"The legacy music industry is another matter."

The legacy music industry is doing just fine my friend. Copyright was just extended to what? 70 years?

Copyright enforcement is bullshit business model given the state of affairs they brought on themselves. Their model is now obviously broken. The days of superstars owned by the music industry are numbered.

Amen.  Who holds the copyright on "Y'all Come Go With Us" or "In The Pines"?  "Jingle Bells" for that matter.  Who holds the patent on the screw thread?  Pretty sure Archimedes doesn't.  The idea of patent, copyright and trademarks is the domain of those our departed brother francis_sawyer got banned for speaking of.  Just sayin'.

Remember when John Fogerty lost that lawsuit for plagiarizing... himself?

The real artists don't give rat's ass about copyrights.  They'll always be way ahead of the copycats, and if they're not, they'll appreciate the adaptations.  You a lawyer or sumpin'?

You know what I mean. A sudden elite willingness to placate the lower end the pyramid by allowing them to indulge in a substance that is non-aggressive. A substance that has always been OK for the entitled ones. Everyone else put their liberty at risk in some way.

And what happened to all the bullshit about health issues that we heard for so many years? Enlightenment?

Expediency, that's what. The war on drugs was a big boondoggle. A huge waste for the benefit of certain vested interests. Now the priorities above have suddenly changed, urgently.

I don't believe the decision to liberalise like this is purely an accident or demographic shift. I am not against it at all. But the circumstances are worthy of consideration, particularly since I have known people who got burnt in different situations over the years.

IMHO...

And what happened to all the bullshit about health issues that we heard for so many years? Enlightenment?

I heard there has been a similar new controlled legalisation of growing, distribution and consumption in Spain for some time, I figured it was the result of dealing with the masses of kids soon to be like Greece, Italy and everywhere that's seen real signs of public discontent. And since Amsterdam decided to reclassify consumption illegal for tourists, I tend to look on these developments as a positive thing.

Questioning the premise of what's going on is where many (including myself) fall short. Fair point. It's a little creepy.

I have an alternative explanation. budget restraints. As you say, "The war on drugs was a big boondoggle. A huge waste for the benefit of certain vested interests."

And those vested interests are represented by the lobbyists of the private prison "industry".

For good or worse, the federal budget has to find it's way, i.e. cuts. And so we watch lobbyist groups attacking the jugular of other vested interests, 'cause something has to give

They will make room for the new class of domestic terrorists by releasing drug offenders.

Thu, 01/09/2014 - 07:42 | 4314735 Ghordius
Ghordius's picture

I'm not that sure about that. look, think it through: we have endless articles about both the US budget and the value of the dollar, or the value of resources in general

de facto the US was able to use more resources than it's own thanks to european central banks support, which then switched (post-EUR) to Chinese cb support

de facto any frozen or non-strongly-increasing budget item is in reality shrinking

Uncle Sam is in a resource re-allocation phase (not the only one, but the one least used to it), even if this is not that easy to calculate

so the question is: where are "peaks" declared? Peak Prisons? Peak Social Spending?

Peak Fleets, for example? See how Japan and China are "helping" to propagandize the absolute need for a Fifth Fleet. That's the same region that the British Empire first evacuated, retrenching to Singapore and leaving a newly found ally, Japan

G, as always, find your alternate POV to challenge the dominant paradigm of skepticism most refreshing.    the question that comes to mind with your approach in this case is that the prison infrastructure is already built : what is going to happen to this as the WAR ON DRUGStm winds down?   what is the alternative "productive" use for the infrastructure?   condos?

i think i know where Bill is going with his questioning, and it ain't pretty.

Thu, 01/09/2014 - 12:49 | 4315633 Ghordius
Ghordius's picture

thanks. regarding your counterquestion, that's a headache, isn't it? yet something has to give. the Brits had the same problem when their "liberal empire" (actually more of a commonwealth of the wealthy) was not able anymore to ship every vagrant and shoplifter to Australia

eventually, banks have to recognize losses and both them and countries have to economize. it's a painful process

at a certain point, if every department wants to be responsible for "state security"... well, then someone will start to propose to merge them. plenty of historical precedents

both the UK, the US and several other countries used to have a separate minister for War and one for Navy, for example

something has to give...  indeed, a trip to an old steel plant brings that point home hard.   though you gotta admit that it won't happen without some good ol' fashioned kicking & screaming.

that is, unless a war comes along and devastates everything, which as i'm sure you realize much more than most of us brethren on the other side of the Pond, is not the preferred option by any stretch of the imagination.

The DEA will be reframed primarily as an anti-terrorist organ just like the FBI is being reframed as an organ of national security.

Meanwhile, whatever local economic activity can be spurred by recreational drug use will be sorely welcome.

Vermont and new Hempshire will have to look at matching Colorado now, since there are few simple enjoyments like blowing a joint in a hot tub apres ski...And if the conditions on the piste suck, well.........

You can tell I am looking forward to this latter aspect.

It just costs too much to build the FEMA Camps. Where are they going to house all of us Domestic Terrorists..er...Constitutionalists?

Many of us do not use Drugs to pacify ourselves and we will not conform.

So the DEA turns into the Nazi SS and we will populate the vacant beds. There are about 2,000,000 of us in the Liberty Movement and about 2,000,000 Beds to fill once the Minor Drug Offenders are released.

The War on Drugs has just been used to see how much abuse of Civil Liberties that they could get away with. The Constitutionalists will become the new villians.

Three Squares and a cot behind Cinder Block and Bars. And they can turn them into Showers and Ovens and no Obamabots will give a damn as our corpses go up in smoke. Don't worry. Our burned bodies will be used as fuel to run Power Plants and the EPA will grant a waiver on the Emissions.

So what do you want to do about it?

Smells like a fat pot tax and a sellout to Crony-Corp Marihuana....all the "heads"  that have been begging the government to "tax my marihuana, please" will rue the day when they find out all the "legal" pot will be GMO Corporate-grade, FDA-regulated, IRS-taxed, DEA-enforced.

"What, officer?  Yes, this is my marihuana.  What tax stamp?  No, it's organic, I bought it from a friend."

"Up against the wall mother-fucker.  That's an illegal substance!"

Christie and NJ Democrats are running together a Monty hustle. Each gets to appeal to its base and fool other suckas. Christie sounds tough about spending and Democrats claim they have to compromise with Christie, while they both screw the unions and the voters. Christie and the Democrats aren't funding adequately their public pension plans and this allowing them to spend even more recklessly. Christie demagogues his tough stand on unions and the Democrats demagogue their compromise forced on them by Christie. Even if ZIRP continues and the market doesn't crash, NJ Pension plans will go bust and the residents will be stuck dead broke from the Christie/Democrat Monty hustle. The Christie swine hopes to escape before it happens to the WH.

I remember when he was doing the whole schtick a few years ago. he was sort of dancing around the fact that school unions had overstepped their bounds. He never quite said it, just danced around it all the time. this was seen as galvanizing. What a shit-crock, just another angle.

Thanks for "ass-crank"!  That's a keeper.

What Christie wanted to convince the people of NJ of is that the school unions aren't supporting a huge swath of NJ's economy.  IN reality there are two reasons people move to NJ, 1) proximity to NYC thus access to salary opportunities and 2) a reputation for excellent schools especially in those areas that balance number 1) with woodsy suburban lifestyle.  These reasons are complimentary to each other while influencing the price of housing and, oh yeah, tax rates.
