UK and US Collected Millions of Webcam Images (Many Nude) ... To Smear or Blackmail the Targets?

George Washington's picture

Newly-released Snowden documents show that the British and American spy agencies gathered and stored many millions of images from Yahoo web cam streams … and that a large percentage are naked or pornographic images.

Given that the spy agencies use porn to discredit activists – and apparently to blackmail critics -  it is worth asking whether that was the larger purpose for this spy program.

Indeed, Glenn Greenwald – who has seen all of the Snowden documents – tweets:

Regarding GCHQ/NSA collection of sex chat photos, remember they plot to use online sex activity to harm reputations ....

The Associated Press notes:

The stockpiling of sexually explicit images of ordinary people had uncomfortable echoes of George Orwell's "Nineteen Eighty-Four," where the authorities — operating under the aegis of "Big Brother" — fit homes with cameras to monitor the intimate details of people's home lives.

***

The collection of nude photographs also raise questions about potential for blackmail. America's National Security Agency has already acknowledged that half a dozen analysts have been caught trawling databases for inappropriate material on partners or love interests. Other leaked documents have revealed how U.S. and British intelligence discussed leaking embarrassing material online to blacken the reputations of their targets.

And Bill Binney - the high-level NSA executive who created the agency’s mass surveillance program for digital information, a 32-year NSA veteran widely regarded as a “legend” within the agency, the senior technical director within the agency and managed thousands of NSA employees, an expert on spying by the Soviets, interviewed by virtually all of the mainstream media, including CBS, ABC, CNN, New York Times, USA Today, Fox News, PBS and many others - told Washington's Blog:

This is just one of the ways to make controlling people possible.  Standard KGB/Stasi tactics.

In addition, top security experts have pointed out that spy agencies' mass surveillance leaves such information vulnerable to hackers and other malicious actors.

So even if those nude pictures aren't used for smear campaigns or blackmail (or drooled over) by GCHQ or NSA personnel, they might be by others.

That shows how government operates, of course ...., but, incidentally, that probably tells something about how a society operates generally.

If we all just had x-tube channels, this would be so much easier...

Back on the dark ages, it was so much more difficult to make home made porn - those damn betacams weighed something like 10 lbs and had such crappy lenses that you needed klieg lights, and of course friends who didn't mind being put in the otherwise awkward position of operating a camera while others went at it (unless you were really into the voyeur porn genre, like the NSA, where could get away with just a tripod).

On the other hand, this is one of the few instances I can imagine where America's fundamentalist and puritanical prudery could certainly and effectively serve the greater good.

You rang??? I ought to spread this news to the church.

If you are a Christian you need to let your ministers know that this is happening. T

They are violating the wedding chamber and that is SACROSANCT.

This is an outrage.

This is really bad. Really bad.

I think it's really bad for Christians and non-Christians alike, my devoutly religious friends over in lands since overrun by Al CIAda should be just as offended, and they already have an ax to grind with the Drones-R-US subsidiary of the MIC. My wife, who is Evangelical to the point I won't let her venture off into Appalachia alone (for fear she discovers a snake handling congregation) couldn't care less though. So, to me at least- the US appears the most practical ground for interfaith Jihad.

Thanks a lot.

Spy agencies definitely are malicious actors, .... no embarrassing surprise here. The embarrassing fact, as your question seems to point it out and as I tried to point it out, is that they may have an awful lot of accomplices.

Provides a better understanding of what happened to a potential leader of the IMf who advocated a move away from USD. See http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dominique_Strauss-Kahn_sexual_assault_case for overview.

At the time there was an investigative news story describing how some of the hotel security personnal appeared to have foreknowledge of the events and were seen on internal video cameras congratulating themselves after the event.

One very interesting scenario would be, if the NSA did try to blackmail such a figure, if the individual in question said "ok, go ahead". How much damage would such a revelation of blackmail do to the NSA? If that individual had nothing to lose so to speak, if they were at the end of their career or if they came to their senses about the implications of such blackmail....

I vaguely recall the KGB trying to blackmail the PM, of Malaysia? with extensive photos of him with a few young women, naturally supplied by the KGB.

The plan went awry when he requested additional prints to share with his friends.

That would be former Indoesian President Ahmed Sukarno, and the photos were in fact a full-action film involving several KGB agents dressed (or undressed) as Aeroflot stewardesses.

Sukamo thanked the Soviets for their generous gift.

It doesn't matter if you personally don't care about your reputation and are at the end of your career, they can still blackmail you andget away with it. The agency wouldn't leave any incriminating evidence that they tried to blackmail someone. So all you would have is a guy coming out publicly (or whatever embarresment it is) and claiming a conspiracy theory.

They also have methods to increase the chances that you will cooperate. They don't have to target you directly as you might not care if people know you do kinky things, but most people would knuckle under if the threat was made to tarnish their kids names or even prosecute them. How many times for example have you seen a facefart image of some college age kid groping an under-age girl? That kids whole family will knuckle under if threatened, so if his grandfather is a politician, judge etc then that kids transgressions are a prime target.

The only people interested in asking that question are either Law Enforcement or people whom are looking to purchase Child Porn.

And I do not believe that you are Law Enforcement...or...are you?

Identify your self if you are. If you don't then I can only assume the other alternative and I will report you to Law Enforcement for solicitation.
