The Powers-That-Be Are Secretly Terrified of the People’s Power … And Only PRETEND They’re Firmly In Control

George Washington's picture

Our Actions Are More Powerful Than We Realize

David Swanson writes:

Almost every [history of past activism] includes belated discoveries of the extent to which government officials were influenced by activist groups even while pretending to ignore popular pressure.

These revelations can be found in the memoirs of the government officials as well, such as in George W. Bush's recollection of how seriously the Republican Senate Majority Leader was taking public pressure against the war on Iraq in 2006.

Of course, activism that appears ineffectual at the time can succeed in a great many ways, including by influencing others, even young children, who go on to become effective activists -- or by influencing firm opponents who begin to change their minds and eventually switch sides.

The beautiful thing about nonviolent activism is that, while risking no harm, it has the potential to do good in ways small and large that ripple out from it in directions we cannot track or measure.

Wittner participated in his first political demonstration in 1961. The USSR was withdrawing from a moratorium on nuclear testing. A protest at the White House urged President Kennedy not to follow suit:

"Picking up what I considered a very clever sign ('Kennedy, Don't Mimic the Russians!'), I joined the others (supplemented by a second busload of students from a Quaker college in the Midwest) circling around a couple of trees outside the White House. Mike and I -- as new and zealous recruits -- circled all day without taking a lunch or a dinner break.

"For decades I looked back on this venture as a trifle ridiculous. After all, we and other small bands of protesters couldn't have had any impact on U.S. policy, could we? Then in the mid-1990s, while doing research at the Kennedy Library on the history of the world nuclear disarmament movement, I stumbled onto an oral history interview with Adrian Fisher, deputy director of the U.S. Arms Control and Disarmament Agency. He was explaining why Kennedy delayed resuming atmospheric nuclear tests until April 1962. Kennedy personally wanted to resume such tests, Fisher recalled, 'but he also recognized that there were a lot of people that were going to be deeply offended by the United States resuming atmospheric testing. We had people picketing the White House, and there was a lot of excitement about it -- just because the Russians do it, why do we have to do it?'"

Yes, Kennedy delayed a horrible action. He didn't, at that time, block it permanently. But if the picketers in 1961 had had the slightest notion that Kennedy was being influenced by them, their numbers would have multiplied 10-fold, as would the delay have correspondingly lengthened.

Yes, our government was more responsive to public opinion in the 1960s than now, but part of the reason is that more people were active then. And another reason is that government officials are doing a better job now of hiding any responsiveness to public sentiment, which helps convince the public it has no impact, which reduces activism further. We also focus far too much on the most difficult individuals to move, such as presidents.

In 1973-1974, Wittner visited GI coffee houses in Japan including in Yokusaka, where the Midway aircraft carrier was in port. The Japanese were protesting the ship's carrying of nuclear weapons, which was illegal in Japan, and which the U.S. military, of course, lied about. But U.S. soldiers with whom Wittner and other activists had talked, brought them onto the ship and showed them the nukes. The following summer, when Wittner read in a newspaper that,

"a substantial number of American GIs had refused to board the Midway for a mission to South Korea, then swept by popular protest against the U.S.-backed dictatorship, it occurred to me that I might have played some small role in inspiring their mutiny."

Soldiers can still be reached much more easily than presidents, more easily in many cases in fact than the average citizen. War lies are harder to sell to the people who have been fighting the wars.

In the late 1990s, Wittner was researching the anti-nuclear movement of decades past. He interviewed Robert "Bud" McFarlane, President Ronald Reagan's former national security advisor:

"Other administration officials had claimed that they had barely noticed the nuclear freeze movement. But when I asked McFarlane about it, he lit up and began outlining a massive administration campaign to counter and discredit the freeze -- one that he had directed. . . . A month later, I interviewed Edwin Meese, a top White House staffer and U.S. attorney general during the Reagan administration. When I asked him about the administration's response to the freeze campaign, he followed the usual line by saying that there was little official notice taken of it. In response, I recounted what McFarlane had revealed. A sheepish grin now spread across this former government official's face, and I knew that I had caught him. 'If Bud says that,' he remarked tactfully, 'it must be true.'"

When someone tells you to stop imagining that you're having an impact, ask them to please redirect their energy into getting 10 friends to join you in doing what needs to be done. If it has no impact, you'll have gone down trying. If it has an impact, nobody will tell you for many years.

Mr. Swanson is right. I noted in 2009:

As MSNBC news correspondent Jonathan Capehart tells Dylan Ratigan, the main problem is that people aren’t making enough noise. Capehart says that the people not only have to “burn up the phone lines to Congress”, but also to hit the streets and protest in D.C.

Even though most politicians are totally corrupt, if many millions of Americans poured into the streets of D.C., a critical mass would be reached, and the politicians would start changing things in a hurry.

As [liberal] PhD economist Dean Baker points out:

The elites hate to acknowledge it, but when large numbers of ordinary people are moved to action, it changes the narrow political world where the elites call the shots. Inside accounts reveal the extent to which Johnson and Nixon’s conduct of the Vietnam War was constrained by the huge anti-war movement. It was the civil rights movement, not compelling arguments, that convinced members of Congress to end legal racial discrimination. More recently, the townhall meetings, dominated by people opposed to health care reform, have been a serious roadblock for those pushing reform….

A big turnout … can make a real difference.

Baker is right about Vietnam.

Specifically – according to Daniel Ellsberg and many others – Richard Nixon actually planned on dropping a nuclear bomb on Vietnam. Nixon also said he didn’t care what the American people thought. He said that — no matter what the public did or said — he was going to escalate the war in Vietnam.

However, a well-known biographer says that Nixon backed off when hundreds of thousands of people turned out in Washington, D.C. to protest an escalation of the war.

And Pulitzer prize winning reporter Chris Hedges pointed out recently:

I was in Leipzig on November 9, 1989 with leaders of East German opposition and they told me that - perhaps within a year – there would be free passes back and forth across the Berlin wall.

Within a few hours, the Berlin Wall, at least as far as an impediment to human traffic, did not exist.

Week after week, month after month, these clergy in Leipzig held these candlelit vigils. And it was slow at first … people forget. Just like the Egyptian revolution has been percolating for many many months, and even years.

And suddenly, it began to grow.

And Honecker – who had been in ruling East Germany since the time of the dinosaurs – sent down a paratroop division to Leipzig .. . and they won’t attack the demonstrators.

Part of the reason that our actions are more powerful than we think is that courage is contagious. So is the ability to think.

As we've previously noted:

[Studies show ] that even one dissenting voice can give people permission to think for themselves. Specifically:

Solomon Asch, with experiments originally carried out in the 1950s and well-replicated since, highlighted a phenomenon now known as “conformity”. In the classic experiment, a subject sees a puzzle like the one in the nearby diagram: Which of the lines A, B, and C is the same size as the line X? Take a moment to determine your own answer…The gotcha is that the subject is seated alongside a number of other people looking at the diagram – seemingly other subjects, actually confederates of the experimenter. The other “subjects” in the experiment, one after the other, say that line C seems to be the same size as X. The real subject is seated next-to-last. How many people, placed in this situation, would say “C” – giving an obviously incorrect answer that agrees with the unanimous answer of the other subjects? What do you think the percentage would be?

Three-quarters of the subjects in Asch’s experiment gave a “conforming” answer at least once. A third of the subjects conformed more than half the time.

Get it so far? People tend to defer to what the herd thinks.

But here’s the good news:

Adding a single dissenter – just one other person who gives the correct answer, or even an incorrect answer that’s different from the group’s incorrect answer – reduces conformity very sharply, down to 5-10%.

Why is this important? Well, it means that one person who publicly speaks the truth can sway a group of people away from group-think.

If a group of people is leaning towards believing the government’s version of events, a single person who speaks the truth can help snap the group out of its trance.

There is an important point here regarding the web, as well. The above-cited article states that:

When subjects can respond in a way that will not be seen by the group, conformity also drops. What does that mean? Well, on the web, many people post anonymously. The anonymity gives people permission to “respond in a way that will not be seen by the group”. But most Americans still don’t get their news from the web, or only go to mainstream corporate news sites.

Away from the keyboard, we are not very anonymous. So that is where the conformity dynamic — and the need for courageous dissent — is vital. It is doubly important that we apply the same hard-hitting truthtelling we do on the Internet in our face-to-face interactions; because it is there that dissent is urgently needed.

Bottom line: Each person‘s voice has the power to snap entire groups out of their coma of irrational group-think. So go forth and be a light of rationality and truth among the sleeping masses.

And a recent study shows that when only 10% of a population have strongly-held beliefs, their belief will often be adopted by the majority of the society.

True, governments worldwide are cracking down on liberty with the iron fist of repression.

But some argue that this is actually a sign that we are winning.

As Truthout’s Matt Renner writes:

Recently I sat down with two of the young adults who organized and led the Egyptian resistance movement that overthrew Hosni Mubarak. The media narrative said it took 18 days, when in fact, they had been organizing for over five years.

According to these young men, the moment they knew they had won was the day Mubarak’s government shut off the Internet and blocked cellphone communications. When people could no longer get updates about what was happening in Tahrir Square, they had to come out of their homes and see for themselves, tripling the size of the protests in one fell swoop.

The global plutocracy is terrified of dissent. In some places, the war on dissent is being fought with bullets. In others, the war on dissent targets social media and mobile communications, while repressing and deceiving communities of struggle. It’s already happening.

Indeed, the use of heavy-handed tactics – taking the velvet glove off of the iron fist – could backfire, as it will show the “emperor’s ruthlessness” for all to see.

The powers-that-be are terrified of political awakening and dissent. For example, Zbigniew Brzezinski – National Security Adviser to President Carter, creator of America’s strategy to lure Russia into Afghanistan, creator of America’s plans for Eurasia in general, and Obama’s former foreign affairs adviser - said:

For the first time in human history almost all of humanity is politically activated, politically conscious and politically interactive. There are only a few pockets of humanity left in the remotest corners of the world that are not politically alert and engaged with the political turmoil and stirrings that are so widespread today around the world.

***

America needs to face squarely a centrally important new global reality: that the world’s population is experiencing a political awakening unprecedented in scope and intensity, with the result that the politics of populism are transforming the politics of power.

***

[T]he central challenge of our time is posed not by global terrorism, but rather by the intensifying turbulence caused by the phenomenon of global political awakening. That awakening is socially massive and politically radicalizing.

It is no overstatement to assert that now in the 21st century the population of much of the developing world is politically stirring and in many places seething with unrest. It is a population acutely conscious of social injustice to an unprecedented degree, and often resentful of its perceived lack of political dignity.

***

These energies transcend sovereign borders and pose a challenge both to existing states as well as to the existing global hierarchy, on top of which America still perches.

***

The misdiagnosis [of foreign policy] pertains to a relatively vague, excessively abstract, highly emotional, semi-theological definition of the chief menace that we face today in the world, and the consequent slighting of what I view as the unprecedented global challenge arising out of the unique phenomenon of a truly massive global political awakening of mankind. We live in an age in which mankind writ large is becoming politically conscious and politically activated to an unprecedented degree, and it is this condition which is producing a great deal of international turmoil.

That turmoil is the product of the political awakening, the fact that today vast masses of the world are not politically neutered, as they have been throughout history. They have political consciousness.

***

The other major change in international affairs is that for the first time, in all of human history, mankind has been politically awakened. That is a total new reality – total new reality. It has not been so for most of human history until the last one hundred years. And in the course of the last one hundred years, the whole world has become politically awakened. And no matter where you go, politics is a matter of social engagement, and most people know what is generally going on –generally going on – in the world, and are consciously aware of global inequities, inequalities, lack of respect, exploitation. Mankind is now politically awakened and stirring.

And a reader notes:

We do not understand our own power. Look around you. Almost everything you see was not only made, but created by people like yourselves. Most of the horrors existing on earth were engendered by the elites, WITH OUR CO-OPERATION. Without our consent, most of the terrifying situations existing in our world will cease to exist. Resist. It certainly may be difficult initially, but it grows easier moment by moment.

Some historical quotes may be helpful in illustrating the importance of struggling to make things better ...

It is from numberless diverse acts of courage and belief that human history is shaped. Each time a man stands up for an ideal, or acts to improve the lot of others, or strikes out against injustice, he sends forth a tiny ripple of hope, and crossing each other from a million different centers of energy and daring, those ripples build a current that can sweep down the mightiest walls of oppression and resistance.
- Robert F . Kennedy

We must never despair; our situation has been compromising before; and it changed for the better; so I trust it will again. If difficulties arise; we must put forth new exertion and proportion our efforts to the exigencies of the times.
- George Washington

We must remember that one determined person can make a significant difference, and that a small group of determined people can change the course of history.
-Sonia Johnson

Never doubt that a small, group of thoughtful, committed citizens can change the world. Indeed, it is the only thing that ever has.
- Margaret Mead

Hope has never trickled down. It has always sprung up.
- Studs Terkel

At certain points in history, the energy level of people, the indignation level of people rises. And at that point it becomes possible for people to organize and to agitate and to educate one another, and to create an atmosphere in which the government must do something.
- Howard Zinn, historian

There is no act too small, no act too bold. The history of social change is the history of millions of actions, small and large, coming together at points in history and creating a power that governments cannot suppress.
- Howard Zinn

Cynicism Is Not Realistic

Millions of Americans think that hope is for the foolish, and that the smart people are cynics.

But if all of the people who think of themselves as cynics or skeptics made noise, things would instantly change for the better. In other words, the millions of cynics/skeptics/self-described “realists” aren’t raising a ruckus against the fraud being committed by the giant banks, the corruption of our political system, or the lawlessness and imperial arrogance of our intelligence-military-industrial complex because they think things can’t change.

But by staying silent, they are actually creating the conditions in which nothing can change. As Edmund Burke points out:

All tyranny needs to gain a foothold is for people of good conscience to remain silent.

If the millions of cynics woke up to the fact that they are a huge group – especially when combined with the people who are already actively working for the restoration of a liberty, justice and the rule of law – they would suddenly realize that collectively we can change things in a heart beat.

Don't Want to Go First?

Most people don't want to go first ...

Most people want to see others succeeding before they give it a shot.

But the truth - as pointed out by Zbigniew Brzezinski above - is that people are waking up worldwide ... and things are changing quickly.

A few short years ago, Americans wouldn't have believed that the White House would lie us into a major war, that our government would choose Wall Street over the little guy, or that the NSA spied on every American citizen.  Now, this is all common knowledge.

A few years ago, most Americans trusted government and corporate leaders.  Now, polls show that trust has collapsed, as people realize that our core institutions are rotten with corruption.

You will not be taking the first step.  More people than you realize are already working to challenge the corrupt people in positions of power.

When you act to make things better, you're actually joining a large group of people doing the same thing.

And as Hellen Keller pointed out:

Avoiding danger is no safer in the long run than outright exposure. Life is either a daring adventure, or nothing.

Postscript: In any event, hiding our head in the sand doesn't work.

I once said to a man who complained about the "women" he got engaged to not going forward to marriage...

"You're shopping the girls' department.  Start shopping in the women's department."

Older is more appreciative.

There is no shortage of people who would stand and fight an oppressive government.

Me, by myself, would defend my property, but by myself I am powerless against a SWAT team.  Just as most of you would be also.

True Americans far out number the oppressors, but without organization we are individual sitting ducks protecting our own little spaces we call home.

Stockpiling food and ammo, as some do.  Is only surviving.

To return our country to the home of the free will take organization.

Lots of people bitch and complain about governments  controls.

Action is needed, and organization.

The first step is to get out and vote out every current office holder.

There will be some of TPTB coming here urging ZH to cross the line and thus provide reason to be shut down or individuals 'investigated'.

I don't see ZH has a function to agitate anything, only to inform.

And if there is one thing TPTB really fucking would hate is an informed public.

When it comes to the choice of protecting their own or their master's arses the politician will sell them down the drain everytime.

The 1% elite still need to realise that even though they own the politician the power is always the politicians when the shit hits the fan and a decision on who dies is to be made.

The 1% are scared because they think the money they spent owning polticians and regulators wont buy them off against the fear of growing public discontent. The 1% are protected and mostly anonymous, the politican not so, are suceptible to heavy growing public pressures. And when blood is demanded and required, it wont be their own.

The ELITE are shit scared the public will wake up and take control of their politicians.

Lots of truth in the article and the comments but all the talk of revolution is counter productive. Americans won their war for independence. Unfortunatly, we have been misinformed over the years and do not understand how the government is constructed or how it works.

You can't operate or control something you do not understand.

Go here:

http://uscode.house.gov/browse/frontmatter/organiclaws&edition=prelim

Read the 4 Organic Laws carefully and in order and ask yourself, why is the Northwest Ordinance of 1787 in the law book and considered fundamental to the American System of government? Why are there 4 Organic Laws? What is the difference between the United States of American of the Articles of Confederation and the United States of the Constitution of September, 1787? Lots of other questions should come to mind if you read critically and THINK.

Irritated is a better word than Terrified.

Me thinks that George Washington is the 'title' writer for all ZH posts as they're always spectacular.

The PTB is irritated by protests, much as  a dog is bothered by fleas,

Or shit is bothered by fly's, but to suggest that a parasite is feared by the host is non-sense.

All parasites can be controlled with a good pesticide.

*

In general there are 2 kinds of men of power those in the dark, and those in the light.

The political power in the light wants to be LOVED and yes they fear not being loved.

Those with the real POWER, who stay in the dark, neither fear or desire love. They do as they wish,

Washington should change this title to "Fleas create conspiracy theory that Dog's are terrified of Fleas", ... a good scratch, or a swim, and its never been a problem for long.

You said:

"All parasites can be controlled with a good pesticide."

That is not an entirely accurate statement. A parasite can be controlled until it can't be controlled and the parasite kills its host. It happens all the time.

You mentioned fleas. Although Advantage and Frontline have been on the market for a relatively short time in the scheme of things, fleas have already developed a resistence. Imagine that.

The same could be said of a virus. A dose of good antibiotics might contain it initially, but with its very survival at stake, the virus mutates...evolves...becomes something different and often stronger.

Never underestimate a perceived "parasite" or "virus." When they take control, more often than not, the host never saw it coming. ;)

I agreed with most of what George Washington has written, except for the degree to which it understates, or does not state, how bad things actually are, and how fast they are getting worse.

Previous comments on this article discussed whether or not more 9/11 Truth should enter into the bigger picture. I agree that, obviously, the events on 9/11/2001 were the most spectacular symbols of the social situation, regarding the degree to which the ruling classes are able to dominate and control civilization through lies, backed by violence. However, the political problems that follow from recognizing that there is no reasonable doubt that 9/11 was a successful inside job, false flag attack, is that more 9/11 Truth does practically nothing to change the runaway established systems of legalized lies, backed by legalized violence.

I tend to believe that the ruling classes are losing control, and that they are afraid of enough people "waking up" to the degree to which there are fundamentally fraudulent financial systems destroying their future, and the future of their children even more. However, I regard that as being more of symptom of human beings collectively losing control over their future. In that context, I find most public protesting to mostly be contributions towards collapsing the established systems into chaos, rather than building anything new, that could be better. I see almost nothing whatsoever in the protests that goes beyond superficial identifications of the problems, without the slightest traces of the synthesis of genuine better resolutions of chronic political problems.

THE BIG PICTURE is the runaway triumph of progress in science and technology, being channeled through social pyramid systems based upon small groups using dishonesty and coercion to control large groups by keeping them ignorant and afraid. On the one hand, pumping up that social pyramid system with powers and capabilities that are trillions of times greater is necessarily going to eventually blow that system away. However, on the other hand, I do not observe anything more than the slightest, insignificant traces of enough people going through the kinds of intellectual scientific revolutions which would be necessary to change politics enough to cope with that exponentially emerging scientific technology. That is especially true because, more than anything else, there would have to be radically different ways to think about and operate the death controls, in order for there to be any possible genuinely better solutions to our real problems.

The ruling classes are based upon the historically selected and developed psychological, social and political habits that they have, in order to operate according to the principles and methods of organized crime, in order that their small group could control much larger groups. Of course, that social polarization is automatically getting worse every day! However, at the same time, the accumulating effects upon the natural world, and especially the destruction of natural capital, is getting worse every day. Therefore, our deeper problems with respect to social polarizations, and the destruction and degradation of the natural world, are RUNAWAYS ... which are being DRIVEN by the ruling classes, through more spectacular used of lies, backed by violence, such as orchestrating the events on 9/11/2001. However, I have never read any presentation of more 9/11 Truth that goes beyond superficially blaming particular members of the ruling classes.

I recently expressed my overview of the problem in a comment under this:

http://www.zerohedge.com/news/2014-01-31/how-rothschild-sees-future

More radical 9/11 Truth, as well as more Radical Truth generally about the ruling classes' social pyramid systems, SHOULD lead to better overviews of the entirety of the human ecology and industrial ecology problems, which are able to be reconciled within the natural ecology.

I have no doubt that the ruling classes are losing control, because human beings overall have lost control, paradoxically by them becoming so powerful that their effects have become some overwhelming that they have exceeded and blown apart the systems that they used to be able to operate within, while merely taking those for granted. Furthermore, IF civilization survives, then there is no doubt that the technologies which are already now trillions of times more powerful will become quadrillions of times more powerful.

The industrial revolution has seen animal energy become exceeded by understanding and harnessing previously inanimate energies that quite quickly went through exponential progress, with steam engines, and their corresponding social debt engines, becoming 10 times, then 100 times, then 10,000 times greater than human and other animal energies were before. That did not stop! Instead, it made a series of quantum leaps, where the mathematical physics paradigm shifts enabled jumping form chemical energy to atomic energy, as well as other similar series of quantum leaps in power and capacities, driven, appropriately enough, by quantum mechanics, etc.. Hence, animal energy was then surpassed by powers that became billions, then trillions of times greater, while they are apparently on the way to become quadrillions of times greater.

Meanwhile, all of that is still being channeled through social pyramid systems which depend upon the ruling classes being able to maintain legalized lies, backed by legalized violence, to keep those they rule over ignorant and afraid. Clearly the contradiction in the Internet revolutions are an expression of one of the dimensions of the nature of that problem! Therefore, I REPEAT, the ruling classes are losing control, but, as far as I am able to observe, the vast majority of protestors are only marginally contributing to the collapse into chaos, because they, by and large, have NOT gone through enough intellectual scientific revolution to be able to think of any better political revolution ideas.

The ruling classes are faced with the paradoxes of final failure from too much success at operating pyramid systems of debt slavery, which have driven their numbers to become debt insanities, which have no mathematically possible solutions within those established and entrenched systems. While more and more people are "waking up" to the ways that they are surrounded and controlled by a fundamentally fraudulent financial accounting system, whereby the banksters have cooked the bookkeeping for their own fantastic benefits, there is almost nobody "waking up" about how to have any less fraudulent bookkeeping, since that would require a series of intellectual scientific revolutions, to understand human civilizations as general energy systems, which would include more self-reflexive understanding of the ways that the biggest bullies' bullshit world views not only dominated the financial system, but also the philosophy of science itself!

People are quite right to protest against the criminal insanities of the ruling classes. However, IF protests ever became sufficiently successful, then they would have to start building new systems, rather than merely resisting the old systems. Building new systems is going to be trillions of times more difficult than anything previous in human history, and, IF civilization survives, then that is going to become quadrillions of times more difficult!

Ideally, we SHOULD have monetary systems which can be reconciled with general energy systems. However, the way that we understand entropy today is backwards, due to the degree to which the biggest bullies have constructed a Bizarro Mirror World in which almost everything is being seen backwards and distorted. The deeper problems are due to the success of the human experiment, which was building brains, that could build models of the world, with models of themselves within their models of the world, while the ruling classes wage a war against consciousness, to try to prevent people from understanding the elementary principles of philosophy and spirituality, by substituting backward fakes for everything, such having a backward fake "democracy," in which real system almost 99% of the powers of governments have been effectively privatized, although the use of those powers is still publicly enforced.

Not only is that now driving human paradoxes into hyper-drive, but also, we are rapidly approaching future singularity points where the technologies that we created, such as computers, are potentially going to develop their abilities to model their world, including models of themselves within their models of their world, which are going to equal, and then supersede the abilities of individual human beings, and then all human beings combined. In that awesome context, while I believe that the human ruling classes have already lost control over those developments, I do not see any significant public protests which address or comprehend the actual magnitude of the trajectory of the problems that they are protesting.

Hah! As a scientific fiction joke, I will speculate that maybe the future readers of my comments might turn out to be robots, who then were able to understand what I was writing about. (Indeed, for several years now, the majority of the "readers" of my writings have actually been robots. Although, I doubt that they understood anything, so far.) We are collectively rushing towards the ruling classes driving automation to the point where it could replace them too! We may be looking at the emergence of a world government in which cyborgs play a more and more significant part.

It is no longer good enough to develop merely evolutionary ecologies for human beings within nature. We are going to have to develop evolutionary ecologies for industrial entities too. Therefore, while I agree that the ruling classes are losing control, and are terrified by that, and I agree that people should protest against the old-fashioned criminal insanities of those ruling classes, what SHOULD happen to generate superior solutions to the chronic political problems is more and more going to have to include, and attempt to integrate, industrial ecologies into the previous human and natural ecologies.

At present, the human ecologies emerged out of the natural ecologies to become social pyramid systems, where different human beings filled different ecological niches, so that the human ruling classes became the top carnivores over the vast majority of the people who were their prey. Clearly, as more people "wake up" to the objective realities regarding that kind of human farming, sophisticated slavery system, those ruling classes are justifiably freaking out about that, while more of the people being preyed upon should be protesting that social situation. However, so far, I have seen virtually nothing present in the public protests that I am aware of which provided better overall human ecology, much less ever came remotely close to proposing better overall industrial ecology. Instead, there is nothing much but extremely naive and silly notions about natural ecology, as kinds of mom and apple pie green notions, present in any relatively popular public protests that I am aware of.

What I am suggesting is that our window of perception regarding what our political problems are keeps on automatically jumping in size! Literally, our real problems have, within the life time of those alive today, jumped from millions, to billions, to trillions of times BIGGER, and are on the way towards become quadrillions of times ... IF civilization continues to survive ...

Sump ting wong

Wee too Hi

Ho Lee Fuk

Humorous ZH theme!

"However, one area of the human ventrolateral frontal cortex had no equivalent in the macaque — an area called the “lateral frontal pole prefrontal cortex” that has been identified with strategic planning and decision making as well as multitasking." (ref Neuron, 2014 (in press))

By the end of 2014 the remaining three Working Groups (WGs) of the IPCC Assessment Report 5 (AR5) should be published. The multitasking and strategic planning will rage on through 2015 in preparation for the Conference Of Parties(COP) in Paris near the end of the year. So Paris is 'the big one' and comes six years after the last big one, Copenhagen, which was big because it was on the heels of AR4. I can't think of any "popular public protest" more popular than UNFCCC these days. G20 type events were protested vigorously but they appear to have suffered the same fate as Occupy: neutered by democidal (h/t Rad) militarized forces. Because of the global nature of UNFCCC meetings, Paris has potential.

While I understand that most people don't have any idea what goes into COPs, and that many people's eyes glaze over at the mention of anything UN or climate, one thing that might be worth mentioning here is that regarding the ARs, they involve a large number of people and because of the way the process is structured, the reports are VERY conservative and increasingly unable to keep pace with rapid changes.

Perhaps the most glaring examples of this is in regard to Arctic sea ice. The early thinking was that we might have an Arctic Ocean free of ice in the summer somewhere about 2070 - 2080. In 2012 the was an enormous drop in the sea ice extent at the end of the melt season, which accelerated the trend of the last three decades. 2013 extent was much higher than 2012.

The point is we have two melt seasons, two summers, before Paris. That means two opportunities to have a bona fide event, an ice free or very near free, Arctic Ocean. Should this occur, Paris will a very interesting event! They will be talking about the continued survival of what we like to call today "civilization". This would be the Sump Tin Wong Ho Lee FUK most world leaders couldn't hide, not even the MSM.

I recall an episode of the original Star Trek series where they find a place where there is a war going on and people are reporting to death stations because the enemy is owed casualties. We would need to have such as 'war' (death controls) and call upon BILLIONS before 2050 to report to the station to die if the enemy we fight is ... "omnicidal" mass extinction. Life 'Under A Green Sky' lol Me, I'd prefer collectively flexing that lateral frontal pole prefrontal cortex thingy.

Maybe nobody will be talking about mass extinction in Paris. The process to produce AR6 will get under way and it will be 2020 before the next 'big one' happens. Decisions, decisions, decisions.

The PTB has never been so informed in all of history.

1.) total information awareness is here

2.) micro-payment control is here, what you eat, where you go

3.) you play you get money and job, you not play and your dirt

What gives you any idea that things are getting worse for the PTB?

If you have money life is good, and there are many rich country's for the elite to hide out, while the masses starve and riot.

The elite only have one problem, and that is a population problem.

In all my years of being close to elite ( super rich ), they only voice one concern, and that is they fear their children have to compete with the masses for wealth, food, and pleasure.

Dumbing down, and exterminating the masses, is the FINAL SOLUTION.

I doubt that the ruling classes could implement their "FINAL SOLUTION" of the mass murder of the majority of the human population without it spinning out of their control. Indeed, having to do that, while more and more people become aware of that strategy, is an aspect of the issues which this article by George Washington identified.

Like you, satochi911, I expect that most people will also be discounting my main point, which is that the realization of runaway science fiction nightmare scenarios will not be under human control, including not under the control of the human ruling classes anymore. The established fascist plutocracy juggernaut has already become a runaway that has jumped its rails, while the ouroboros of incorporated robberies it has created is careening out of the control of the professional money managers that are staring at their computer screens, trying to figure out which buttons to push. The combined money/murder systems are computerizing at breakneck speeds, that are leaving ALL human beings behind. There are no longer any ruling classes left within the human world that are able to sufficiently comprehend what is going on in order to regulate what happens by being able to respond appropriately. Sure they have the information theoretically available, but they would have to rely upon programming computers to actually use that information, which means it is really the computer programs which are controlling things, which no human beings are able to understand anymore!

I REPEAT: The ruling classes were merely selected by historical forces to have been the best at being dishonest, and backing that up with violence, within the human world. They have no other qualifications. Therefore, their psychological, social, and political habits have become action patterns of entangled knots of criminal insanities. The old-fashioned ruling classes have been operating from within the most protected environments, which have enabled them to go on believing in the most old-fashioned religions. Their old-fashioned notions of how to operate death controls are the things that ought to be most adequately replaced and sufficiently substituted for by an intellectual scientific revolution. The old-fashioned ruling classes are more and more dependent upon an emerging transnational group of scientific enterprises, which are like the aristocracy of the workers. Indeed, most of the military have now also become technicians and engineers, whose jobs depend upon scientific education.

One way or another, sooner or later, there IS a profound scientific revolution coming through politics. To some degree that will be the established systems growing until they collapse under their own excessive weight. There surely will be different systems of death control, when weapons of mass destruction start being used, when the established system drive themselves that madly self-destructive. All of the factors combined will conspire to force people to change, and for some, to perhaps think differently about death controls.

The established ruling classes do not have a monopoly on the methods and principles of organized crime. They are not gods! They are merely men, who are actually being left behind in the dust of history developing the powers of science and technology at an exponential rate. In that context, I repeat my science fiction "joke," that real revolutionaries in the future may well actually be cyborgs, and those may be the real backbone of some surviving and emerging world government. One should not continue to expect that those cyborgs will be as easy to continue to fool as the human Zombie Sheeple are now. It remains to be seen what happens when computers are able to develop models of their world, with models of themselves within their models of the world, that are equal to, and then greater than the human abilities to now do that!

All of the current kinds of human problems, with respect to psychology, sociology and politics, including especially militarism, and the monetary systems, will necessarily be recreated in cyberspace, by computers that become functionally self-aware (whatever their real degree of "consciousness" might or might not be.) The only significant human players in the future will necessarily become cyborgs. Indeed, for all practical purposes, the human ruling classes are now so dependent upon computers, and those who program them, that, to that extent, they have already become functional cyborgs, as have most of the rest of us, to our lesser degrees.

We have not seen anything yet regarding how extreme the social polarization and destruction of the natural world is going to get. As that happens, there will become even more intense micro-environments, while difference between them will become greater. There is no doubt that the real future will become more and more hyper-complicated, and therefore, more and more leave human beings behind, as being inherently unable to understand, and therefore, no longer able to regulate what happens, since they will not be able to respond with adequate means to control that.

Therefore, I agreed with the basic theme of this article by George Washington, that the ruling classes are terrified by the world spinning out of their control, and they should be. As that happens, there are going to be more and more millions and millions of people who will be waking up to the ideas that the ruling classes have been fleecing them to exhaustion, and setting them up to be slaughtered. HOWEVER, NONE OF THAT COMES REMOTELY CLOSE TO THE CONSEQUENCES OF SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY HAVING DEVELOPED AT AN EXPONENTIAL RATE, AND APPARENTLY ABLE TO CONTINUE TO DO THAT ...

Remember the creative aspects match the destructive aspects, as both change at exponentially accelerating rates, for the foreseeable future ... with no one human being possibly able to assimilate and integrate enough information to get remotely close to accurately predicting what will happen. Even the best computer modeling is going to be subjected to the bigger testing done by natural selection of their own survival, because their axiomatic assumptions might only be corrected by natural selection commensurating the incommensurables, as it has always done. Artificial selection by human beings always operates within the infinitely larger context of natural selection. The artificial selection by the human ruling classes is not exempt from those facts in the bigger picture. Pumping up the artificial selection functions in the combined money/murder systems with more and more advanced scientific technology must be radically transformed by the emergence of more artificial intelligence. The systems of artificial stupidity enforced by the ruling classes have their days numbered too ...

It's all here now.

satoshi9/11, I am not saying that genocide is not possible. I merely believe that it will go out of control of the ruling classes, because I think they are too criminally insane. (I would rather say that I am more like a chicken running around with its head cut off, than like an ostrich with its head stuck in the sand.)

I was aware of the stories about HIV being either dileberately, or with criminal negligence, introduced into the human world by human beings. Of course, that fits within the larger issues surrounding the profit from disease systems. Disease has always been the statistical giant causing death, orders of magnitude greater than wars and famines combined. The profit from disease and profit from junk food systems are torturing to death many orders of magnitude more people than both the legal and illegal uses of weapons do! There is no doubt that the hidden softer killing murders way more than the public harder killing! War, famine, and plague are crime, poverty and disease on a larger scale. The notion that politics is medicine writ large cuts both ways!

http://www.marijuanaparty.ca/article.php3?id_article=411

Question the disease diagnosis: bioweapons?

I also assert the view that clandestine weather modification is probably the greatest threat outside of actual warfare using significant weapons of mass destruction. As you suggested, satoshi9/11, these days, anyone who wants to can look at lots of research on various topics, which was again one of the main themes behind George Washington's original article, that information about topics that the ruling classes would not want those they rule to know is now only an Internet search engine use away from examination, by anyone prepared and able to spend the time to wade through the overwhelming amounts of chaff there. However, my conclusion, after doing lots and lots of that kind of thing, returns to my view that the ruling classes have become criminally insane in the ways that they operate their death controls.

That is largely possible due to two combined causes. The first is that most people still do not know about it, because they do not want to, and second, there is practically zero chance of enough people agreeing upon what better death control systems should be, or even that some death control systems must manifest in one way or another, again because most people are unable or unwilling to think through those problems.

What I always return to, when considering how the ruling classes are dominating systems which appear headed towards mass murdering the majority of the human population during the 21st Century, is HOW MIGHT better human evolutionary ecologies develop ??? That was the main point to my original comment: the real problems are way worse, and so, the only realistic solutions are also way worse than most people want to begin to imagine.

In that context, I find George Washington's articles excellently surf the waves of the alternative news just cresting into mainstream news. I feel he does a good job of avoiding writing things that would lose him that position. I salute him for doing that, despite that that is not my way.

I think about what you wrote, satochi9/11, but you seem uselessly angry to me. I find that your responses tend to be superficial stereotypes, pumped up by your own delusional self-righteousness. (I gather you left North America, fine that was your choice, but so what?)

Nobody can possibly do anything significant to change the runaway insanity that human civilization has become. There is NO sane "action" that can set one free from that overwhelming runaway social insanity. One may merely attempt to understand it better. After several decades of learning about the problems, I have concluded there are no good solutions. I repeat, the problems are way worse, and so, even the "solutions" must therefore be way worse.

The "action" that I call Canadians to is explained here:

http://www.marijuanaparty.ca/article.php3?id_article=215

I am working on the problem of the funding of politics.

My conclusion is that 99% of the people are Zombie Sheeple, and want to stay that way. Therefore, there is no reasonable hope for the future. other than wishing for some series of political miracles. Everything that is most important is going to automatically get worse, faster, at an exponentially accelerating rate. The main trend is turning natural resources into garbage and pollution, as fast as possible. There are no good grounds to believe that people will stop doing that until they are actually running out of resources. Given the exponential growth of human activities, that is going to happen sooner, rather than later. As it does, most people are going to collectively become way more criminally insane than they are now.

People protesting is very probably NOT going to lead to any better industrial ecologies, and without that, then it is only a matter of time until the current systems destroy themselves in ways beyond our ability to imagine how bad that is going to become. Since the world IS controlled by lies, backed by violence, while the liars deliberately ignore evidence and logic, and since actually attempting to be more violent that they are would only make things get worse, faster, there is really no coherent strategy left.

My main criticism of the idea that people should be protesting is that they do not see the bigger picture. The only possible better solutions would require greater use of information, and higher consciousness, so that we made and maintained better overall ecologies. However, the real world is controlled by systems which go down the path of least resist, by those who are merely being the best at being dishonest, and backing that up with violence, in each short-term increment. Therefore, the future evolution of any real ecologies will almost certainly be through a wild roller coaster ride, after the current exponential growth curve crashes into chaos and mass murders.

Since it is practically impossible to stop that from happening, I feel that the consolations of philosophy are all that are left. Therefore, I do try to maintain at attitude of high indifference to the human story, including my story. I tend to expect that things will continue to get worse, faster, and there is nothing I could actually do to change that, other than to speed it up. Generally, that is my view of most protestors. Nobody is able to actually make and maintain any better ecologies. The whole thing is going to go through its own path of least resistance, or least morality, to have sustained exponential growth, until that becomes impossible to actually continue, at which point everything will have overshot so, so far beyond what might have been sustainable, IF there were saner ecologies, that the collapse into chaos and mass murders will become more insane then than we can now imagine.

However, there is no point about getting angry about that. I repeat, that you, satoshi9/11, appear to be uselessly angry, except that your self-righteousness enables you to feel better about yourself while you do that. However, otherwise you could not be doing anything more than your own personal best to adapt, in ways that you believe best ...  SO WHAT?

I am doing that too. I am resigned to be radical, and to promote paradigm shifts which I do not believe will happen, or will surely become too little, too late to make any difference. For now, there are still enough natural resources for people to continue strip-mining. Within a few more decades, that will become increasingly impossible to continue. I like to day dream that people could adapt better, however, what I actually believe is that they will become even more criminally insane, and make things become even worse, faster.

The dynamic between the rulers and those they rule over, as described in this article by George Washington, will play through in ways which probably contribute to the collapse into chaos, rather than generate any better ecologies, because the basic concepts needed to make better ecologies will continue to be deliberately ignored and denied by most of both the rulers and those they rule over.

The whole issue is one of moral hazard and the disdain of TPTB accompanying its increasing abandonment with each step we take today.

Imagine, in 1974 a President was FORCED to resign for having transgressed moral hazard personally as proven by the Watergate scandal.

Today, the man in the same position openly admits to trangressing it day in day out at every international meeting using the NSA clout, at Copenhagen 2009 (documented)  and since then at every meeting, all in the name of "our inalienable rights to spy on everbody 'cos we are the strongest."

We've come a long way in that proud and self proclaimed world leader nation of USA, if a Potus can be forced to resign for spying on his competitor then, in 1974, to saying, in 2013, "so what" to the whole world and to every citizen of his own country, whose intimate, inviolate rights of Constitution are DEBASED DAILY by his administration.

"No big deal, yes we scan to 'protect' you,"  says he.

Democracy is now zapped into the dustbin openly by Potus and consorts.

And the whole world watches in incredulous dismay!

About time that TPTB should be terrified of people's ire,  fire and brimstone.

They are not in the least bit afraid.  I know several very wealthy folks and they honestly do believe that they have been anointed by the gods.  Although we began in the same place, they came into hundreds of millions thru the investment in one company they worked for that skyrocketed, years after they bought shares for pennies and then a few bucks. Since then they obviously have nothing to do with me.  One is a democrat to his soul.  The other a staunch republican. Both are generous in their philanthropy.

But they do know that they 'earned it', saw an opportunity, took a chance with every spare penny they could gather, and went from middle class to upper upper class in their 40s. One does nothing more now than spend hours per day in his gigantic wine cellar. Another flies all over the world pretending to look into venture deals.

It's all correct what you write GW.
However a complete account should mention that sometimes those activist groups are pursuing the wrong goals, either by cluelessness, being masterfully steered by TPTB, or worst of all outright intention to do harm.

The beautiful thing about nonviolent activism is that, while risking no harm, it has the potential to do good in ways small and large that ripple out from it in directions we cannot track or measure.

is therefore a complete and very special kind of whitewash.
Overall nonviolent activism that has abandoned scientific method for identifying and verifying their goals and results is about as much "risking no harm" as MyRA is riskfree.

If Ron Paul had been elected, he would have been assassinated pronto.  Anyone who tries to turn this ship around by working within the system/status quo will meet the same fate.  An all out revolution is required to cut the strings to the elite before any candidate can enter that office free from corruption and fear of being gunned down by a well coordinated hit ordered by the oligarchs.   If the people are ever able to set personal politics aside and unite to fight the real enemy in the City of London, a restoration of the republic might be possible afterwards. I am so sick of apathy, willful ignorance, complacency and red team/blue team bullshit I could hurl.

Maybe that would be true.  But what then?  Would the 50 million people who voted for Ron Paul have just thrown up their hands and walked away, or would a few million of them have stood up and screamed for vengence?  That event would, in my opinion, lead to the revolution that is so needed to turn DC around.

That is so much fiction.

It's happened before, hasn't it?  (JFK & MLK).  You, sir, are one of the useful idiots.

"Millions of Americans think that hope is for the foolish, and that the smart people are cynics."

It's true for all the Western societies:

"Generations of pragmatists grow with cliches like "this is the best society we can have", or, "humans are what they are and will never change". Thus, ethic, in many cases, ends to be a kind of luxury and replaced by a crude economic pragmatism and an extreme cynicism."

So, above and first of all, it is important to regain Vision. Then we cound see a real change coming.

Vision? Vision is in short supply in most ZH posts.

Mostly it's a let's wait and see crowd that indulges in schoolboy revenge fantasies. Politics? Voting? Oh my... that simply won't do. Might have to get out from behind the keyboard and face not only a gathering police state, but people of good conscience whom disagree on principle and fact. Might have to, gasp, compromise: Oh the agony of ideological impurity!

Hate to tell you guys, but unless you organize and work for it, no matter what happens, crash or long slow slide, you won't accomplish much of anything. TPTB, whom are organized and working their plans, will prevail absent a coherent and counter-vailing political force.

But what do I know -- all alone, my opinion does not matter. Nor does yours for that matter.
