Former U.S. President On Industrial Espionage: “We Shouldn’t Collect Economic Information Under The Pretext Of Security”

George Washington's picture

NSA Spying Isn’t Focused On Terrorism

The NSA and other government agencies have conducted industrial espionage for decades.

They’ve been spying all over the world, on allies as well as enemies.

This has zero to do with terrorism.

Even former president Bill Clinton says:

We shouldn’t collect economic information under the pretext of security.

Clinton previously said:

We are on the verge of having the worst of all worlds: we’ll have no security and no privacy.

And he’s not the only president to slam the NSA.

Jimmy Carter said that NSA spying on Americans meant that “America has no functioning democracy”.

Clinton’s VP – Al Gore – says it constitutes “crimes against the Constitution of the United States”. And even Senate Intelligence Chair Dianne Feinstein is opposed to spying on allies.

It would seem to me that a country with maglev commuter trains wouldn't have much use for the industrial secrets of a country that couldn't keep the lights on at the Super Bowl.

Bush/Pea brain from Indy, Clinton/Gore, Bush/Cheney, Obama/Biden are/were plain and simply pimps; doing the bidding for their masters.

Political, industrial, technological, international espionage is a mainstay of US foreign/domestic policy since our nation's inception.

Each and every one of the above mentioned hypocrites are self serving money/power hungry disgraces to their own country.

The reliance on a vast spy network is common knowledge.

To play dumb now, in 2013, is just insulting.

Re-education camps for All of them and their spawn.

25 years should do the trick.

God how I miss the simple, glorious days of unabashed freedom and governmental restraint under Bill and Hillary.  Once you toss out the slaughter of innocent civilians at Waco and Ruby Ridge, heck, old Bill was practically Ghandi.

Clinton is a much as traitor as the rest of the Presidents starting with Nixxon. His first terrorist act was signing daddy Bush's fast tracked, NAFTA. Hillary is a clone, Free Trader, loves the pipeline, a major Hawk and on and on. She is actually the perfect Repubican candidate.

Well, in a few short years Billary will be back in the White House. Do you think you he and wifey will roll up their sleeves and get busy rescinding even one iota of what they helped put in place?

Hope and change... hope and change.

Oh, btw... I own a bridge in Brooklyn... interested parties feel free to shoot me an email and we can work out the details.

Dear Mr. Washington, I believe you have discovered the tippy-top of my tin-foil hat.  I am quite convinced that the U.S. security apparatus does not work for the American People.  Given what we know of purposeful lies in the run-up to the Iraq invasion, and Colin Powell's view that George Tenet lied to him, I am forced to wonder exactly where the truth is being told.  To expose a little more of my hat, I believe there is a cadre of past intelligence professionals who currently have links within the system and powerful influence (read dollars) from benefactors.  This is our shadow government.  It involves long-term loyalties and focused ideology.  Whether it is heirarchical or dispersed in organization, I cannot say, but I am quite convinced it exists.  Do I think the very pinnacle of our intelligence apparatus would lie to us?  Ask James Clapper.  Does it lie to Congress?  The President?  I don't know, but would guess that yes, the U.S. intelligence apparatus lies to Congress and the POTUS.  Is that a problem?

I expect the NSA had compromising photos of Chief Justice John Robert's "peccadillo" in the wrong orifice, which would explain how a supposedly strict constructionist could declare an abomination like UsurperCare constitutional, even though it's an obvious flagrant violation of Article 1, Sections 7, 8 & 9.

Wow.

That makes me feel a whole lot better coming from a guy that also came close to starting WWIII during his Presidency in Bosnia and all the lies that went with it over the Serbs "ethnic cleansing" of the Croatians while the U.S. military and NATO was instrumental doing all of it and putting the blame on Serbian leaders.  Too bad Assad doesn't bring that point up given what has happened with him lately?

Oh yeah and that Mena drug cartel thing when he and his wife were in Arkansas working for the Rose Law firm and all the people that disappeared before, during and after his two terms in the White House...

Having been frequently in a position to benefit from economic information collected by our government for the benefit of domestic industry I'd have to say this practice has been going on for decades.  Maybe it just came to Clinton's attention.  But one of the primary interelationships between the financial and political elites is the use of governmental powers is to improve the competitive advantage of US industry.

Where the hell have people been all these years?

I have often wondered if the small digital tuner and spy deviced provided Comcast when the went from analog to digital a couple of years ago contains a camera, as well as a detector for the remote. I have however found that poining this small box away from my field of view does not inhibit my ability to change the channel. My guess is that if there is a camera behind the smoked lens, then it cannot see sideways.

They are all pretty much the same, sock puppets for the true controllers, with a few variations in style and approach.

Style and approach have nothing to do with substance.

Watch some Bill HIcks on the subject - funny as hell, but absolutely dead on.

This is the most important question. I can easily believe the NSA is doing the things they are rumored to be doing but if they aren't working for the DC pols who is giving their marching orders? Human nature says it wasn't a bunch of mid level managers that went off reservation and decided to blackmail their controllers. Someone has to be directing the show. There are many candidates but no clear answers.

When one examines the power structure a little deeper one realizes that the plans are coordinated globally and over multiple generations. Benjamin Disraeli commented in the mid 1800s that the world is not ruled by those whom most people assume rules it.  JFK said the same, later. Edward Teller was neck deep in it. He was well aware of the deception and a part of it.

We have been given a full explanation through ancient texts and The Bible, but most people cannot concieve that the explanations that perfectly fit the circumstances are true. The explanations do not meet our modern-day paradigm.

There is a "real" battle going on. We simply and typically cannot perceive it.

I have noticed an eerie calm in the media and among our elected officials, which I find highly unusual considering our sorry state of affairs. I know the media loves or did love the president, I know that some are afraid to criticize him for fear of being labeled a racist, but this cannot possibly explain the near silence. This is why I believe that black mail on some unbelievable level is most likely taking place. Oh, and I have my webcam blacked out.

I don't have a webcam, but if I did, it would plug in through USB, just like the mic I have.  I built my own computer.  I also run Gentoo, so I have control over the drivers at the kernel level.  That being said, I wouldn't be too worried about them getting into my computer and listening to me.  The amount of hardware that it would take to do that to everybody is beyond a logistical nightmare, and most people are dumb enough to volunteer all sorts of shit to the internet anyway.

Sorry for the downvote but I'm not sure that would be effective. Also, sticking tape over your webcam: I'd use sticky metal foil as is used on duct work. The reason being that black electrical tape might look opaque to you and I but I know that many cheap camcorders don't incorporate IR filters so even when blacked out to visible light some can record "greyscale" images from the IR range. I'm guessing some can record UV also, so if you really want to be sure no light is reaching your camcorder you need metal foil that isn't super-thin.

The reason that I downvoted is that webcams could be driven from the BIOS even if the OS isn't configured to use them.

What the heck, let's have another Meshuggah song. Meshuggah - The Demons Name is Surveillance

I think the msm love for the President could be enough but when together with the fear of being labeled racist, there need not be any other factors. Black mail? If anything, the msm has the upper hand with black mail. The power of the press can be more powerful than the POTUS if used collectively against the President. The President's only recourse is to suspend their privilege to cover as has been done in Venezuela, Russia, Cuba, and China.  But of course, that wouldn't fly here.

Perhaps I am not just an old (70) 'Luddite' for not getting a mobile phone, nor any other "latest deVIICE", but rather just staying with my land-line and ADSL PC.

And maybe I wasn't so wrong to ditch Facebook when that was still possible, along with Skype and my web cam.

Best of luck with all of yoos who went for the latest fad and best of luck preventing and eliminating infections if you don't have a combination of Malwarebytes, Microsoft Security Essentials (if you run Windows) and Uniblue Powersuite (for cleaning your system safely), because since I installed these products about five years ago, I have had zero problems.

I have no idea how and if these will work with other gadgets than PCs, but I am offering my experience for free ... as with MSE, basic Malwarebytes and a trial of Uniblue.

All I know is that I am apparently safe from intrusions by not getting latest gadgets and by installing what I have mentioned.

Disclosure: I have no commercial interest, other than that Uniblue gave me a month's extension on my subscription for endorsing their product elsewhere.

A comment from the Raspberry Pi archives:

"When you effectively move your entire driver onto a coprocessor rig, running a completely opaque software stack with direct hardware access and start calling the shim a driver, that doesnt seem like a compromise to someone that actually cared about being able to audit their software stack, even if it’s technically compliant it’s still completely ‘useless’ as one commenter said."

Congratulations, you now have your balls in Broadcom's hands instead of whoever's they were in before.

Absolute computer security is completely unaffordable to 99.99% of the worlds population.

Granted, you're now safe from the most common criminal malware. My advice is to treat all internet connected "personal" (lol) computers as interns seconded from a rival firm who's mother works for the local police department and father works for the NSA.

Industrial espionage: Its an open secret in Germany that the US is after each and every entity doing research (company, person, public funded reserach institutes) .

In the US its the usual  practise that universities etc do file each year a hugh number of patents thus strengthening the economical position of the US. In Germany its acomparable  rare case because researchers have since long realized that their results are scooped up and are often used by US companies to front-run possible patent applications. So German reserchers prefer simplyu to publish their results. At least this guarantees, that their work is not commercial exploited by crooks. An example of such a case was the free publoished MP3 format.

A real important invention is of course most endangered. It can happen in such a case that  the invention is officially confiscated and declared as secret. The inventor has to shut-up or he is getting severly punished, he gets no compensation at all. However his techniques and results do somehow miracously  over time find a way into commercial applications in the US. There is no chance to do anything against it.  There exists no chance to do something against it because the label "secret" stops definetly all legal action.

But there exists no case that Germany ever complained about such practises. Simply for the fact that most probably it is the right of the US to act like this on German territory. Please do not forget, that Germany is not a partner but a defeated country. There exist  till now only a cease fire agreement and secret contracts between the US/UK as occupying forces and defeated Germany. But no peace agreement which would give back to Germany full sovereignity. So there is nothing the Germans have in their hands to complain about. Their fault is, that generations before WWII was lost by Germany and therefore they have to bear occupation till today.
