.."Once in Royal David’s City stood a lowly cattle shed,
where a mother laid her baby.
You’d do well to remember the things He later said.
When you’re stuffing yourselves at the Christmas parties,
you’ll laugh when I tell you to take a running jump.
You’re missing the point I’m sure does not need making;
that Christmas spirit is not what you drink.

So how can you laugh when your own mother’s hungry
and how can you smile when the reasons for smiling are wrong?
And if I messed up your thoughtless pleasures,
remember, if you wish, this is just a Christmas song.

Hey, Santa: pass us that bottle, will you?"..

Merry Christmas William, we would all do well to remember there is only one plumb and one level when we set our sights to build anything..

I don't think anyone needs to worry about the chart of your course, keep fighting the good fight.

The State can only be useful to society if it draws it's legitimacy from it's smallest increment the individual, and we will not see change from the present day grotesque apparition it has morphed into unless the interests of the individual once again becomes the true seat of power.

I am not convinced of a happy ending but like you said, what's the alternative- to meekly close the door from the inside trying not to notice the faint odor of gas?

Merry Christmas and thanks for the impeccable, inspired work- you are a truly useful artist.

Hedge fund titan, giant of philanthropy leaps to his death after stroke

Multimillionaire philanthropist Robert W. Wilson, 86, took his own life Monday by throwing himself from his luxury Upper West Side high-rise apartment, just a few months after suffering a debilitating stroke, sources said.

The former Wall Street hedge fund titan — who donated hundreds of millions to charity — left a note before leaping at about 11 a.m. from the 16th floor of the famed San Remo, which overlooks Central Park West, cops said.

So far just today, Flickr has clocked 974,000 Banzai7 views. That number has to be more than a blip on their radar screen. The people who are posting top notch soft porn images are hard pressed to match that.

I know there is an ad model that this kind of traffic supports. But frankly, I don't like that model because I want nothing to do with the "evil people" who are running it. You know who I am talking about.

So we are talking about an image posting website that will have to be independently crowd funded indefinitely. And it will need tech support to keep it clean.

Flickr provides an unlimited amount of bandwith for free. It allows me to manage how the images are used by others. And it also draws substantial traffic flow. They are supposedly focused on optimising cross platform viewing. Which leads me to think the current situation is a hiccup.

For them, it has to be unacceptable that for the past few days my iPad keeps crashing when I load my ZH posts. I have complained and I hope they are paying attention.

So someone please tell me, what is the alternative I/we should be considering?

Wed, 12/25/2013 - 08:21 | 4274820 malikai
malikai's picture

It's not insurmountable. Flickr has shitloads of bells/whistles that once discarded, would clean it up nice and also make it much faster (and more importantly not inherently part of the 'eye').

The content (static images) is easy to cache and push to a CDN. All that is really required is a pair of frontends - one for management, one for viewing. Both are pretty easy to do scalably and inexpensively today, especially if you can do it without a full database.

The difficulty isn't in building it as such, it's in finding a non-idiot to do it who is available for the job.

BTW: 100k views of 50k images is about 5Gbytes of transit, which will probably cost about $0.10-15/gig on any decent CDN.

Wed, 12/25/2013 - 08:42 | 4274842 williambanzai7
williambanzai7's picture

Thanks for that.

One of the reasons I run a lean and mean set up the way I do is to maximise the time I dedicate to content generation. I am sure some would be very surprised at how much I am able to accomplish just using Flickr and an email account.

But I am fully aware that it is not optimal. I am also aware that many have sought the assistance of professional website developers who then proceeded to fuck everything up royally.

I will spend tomorrow trying to peal back whatever is causing the Flickr hiccups here. Up until now, one of the other benefits of Flickr has been general access. Other sites have had no problem using it to put up my images.

Wed, 12/25/2013 - 10:19 | 4274924 malikai
malikai's picture

Your second point is the one that usually gets people burned. Professional web development has devolved to the point of a few enterprisey paths that are riddled with scale and security problems: i.e. LAMP. The cost of delivering content goes up dramatically when you involve a database layer.

As you can see from the numbers above, it's not expensive to deliver the images. The expensive stuff comes from the development and systems involved (if poor choices are made).

So someone please tell me, what is the alternative I/we should be considering?

check-out.  at some point, you've said it all.  how many more GREAT pictures de-riding bernake and company?

the people that 'get it', 'get it'.  the one's that do not, never will.  otherwise, we would not have gotten to this point.

nobody seems to understand.  QE is LITERALLY $250 per month that every american citizen, whether 8 or 80 has spent,

after taxes a month, that they had no idea.  for 4 years.  and on going. cash.

photos of bernake as batman - well - the nike crowd will never, ever get it, and i know your intentions are to try to help them,

but we wouldn't have gotten here if they could have understood.  so, since you asked the question, i will give you my version of the answer.

silence is sometimes a virtue.

Photos of Bernanke as Batman? What an appalling thought.

You are not paying attention, I'm not not building anyone's ego. Ridicule is my forte. You will not find one Bernanke as Batman or superhero in my portfolio.

I don't expect much from the Air Jordon set. They are all players in the same con game. And I don't miss them at all.

But I do worry about my kids and my family and friends, friends here included.

You are welcome  to practice the silence you suggest.

But that is what they all did on the way to the ovens is it not.

Not me. Most definitely not me.

wb7 - man crush for your art.  man ray.  dali. duchamp.  the breugels. i don't say this easily.

big history.  rembrandt.  but what happened?  before there was the reformation, for over 1,000 years, artists had to paint or sculpt portraits of biblical themes.  the protestant reformation happened in the middle of rembrandts career (and others also).  suddenly these artists no longer had to make pictures of the blessed little baby jesus (yes, it is xmas, and i'm catholic and love him and celebrating also).  but, they could paint landscapes, or patrons, or wives, or even medical scenes.  and suddenly, the non-clergy would pay for 'art'.

and somehow, in my silly mind, it all comes back to what we have today. now.  because rembrandt got 'rich'.  and he has cash.  and he didn't know what to do with it.  and he invested in (bitcoins, oops, no.) and (facebook, oops, no.) tulip bulbs. and then he went bust.  really.  look it up.  and if you go to the 'rembrandt house' today in amsterdam and read the fine print, he was bust, and no, he did not live their at the end of his life, or for many years before that.

My situation is different from Rembrandt.

I already know what the fiat high life smells like and I have chosen a different path for myself. The best way to describe it is, just doin what makes me happy. And I do lots of things, not just this.

And, almost forgot...I am not a master painter ;-)

It's only been slow for maybe a week.

I use Firefox 26, but tried IE with the same url and it seemed even slower. With all the traffic you generate over at flickr, if you open a support ticket with them, you'd think you should get an answer if this is just something they'll be straightening out soon.

For some reason scribd dropped support for flash embed code in favor of html5. Ever try scribd?

Tue, 12/24/2013 - 21:56 | 4274482 williambanzai7
williambanzai7's picture

Scribed is not an imagecentric site. When I was doing song lyrics and poetry I stored it all on scribd along with a treasure trove of documents and books I had accumulated.

Then one day they took me down for unspecified reasons.

And of course, there is no recourse when they do that.

A harsh lesson in cloud computing, well learned.

Wed, 12/25/2013 - 13:32 | 4275222 chunga

Well, to hell with scribd then. It sounds like you'll be able to fix it. Some others, with a way faster connection than I've got, report that images won't load at all. It's just a little slow for me (but worth the wait).

What a start to this day. My favorite dog, Iris, had a seizure for a few minutes. Pretty scary but she seems fine now. Phew...she's only 4 years old.

We love that dog and named her after this Iris right here.

Give me the names of the cocksuckers, I have a K98 that had 147 confirmed kills and up to 200 probables. Picked it up accidentally at a local pawn type gunshop a few years back. It has a Heimsoth scope with bullet trajectory calibrated in the scope, a wonderful thing to shot super long distance (700-800 yrds..

It sits in the corner in a gun case, it told me the other day that there is no differnce between commies or cronies when you look thru the scope! It is screaming for me to get it out and do some evil doers some lung shots.

Naw, just kidding, but I do have the described weapon.

Glad to read of the awesome amount of hits you are getting, the scrowl down of comments has become quite informative on the hazzards of storage and setting up a website,. I dealt into that stuff with a brainchild idea back before 2000, those fuckers drove me crazy on setting up the web site thing, with the attitude of a brain surgeon or Porsche mechanic when you wanted something done,
