We have all heard what might be termed baloney, codswallop, tripe, bull. Call it what you will, it all boils down to the same old thing, especially when its intention is to deceive the public. Thomas Perkins is the latest perpetrator, when he writes in an open letter to the Wall Street Journal (oh! How they must have rubbed their hands together with glee when then they received that letter on the editorial board) that the second Kristallnacht is just around the corner. Fear not, Thomas Perkins, your windows are too heavily guarded for them to be broken by anyone.
The letter reads as follows:
“Regarding your editorial "Censors on Campus" (Jan. 18): Writing from the epicenter of progressive thought, San Francisco, I would call attention to the parallels of fascist Nazi Germany to its war on its "one percent," namely its Jews, to the progressive war on the American one percent, namely the "rich."
From the Occupy movement to the demonization of the rich embedded in virtually every word of our local newspaper, the San Francisco Chronicle, I perceive a rising tide of hatred of the successful one percent. There is outraged public reaction to the Google buses carrying technology workers from the city to the peninsula high-tech companies which employ them. We have outrage over the rising real-estate prices which these "techno geeks" can pay. We have, for example, libelous and cruel attacks in the Chronicle on our number-one celebrity, the author Danielle Steel, alleging that she is a "snob" despite the millions she has spent on our city's homeless and mentally ill over the past decades.
This is a very dangerous drift in our American thinking. Kristallnacht was unthinkable in 1930; is its descendent "progressive" radicalism unthinkable now?

Firstly, I am not certain that San Francisco can be classed as the very epicenter of progressive thought and just because Mr. Perkins is writing from there doesn’t mean that every Tom, Dick or Harry that churns something out gets to stick the label on his lapel. Secondly, the ‘rich’ are not a group of people that are a culture, a cultural group that can be classified anthropologically and certainly not the 1%.
The founder of Kleiner Perkins Caulfield and Byers should re-read his history books. Being part of the 1% isn’t a religion and isn’t a belief. It isn’t anything to do with credence or anything of that nature. It has everything to do with culture what the 1%-ers are and what they stand for in a society that has effectively had enough of the masses slaving away while the few get the benefits. Comparing the 1%-ers to the Final Solution and Kristallnacht has nothing in common except the fact that the author has probably fallen on his head. The parallels are nothing more than a litany of historical ineptitude that smacks of marketing-media spin doctoring at its worst.
The ‘rising high tide of hatred’ of which you speak Mr. Perkins should be understood in another way. It’s nothing to do with hatred. It’s everything to do with the belief that working for your entire life deserves more than just having your house repossessed and losing your job in an economy that has gone AWOL on itself. Working for your entire life merits a great deal more than the Federal Reserve pumping $85 billion a month into the banking system and seeing nothing come your way. It has nothing to do with ‘hatred’; perhaps Mr. Perkins is guilty of anthropophobia. Hell is not the other people!
Thomas Perkins may be a venture capitalist, but he certainly needs to revise his classics. Start calling the state a fascist and your whole argument that Barack Obama is a loonie-tune comedian with a tinge of Communism sprouting from under his arms just falls to pieces. It’s not possible to have it both ways, is it?
When will people start realizing that it’s okay to be rich, that we have nothing against making money and showing that the American Dream didn’t die as soon as you turned the last page of the Norman Mailer novel (it was only ever on paper for most Americans, even though it was sold lock, stock and barrel to the rest of the world)? Meritocracy is great. But, what people are against these days is the corruption, the state that takes everything through taxation and the masses working for the few and getting none of the benefits.

Pivotfarm doth protest too much! Thomas Perkins is spot on...
Jews where the 1% in Germany that happened to be highly involved in banking and finance, especially before, during and after WWI, that's until Hitler and his socialist utopian state took full control of the gov't by 1934. Germans pinned the loss of WWI and the economic suffering that took place afterward on "Jewish Bankers" and the Jewish German population in general, even accusing German Jews who had served bravely in WWI as traitors and accuse them of siding with the enemy. This same scapegoating phenomenon is going on right now here in the US thus Perkins draws a valid anology.
However this time it is anyone who is rich not just Jews. BTW, If I lose my house because I can't afford it, it's not the 1%, my bank, my loan officer or anyone's fault it's just life, that's why you save and buy insurance and try to hedge the pitfalls of life. It is not Government's role, especially the Federal Gov't to bail out anyone, person or corp. If individual states want to pick winners and losers or ensure equal outcomes for all then so be it, but Consitutionally our Federal Gov't has no business in such matters.
Oh one last thing, life isn't fair. There will always be someone better looking than you, smarter than you, healthier than you, luckier than you, cooler than you and yes richer than you.

That's a pretty good call; it almost makes the connection that needs to be made.
Polarization of our society is taking place because one faction says, "it is all that taxation and government, we need more for the few." The other faction sees the obverse, and claims, "it is all the few, and we need more taxation." We, the people, are played by both the government and the few for the purpose of maintaining status quo, which is the few support the government by campaign contributions (bribes!!), and the government serves the few by enacting loopholes to tax laws, and diluting whatever supposed progressive acts might get past committee.
This cannot end well...

So you are siding with the idle against the productive. Your definition of cool seems seems to depend on how long somone can stay stoned at any given time. For the 1% it's not primarily about what money can buy in terms of stocks, bonds, real estate and gold. They satisfied their appetite for those things some billions ago.
No, what the money is about is how it can secure congressmen, the judiciary, law enforcement and the other major institutions.
This was the fatal mistake of the Jewish people in Germany. They may have had money but they didn't own the whole political/judicial and law enforcement infrastructure. In the end their money could not save them.
The extra cash the 1% make is used either to buy the infrastructure of society or to buy promising plebs to keep them under control. That is why they provide scholarships, and professorships etc. That is why generals and other government retirees take up positions on boards. That is why senators take up positions with pharmaceutical comapnies etc. That is why the syllabuses of schools are getting so corrupted.
This is all a great pity because their vast resources of money gave them a distinct advantage to harness people and resources for the greater good but instead of benevolent they became malevolent. Their castles become larger, their moats deeper and their escape tunnels more winding than ever.
If North Korea is taken as an example and if the tentacles of the NSA are as long as Snowden says, then humanity is headed for a very dark and wicked period. The truth is you need a whole string of Snowdens to blow the cover of the malevolent wherever they are, in the hope that an element of benevolence and vision is embraced by those of means.
If there are no more Snowdens then I am afraid that our children's children will be born into a world where North Korea is seen as a model of stability.
Heaven help us if death is the only escape from this madness.

That the rich are not an ethnic group or a religious group or "a belief" is all irrelevant. They are a group, and they are hated by some people. Some people are susceptible to the constant awareness of their standing relative to others on some dimension, like money, constantly comparing, constantly seething -- and some people don't live that way at all.

As to the history of the Rentenmark and and the Reichsmark, if you don't think were backed debt based currencies perhaps you should go back and figure out why they actually succeeded in ending the Wiemar hyperinflation in the first place (precisely because they were backed debt - Rentenbank debt). In America and much of the world the

is often viewed by that 1 percent as having to pay taxes. Taxation is so unfair. That money is all mine. What, you want to take some of my money and use it to give comfort and moral support to those less rich than us? Not if my powerful lawyer and political friends can stop it. When the problem is taxation, more taxation is not the solution. Taxation is theft, and should be eliminated entirely - it is completely uneccessary - even if you want to live in some collectivist socialism. The alternatives are many, but worthy ideas are state owned banks and insurance - but far better is the collection of all rents, and all premiums due to monopolies.
You seem to have fallen into the ditch of delusion - it is not the wealthy that are a problem, it is those who weild the power of the state to attain, expand and maintain their wealth.
It is the monopolies of law, media, financial and political power that is the problem - it is facism - and no amount of taxation will cure it. Well, not exactly. If there are ANY government employees, and they are paid, you must either use tax or create the money to pay them.
If you are looking back, longingly, at the day when the US had no income tax, I would point out that most of our earlier expenditures were financed by selling public land. Since we have little left to sell, and seem to prefer holding what we do have as a trust to prevent total deforestation and ruination of any remaining parks and forests, we are left with only those two means. I hear both criticized roundly in ZH and other blogs, but no one suggests any alternative.
"No government", or anarchy, is NOT the answer, as most realize once they hit about 20 or 21 years of age. And, big government seems to fail egregiously whenever it happens. So, we are left with a conundrum... how do we limit the size of government and still regulate the greed of the 1%? (using 1% as a non-limiting approximation for the 'very rich.')
Some problems seem to work themselves out - at least so far. In particular the Luddite fear of technology. Whether that will continue to be the case remains to be seen, as numbers of inhabitants of our planet increase and productivity grows even faster, the number of unemployed appears to be growing exponentially. Unrest amongst those unemployed masses would seem impossible to avoid - witness the "Arab Spring." The real question, in my mind, is whether and when that unrest reaches our shores. What will be the 'official' reaction; the ultimate consequence?

Maybe you should look up the number from other sources. The number surprised me and that is why I remember it. The episode was the WW II series where they interviewed Germans who lived through the period.
IIRC Hitler took power the end of January 1933 and he started spending immediately...this went on into 1945...12 years...don't forget Germany economically raped every country they occupied....30% of the total German cost of WWII is a big number....I don't think it's correct...

I have read a considerable amount of history of Europe as well as the economics of Germany and to me this number is nonsense...as far as proving that to you...I could care...I won't do the work for you. The hint is 30% is huge from roughly 1933-1945.

He went after the Jews largely because of their support of, and prominence in the communist movements throughout Europe, because they were a convenient scapegoat precisely because they were disproportionately wealthy and had disproportionate power in banking, media, and politics (as has been repeated in the US, UK, France, and elsewhere - including Russia, and perhaps most of all, not that I expect any articles on this, in Ukraine, where they are only 0.07% of the population, but own/control a lot of the banks, newspapers, tv stations, etc. - but it's "hate" to discuss such disproportionate power, so I won't).
It's also the case that some of the smears and allegations against the Jews as a group were true. The notion that blaming Jews within nations qua group for some of the backlash they've faced over and over is like "blaming the {rape} victim" is understandable from a political and perhaps pragmatic point of view - but that doesn't mean it's accurate.
Everyone knows the notion that "history is written by the victors" which is true, but the truth is murdered a second time when historians are pressured to cast aside all nuance and present simplistic tales of good versus evil. While the Americans were certainly less evil than the Nazi state, I'm not quite so sure that the British or Soviets could seriously be viewed as less evil. The game changer is the Holocaust, a flame of suffering that is useful to dim the radiance of all others. How many innocent people were starved or shot to death by the Soviets? How many natives the world over were slaughtered by the British for greed?

During a long period of recent history, Jews were forbidden to engage in most forms of commerce in many areas of Europe. One occupation that was not forbidden was what we would today call finance. It is an accident of history that this turned out to be very lucrative, as it is today. Some very small number of Jews managed to turn these lemons into lemonade -- they became wealthy. This success, has resulted in envy which has caused ignorant bigots to demonize them, and to justify their mistreatment, as you have just done.
Shakespeare's play, The Merchant of Venice, recounts just exactly this situation that I refer to. Written ca. 1600, it is the story of Shylock, a Jewish money lender in Venice, who is spat upon and vilified by the merchant of the title, Antonio. Today, this prejudice and outright mistreatment is disgusting, but, in Shakespeare's day, and for hundreds of years before and since, it was the norm. In spite of this, Shylock has prospered, although he is embittered. He gives one of the most powerful speeches in all of Shakespeare's works:

Ancaeus, Johnny did not demonize or justify the Jews mistreatment, at least I could not see it. He only lamented their dis-proportionate power due to their dominance in financing. I think that any group that dominates finance would eventually be demonized because of the power it wields. The true solution is money in the form of species only and no fractional reserve banking. This wont happen in my lifetime.
Everytime I hear about Jews being forced into usury by denying them laborious occupations, it pisses me off. It's NOT true. Nobody forced them into ghettos either. They chose not to live among Gentiles as a way to preserve their ethnicity. The Jews refused labor, deeming it not worthy of them. Some of the Russian Tsars forced them outside The Pale of Settlement, granted them farming land and even had the Army build them houses. Their livestock was unattended and died, the land not tiled and the houses became ruins shortly. They usually fled the farms reverting to selling alcohol, usury, swindling. Please read Soljenitsin's book "Two centuries together". I hope there is an English translation of this magnificent book.

That's where they settled after leaving Germany, in the Pale of Settlement. At first , they were not confined to that area.
