etc  but you get extra nutritional benefits from the 100% grass-fed cows vs. the more common grain & grass-fed variety.       there are several products on the market.    off the top of my head, i can think of one from Reservage and one from the Bulletproof guy , i think it's www.bulletproofexec.com .  Currently i'm using the Resderveage product (form Whole Foods) cuz it makes a chocolate flavor which most of its competitors don't do.

What Fukushima is giving us is RAIDS - Radiological Acquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome. The radiation is killing off our ability to fight disease, through the mechanics of Neutropenia/Leukopenia:

"Neutropenia is an abnormally low level of neutrophils in the blood. Neutrophils are white blood cells (WBCs) produced in the bone marrow that ingest bacteria. Neutropenia is sometimes called agranulocytosis or granulocytopenia because neutrophils make up about 60% of WBCs and have granules inside their cell walls. Neutropenia is a serious disorder because it makes the body vulnerable to bacterial and fungal infections."

http://medical-dictionary.thefreedictionary.com/neutropenia

"Leukopenia - A condition in which the number of leukocytes circulating in the blood is abnormally low and which is most commonly due to a decreased production of new cells in conjunction with various infectious diseases or as a reaction to various drugs or other chemicals."
