Do you know the military expression 'covering your six'? it's referring to those who are protecting the area that you cannot see as you advance as one who is 'taking the point' in an offensive operation. The 'six o'clock position' is described as what is behind you where you cannot see (as you always face the 12 o'clock position in a full offensive). The 'point', of course, refers to the clock position of 12.
