Male-Female Wage Disparity Begins at Home

Just like everything else, it’s the chicken and the egg conundrum. Which came first? Was it the professional society set-up that led to women being paid less than men for the same job and influencing the way parents treat their children at home, or was it the fact that girls get paid less than boys around the house for doing chores that meant that the same scheme of things was reproduced in society in the workplace. We’ll probably never know.

But, what we do know is that the gender gap starts way before the people step into the executive shoes and don the accoutrements of the professional world, according to the research carried out on elementary school children by ThinkProgress.

The statistics show that we are all in the act of perpetuating a gender gap for pay and it starts with allowances given by parents to their children.

67% of boys aged between 8 and 18 years of age in the USA get given an allowance by their parents.
• That figure is much lower for girls (only 59%) since they are expected to work for nothing.
• Boys might well participate much less in household chores according to the research, but when they do do something in the house, they get paid much more than the girls.
52% of boys get some form of financial gain for doing something around the house, while only 45% of girls get given money in return.
• Girls end up doing more household chores than boys (and get paid nothing or less).
• Averages show that boys spend 2.1 hours per week on household chores, bringing in $48.
• Girls do 2.7 hours of work in the house and get $45 on average.
• Does this actually explain why 75% of boys use a financial tool to manage their budgets on a smartphone device (while only 71% of girls do so)?
• Boys (43%) also believe that they will be earning more than $35,000 a year when they graduate from college in their first job.
• That figure is much lower for girls standing at 35% who believe that they will earn over $35,000.

Girls are less likely to get given money, making sure that it’s the boys that learn how to run the finances. The boys also learn that we live in a world where everything has a price and that we shouldn’t work for nothing. We would find it hard to believe that any parent would make that sort of distinction between girls and boys, but it’s more likely to be the unconscious bias that we see every day in society. Even women are at fault by reproducing the way things run.

Let’s stop believing that the boys know how to handle money. The banks have proved that one wrong already on many an occasion. Lehman Brothers should never have been run by the men! Let’s stop believing that women are innocent and need protection from the fire and brimstone world of the financial markets.

Strange really that women get paid less and have to work harder and yet growing numbers of people are relying on the salary of women in the household as the sole earner. The Pew Research Center reported last year that 40% of mothers were the sole or primary source of income in households across the country, with the figure tripling since 196066% of those women were single mothers and 37% were married and earning a higher wage than their spouses. Single mothers have just 4% of the wealth of single fathers (just $100 in comparison with $25,300).

Although, maybe one day we might just get to the bottom of the story as to who is at fault for women being paid less than men for the same work. Some believe that we got tot the bottom of the chicken and the egg story since the egg shell relies on the protein only to be found in the chicken’s body (OC-17), thus proving that if the egg shell cannot come into being with that protein and that protein is only to be found in the chicken, then the chicken came first. So what is it in the world that is responsible for women being paid less than men? Is it the family that perpetuates the salary gap that will be reproduced later in life or is it the professional set-up for women that leads parents to pay their children differently?

Whatever it is, women are getting a rough deal in the USA both at home and at work.

Articles like this always touch a nerve with me.  If a woman is doing the exact same job as a man, then equal pay makes sense.  I work in a hospital, and have mostly female coworkers.  When a situation arises that requires more physical strength, guess who they come and get.  I also get top billing when a patient is confused/combative, etc.  Strange, they haven't added a penny to my check to deal with the additional stress (physical and otherwise) of the extra duties.  What I commonly encounter is an attitude that says "I'm a strong, independent woman", unless they feel threatened, or in some way in over their heads.  At that point, the "princess" mentality emerges.  The expectation is that the men around them are to step up, and fulfill their unspoken "white knight" obligations.  If anyone dares to question the obvious contradiction, you can expect to be labeled a "misogynist", or the like.  If you aren't a witness to this sort of bullshit on a regular basis, count yourself lucky.

Who is talking about the perks many women enjoy here in the U.S.?  In dating, marriage, and divorce situations, women frequently have the advantage.  Between men and women, who historically pays the higher price financially?

From my perspective, "divot farm" has gone full cultural retard on this one.

Dafaq? Really?? My wife makes mor than me and I treat her like a Goddess!

What's next? Women are not the only ones getting a "rough deal".

So, will the state punish me if I don't pay my kid an allowance that's above $7.25/hour?

If I have a girl, should I be forced to pay her moar?

I never got an allowance for doing chores. They're fucking chores and I was told to do them regardless.

This was out of respect for my parents something which seems to be missing from the formula in today's world.

The wage disparity is horse shit and always was. When my aunt got her first public school job, there was a fixed pay schedule. It was strictly based on degrees attained and years of experience. The schedule said how many "men" and "girls" were employed at each level, but their pay was the same.

That was 1956. Womyn's Lib arose because suburban white women were pampered and bored, not because they were oppressed.

Hey, I would take $16.67 an hour/no taxes for housework.  My kid gets $2 a week plus a little for good school peformance.

I remember my sister getting bow coo clothes and stuff that amounted to far more than my allowance per week for helping my dad deliver moonshine to the neighbors.  She didn't need an allowance, which would have made matters much worse for me vis a vis this rottent statistic.

Go away, and come back with some facts, not conjured numbers that smell like 5 day old dead catfish.

I raised three boys. They were indispensible to me working around the house. We did all the heavy lifting in a household, work my wife -- or had I had girls - could not do. Period, full stop. Sorry, boys get more because they can do the jobs around the house girls cannot do, they are an asset for heavy lifting. Anyone can wash a dish, try taking down trees and cutting brush, tuning up tractors and equipment, removing 2 feet of snow from the driveway, etc.

Had it not been for the boys, I would have had to pay for assistance, it was a fair trade, they received an education, some spending money, food, room and board, etc., I got the help I needed.

Cherry picked statistics are pure garbage.  I don't see in the "statistics" above that Mothers spend about three times more for their daughter's clothing than for the boys.  That Mothers spend more on lessons and special events than for their sons.

When you go to the store, which one should cost more?   Beef or chicken, a pound of butter or a box of cerial, apples or oranges?

The market is infallable, it determines the cost, and the value, of everything.

If women had any business sense, they would capitalize on their unique ability to procreate and continue the species by negotiating contracts extremely favorable to themselves.  Women hold the future of humankind in their wombs, as it were, but fail to capitalize on that fact so, how can they possibly succeed in the business world or expect to be treated as men's equals in any market place?

Q: Why are Mark Zuckerberg, Eduardo Saverin, Andrew McCollum, Dustin Moskovitz, Chris Hughes, Cameron Winklevoss, Tyler Winklevoss, and Divya Narendra men? There were MORE Harvard females enrolled in 2003. Why did a female Harvard student not create FaceBook but instead wait for it to be created, use it constantly as an addiction, and then get hired to run the company built by a man (HP, eBay) after the hard work had been done by men?

A: Because they don't want to do it. They want the benefits, but won't put in the work.

In the traditional home, the parents are a team. There are traditional roles, but ultimately it makes no difference who earns or does what as long as the family is healthy prospering and safe.

Ultimately money is only a tool of slavery and to quibble about its distribution and importance only gives power to those who are enslaving us.

If you do not need or want money, then and only then can you be free. For most people this release comes with death ... but it can come earlier as well for those who are mentally prepared.

In the industrial world, we spruik the joys of specialization - it makes us more efficient.  So why do we expect the family unit to remain jack-of-all-trades?  Why have both spouses working plus doing housework?  Wouldn't it be more efficient to have one working while the other keeps the house?

Dear Pivotfarm :  Get Fucked.

(I guess that was the knee-jerk reaction you were looking for.  You're welcome.)

Anti-discrimination laws have kept pay rates for men and women equal for a few decades now.  No excuse for bullshit.

Everyone whinges that not enough women are CEOs but when you look at the rest of the workforce, 98% of the workers at the bottom of the pay scale are men, so why wouldn't 98% of the CEOs also be men?

What a woman earns is irrelevant when she makes up for it with what she can sponge from her husband / boyfriend.  ( Yes, yes, there are also male sponges out there, I'm well aware of that.  Perhaps you can do a study about it.)

Name one US company that uses a different pay scale for women.

The issue is purely one of putting in the time and effort.  Whether that is because of having babies and raising kids alone, or laziness, is not even the point.  What we don't want to do is subsidize lack of time and effort.  We will end up destroying any reason to work harder to get ahead.  If women don't like that, they need to keep their legs closed and their head in the game.  Everyone is already being forced to pay for their health care.

Sorry, guys. Your women might allow you that fantasy, but I don't have to. In middle age men start to lose the ability to perform, but they never lose interest. Some of that loss of ability might be due to health issues, such as diabetes and vascular problems and some of the medication used to treat certain health issues can cause erectile dysfunction as well (some blood pressure medication and certain antidepressants are notorious for that). Also, as one ages, nothing works as it did when one was young so unless you die young and leave a beautiful corpse you are going to lose things along the route to old age and death, and you're going to grieve over each and every loss. Women are not like men. They don't lose the ability to perform (after all, a vagina doesn't have to do anything), but they lose interest, sometimes for the same reasons as above, and sometimes because their libido is linked to hormones, which become increasingly scarce as production starts to taper ahead of menopause. That part of life becomes less important as women get older, so if you think someone loves your penis pump or your little blue pill they are probably just indulging you.
