Its also time we talk about the culpability of the "captured press"...the handmaidens of the bureaucracies that comprise the state and their service to it in promoting (propagandizing for) its desires.
The utter lack of criticism or curiosity in the majority of the press is quite telling, so its hard for someone like me to get worked up about it until this element of "the press" is held to task for its collusion with the state.
How is it that David Gregory can flash a 30rd magazine (illegal in DC) on national TV and not charged with a crime, while Mark Witaschek can not only be charged with inoperable slugs (lead muzzle loading shot), but convicted? By the same prosecuter who refused to charge David Gregory, by the way.
The answer is quite simple, David Gregory is a protected class of citizen while Mark Witaschek is not. The two tier rule of law system, one for them, then one for us.
The David Brooks, Martha Radditz's, Andrea Mitchells and so forth will get no sympathy from me when the shit breaks loose for abusing their positions & trust and what they have done to MY First Amendment for their own benefit.
They should already suspect this in their self aggrandized, egotistical heart of hearts, if not, now they do.

This is a sore spot for me also. Since I don't have a TV or cable, I'm not aware how bad it's gotten except through outlets like ZH. Your examples above of this protected class, like Gregory, necessarily leave out hundreds more that act as policy tools for both wings of the same diseased bird. A good way to see this divide and conquer algo at work is to look at the home page for Real Clear Politics where articles from both "sides" are presented together. After reading these opinions, you've gained less insight but more meaningless talking points. The tendency is to not read any of it at all.
While I agree they deserve no sympathy at all, they do deserve a proper trial. Then they should be properly hanged.
I've observed it the better part of my adult life (the destruction of lives or property) to a purpose, the states purpose via "the press".
I'm fully aware that the press was (ab)used long before you and I, to impugn the character of political foes but the recent trend of using it to attack the individual citizen is, well, Stasi-like.
Zimmerman was just another example (whether anyone believes the verdict right or wrong is not the issue here) NBC edited the 911 tape of him talking to police to make it seem like he voluntarily said Trayvon was black (because the state wanted him portrayed as a rascist) when in actuality the cops themselves asked Zimmerman "what color" he was.
That was edited out, purposefully.
The latest example is Bundy out in Nevada. Bundy is up against some very formidable forces, namely the state & its cronies and has gained popularity by his defiant stance and the issues surrounding it. So, like clockwork, here it comes...a New York Times reporter's interpretation of him being a rascist. When the full youtube video comes out days later, it reveals he is not.
But the damage has been done. Almost at the same time Reid takes to the floor of the United States Senate to condemn a man based on what can only be described as a lie...as Bundy's words were taken out of context. No front page retraction for the heavilly edited reporters angle. No suspension of the reporter for doing it.
Silence.
Hardly no one knows the real story now, most walk away with the lie of Bundy implanted in their head.
For these and all other abuses of the press, there is a list being kept and the trial will be just as short as the one they gave to all others.

As a general rule, unless one has been properly counseled, one should never ever talk to the press. What is proper preparation? A carefully written statement followed by a Q&A that adds nothing.

television is an advertising medium, the press is the print medium, and the print ad can be scrutinized, (reread over again) and becomes an instant cliche. when you say free the press, you're saying the press should be free to advertise without remorse, to repeat (obamas' favorite) cliches, (yes we can, etc)
the press shouldn't be free it should be beholding to another standard. the press should be less free, the press should answer to the people, do the peoples work, and fill their needs. if you say to the head of network XYZ you're free to run any news programming you want, he'll do more of what he does now, sell ad space to drug makers, and run informerical style news, to the benefit of their (political and corporate) contributors, and not their viewers.
No! You are responsible for what you let into your own head. "The press" will be what it is; it is bought and paid for like much of society. This is not a new development. It has forever been so.

Any time there's a suicide of a controversial figure, it makes me wonder what really happened. Part of me doesn't believe he took his own life, but I concede willingly that too much dismal shit causes really unnecessary shit to happen.
I was thinking before I found your reply- how many humans are engaged daily in completely useless, unproductive, futile and sometimes detrimental shit everyday? They don't know that, of course. All they know is that an authority figure somewhere has given them a task, and is willing to pay them to do it. They mostly don't wonder why they're doing what they're doing- only that they get paid to do it. These people almost never commit suicide. Blissfully free of the ravages of intelligence, I reckon.
