Wave of Radiation from Fukushima Will Be 10 Times Bigger than All of the Radiation from Nuclear Tests Combined

George Washington's picture

There was no background radioactive cesium before above-ground nuclear testing and nuclear accidents started.

Wikipedia provides some details on the distribution of cesium-137 due to human activities:

Small amounts of caesium-134 and caesium-137 were released into the environment during nearly all nuclear weapon tests and some nuclear accidents, most notably the Chernobyl disaster.

Caesium-137 is unique in that it is totally anthropogenic. Unlike most other radioisotopes, caesium-137 is not produced from its non-radioactive isotope, but from uranium. It did not occur in nature before nuclear weapons testing began. By observing the characteristic gamma rays emitted by this isotope, it is possible to determine whether the contents of a given sealed container were made before or after the advent of atomic bomb explosions. This procedure has been used by researchers to check the authenticity of certain rare wines, most notably the purported “Jefferson bottles”.

As the EPA notes:

Cesium-133 is the only naturally occurring isotope and is non-radioactive; all other isotopes, including cesium-137, are produced by human activity.

What people call “background” radiation is really the amount of radiation deposited into the environment within the last 100 years from nuclear tests and nuclear accidents (and naturally-occurring substances, such as radon).

2,053 nuclear tests occurred between 1945 and 1998:

Above-ground nuclear tests – which caused numerous cancers to the “downwinders” – were covered up by the American, French and other governments for decades. See this, this, this, this, this and this.

But the amount of radiation pumped out by Fukushima dwarfs the amount released by the nuclear tests.

As nuclear engineer and former nuclear executive Arnie Gundersen notes, the wave of radioactive cesium from Fukushima which is going to hit the West Coast of North America will be 10 times greater than from the nuclear tests (starting at 55:00).

This graphic from Woods Hole in Massachusetts – one of the world’s top ocean science institutions – shows how much more cesium was dumped into the sea off Japan from Fukushima as compared to nuclear testing and Chernobyl:

(And Fukushima radiation has arrived on the West Coast years earlier than predicted.)

The Canadian government has confirmed in October that Fukushima radiation will exceed “levels higher than maximum fallout” from the nuclear tests.

The party line from the Japanese, Canadian and American governments are that these are safe levels of radiation.   Given that those countries have tried to ban investigative journalism and have tried to cover up the scope of the Fukushima disaster, people may want to investigate for ourselves.

For example, Gundersen notes that the U.S. government flew helicopters with special radiation testing equipment 90 days after the Fukushima meltdown happened.  The government said it was just doing a routine “background radiation” check, but that it was really measuring the amount of “hot particles” in the Seattle area (starting at 27:00). Hot particles are inhaled and become very dangerous “internal emitters”. The government then covered up the results on the basis of “national security”.

As the Washington Department of Health noted at the time:

A helicopter flying over some urban areas of King and Pierce counties will gather radiological readings July 11-28, 2011. [Seattle is in King County.] The U.S. Department of Energy’s Remote Sensing Laboratory Aerial Measurement System will collect baseline levels of radioactive materials.

Some of the data may be withheld for national security purposes.

Similarly, the Department of Homeland Security and National Nuclear Security Administration sent low-flying helicopters over the San Francisco Bay Area in 2012 to test for radiation. But they have not released the results.

Indeed, residents of Seattle breathed in 5 hot particles each day in April of 2011 … a full 50% of what Tokyo residents were breathing at the time:

(the video is from June 2011.)

After all, the reactors at Fukushima literally exploded … and ejected cladding from the reactors and fuel particles. And see this.

Gundersen says that geiger counters don’t measure hot particles. Unless the government or nuclear scientists measure and share their data, we are in the dark as to what’s really going on.

"Keep Portland Weird".

Portland is using Land Use Laws to get to the modern equivalent of a walled city.

To keep the Riff-Raff out.

Things should have been good for another 20 - 25 years, until it would get Detroited.

So it's a race between the FED and Fukushima as to who screws up America first.

Like the good old saying goes, "he who pisses in ocean gets it back in his salt."

Sadly the energy 'problem' has been a farce for decades.  Thorium reactors are clean, safe, cheap, reliable, and the fuel is abundant.  I suppose it makes it difficult to control the world via A21 when energy is not nearly as scarce or dirty as we are led to believe.

steveo77's picture

thorium is not clean, nor safe.   Its better than uranium but they both suck.

thorium make rad waste just like uranium, and there is no solution to that.

One other tidbit I picked up somewhere....you won't believe this one!

The blueprints for the plant are tucked away in an office in the Reactor 1 building.  Since the core lost cooling and melted down on the 3/11/11 event day, the building is far too radioactive for anyone to enter the building.  Could be that's why they pumped cooling water into the wrong pipes initially while the core was melting.

Bottom line, they have no plans for how the plant is constructed.

Additional bottom line; we're fucked.

No big deal,  just raise the "Safe Ceiling" on Radiation and spend more time on the East side of town... the Easter the better.

Not only did the coverup the initial disaster, they covered up and are covering up to a vast degree the ongoing releases.

Now these rocket scientists have decided that the way to get rid of Plutonium is to lace the uranium fuel with 7% plutonium to burn it up.   One big problem....these reactors are far more likely to blow up in a nuclear chain reaction that is out of control.

Anyone of the reactors in the USA can turn into a deadly radiation cannon.   Here is the PROOF that Fukushima was a nuclear explosion.    The proof uses data from the EPA, Argonne National Lab, Gundersen, and common sense.   Check it out, spread the word.

(where the hell do you get iodine and what good is it?)

Save_America1st's picture

Survival Shield pure nascent iodine...purest that is currently made.  I've been taking this for 3 months now to build it up in my system.

MeelionDollerBogus's picture

only protects your thyroid & only short-term. There is no protection for long-term exposure. Escape is the only option.

New World Chaos's picture

Careful with that stuff.  Long term overexposure to iodine can cause health problems of its own.  By all means use it for 3 months after a fission event, because at least it won't fry you, but Fukushima fission has been on "percolate" since 2011.  The iodine-131 from 2011 is long gone by now.  Good to have a stash of iodine though.  The spent fuel pool is one screwup away from doomsday.

plus takes lots of vitamins..

I last saw potassium in a chemistry lab; was somewhat more volatile than sodium when added to water!

Its too late for that.    That is an immediate fix for one type of radiation, there are many.    Most can be fought, took me over  day of research to figure it out.     Read here on how you can fight the radiation, which is already here and getting worse.

As a young machinist perfecting the way to mass-produce the titanium gunbolts used on the AH-60 'Apache' helicopters, my mentors taught me the health benefits of Prussian Blue (as well as the way to check metal-to-metal contact points).

Kind of strange, though, the girls didn't want me to touch them. My fingernails used to actually store the stuff, and they thought it was 'dirty'. Later, I heard that one got breast cancer, and one got lung cancer, and one needed a hystorectemy due to ovarian cancer. Too bad, I suppose.

Reptil's picture

yeah detoxification might help, mitigate some of the contamination.
however, you'd have to take zeolite for thousands, tens of thousands of years.

spreading the contamination out over a large area in the biotope so it can't be cleaned up is one of the dumbest descisions of our (now dying) species.
"the solution to polution is dillution" is the industry mantra. inmediate, short term effect is that it seems that the contaminants disappeared (magically).
however... that is not the case. it accumulates in the foodchain, as living organisms have a tendendcy to "soak it up".

and if one of these fuel fleas is in your bloodstream, it's game over. it'll end up in bone marrow, or testicles. if, after your death you're cremated the particle is set free again into the atmosphere.
because of the use of seawater to cool the raging cores, so called "buckey balls" were formed, with a radioactive emitter inside, locked, elecrically neutral... floating around.

STILL some can be done to limit the spread somewhat. this requires a complete PARADIGM SHIFT, and pooling of resources to tackle this multitude of problems.
otherwise, leaving the iAEA in charge, which is just COVERING UP the emerging cancer epidemic, we're toast.

I really think we're being thrown off this planet. ironically, partially by our own doing.

steveo77's picture

Agreed, by in an acute environment, there are things that you can do to drastically minimize your internal exposure.

double posting - scuse me

The "good" iodine goes to your thyroid and keeps the "bad iodine" from lodging there. The bad or radioactive iodine-131 absorbed in your thyroid can cause numerous problems for your body due to the constant radiation of a gland that controls your metabolism. Intake of good iodine will load your your thyroid for about 24 hours and not let the thyroid be damaged. Intake of iodine-131 can still radiate your body but it won't be as much damage as what can happen to the thyroid. Google it.

So what was the official Woods Hole consensus on anthropologic global warming?

Not_Sure's picture

As frightening as the Woods Hole graph is, I sure wish people would refrain from posting charts with only one axis. It only allows the data to tell half the story. What is the horizontal axis? Distance? Time? Phase of the moon? What? I couldn't determine it from the article and it REALLY matters to those who look at data all the time.

gdpetti's picture

Well, history repeats until its lessons are learned. This type of coverup was found in the BP Gulf spill, which continues... and if you want to see a radioactive example, go back to the coverup after we nuked Japan in WW2. They stopped the Japanese press from taking photos, samples etc to find out what happened to them and still to this day, the survivors have to fight in court for the lab results that our govt took of these 'lab rats'.

Purgatory is a real bitch, love it or leave it....  if you can know how. The mirror awaits but only those that have gone down the rabbit hole first. One lesson at a time.

Yenbot's picture

-= the survivors=-

You called out the elephant in the room, GD.

The coverup of Hiroshima, Nagasaki, above-ground testing, Chernobyl and Fukushima has really covered up a strategic fact: the surviviors.

What the survivors show is that Mutually Assured Destruction is crap.

The release of a few hundred nuke bombs will raise background for the perpetrating survivors, resulting in less-pleasant but already inevitable end-of-life scenarios, and accelerated evolution of offspring.

It will completely and permanenetly eliminate the target populations near point-of-impact, and their industrial capacity, immediately.

While the average citizen lives in mortal fear of nuke war, the leadership already knows it is doable, and survivable.

What keeps the bombs asleep is the Love. Can you feel the Love, baby?

TradingTroll's picture

If you're backward-looking you can say people survived these events. But the amount of nuke plants  that are waiting to meltdown or poorly discarded bombs/drums of waste that will crack open dwarfs the amount released. Noone knows if the future is survivable because the data is secret.

AGuy's picture

"But the amount of nuke plants that are waiting to meltdown or poorly discarded bombs/drums of waste that will crack open dwarfs the amount released."

Yes, The Bombs will kill the majority living in citys. The Spent Fuel pools will Kill everyone else that survives.

The real news gets squashed because unfortunately once the genie's out of the bag there is no way to stop it from going wherever and they don't want mass panic or do anything to reduce GDP.  So people in it's path breathe in these particles, and some will get sick and some will not, but whether someone gets tumors, leukemia, other types of cancer and illnesses, it can't be conclusively pinpointed to Fukushima.  Life in this modern age is part guinea pig.

Save_America1st's picture

Thank you George Washington for continuing to stay up on this massive disaster and the lies of the collective goverments and media around the world.  We're in big trouble from Fukushima, folks...and it's not going away anytime soon...not for centuries.

This stuff is going to continue spewing out of that site for decades to come.  All blowing westward and flowing through the entire Pacific.

I hope people are stocking up on iodine for their thyroids...especially necessary for children who are at biggest risk of tyroid cancer because they are young and their thyroid while devloping is much more susceptible to radiation.

And check this out:
