What must be understood is that this is not a zero sum game. You can get further with a kind word and a gun than you can with just a kind word. a few years ago there was a scandal at the racetrack(s). the odds were changing after the gates opened and the horses started running, and the odds almost always went lower on the eventual winner. quite a bit in some cases. a few people filed a lawsuit which was tossed out of course, and then just as abruptly these things stopped...
the second part in this story is what should really get your attention. the official reason given was that the tracks were slow transmitting the odds back from the various satellite outlets. there was a move to close offtrack betting a minute early in offtrack venues. a lot of ideas were floated, but none of it was necessary though, because the problem just stopped.
so who was doing it? well about that time some smart kids from Drexel U, figured out a way to hack into the coomputer betting system, during the breeders cup pick six and write their own winning ticket, but they were caught (only by chance). confidence in the system was at a real low, like it is now on wall street. (one of the kids worked for the software firm i believe, so it was an inside job)
and then this late posting scam, so who was doing it? it seems obvious to me the racetrack itself was doing it, in order to make more money. my spec is that HFT is allowed to go on because it is profitable to USG, we have government by means of racketeering, there is no reason to believe they wouldn't do it. why should they stop. it won't take the SEC, and it will quietly blow over, when they stop profiting from it. of course the USG is not nearly as ethical as most racetracks. you will get a fair shake at the track before you can ever catch a break on wall street. (and thats with 20% off the top)

"The Day the Robots Lost" in a Bloomberg article shows the real problem. The HFT guys who are all at least doing something and developing something actually point out the real fraud by governement insider trading that is going on. If you appreciate math and believe you need to despise proportionatley to crime then look at the article. Your prerequisite is to understand the differnece between millions, billions and trillions of dollars.

My first inkling of insider high frequency trades came via an interview between Jack Blood and Richard Andrew Grove in 2008.
I was heavily involved in 9/11 research at the time (I still am, by the way), and this interview was quite interesting.
I'm surprised that it took so long for this issue to be brought up in the Mainstream.

Remember, he was one of the software engineers who helped pioneer this HFT stuff (compartmentalized, he didn't realize it...)

When the going gets rough, all manner of peripherals will get tossed overboard in order to save the mother ship. This is another attempt at misdirection. Afterall manipulating things like interest rates, PMs and currencies is the true guts of the vessel.

Do NOT fall for the bullshit. GS is NOT getting out of the HFT/trade order skimming game.
IEX is very likely at best a well meaning venture that is being unwillingly subverted into the role of front for the preservation of the HFT/skimming scam. GS is merely using IEX in a sanctimonious propaganda exorcise to siphon muppet market-share from the competing hedgies/bankster prop desks.
Here is a big picture for You: GS still has the 'Dark Pool' internal trading book -a proprietary 100% internal trading floor run by and for the GS prop desk. -This is where a buy order is matched with a sell order internally when the shares are either being traded by two GS Customers or by one GS Customer and GS itself.
ALL GS has to do is skim the trade either inside the GS Dark Pool or go buy/sell shares at an external exchange such as NYSE or IEX and bring the trade back into the GS Dark Pool for execution.
IEX is a curtain behind which Dark Pools can continue to practice HFT/skimming practices; all that will change is that a step or two will be added into the prop desk order to consumate the trade execution.

Yes, the tactical advantage, it always has its place.
However, we should also appreciate the strategic and those who make the conscious decision (of their own free will) to fight on their own terms, to draw the attention of the enemy to themselves, so that others may live and fight another day.

All his HFT stuff is taking away from the massive success of Obamacare! 7 million signups (out of 45 million). What an awesone success, and I hear that some of those 7 million actually paid for the care instead of just putting it in their shopping cart.
The 7 million is misleading. They should be reporting the net number.....7 million sign ups less 'X' who lost insurance because their company cancelled it due to the new law.
I have a sense we be reporting a negative number on the net basis.

Saying something is a human right is just a fancy way of saying you want someone else to pay for it.
You're paying a lot more for it anyway. The free lunch at the emergency room was one of the driving reasons behind healthcare reform. The fact that Obummer didn't get it right (or anything else, sad to say) is not a statement about universal healthcare. Amazing how fast people forget why the conversation began in the first place. Wise up.

IMHO healthcare is not a right. Plebes assert that it is a right for 1 of 2 reasons.
They either want their healthcare paid for by others, or they want the votes of those who want their healthcare paid for by others.
Your health is your responsibility. When misfortune befalls you, be prepared to pay for the service of restoring health. If you wish to pool your risks for the cost of care, buy insurance. That's your right. You have no right to service provided by others without your compensating them for time, training, expertise and responsibility.
