Is the U.S. Government Changing the Amount In People’s Financial Accounts with Its Offensive Cyber Capabilities?

George Washington's picture

Background:

Hidden in the report which the White House panel on NSA released today is a stunning implication:  that the U.S. government has been using its massive offensive cyber capabilities to change the amounts held in financial accounts and otherwise manipulating financial systems.

Specifically, the panel’s report states (page 221):

(1) Governments should not use surveillance to steal industry secrets to advantage their domestic industry;

(2) Governments should not use their offensive cyber capabilities to change the amounts held in financial accounts or otherwise manipulate the financial systems ….

The government certainly massively manipulates the economy and financial system.

There are already numerous examples of offensive cyber actions by the NSA:

As spying expert Trevor Timm from the Electronic Frontier Foundation Tweeted  (and Glenn Greenwald – who has seen the Snowden documents – re-tweeted):

Does this NSA report recommendation imply that NSA is conducting offensive cyber attacks against financial systems?

Remember, the NSA is tapping into and spying on the biggest financial payments systems such as VISA and Swift.

Top financial experts say that the NSA and other intelligence agencies are using information gained from spying to profit from this inside information. And the NSA wants to ramp up its spying on Wall Street … to “protect” it.

Whose money, exactly, is the NSA “protecting” … and how are they protecting it?

What about the money of people that the U.S. government considers undesirables?

The FedRes is as much part of the Govt. as Federal Express is.

It is a PRIVATELY owned bank cartel.Owned by the banks, for the benefit of the banks.

No constitional ammendment  will change that ,as it is extra constitutional anyways.

this article suggests that the nsa could, in principle, credit the account of an organization simply by making an entry in a digital account

that very notion boggles the mind

the receiving organization would, in effect, receive un-earned money that was created out of thin air

such an arrangement would be terribly unfair to those of us who have to earn money

it would also be fraudulent, insofar as the new "money" was simply conjured up. kind of like counterfeiting, really.

the creation of a new supply of money in this way would devalue existing money, since prices are based on supply and demand.

so obviously the nsa does not engage in such an activity.

because it would be wrong.

You are indeed correct. The NSA is the good guys. The good guys do right, not wrong. Therefore the NSA does not do these things, as it would be against truth, justice, and the American way. The logic is unassailable.

good find

from the article:

"Paypal erroneously credited the 56-year old Chris Reynolds ... $92,233,720,368,547,800. If that colossally huge amount of money is really his, then he would have been the richest man in the world, "by an astronomical margin"."

correction: would have been the richest man in the world *for now*

to beam-me-up ..

you are saying that QE is kind of like the hypothetical nsa digital creation of money by merely entering a number on an account?

but that cannot possibly be true

as mister greenspan-mitchell explained to me, not only is the FRN backed by the FFC of the us, it is also backed by its purchasing power and hence is backed by the entire gdp of the us and all other nations that use or peg to the FRN

Audit the Fed then.  How do you know they aren't already creating 850 billion per month and only saying its 85 billion per month?  For all we know we could really be at 1500% debt/GDP instead of 105%.  But who would know other than the Fed bankers and the people they give the money too?  Shhh, don't tell anyone, its a SECRET!

The President only chooses from a slate of candidates that the Federal Reserve Board of Governors provides to him. The Fed completely controls who is on that list and the votes are based on the votes of the Boards of the various district Feds. Don't forget, the Federal Government owns ZERO shares of the Federal Reserve Corporation. Only the "member financial institutions" own shares, in proportion to their capital.

That's a yes-or-no question.  As usual for the scared little Tyler children, their "article" presents no evidence in either direction.

The 1987 Black Friday crash was the reason to implement a "circuit breaker" system for stock trading halts.  Congress doesn't worry about nitty-gritty like how many points it has to move before it halts for a certain period, etc.  That was for the SEC to work out after proposing something and considering the public comments.  But way at the very end of the federal statute giving the SEC authority to issue circuit-breaker regulations was an item I've never seen anyone mention.  It was just two sentences of federal law that gave the 1987 SEC the authority to change "financial reporting, etc." for reasons of national security.  Et cetera?

The same authority was eventually given to CFTC.  But the U.S. has been in a state of war ever since the 2001 AUMF.  There's plenty in the various "Patriot Acts" and AUMFs and NDAAs to expand the government's wartime powers as compared to 1987.

When the government yanks rates around you can expect people to get burned. Maybe the best connected don't get badly burned, but little guys who are bothering the well connected are another story.

kudos for recognizing 1987 as the turning point. Reagan created the President Working Group on the Financial Markets, provided liquidity during the crash, and the reach and over reach has been a constant ever since. for years critics were complaining of the plunge protection policy, (secret Fed trading activity to boost market corrections) by 2008 their suspicions were run over by a reality ten times greater than anyone of them could imagine. makes you wonder whats next and on what order of magnitude will it surpass the control they already have?

Usually when one arm of the government says another arm shouldn't be doing something, they're doing it. You're not going to be handed the examples. And it's not as if the government hasn't picked winners and losers when it comes to money this past 250 years. They just need to convince the losers they're not losing, because they outnumber the winners by a wide margin.

Check: March 9, 1933, Roosevelt issued Proclamation 2040. (Emergency War Powers)

But did we ever live outside of war?  Jackson closed the 1st Bank US and Madison flipped on opposing the second Bank US during the war of 1812. Lincoln fought with the Greenback, Wilson gave it away in 1913 and Kennedy died trying to get it back to the Treasury.  When if ever were we not in a war of financial conquest?

Target: 40 million credit cards compromised

http://money.cnn.com/2013/12/18/news/companies/target-credit-card/

The thieves reportedly gained access to data on the magnetic strips of shoppers' cards, potentially allowing them to produce counterfeit versions, according to Krebs.

The thieves could also potentially withdraw cash from ATMs using counterfeit debit cards if they were able to intercept PIN data from Target, he said.

NSA...... why do you let this happen? If you see something... Say something, right?
