The Santa Claus Lie – A Gateway Drug to Collective (Self) Deception

The Santa Claus Lie – A Gateway Drug to Collective (Self) Deception

By

Cognitive Dissonance

I spend what some might imagine is an inordinate amount of time thinking about lies and self deception. But from my point of view it is a fundamental flaw that cripples us as individuals and as a society. Lying and lies permeate our culture from top to bottom in ways we often never perceive and rarely wish to see. Essentially it is the foundational building block that supports all that is wrong with us and why we continuously repeat our oftentimes disastrous personal and societal mistakes. Deception, self and societal, is the fatal flaw, something we have come to call ‘being human’.

Do as I Say, Not as I Do

Consider for a few moments how often we as parents come face to face with the sometimes embarrassing problem of explaining to our young children why we tell public and private lies, but that they should not lie to us. How our telling a lie can actually be good under certain circumstances, such as shielding our self and others from a painful (self) truth or a blow to (our) their ego. What is often unspoken is that we lie to others in order to be lied to by others.

The odd thing is that if you were to ask random people on the street if they believed themselves to be honest you would get answers along the lines of “Yes”, “It depends”, “For the most part” or “Most of the time”. I suspect my readers have answered the question in a similar vein; I know this author has. We really do believe we are (basically) honest because we have willingly (eagerly?) deconstructed the dividing line between ‘honest’ and ‘dishonest’ and reformed it into a soft squishy malleable moving target somewhere near the center.

In other words we ‘know’ that stealing $1,000 from our employer or family is dishonest, but taking some pens and paper from the office or an old mechanics socket set from gramps………well, that isn’t really ‘stealing’ per se, just sort of borrowing on a semi permanent basis. Unless of course we want to believe that they ‘deserve’ to be stolen from, thus righting some previous wrong. Then all bets are off.

Half Truth

Seven Billion and Counting

The examples of personal and social dishonesty are as numerous and varied as the people who practice (self) deception, which pretty much means all of us. And while just about anyone can conduct a reasonably honest philosophical discussion about self and social dishonesty, few of us would reveal our deepest darkest secrets to even our closest friends, family or spouse because those secrets often revolve around overt or covert dishonesty, even if only to ourselves.

And then there is the self deception that we aren’t consciously aware of, clouded by both denial and social programming. While my previous articles have discussed denial ad nauseam I wish to focus a bit on the social programming aspect promoted mostly by herd behavior and alluded to by the title of this article.

I have long felt that religion was (and in many respects still is) a gateway drug to rampant self deception and public enabling of the cultural lie. Please understand that I am talking about manmade and man administered ‘religion’ and not about whether or not there exists a supreme being. But as the world’s population slowly drifts away from blind religious obedience and begins to recognize the inherent hypocrisy of those who promote religious fervor and division (my God way or the highway) another mind control mechanism has risen to take its place……...narcissistic consumerism based upon the lie of endless resources and ever increasing debt.

I propose that some of, if not most of, our lying behavior is programmed into us culturally by social acceptance of ‘harmless’ self deceptions such as the Santa Claus lie. The key is that the lie must be perceived as harmless or as causing less harm (a wonderfully relative term that can be made to accommodate any lie) than the ‘truth’ might cause to the victim of the lie. From that point on our own internal psychological rationalization and justification process takes over and we reform the lie into a (relatively) harmless half truth/white lie in our own ‘eyes’. Or at least a lie softened enough for most of us to stomach.

Of course this entire process is infinity more complex than I have just outlined and yet amazingly it is that simple. And it all starts when we as very young children begin to receive our own personalized imprinting courtesy of our initial programmers, our parents and primary care givers who themselves have been, and continue to be, imprinted by society at large and their inner social circle of personal peer review. From there it trickles down into our inner consciousness for final fine tuning and assimilation.

Truth Spelled Out

Infinite Creativity

We are all individual conscious entities engulfed within a herd of like minded individuals, interconnected yet separate, seemingly born without an operating manual yet infinitely capable of self expression, creativity and inspiration beginning at a very young age. We are born into this reality as individuals, yet we spend our entire lives trying to be just like the rest of the herd, a product of centuries (millennium?) of conditioning to ignore the innate knowledge and wisdom that springs from within in order to blindly follow the herd and the alpha directly ahead.

Seen from this perspective, something like The Santa Claus Lie has great utility in the conditioning process. Something that started out innocent enough, a tale of Saint Nichols, is slowly hijacked and commercialized by entities who wish to condition us in a way that creates ‘demand’ for products and services, many of which we do not need or even desire except for the fact that others in the herd are conditioned to believe they ‘need’ them, thus we do.

I find it endlessly fascinating that in ancient indigenous cultures the shaman or healer’s purpose was not just to administer the natural healing arts to his local tribe members, but to teach and guide the tribe to be emotionally and psychologically healthy and fit. Call it original sin, call it ‘being human’, call it herding behavior, but the shaman understood these self destructive tendencies and worked to help his people overcome this strange attraction in order to grow and blossom as powerful reality creators.

Intraspecific Kleptoparasites

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kleptoparasitism

Yet the modern sociopathic man, essentially parasitic individuals who present themselves as our so called ‘leaders’ and thus the ultimate in Intraspecific Kleptoparasites, (Kleptoparasitism may be intraspecific (the parasite is the same species as the victim) or interspecific (the parasite is a different species) make every effort possible to exploit and enflame the very human flaws ancient shaman tried to heal. At the very least the shaman helped the tribe be aware of, and thus better able to defend themselves from, their own psychological and emotional flaws.

Seen from the perspective of the larger battle between reality creating humanity and those who wish to subvert and control humans for the parasite’s own benefit, one must question everything and anything that presents itself as (innocent) cultural expressions.

We tend to think that large population ‘control’ is nearly impossible because there are so many different human (re)actions to control. The key to understanding how this is done is to recognize that subverted humanity is perusing what it believes is its own self interest rather than that of the parasites. Thus total control is not needed, just a deceptive nudge here and there to move the willingly compliant herd along in the general direction desired by the Intraspecific Kleptoparasites.

Cog I always enjoy your articles.

I too have gotten into disagreements with some of my more religious friends.  Yes I do believe in God but I do not believe the Holy Bible is the word of God.  The current Holy Bible is a construct of a roman emperor and his gathering of preists and leaders from some pagan religions.  They put it together and tossed many chronicles they deemed heretic or not necessary.  It is funny when I get some of my friends riled up over this even though this is indeed factual.  The Holy Bible is a construct of man not the word of God.  Dates were changed to get the so-called pagans of the time on board.

The ultimate question that really bothers my friends, and caused some of my friends to no longer be my friends was, what if the other religion is the correct one and we are worshiping the wrong religion?  The Hindus or the Muslims could be correct.  Ask that sometime and see the responses.

In the end most people want to be lead and no not want to lead.  We want to fit in!  I do not fit in and it causes me many problems.

The problem with lies, even "good intentioned" lies, is that once promoted they must be sustained and supported. This inevitably leads to more lies.

A "Chain Reaction of Lies" 1 Lie justifies another .. justifies another.. justifies another.. justifies another, isn't this how the present society is built and keeps "functioning"!?

It makes rational sense if you think about it, it's usually easier to "prove" 1 lie with another lie than with truth.

There is no doubt, that people which do not master the higher grades of lying are out side of the herd or do have only a minor status within the herd.

It is more difficult to tell a lie than to tell the truth. A good lie must be logical and the ultimate goal of a good lie is to get an advantage in some form or another. Therefore the lier when constructing and telling a lie needs to be fully aware of the complete necessary picture of all important circumstances connected to the lie he is producing. The persons involved , the situation, the time, what was said, what happend why etc.  Weighing all these circumstances and having the final goal in mind which the lier wants to reach in the shortest way possible  and at the same time formulating a good lie. Thats not easy.

Therefore the conculsion is. Good liers are very intelligent but their drive is not to change the world by active productive work. Thats much to hard for them. They are not good at this. The liers of this world take the much easier way. Instead of doing something productive which costs a lot of energy they prefer simply to change the thoughts of the people which are essential to reach the desired goal as fast as possible. The lier is clever but by all means he is a true parasite.

For the people which ar not good at lying there is not much left. They are not good at telling lies they do not have the necessary talent to be a good lier, their lies are easy to find out and to notice.    Their only way to survive is to lie as little as possible only when there is really no other way in sight.    Since they are not good in lying they have to be productive and ingenious. They are not good liers but many of them are extremely talented when it comes to shape their physical sorrounding in a way that is if of advantage for them. The non liers are the scientists, the tinkerers, the sucessful producers in short the productive part of the society. They are the part of mnakind the liers do feed on.

Therefore, the best liers are our leaders because it is always the lies that do rule the masses and not the truth. The super liers are at the top and this is it what mankind needs. A really sucessful politician needs to be a good lier.  People love of course honest politicians but they do not like to hear the truth. You have to tell the people what they want to hear and nothing else. Then they are going to vote for you.

The overwhelming majority of the people love the lie because they are at least quite good at it.    Women are in my opinion in general good at lying. Not that they do lie more than men but they arethe  better liers.  OK in most cases they do only small lies, plus they have a clear defined reason which is to have children with a man they believe has good genes and is supportive after giving birth. This justifies their little white lies.

So there is nothing to complain about for humanity. The way you make your bed determinates how you lie in it.

Besides that: The truth is a sharp sword!. Who is searching really for truth besides scientists and philosphers?   In principle nobody because the closer one comes to the truth the clearer it becomes it might have been better to have continued living with a lie.

And this was not a lie.

Yes, that is true. These people are faszinating but one has to be careful when dealing with them..  I knew once a guy who was so good and convincing in telling stories that I liked his company just to listen to his stories. Of course after a while I noticed that it was a lot of lies what he told, because it was nearly impossible that one man went through all these adventures and interesting jobs in a lifetime. Unfortunately he died a few years ago.

He lived in his own world with lots of fantasy and very convincing rhetoric. But of course he knew also a lot,  he was very intelligent and he had many talents. He was a very gifted artist and when he was really inside a work he lived his work with all he had. Besides that he was a strong smoker, while drinking he reduced in the last years.

He was a very faszinating personality. He lived for many years on the street but did from time to time some work for rich people when he had no money at all anymore for tobacco. Then he started to work.  He was a hell of a guy and it was always a lot of fun to have a beer with him and joking around.

What I admired with him, he never had the idea that he had no future. He was always optimistic even in the worst situations he found something to believe in.

Talk about dropping a grenade in the lake to see what floats up.. heh

I'm going to take the other side and state that Santa Claus is one of the most powerful myths of western culture, for it teaches a very important lesson at an early stage of life, i.e., don't believe everything you see or hear, especially when presented on a grand scale.

I'll go even further (out on a limb) and state that the reason Santa Claus makes some people nervous is that the discovery of that myth often leads to questions regarding certain other myths presented as truth.

I don't really need to spell this out do I?

As I see it, Santa Claus works the same way as a vaccine, and we all know the importance of innoculating young children, right?

This is a major reason I have almost completely stopped to interact with society. You simply cannot talk to anybody nowadays without telling them bold face lies and hearing bold face lies in return, .. so what's the point.

Whey you do say the truth for a change, you will be labelled a whacko and ostracised or even worse if the wrong people hear it you might loose a job or friends.

All the Political Correctnes BS and all the Common Knowledge BS derives directly from what you have described in the article, apart from very few "anonymous" internet sites like ZH, there is little to no chance to openly express your self, and even ZH is falling back on this with the crap "Racial Discrimination" policy.

We might not have a proper religious Inquisition any more but an informal Inquisition is very well alive in society, there are so many Tabu subjects that the only things you can freely speak about are Sports and Weather.

This Society has tied a large boulder around it's neck and is threading deeper and deeper into a swamp it does not have a plan or even an intention to exit. I don't know what will come 1st, a natural global catastrophe or a man made extinction event but this can only end 1 way for a culture that only exists on the good whims of fortune.

Interesting documentary on an archeological dig I once saw related how the inhabitants within a walled city left bones that showed they had lived good lives while the bones of the less fortunate and more numerous immediately outside the city walls showed the opposite.  No surprise there, but the shock came as further digs in the jungles surrounding the city showed that those that chose a jungle life instead of clinging to the scraps caste off by the city lived almost as well as the city elite.  Keep in mind that no physical barrier blocked the poor masses from wandering off into the jungles to forge their own path, they had simply become accustomed to their lot.

I enjoyed where you were going with that CG.  I believe what you purport to be true.  I must ask one question though, what about working for large multinational corporations in a well paying managerial position?  What about the Santa Claus lie exactly bothers you?  That Santa Claus is a bold faced lie or that the lie is a potential short term economic boon which enable large corporations to be much more readily available to donate to political campaigns?

I told my own daughter that Santa Claus did not exist when she was six years old and she will be nine soon.  Oh sure, I received some heat for speaking the truth but it was the truth.  I do not know that she wanted to accept it but she knows and because we have such a broad spectrum of friends from various religions and parts of the world, it went by the wayside quickly.  It turns out that what I said three years ago is true and we can still have a nice holiday.  Not only that, I told her that we can just make up our own holiday any time we want and have a family event.  The result is that she trusts me, because now at age nine, most kids realize that Santa is not real.  My daughter remembers though that I told her the truth first.

How about we consider the Santa Claus like fallacy of corporatism?  I could only imagine being involved in Santa's little shop at the north pole?  There are just a handful of elves making toys for children at the north pole?  I have a few a logistical questions to ask regarding that business operation.  Corporate might be part of the problem as well.

Indeed, Manipuflation, it is quite odd, although consistent with living in a Bizarro Mirror World, regarding what socially accepted lies to tell children are approved, or disapproved of ...

I believe that our social stories ought to be told in such a way that they would lead us to be able to tell children more truth, as they got older, rather than have to drastically correct having previously misled them. However, since our dominating systems are based on HUGE LIES, it becomes extremely difficult to imagine the paradoxical nature of "education" that prepared children to develop critical thinking skills, since that would be quite diametrically opposed to teaching children to believe in what the "authorities" are "teaching," since that is almost all based on attempting to brainwash them to believe in the bullshit that will benefit the biggest bullies.

Anyway, regarding the story of Santa Claus, I thought I would point out this amusing article, about the history of the imperialistic information system struggles that has been behind most of the development of religions:

http://www.cannabisculture.com/content/2003/12/18/psychedelic-secrets-Sa...

The Psychedelic Secrets of Santa Claus

Some psychologists have discussed the "cognitive dissonance" which occurs when children are encouraged to believe in the literal existence of Santa Claus, only to have their parents' lie revealed when they are older. By so deceiving our children we rob them of a richer heritage, for the actual origin of these ancient rituals is rooted deep in our history and our collective unconscious. By better understanding the truths within these popular celebrations, we can better understand the modern world, and our place in it.

OF COURSE, THAT TENDS TO BE PIE IN THE SKY DAY DREAMING, THAT I ALSO TEND TO INDULGE IN, WHEN THE  REAL WORLD IS ALMOST TOTALLY DOMINATED BY THE TRIUMPHS OF HUGE LIES, BACKED UP WITH LOTS OF VIOLENCE ... AS ONE SPINS AROUND, THE INFINITE TUNNELS OF RADICAL TRUTHS ARE APPARENTLY JUST AS ENDLESS AS THE INFINITE TUNNELS OF DECEITS.

Anyway, almost every day, some young child will spontaneously point at me, and blurt out "Santa Claus."  That is why, during a general Federal election that took place during December, I had fun dressing up as "Santa Cannabis," as shown in a couple of photos which may be seen at the end of this article:

http://www.marijuanaparty.ca/article.php3?id_article=161

To get used to living in a Bizarro Mirror World, where almost everything is dominated by the biggest bullies' bullshit, takes an entire life time to barely begin to get used to. One of the problems that parents routinely face is how to balance telling their children more "truth" in the context where the real world that those children grow up in is almost overwhelmed by legalized lies, backed by legalized violence ... I would suggest that it is almost impossible to comprehend the degree to which we think about almost everything backwards, and therefore tend to try to teach children to think in ways which are as backwards as possible.

The background problem both for the parents themselves, as well as for their children who are just beginning to try to figure out how the world around them works, when they have to work their way through the degree to which they have to be afraid of the bullies, compared to how much they should believe the bullies' bullshit?

Given the degree to which the biggest bullies are able to assert ownership over resources, agreeing with their bullshit is often better for the individual in the short-term, than disagreeing, especially since the bullies' bullshit is backed by violence.

Just consider the symbolic case of cannabis ... Does a parent tell their child the radical truth, that the marijuana laws are based on lies, backed by violence, and that mostly the police and politicians are not their friends ... or does a parent tell their children that the lies are the truth, and that they should trust the biggest liars, because they are wealthy and powerful, and reward those who agree with their lies, while punish those who disagree with their lies.

Well, the answers are inside the on-going context of "it depends." It is not always clear when to "lie to the liars" or to tell children more radical truth about that their society is almost totally dominated by Huge Lies about almost everything, on level after level, as far as one investigates any important matter ...

If, "Know thy self." is the ultimate truth, there are the additional factors or challenges to the process. For example, change.

I am never twice the same person. The person I am today is not exactly the person I was yesterday. Am I lying to myself today? or was I lying yesterday. Perception.

When I thought I was being truthful yesterday and then, I realize I was wrong. Did I ly yesterday? What if my perceptions today are wrong, am I lying.

Are the best liars those who believe that what they are saying is true? Many teachers believing in American history actually teach it as if it were true. Are they all liars? When does being delusional make you a liar, or just plain wrong and misinformed? How do we know that all of us are misinformed? Should we all just keep our mouths shut?

If people believe they are telling the truth is that the only thing that matters?

What about point in time. If what I say yesterday was not true, but today something came to fruition and it is now true, was yesterday a lie or was my timing off?

"Are the best liars those who believe that what they are saying is true? Many teachers believing in American history actually teach it as if it were true."

Is there some hidden beef here?  Anyway...

A "liar" is someone who knowingly presents information that they know is false.  Someone can "appear" to be a liar but they might just be uninformed/ignorant.  And then there are those who don't give a shit, they'll just repeat some information because that's how they want it to be.

"What about point in time. If what I say yesterday was not true, but today something came to fruition and it is now true, was yesterday a lie or was my timing off?"

Depends on whether you say the same thing that you said yesterday or whether you say something that you now know to be "correct."  If you talk differently today then yesterday was an "error." (if I dug a post hole in the wrong place yesterday and then today I corrected it it would not mean that yesterday I was a "liar")

Lots of great questions. In my view it all comes down to knowledge and intent. Do I have knowledge that is contrary to what I am purporting as truth? Is my intent to hide that knowledge to gain leverage in some way?

If the answer is YES to both of those conditions it probably is a lie. Not always, but most likely.

Go talk to your farmer neighbor about small lies.
If he is a second generation farmer, he will tell you that if you farm you can't afford to lie about anything because nature does not recognize deceit.
That attitude will make him socially retarded, but intimately frank in his assessments of life and work.

Very good point! People who depend on Nature for their lively-hood, mostly those who live in rural areas are "plain" and honest because that's what's keeping them alive, contrary to people living in big urban areas where lies and deceit is what keeps them going.

Sooner or later Nature corrects All Wrongs, city people might get away with their perversions for a while but only to pay even more so for them when the reckoning comes.

Rural people probably don't have any more or less propensity to lie than anyone else.  Sample sizes.  Less people out in the rural areas, so frequency of encountering a non-honest person is less.

"Sooner or later Nature corrects All Wrongs"

People will eventually have to more closely reform/align with nature.

"city people might get away with their perversions for a while but only to pay even more so for them when the reckoning comes."

Not all "city people" are bad and or perverted.  A couple of my best friends (older Southern Baptists) live in the city.  And I live out in the country- I just recently received a nice little flyer from law enforcement that there's a child molester residing a short distance away.

My wife is from Manila.  I didn't see her family as being perverted.  Not everyone can live out in the country.

The "city" is going to be a tough environment to be in, that's for sure: and it ain't going to be no picnic out in the country either.

Even farmers must interact with people and conform to the mind set of which ever rural area they may live in.

Agreed. We are all tribe members subject to some sort of group think. The question is how well we retain our individuality in the face of the wave of group think. Short of living in an isolated cave and never coming out some assimilation is necessary. Doesn't mean I must surrender my essence.

Must you have to lie in order to assimilate?

Hmmm.  So you don't get laid unless you pursue and lie to FAT CHICKS?  Sad.

Why not lose weight yourself and improve your social skills.  Then deal honestly with cute chicks and actually get decent lays.

Bullshit. That is how you get pussy. When you are brutally honest and call their crap for what it is that, somehow, sparks ATTRACTION.

My wife asked me that question once....ONCE.

I replied, "No dear. Your FAT makes you look fat. It has NOTHING to do with the fucking dress. Lose some God Damned weight."

(I meant God. Damned. Weight. That is NOT the Lord's Name taken in vain. I meant every single word. Excess weight, is God Damned, as it is due to both the sins of Sloth and Gluttony.)

Believe it or not that is a LOVING STATEMENT. It may sound cruel. But it will give them incentive to take care of themselves.

If they are acting as a Bitch then you call them on it and put them in check.

Otherwise you will not be getting any pussy. They lose respect. And without respect there is no attraction. Without attraction there is no sex.

Ummmm.....yes, I agree, butt...........  :-)

May I restate the tease for this article? "What is often unspoken is that we lie to others in order to be lied to by others."

Why is the person asking someone if their ass is fat when clearly it is? Because they want external affirmation of their denial about their butt size and they want their ego stroked in the process. The fat assed person is asking to be lied to. This is emotionally immature behavior that is all too common.

During the height of my alcoholism 25 years ago I purposely became involved with females that would lie to me in exchange for my agreement to lie to them. I would support her dysfunction if she would support mine. Very sick. The similarities between the height of my insanity and today's culture are striking and just as deadly if pursued to the end.
